Other 5 Years of National Dex

Not gonna go super deep here, but I've been with this community through some high highs and low lows and hrough it all there's so many people here who are consistently fantastic and great to hang out with. I'm proud to be a part of this community, hopefully some of us will be around to celebrate a decade of Natdex. Here's to five more years!

I'd love to thank the awesome people in the nd moderation team for helping me through that and find myself (sol ur the goat <3)

Wait huh what did I do, I just said trans rights

Facts

Anyway ND kinda fell off after—I’m just kidding this is a lovely tier and it’s been that way since day 1, even with all the bans and retirements (and unretirements, you dont leave mons mons has to leave you). I can’t really overstate how much this community has impacted me, I can only say it hasn’t made me better at mons but it has given me more appreciation for so much stuff, like music, manga, games, psychology, and education, not stuff that you would normally expect from any online community let alone mons. Anyway shoutout to my fellow moderation team both on Smogon and PS!, with special shoutouts to astralydia adem R8 Steorra and about. Love you guys and though I can’t be sure I’ll be here for another 5 years, I’m sure they will be great. (Also go look at kolohe.zip shameless plug for my friend)

As someone whos been here since day one of natdex I have to say this is the best community on smogon, met some of the most amazing people and great friends here and I've lived long enough to see the room regs rise up and take over the tier. Despite being a top villain for most of the time Ive been around natdex Ive come around recently to vibe with the community a lot more even council with their wacky quickbans and corrupt big stall connections (love yall).

This tier has the most variety of any on the site and thats what makes it so great, all the possible combinations leave so much room to innovate and create new broken HO mons to terrorize ladder and tour matches with, strike fear into my enemies as they never know what ridiculous sets I Might be running.

As for shoutouts there are way way too many to even list here, you all know who you are and the insane vibes weve had over the last few years whether youve been here from the very start or only recently started playing were a tight knit community which we kind of have to be due to constantly getting looked down on by the wider smogon community and I appreciate all of you.

I've made it my lifes mission that I will never quit natdex until I succeed in getting Kings Rock unbanned and see the unfair discrimination against Cloyster ended once and for all.

Happy birthday natdex.

Damn I'm getting old. Nice to see the community still going even if I've stopped playing after gen 8 since the meta wasn't rewarding to play because back then there was no ribbon. Hopefully GF will bring back the national dex one day so the OU community isn't split in two. Happing Natdexing everyone and make sure you don't blame minorities for suspects not going your way again!

I loved the SSND days, though I was not yet good enough to keep up with the tour scene. It was still cool seeing all of the metagame innovations over time, and how the meta continues to evolve as it grows older, even if the playerbase and tournament volume is way lower these days. I think it's still my favorite meta, but it's difficult for me to make the time to find some tech to grind out these days especially now that SVND is booming after the ban. With it being a lower power floor and ceiling than SV, it's also easier for me to build my own teams with a feature mon or specific strat in mind, personally.

SVND on release was chaotic but fun. Once things cooled off (post-Walking Wake), Tera meta was an annoyingly long period of time over which I was vehement in expressing my distaste for the mechanic, even quitting for 9 months til DLC2 and subsequent bans/test. Oh, and the 2nd test was incredibly tragic, but we got people to come around and stop meme voting after suffering for another year or so after that. And thank god we did. The meta was only just starting to stabilize around the Gambit/Zama bans but still had a long way to go.

Pending any further action (bans unbans etc.) in the tier as it stands in Post Tera meta, I got exactly what I bargained for. This tier is just a powercrept SSND now rather than some ungodly amalgam of mechanics and brokens (ha ha Diancie HO v.50403972 ha ha terrain HO ha ha...). Melmetal being back has been an awesome thing in my book as far as centralizing the meta (in a good way, where the tier is stable). Kingambit, Pult, Dengo, and Zama being back to contend directly with each other is also welcome, while still feeling like none of the unbans are necessary for a successful team. Old threats like Yard and IVal are as relevant as ever. Great Tusk is still a menace. So on and so on.

I did enjoy the Tera meta of NDWC III (2023) when literally everyone ran KokoMoth HO structures, and NDFL II was pretty fun at the end of the day (especially without Gouging), but I can't wait to see the new tour metas and landscape going forward. I hope I can put forth some of my best play for my favorite format in the near future while we still have time in Gen 9.

It's been an awesome ride so far. I've met a lot of cool people and stolen (sometimes even built) more teams than I could hope for. Shout-out staff shout-out Xurkiyee Mamoo Boomenheimer thebestever543 for being welcoming to me, and to players/builders who I look up to too many to list but
Isza/Kaiser, Bacon, peap, Kate, Molly, Ryuji, Tempo, UD, hidin, sealoo, Seth, Ineros, gbs, jaja, about, omar, Kyo, sluggy, adem, Redgoop, Sami, MrBanana, DBD, bumbo, AM, Sputnik, taka, Wildfire, R8, Runo
HOLY SHIT I FORGOT OCULARS
...so many more lol we are stacked

Here's to the future of ND! Enjoy it, gamers.

Been a pokemon fan since i was like 5.Always enjoyed the game, and when i was 10 or 11, my cousin showed me Showdown and ever since then i was in love with this game.Had periods where i played more or periods where i didn't play at all, but what's for sure is that i always came back.As for natdex. i was pretty frustrated with the dex cuts in gen 8 and so i started playing nat dex.Really started getting into ndou at the end of gen 8, and i was here ever since gen 9 started. Outside of me enjoying the tier, there were also some great people seth and sealoo helped me a lot, especially with building and teams, i remember Adriyun made me feel welcome when i first joined the discord server, Runo R8 for being some very nice and funny individuals, the list is very big and i would prolly reach the word limit if i were to tag everyone who had a positive impact on my NDOU journey. It's safe to say i love this community.I may not have been the best person at times, may have been a little toxic sometimes, but sometimes we all carried away by things that we love. This gen has sure been a chaotic one, but it made the journey all the more interesting.
National Dex is love, National Dex is life.

wow.. so runo and r.8 r funny but not me?

Honestly, this metagame helped me a lot in meeting new people and shaping who I am online and even outside of it.
Not to mention it was partially thanks to y'all that I got into mainline competitive, leading to my performances in Victory Road.
The spice of this place shall eternally season my food, cooked by Lord Pearcy the 154th.
Love y'all

Welp, I guess its time for me to cut through the unserious one liners and post a semi-sentimental, very much late, personal yap essay. Its been a bit, truly. Ive been around for a while, on and off, coming back after announcing my supposed department for the 2nd time in the span of a month. Anyways, Id like to drop a few lines (more than a few, honestly) of my experience within the tier and it's community as means to commemorate five long years of this trashy hellhole weve all got sucked into, and eventually developed feelings for.

As many others have expressed, I started to get into showdown nearing the end of USUMs life span as current gens OU. I didnt play much, usually just had it as a time killer after getting atrociously bored of the mainline games battle AI being so stupefyingly simple and unengaging most of the time. I played on an off, building a few bad sixes, but never committed. It wasn't until the dexcut was announced that turned what was once a small slow burning flame into a rapidly spreading hellish bonfire. With this, I turned to USUM as a means to cope. I discovered samples, the chatrooms (as I was on mobile I didnt know about them), and metagames as a whole.

A few months later, an announcement was made, the introduction of a new tier focused on bringing the dexited mons back into the game along with the previous gen mechanics. I felt inspired, it was just what I needed! And I proceeded to not play a single game of NatDex (Beta), and totally dip. Some time later with the beginning of Covid, when we the world had no other option but to cave into itself for its own good, I joined. I played my fair bit of games, around the time The Big 5 were still running around rampant. I spent about a solid 20% of my time being a hardstuck 1500s ladder goon, and another solid 80% lurking in the chatroom.

School moved to online, and with more than enough time in my hands, I decided I should start mingling with a few regs from around the time. Notably, Sam Sand Man (the GOAT) stood out from the rest of the bunch. For starters, he regularly started pming me throughout the day with random pastes of ideas and... "cooks". With him, and along with other people (some of which are still around, others, well, banned), we established a few side communities for us to mess around in. Building crappy ideas, laddering, beating each other up. Mingling with some of the higher ups, shitting out 5 hard lines of yap justifying or denying any ideas or mons proposed by the other regs, getting shit on by my friends on a daily basis. Gen 8 was the most fun Ive had in any game for any amount of time ever. That was relatively shortlived (3 years), cause of some personal issues I decided it was best to cut myself off from the community for some time to work on myself.

After coming back from my year long break around august, I lurked thru the NatDexcord and ndroom while learning what was what at the moment, trynna get a hang of Tera and its wackyness. I lurked for about a month before I met IRONM0NK3Y808, and later on, boppydop!. After meeting them and messing around, I finally got the courage to take the game seriously, joining a fair share of tours. I even got the chance to play in NDOUFL, my first team tour. I was excited to recognize some faces from my days back in SSND, and some new ones as well whove been very awesome people.

All tho Ive never been more involved in a tier, that enjoyment was also relatively shortlived (but like, actually, like 4 months). Ironm0nk3y dipped, Tera was a hot topic once again after cries for a third suspect, which eventually was conceded. For a whole month the community felt very hostile and uninviting, with people left and right confessing how they dont see Natdex as a serious tier and thus it shouldnt be tiered seriosly. Heated debates on what should and shouldnt be done, where the tier should go, even going as afar as making very harsh accusations towards council. As well as a certain individual singledhandly dipping the quality of the discussion with, quite frankly, very awful takes and with streams of stawmans and adhominems. It felt quite awful. And so, I started exploring other tiers, something I was never willing to do.

So ive been having some pretty decent success down in the fairy old gens, occasionally participating in their teambuilding comps and other such projects. Eventually i got the green light to even revamp ORAS' speed tiers which was honestly a very fun experience. I even got the chance to play in Medieva PL, which on one hand i dont think i should be in bcuz im honestly not good enough, but on the other hand, its really pushing me to give it my best. In the end, it was a wild ride. I dont have a single regret, well, not joining tours back then. But regardless, I had mountains of fun, but after the banning of Tera, Ive grown cold towards the tier as a whole. Ironic, but what can I do about it. Im more than happy that the ban has sparked so much activity tho, and has reignited a passion for others. But unfortunately, I cant say the same for myself.

But yeah, its been fun. I bid yall adieu. It was fun. Great to come back to seeing Lupla (bye bye, hmph), Ganjafin and Sam Sand Man, meeting ironm0nk3y and boppydop! (medasus, spookycooke, ineros, runicpower419, chilidewd, sh0shin, and wildfree as well.) If yall wanna reach out, ill be hanging around ORAS stuff.
