Depends on what you want to get, if you want to be near perfection then you will go through hundreds if not thousands of eggs.

So how exactly does the battle tower "show where the Pokemon's IVs are headed to"? And I AGREED with you on the saving before getting the egg.
simple we all know that you are put there at lvl 50 so your stats have to increase to and with no Evs in your Stat you can clearly just punch in the stats into the Iv calculator showing where the pokemon's ivs are headed to this way you can see the Ivs without using Wi-Fi battles
ive never bred before, but if i do breed, how likely is it that the egg will have good ivs and natures, or ive gotta breed like 20 times?

to tell you the truth it's all trial and error you just have to hope you those kinds of Ivs or the right nature combo and all that

do i need to do a special breeding chain for a bravebird spikes whirlwind roost skarm?

Also can some one explain why it is harder to pass hp and def ivs

there really is no reason to explain it's just harer to pass down i guess

Roost:must chain breed, A pidgeot learns Roost hope i spelt pidgeot right..
Brave bird: breed with a father that knows itEg. Staraptor
Whirlwind: breed with a father that knows whirlwind Eg Staraptor
Spikes: learns at lvl 42

Well... there actually kinda is.
HP and Defense IVs are harder to inherit from the parents than the other IVs. This is different from the other games (RS/FRLG), where each IV has the same percentage of being transferred to the baby (16.67%). The percentages for DP and Emerald are as follows:

HP: 8.02% chance of being inherited
Atk: 19.55% chance of being inherited
Def: 13.78% chance of being inherited
SpAtk: 19.55% chance of being inherited
SpDef: 19.55% chance of being inherited
Speed: 19.55% chance of being inherited

hmm i dont think i would like to go through thousands of riolu eggs
lol

but anyway, if i were to feed my lucario tons of calcium, or watever it is that raises special attack, can i eventually get it to high enough as if it had a high iv but no calcium?

No, Calcium will just give the Pokemon EVs. You have to breed to get good IVs. Just read that breeding guide, and you will easily get pokemon for personal use. Dual-Flawless in Speed and an offensive stat is relatively easy.

yea i know but my question was if i were to give lucario 25 calciums at a special attack iv of 4, would it be roughly the same if i didnt give it any calciums but it had a 31 iv for special attack??

i hate impish so much, its never useful, especially when its on lucario

The thing is, you can never make up the difference IVs make up. For example: if your Infernape has a speed IV of 20 and a +Spe Nature, it will never outrun a Garchomp with 31 IVs, 252 EVs, and a +Spe Nature. If your Infernape can't outspeed Garchomp, it will get raped if you try using it online by Garchomp. This is why breeding for good IVs is important.
