Why do people prefer using toxic orb over flame orb on Guts users? I thought Guts bypassed the -4 penalty to attack and toxic damage builds up way more than burn damage doesn't it?

It doesn't do me much good when I can't start the team to begin with and they don't take kindly to uncompleted teams without explanations.
 
I really hate to ask, but can anyone please help me evolve my conkeldurr and escavalier? I spent all night breeding them, and I need to evolve them for the pokemon VGC today.

The best way to get into a new metagame is through the tutoring session. You get 1-on-1 attention, so it's nice.

Until the next round opens, though, check out other people's teams in the OU RMT boards. Most of the good ones are usually very descriptive and informative. Read some of the rates that a teams get, because that could be insightful as well. You can type up a list of Pokemon or a Pokemon core that have been presented on a team or mentioned in the rates.

Other things you could do - read up on specific pokemon of interest in Dragonspiral Tower and in OU Analyses. You got plenty of resources here.

The difference in HP loss between toxic and burn will not converge until after the end of the third round after the status problem starts. The following illustrates this:

Assume the Pokemon has 303 HP.

Round 1:
Toxic Orb activates / Flame Orb activates

Round 2:
Pokemon loses (1/16) of total HP / Pokemon loses (1/8) of total HP
-> -18 HP / -37 HP (total 18 HP / 37 HP)

Round 3:
Pokemon loses (1/16)*2 of total HP / Pokemon loses (1/8) of total HP
-> -36 HP / -37 HP (total 54 HP / 74 HP)

Round 4:
Pokemon loses (1/16)*3 of total HP / Pokemon loses (1/8) of total HP
-> -54 HP / -37 HP (total 108 HP / 111 HP)

Round 5:
Pokemon loses (1/16)*4 of total HP / Pokemon loses (1/8) of total HP
-> -72 HP / 37 HP (total 180 HP / 148 HP)

As you can see, round 4 is almost the break-even point for toxic and burn, so a Pokemon with Toxic Orb that stays for just 4 or fewer rounds is at an advantage over Flame Orb.

thats a good point.... and plus burn can hold your team back heaps with its attack reduction
 
Is it possible to breed a Skarmory in Gen 5 (without access to Gen 4 TMs, but access to Dream World and breedable Pokemon with Stealth Rock and Brave Bird) to run a set of Stealth Rock/Brave Bird/Roost/Roar?

I've seen Roost to be a DW move but I can't figure out if it's possible to get the above in Gen 5 without having to resort to Weak Armour as the inferior ability.

It's not possible in gen 5. You have to breed for stealth rock/brave bird in gen 5 and roost will not be passed down so it's either roost without SR/Brave Bird or SR/Brave Bird without roost but not all 3 together.

You know... Why would someone use Surf on a JELLICENT (because that's how it's called now. Stop using Japanese names) when it's behind a sub.
 
What would be better for a DD Gyara- Adamant or Jolly, assuming I don't plan on running Moxie? (I.E. What would I outspeed with Jolly that I couldn't with Adamant, and what could I KO with Adamant that I couldn't with Jolly?)
 
On a dream world exeggutor I am breeding, I am trying to decide which egg moves to put on it. Three of them I want on it are ingrain, power swap, and giga drain. But for the last slot, I am undecided between ancientpower and natural gift. Which should I choose?

This is a pretty offensive team. You lack a wall. I suggest gliscor, cresselia, jellicent for a fighting resist, or a skarmory or nattorei for dragon resist and entry hazards. You really need something to switch to. Also, to score more KOs, make your heatran or metagross a pokemon with SR

natural gift. you can pretty much make a special rock type move with more power, or make other moves. But that requires a berry. I would use neither, if you really want an extra coverage move, use psychic to hit fightings or a hidden power. Also, ingrain sucks, it can trap you. I would use sleep powder or leech seed. trust me.

yes it is possible. DW abilities only get passed through if you are a female skarmory and that is just 40% of the time. Breed it with a swanna with roost and brave bird as level up moves.
 
roost is not an egg move on skarmory. sorry i've tried breeding one, roost doesn't pass down. you either have to go with weak armor(no whirlwind/bravebird) or breed in 4th gen if you want roost skarmory

Yeah, I know, most of those moves wouldn't be on the competitive set for it, I was just wanting four egg egg moves.
