glad to see another yorkshire champo supporter in here, at least you don't support sheff wed.
town are doing surprisingly well this season, surely youve got to expect them to drop off a bit somewhere along the line?
Local team are Town, what can I say :) wouldn't touch Sheff Wednesday if you paid me :U
I think under Mark Robins it comes down to learning from what happened last season and making sure it doesn't happen again. After about 7 games last season we were 2nd having just beaten Blackpool on their own patch - yet by the end of the season (and following a 12 match winless run) we were only just surviving on the final day (thank you Peterborough!). Even this season, after we beat Bournemouth 5-1, we only had 2 wins in 11 league games (against Charlton and Leeds) - with the last of those games being a 3-1 home loss to Birmingham, where we were absolutely abysmal.
However, the difference is the level of performance our players put in, even if we haven't gotten the results desired. Of the few years I've been watching Town (home, the odd game away), the way we've been playing under Robins is so much better than Grayson had gotten out of us with not too many differences in the squads. Admittedly, Robins himself has said it's a Work In Progress, but it feels like these last three games have seen things click, breeding confidence in the squad. Of late, we look confident to play the ball around the park, and we're getting good performances out of the midfield talent we have available (on their day, Oliver Norwood and Adam Clayton are unplayable in the Championship) to provide service to our front line.
Jonathan Hogg was a brilliant bargain (seems to be able to run around for 90 minutes straight to get challenges in) and Alex Smithies, our homegrown young keeper, has put in some sterling performances none of us Town fans thought he was capable of - he made an outstanding point-blank save to deny Danny Ings on Saturday and single-handedly kept us in the game against Bolton on Tuesday (5 saves, including an exceptional save to deny Matt Mills). The irony of that latter remark is that we scored with our only shot on target xD (horrible stat, however - we had 15 shots in the match...)
I feel like we've shirked the naivety that led to us being hammered a good few times last season (Forest 6-1, Leicester 6-1, Peterborough 3-1, Millwall 4-0 etc.), and the 3-5-2 formation means we have that extra man in midfield to keep the opposition guessing. Naturally, there may be a dip in form of sorts (even the best teams mess up at times - Barcelona's 2 defeats on the spin, for instance) - but so long as our manager keeps the squad with their feet on the ground and taking each game as it comes, even if the opposition get a lucky deflection that leads to a draw or defeat, I'm confident that the team will have put in a performance that Town fans can be proud of.
I'm guessing you're a Sheffield United supporter, shade?
