Ask an Uber Question, Get an Uber Answer

Kyogre, it fits on any team, Rain support is awesome, and it has great stats.
Such a fallacy, Latias is the perfect glue to most teams, as she has good enough power and better bulk than her brother. She already comes with a boost making her a lot more powerful, and actually places her ahead of Kyogre. She also has the speed to check most threats, such as Kyogre and Palkia, and even non scarf chomp.

another question...

-in uber RMTs, the word "check" comes up a lot. what exactly is this "check"?
-can both mews be used awesomely in one uber team? baton passer + sweeper?
-what buffs DO mews pass, anyhow?

- A check is a Pokemon that can semi-reliably beat the Pokemon they are checking. Whereas a counter is able to switch in with safety and defeat the Pokemon (eg Blissey to non-Safeguard/Refresh Lati@s), a check cannot really safely switch in unless you predict well (eg ScarfChomp checks Rayquaza, but cannot switch into Outrage/Dragon Claw/Draco Meteor, etc). Most of the Ubers are strictly uncounterable, therefore checks are the next best thing.
- I don't know what you mean by "both Mews". I'm assuming you mean Mew and Mewtwo. Yes, my first Ubers team that got me into the leaderboard had both Mew and Mewtwo in it (Although not BP/Sweeper, it was Lead Mew and Sweeper Mewtwo). A lot of Baton Pass Mew teams have Mewtwo as a Dual Screener, with Taunt/Reflect/Light Screen/Selfdestruct, allowing Mew to have a free switch. There's also no problem with passing boosts from Mew to Mewtwo either, save for the fact that they both have the same type and weaknesses, which means it would be harder for Mew to pass to Mewtwo.
- Mew can pass +2 of any stat. Swords Dance for Attack, Nasty Plot for Special Attack, Barrier for Defense, Amnesia for Special Defense and Rock Polish for Speed. Mew can also pass stuff like Calm Mind and Bulk Up.

wouldnt it hurt your team to have a passer and a suicide screener? or no? im a newbie so all this means something to me.

An easier definition of a check is something that can come in on a safe turn (ex: after a kill) and force the opponent's pokemon out.

Example being: Scarf palkia to DD Rayquaza. Scarf Palkia outspeeds ray, and ohko him with Spacial rend.

okay, im getting a free legit UT mew soon from a trade thread (yay!) but i have trouble placing it in my team.

it has many possibilites:
-Super Fang Harass <suicide or BP variations>(SD/Icebeam/Super Fang/Explosion or BP)
-Mewtwo's infamous Taunt-WoW
-U-Turn lead
-Synchronize+status orb (this hasn't been tested but i read it somewhere)

so then i decided to come up with a team, THEN find mew's purpose. but that didn't make it any easier...

Mewtwo does stalling better, while SyncroOrb doesn't work. You're better off using it as a lead, Baton Passing, or Swords Dance sweeping.

Super Fang or lead are your best options. Mewtwo can pull off the defensive, because of massive speed, something mew lacks. The synch status strategy maybe interesting, but lum leads kill it.

Uber Team Support
Jolly @ <need help choosing item>
Swords Dance (buff for Explosion or to pass, a +2 is own)
Super Fang (yay weaken hp by half)
Ice Beam (super fang cant hit giratina, so)
Explosion/BP (finish off that dialga in 2hko SF+asplode, or just BP is to RQ for outrage sweep)

or

this needs testing, though. you really think it'll work?

this is my basic outline for uber team, not necesarily in this order, though. edit this PLEASE, i will make an RMT later. but i need help taking out/replacing PKMN.

Mew; super fanging SD passer (BP annoyance is pwnsome)
Mewtwo; sp sweep
Rayquaza (Seeing those Mews, this was obvious; phys sweep)
Giratina (absorb the sleep from Darkrai; wall)
Darkrai (teehee, this sucker is too good to be missed; lead)
Groudon; mixed attacker

Just personally I feel that Groudon is outclassed by other pokemon at mixed sweeping in ubers. I think that a Mixed Dialga is a much better choice for the team. I would also recomend SR on the team somewhere.

Have a Nice Day!

is there a place where metagross has an ubers analysis? If not, what is the typical scarfgross set + evs? I've given him 220 speed evs to outspeed max speed darkrai and anything that aims to beat darkrai by one point (correct me if wrong), plus max attack and threw the rest in HP. Is there a specific spread that lets me get certain KOes or survive certain attacks?

I cant really attest to a specific spread that will get specific KOs as i've only had a lot of experience with the Choice Bander, but you dont need that extra point in speed for stuff that goes 1 higher then Darkrai. All things that can outspeed Darkrai simply run max speed.

For ScarfGross, I'd just run 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spe Jolly so it outspeeds Shaymin-S. You sit one point under Mewtwo, which is a shame.

Is it okay if use these pokemon together?

I would like the following pokemon to be on my team.
Infernape OU
Staraptor BL
Roserade OU
Rampardos NU
Gastrodon NU
Drapion UU

I will be using these pokemon for my in-game team
but then I would like to make them into my competitive battling team and I was wondering if I could use team in the same team. I;m not sure because some are OU and others NU,etc. so please help. I'm sorry if i posted this in the wrong place. ALso, where do questions like this go? thanks

first off, just because a poke is NU, UU, or BL, does not mean it cannot be used in OU. However, they are lower for a reason, they are generally outclassed in OU. Also, this is for ubers, things like kyogre and dialga, which will tear that team to shreads. That post goes in the SQSA thread, but first, read these: http://www.smogon.com/dp/articles/intro_comp_pokemon
http://www.smogon.com/dp/articles/pokemon_dictionary
http://www.smogon.com/articles/tiers learn about the different tiers
Also, lurk a lot. You may make an occasional post, but sit back for a month or so and just learn about smogon and look at other posters.
Good luck and welcome to smogon!

Also, thanks shrang, outspeeding skymin is fun, and yes, I was very sad when I saw he missed mewtwo by 1 point

Since this has nothing to do with Ubers, it wouldn't go in the Ubers subforum. Also, I recommend lurking for a while as well. Take a look at other teams made by good players in the RMT forum. Competitive teams are based around synergy of the members, not putting together ostensibly random Pokemon.

For example, a popular style of team in Ubers is the Ho-oh team. This team uses Forretress to use Rapid Spin to get Ho-oh onto the field, and a Groudon to set up the sun, SR, and maybe even paralyze someone so Ho-oh can do even better. Ho-oh is the centerpoint of this team, being a great stallbreaker, check on dudes like Mewtwo and Darkrai, and lure for other dudes like Kyogre and Palkia. The rest of the Pokemon cover weaknesses that Forretress, being setup fodder for many threats, brings. We would take something like a Latias or Palkia of our own to beat enemy Kyogre.

So the team we get so far is

Forretress (lead) / Groudon / Ho-oh / Latias

Then we get 2 more Pokemon or so to supplement our strategy and help check various threats.

This is just an example of how teams are constructed in Ubers, there are many kinds of teams you can make.

And as a final note, don't use a lower-tier Pokemon just to be "original", use it only if it fulfills a particular niche you need on your team.

Hope I helped!

Yes. Yes it is.

No seriously, the only Arceus legitimately released is at level 100, and as such, you can't place more than 100 EVs into any given stat. Sadly, Shoddy does not have a way to restrict this, and as such it cannot be used in competitive Uber play at all.

Having formerly battled on YouTube, I've just about seen the worst of the worst. Arceus may make a great anti-lead in Ubers but it's not worth reliving that. :p Thanks for the quick answer.

Is a modest kyogre with 252 sp atk and 252 speed worth it or does it not do any better with the ev spread of 124 HP / 252 SpA / 132 Spe
