Arty Art Thread!

Hello there! I've been adviced to create an art thread here, so here it is! I'm going to share my artstuffs here that I generally like. I'll also update the thread as I make new stuff.

I welcome criticism! I'm one of those people who believe that it's the best way to improve themselves. You don't even really need to be especially polite about it or anything, I'm used to... less than pleasant critics scrutinizing my work, ahah.

Anyways, in no particular order:

Crashing this server... with no survivors!

I felt like doing some sort of speed draw, so I took an old idea, revamped it a little, and then rolled with it. I left out the sketching part since it was just a lot of experimenting and me trying to get angles right. And a lot of time. The idea itself is an inside joke of sorts within a Showdown server.

The speed draw thing itself is here.

My choice of human characters grew stale and boring after a while since I only have a pool of two to pick from, so I decided to design one more. So here's Hikaru!

I'm hiding all the character thinking and lore stuff because they take a lot of space
This time around, I wanted to base my design around historical Japan, because I somehow never done that before. The visual design here revolves around the contrast of a little child wielding a huge polearm, and also the contrast of speed and power. Hence, I made them a duality of sorts, with a male and female side, with the female forgoing speed for power and the male forgoing power for speed.

Lore wise, the actual character is the handle of the polearm, not the humans. I haven't fleshed out the details yet, but the very rough (and cheesy) gist of it is that the polearm's handle is created by a craftsman with ebony along with steel for the guard. But before he could finish the weapon's blade, he was unjustly convicted of a crime involving the polearm and sentenced to death. At the final moments of his execution, the polearm, which was placed in front of the guillotine, gained a soul and projected itself as female Hikaru, who swings the handle, now fitted with a blade the size of her body, and cleaves the guillotine's blade in two. She pleads for the case to be reviewed, and in the end, the craftsman is acquitted from the charges and the actual perpetrator arrested. Hikaru then became worshipped as a minor deity of sorts and protects the local area.

Male Hikaru's background is even less fleshed out, but the gist is that during an attack by a band of raiders, Hikaru was unable to save everyone since even though her swings are powerful, she greatly lacks the speed to evacuate everyone fast enough. This weighed heavily on her, and was further cemented when she overheard a group of women discussing the incident at the market, with her being in disguise to buy foodstuffs. They also discussed how the craftsman, who now acts pretty much as Hikaru's guardian and father, would be better off being blessed by a male child (due to the culture), and that they would feel safer having a male as their guardian deity. Hikaru later asks the craftsman if he would prefer having a male child instead. The craftsman answers that though a male child would be nice, he is thankful for Hikaru and wouldn't wish for it to be any other way. Regardless of the craftsman's answer, however, Hikaru creates a male counterpart to satisfy the wants of the local community. This counterpart also forgoes strength for speed in response to the incident with the raiders.

There really isn't a specific real life location for this lore yet. I may decide to pin it somewhere on the globe, or I'll make up some sort of fantasy country for it.

The handle of the polearms, as stated before, is made of ebony. The guard is made from steel. The blade is pure white, and is a material that's identified by modern science, but not the medieval age they're in. (<- basically an excuse for not knowing what the blade's material should be yet)

The blade changes depending on which persona is active: naginata (polearm) for female, and yari (spear) for male. Only one persona can be active at a time. They can, however, switch nearly at will, including in the middle of battle. This allows them to use each other's strengths to cover the other's weaknesses.

The male and female parts of Hikaru are different consciousnesses, but share the same being. Female Hikaru is more elegant and calm, and as such would attend functions and other official events in place of her male counterpart. On the other hand, male Hikaru is wilder by comparison, and would step in whenever the need for that arises. In combat, obviously, male Hikaru would step in whenever more speed is needed, while female Hikaru steps in when more power is needed.

I'm not sure how age will work in this case, but I'd guess it doesn't apply to Hikaru.

Female Hikaru's hairband is instead used as a bracelet by male Hikaru. The hairband, too, is made of ebony, and helps them focus mana to channel through the polearms. In this context, mana is the equivalent of magic, but more specifically refers to the energy used to use said magic.

I like how these turned out! I'll probably use them in the future alongside my other characters for various purposes. Since the characters are still considerably rough around the edges, I'll take time to polish them up too sometime.

A certain dream reminded me that I haven't drawn stuff for myself in a while, so I did just that. It felt great for a change. Gardevoir is never not fun to draw, so I did a small doodle of her. I never actually drew a sky full of stars so I had to look up a tutorial, but I think it turned out pretty alright.

Well, this piece has quite the history.

So I got a new tablet, and wanted to do a tablet test. So I did, and I just re-drew the Yellow picture I had a few years ago. And then I thought, hey, why not just go all the way and redraw the whole thing? So I did. But then I heard about dA's Summer Card Project and wanted to take part in it. So I made greeting cards out of that picture.

I tried out something new with the hair, with pointers my sister gave me. I hope that turned out okay!

I started out with the "wishing you a summer full of love and affection", but then a friend of mine pointed out that something more upbeat and informal would do a better job at making someone's day, something like "the sun's pretty friggin' cool, and so are you, stay cool my dude". I had my doubts, but then realized that it'd actually really make my day if I received that while being stuck in a hospital bed. So I put that in, and will send two cards.

This isn't exactly a picture, but here's a link to the directory of a nuzlocke I'm doing right now.
At one point, I promised that I'd make a harder nuzlocke to compensate for the Platinum one that I ditched. So I started a nuzlocke for Pokemon Reborn.

I originally had this as part of a bigger image, but I lost interest in finishing that so here, have the only completed part. :D;;

Will I ever stop rehashing this character? No, probably not.

I'm hiding all the character thinking and lore stuff because they take a lot of space
I tried taking a direction in which I want the character to go, and I decided upon the idea of what actually would happen if a young human being was deployed to fight. Obviously, it's a very common trope to have kids save the world, fight evil et cetera, but looking deeper, there are consequences and complications should that happen in a society that is similar in construct to our present one.

The most obvious point is the topic of child soldiers. Child soldiery is bad and I'm in no way defending it, but it would be interesting to explore this idea. I think it has become so normal in fictional culture for children with special powers and latent abilities to rise against the dangers and adversaries threatening the greater good, and that it'd be a good aside to explore how the character wants to fight, but society sees them fighting as a taboo, and which sides the audience would actually take.

Another fun thing to explore would be a child's naivety. The character is fighting; but what for? Should the character's resolve be powerful, would she be vulnerable to manipulation by less-than-moral higher-ups? One can argue that she "fights for what is right", but a child's perception of what is right may be heavily warped by the environment they are raised on, arguably more so than adults. Also, as stated on previous versions, Cleon's 15. She's at that age where she thinks she's invincible and can go "1v1 me fgt" to anyone and come up on top (and as an aside, I plan to have that trait at least somewhat represented in her actual personality). However, she IS primarily a support mage, and she is definitely not adept in the art of dueling. She thrives sitting back behind the front lines, where she can properly support it and occasionally pick off stragglers one by one. And don't get me wrong, she does know this, and isn't stupid, but sometimes, emotion rules out logic and reasoning.

Additionally, due to lack of experience, Cleon is incapable of controlling the amount of mana created to cast a spell. Generally, this means that there's excess mana stuck inside her body. Mana, especially Lightning mana, is harmful to the body, but before this I established the fact without any real solution other than "don't overuse spells". This time, I made it so that her coat expells any extra mana from her body, as well as being able to cast some very basic spells (I'm thinking along the lines of a self speed/agility buff to grab an out-of-reach staff, which may lead to some interesting storytelling). This also lets storytelling be more flexible and nor limited to an arbitrary amount of spells as a limit, while the glowing trail of expelled mana can be an interesting art (and story; imagine igniting all that expelled mana) directive. Self-buffing does mean she captures some of the mana inside herself, though, so damage from those is pretty unavoidable. Healing spells are traditional and don't really follow elements, so I'd think they wouldn't damage people. The part where damaging others also hurts them is complicated to work around, but I might as well just make it so that it really only has long-lasting effects on children.

More on things pertaining to the actual character: the staff has some sort of "sniper" function where it can fire fast-moving projectiles made of mana, but it's not exclusively an offensive tool. It can fire projectiles at allies that heal or buff them. Otherwise, the top side of the staff acts just like a normal mage's staff does, with it conjuring fireballs and all that classic stuff. It's durable enough for melee combat and the "blade" section can hurt, but obviously this isn't recommended.

All the old things apply here. Her innate element is Lightning, and she still does a fair amount if self-buffing. Lightning, a very destructive element, still has negative impacts on her body if allowed to accumulate, though the coat helps with this by expelling excess mana. She's physically weak and considerably fast, while running mana through her body can increase her abilities at the cost of slowly damaging herself.

All in all, I haven't exactly completely fleshed out this character, but these points would probably be the ones I'd dive into first when I actually get around to do it. Did I miss anything? I sure hope not.

I did another stream thing. So here, have a Ralts playing video games.

I tried to use the same coloring and pallet techniques D_what suggested to me last time, it is fun! I'm really going to stick with this kind of choosing color pallets.

Someone requested a simple image thing for use when waiting for streams to be prepared, so I made one! The request included a Ralts and a spanner. I also took D_what's advice and tried to change the way I shade (specifically, blending the colors manually and thinking light over dark). I'll have to work on that part a little more however, as though it was a fun experiment it still felt somewhat awkward doing the lighter parts of the shade prior to the dark.

A little something I made for a friend. He's fond of Gardevoirs, so I took that as a basis and doodled everything around the subject.

I began a nuzlocke comic thing and then lost all motivation to draw it out. I don't have anything past Chapter 1, but I did set up a site, and this was the 404 visual I prepared for it.

A Youtuber who goes by the name LuMario requested this drawn, so here! Since the drawing was going to be spread to a wider audience, I thought I'd go a little all-out with it, ahah.
2ybXpFH.png

I entered a small character design contest, and ended up winning it. I felt like the style and picture itself was really old, though, so I went ahead and redrew it. There was a mandatory character description, too, and this was what I wrote up. (The contest is video game based, so some things I talk about pertain to mechanics, too)
Lancer/Mage
(+ Mana)
Strength: C (B)
Endurance: C (D)
Agility: A (A+)
Magic: B+
Element: Lightning

Cleon, contrary to her elemental affiliation, is pretty quiet. Rarely will she start conversations, and even more rarely will she be able to keep a conversation alive for prolonged periods of time. She also finds it hard to say "no" to requests thrown at her, mostly if the person asking is someone she knows.

In the battlefield, her battle style is nothing short of unique and flashy, the latter quite literally. She has both the capabilities of a Lancer and a Mage, being proficient with lance-type weapons while still being a master mage. Though her age takes its toll on her stats, making Strength and Endurance cap at a meager C, she can make use of her exceptional Agility and Magic to tip the scales in her favor.

Of course, just utilizing Speed won't win you battles. This is also where Magic plays a big role in her combat: Her magic does not consist of projectiles, nor massive crystalizations of pain, and instead mostly consists of buffing. Using her magic, she can expel lightning mana, be it through her weapon or parts of the body, to boost the affected's capabilities for a short time. She can expel mana through her arms or weapon to increase her damage output (and add Electric damage, too), her legs to augment her already great Speed, clothing or armor to repel atacks, or even through her brain, circulation, and nervous systems to enhance reaction. Of course, with her Endurance sitting at a less than desirable C, all these abilities can exhaust her, making her practically useless for the rest of the combat. Not to mention, expelling mana through her body has very slight but cumulative side effects, which is augmented by the fact that lightning is a very destructive element, and that her body is still very young and suspectible to damage.

Though her magic plays the major role in combat, her lance play isn't something to sleep on, either. Her agility also comes in play with her wrists and fingers, not just her legs. By combining the fast lance play and her speed, she's able to overwhelm and confuse her opponents. She starts off with an iron staff, as the weapon allows electricity to be conducted quickly and efficiently, thus resulting is less mana expenditure. However, since her strength is pretty abysmal, it affects two things: 1) Her damage output would be considerably low without augmentation from her magic, and 2) It wouldn't allow her to equip heavy lances, or at least hinder her capabilities enough to justify using a weaker, but lighter lance.

Bladewing Gardevoir was an idea that popped into my mind one day, so it got drawn. It's currently being used as a background for a Showdown server.

I drew up a Lilligant for a VGC-based Pokemon blog. It's cute. Not much else to say about it, ahah.

My Smash 4 main, Rosalina! Yes, I’m one of those guys. The ones who use the Pit costume when using Dark Pit, plays a pocket Zelda, and mains what is probably the most annoying character in the roster. But hot dang if she’s not cute.

I welcome criticism! I'm one of those people who believe that it's the best way to improve themselves.

I love this! It really is a great way to improve and if you actively look for it it takes away some of the "sting" and is a serious catalyst. Not that there aren't other valid ways of improving, of course!

Anyway, some takeaway from me: How are you shading? I'm familiar enough with the colours of your shadows that makes me suspect you're using a mid-opacity black/grey and are painting over a bright colour, possibly messing around with the layer settings? That's fine. It's where most people start, because the human mind thinks shadows = dark and dark = black, therefore shadows = black. You've already got very good positioning on your shadows. But I'd like you to try something for me! It's a set of sub steps but I'm curious to know if it'll trigger anything with your processes!

So, next time you're drawing, and you have your sketch and you're about to colour: (hell even use an older sketch that you've already painted and posted for comparison)

task 1: Instead of a white background, colour the whole thing a medium or medium-dark grey. It'll help balance your contrasts (colours from white can vary from very washed out to far too strong!)

task 2: instead of colouring with the regular base colours of whatever pokemon you're colouring, use a darker, duller shade of the same colour. The colours tend to be in the mid-to-low section of the colour palettes. Advanced task: Instead of navigating directly to the colour, mix it directly on a little section of your page, by mixing the base and a dark grey and using a colour from the middle! Advanced advanced task: Instead of mixing the colours with grey, mix them with a dull navy blue colour instead!

task 3: Reverse your thinking! Instead of painting shades on a bright object, now you're painting light on a dark one instead :) You can do this the same way as you always do, but use white instead of grey or black, and in the opposite areas.
Advanced task: Mix the colours manually like above. Advanced advanced task: do it with a highly saturated bright sunshine yellow instead of with white!

Ideally, at the very least this should get you thinking in terms of light instead of in terms of shade, since in reality things start out dark and are illuminated afterwards. If you've done the advanced advance steps, which I definitely recommend, you'll get a taster for how lighting can be coloured and how colours mix to form subtler but somehow more interesting colours on your base object.

(a lot of things)

Hello! Actually, I already made the transition to using darker colors to shade instead of just using black quite some time ago. For most Pokemon I just use the color pallet from their B/W/2 sprite, and I just estimate the darkness for everything else. I'll see where I went wrong though! There must be a reason it looks like I'm shading black with opacity, after all. Thank you for the kind words though! Shadows and their positioning is an area that I'm less confident in, so I'm glad someone actually thinks it's good.

With the white backgrounds, I never thought of it that way before! The only other time I ever tried this out is when I'm coloring with a relatively light color, since I wouldn't be able to see it with a white background. I'll definitely try a dark grey background the next time I want to color something.

I'll definitely try this out! I don't know if the program I'm using (PS SAI) can do mixing because I'm still very new to it and digital art in general, but once I figure it out I'll definitely give it a shot.

Ooh, this is something I absolutely never thought about before. I've always thought that it would be optimal to do shading first, and then lighting, but I took a peek at your art thread and I can see where you're coming from. This is something that I, again, will definitely try out.

Thank you for the advice! They're very valuable to me, and I will work on trying them out as soon as possible.

Awesome job! I love your soft shading stle and lineart...! Glad to see you started an art thread too! I loo forward to more artwork from you in the future!

PS SAI... is that Photoshop, SAI, Photoshop AND Sai or some weird merger that I'm out of the loop on :o In any case, I main SAI and use Photoshop for touchups *sometimes*; SAI is really speedy and has GREAT blending options. Much better than PS. I always have a "blendy" brush at the ready; basically any blush with a high Blending, medium/high Opacity, medium Dilution, low Persistence, and a soft edge. Then you can colour pick from somewhere in the mess you've made! After a while you'll get to know certain colours just by habit, much faster than dropping them from resource images. I imagine the GF assets were made using a palette that featured black, so that's where that came from.

Another thing to experiment with (though this is much subtler) is using a coloured background, but one that is still pretty similar to grey. If you have a dull red background, any medium colours you use will look kind of cold. But if you have a dull blue background, they'll look warm! Sometimes you might try to correct that by warming/cooling the colours afterwards only to find out it was all just an illusion. Colour theory is a lot of fun :D Also, you don't have to keep the background once the image is finished! You can still replace it with white afterwards, it just might be a little overpowering.

Whoops, sorry, I meant to say PT SAI. I'm bad at these things, ahah ;;
But yeah, I only have SAI, and sadly I'm not loaded enough to afford Photoshop. If I need something to touch up I turn to Paint.NET, but all I ever do with it is center images and such. I'll make a brush just like that for blending then!

Alright, I'll try that then! I feel like backgrounds are one of my weakest parts, so I'm really thankful for your advice.

At one point, I promised that I'd make a harder nuzlocke to compensate for the Platinum one that I ditched. So I started a nuzlocke for Pokemon Reborn.

I originally had this as part of a bigger image, but I lost interest in finishing that so here, have the only completed part. :D;;
