You know, I really respect athletes like Michael Phelps and Yang Wei (hope I spelled that right), but I was getting slightly irritated last night when I was watching. In swimming, EVERYTHING was centered around Phelps. I want him to break the record as much as the next guy, but it was almost like the commentators were being forced to keep talking in a Phelps centered circle. When it switched to gymnastics, it was the exact same thing except this time it was Wei.

There is no doubt that these guys are superb athletes, but the coverage and commentary that almost exclusively covered and discussed them ALONE was getting trying. I mean, there are how many OTHER athletes competing in these games? Plenty of other men and women that are trying JUST as hard to do their best.

I think it's over a week in the olympics, and the Canadians haven't won a damn thing yet. We're still behind all of the 3rd world countries. A lot of them have won at least 1 medal...(or will when track starts). I really do wish we won a gold in row boating, I really do. :(
 
I'm friggin angry...argentina beated croacia in basket but i dont have THAt much faith in the team...and france...i really dont know how france is going

well this is America man, you know they are going to hype up their star athlete. If the commentators were told to mention Phelps 13 times throughout a match, you better believe they would reach that number or higher. It's all politics.

Anyway i just think the entire concept of the olympics is great. It's like the one true salvation for mankind, not only are these top tier athletes of the world, comming from every nation to get together and compete, but the audience as well. Billions tune in to watch a few. A few entirely professional, finely honed athletes represent their country. This is a tradition that mankind has kept for hundreds of years, and it still thrives to this day. Tell me thats not cool.
 
Tyson Gay came 5th in the semi heats, hence he's not in the final. Even if he did qualify looking at his performance, he wouldn't medal. Shame about his injury, now it's just between Powell and Bolt

Can't look past Bolt imo, he's on fire, he did 9.85 in his heat and still did his jog 40 metres, look around on the line shit. Maybe Powell will perform better now he's not the favourite, but I'm still backing Bolt to equal or lower the WR and take gold.
 
yeah powell doesnt seem even close to bolt.

Also is bolt like his real name? If so, that is quite awesome.

Also, its not really surprising that they're doing the main events now.

They're doing it at 10:30pm in China for Americans/Britons' benefit. They would never do it that late.

Tyson Gay coming 5th was surprising. He came back at the end, he was 7th till right at the end. I would've thought there'd be some mutual agreement between the two Americans. Congratulations to the other guy for making it through.

Also, is anybody watching the cycling?

Good effort, Usain Bolt. To run under 9.7 and still ham it up in the last 10m is incredible.

I reckon he could have easily gone 9.6 if he didn't!

Fuck me, 9.69 seconds and he was celebrating a good 10 metres before the line, and NO WIND, this guy could break 9.6 seconds with a tailwind + no celebration.

Also, Asafa Powell in choking on big stage shocker. Walter Dix - great name.

Edit: for the sake of athletics, I really hope he is clean.
 
9.69 is fucking ridiculous, I can't even really break 11 seconds when everything goes for me.
 
Canada apparently won a gold and a bronze in wrestling.

I used to wrestle with and be trained by the husband of the gold medal winner, her coach actually was the very same guy that coached me for 5 years. Totally awesome.
 
Haha, you know what's sad? Most of the opening ceremony was either fake/digitized. The fireworks weren't real. They used fans to make the flags blow, etc.

As far as I know, the fireworks were done BEFORE the cerimony and were recorded, but they were used again in that night; the Chinese media preferred to show the pre-recorded fireworks because the opening night was too cloudy/polluted/whatevertheysaid.

But I agree that that cute singer and the kids representing the Chinese ethnics were pretty lame.

Lol Brazil. They're doing pretty much the same here, but as we aren't exactly good in olympics (our record is 5 golds in Athenas, I think), they at least mention the other athletes. But I can't see the table tennis matches because it doesn't matter for the majority of the Brazilian people and thus, the media doesn't show a thing -__-

Those damn volleyball/football teams better get their gold medals, or else.

Canada won a Silver in rowing too. :D

Heh, that's awesome to be trained by an olympic coach. You must be pretty damn good at wrestling. :P

Haha, Canada went from not even being on the ranking, to jumping to rank 25 today. I hope that these aren't the only medals Canada wins though...

Heh, my other country, Trinidad won a medal today in one of the running events. Haha, you almost never see those guys do good, but it's awesome when they miraculously do.

Also, the guy who won the 100m finals just blew me away with how he won.
Not only did he stumble and apear to almost roll an ankle on the start, he stopped sprinting the last ~15m and STILL broke the World Record.

I was a national champion and beat one of the wrestlers that is there right now. That was a solid 5-6 years ago though, I haven't wrestled since. They begged me for like 4 years after I quit to come back, so I did for just one match. I dispatched the hungarian national champion with ease and just walked out of the room. :D


I find it kind of sad this olympics is so fucked up by China. I Just heard that hundreds of thousands of people starved and died from it because china diverted food funds. Oil drilling up here in Alberta is starting to shut down a fair bit thanks to them stopping industry for 6 months beforehand to limit the smog. I can only imagine what a shithole that place is when they don't shut down industry. This olympics is brutal.
