Barry Bonds

Last night Barry Bonds tied Hank Aaron hitting his 755 career homerun. A feat that many should cheer but that is not the case because according to The Book of Shadows and the BALCO investigations, Barry Bonds has used steriods. There is still no proof on the matter but that doesn't stop the "cheater" chants, the "*" signs, or the all around scrutiny surounding Barry Bonds. Many people believe that Bonds, a "dirty player", shouldn't hold a prestigious record such as The Alltime Homerun Record.

I, for one, am looking foward to Barry Bonds breaking the record. I'm going to try and watch as many of Bond's at bats as i can because for me it is going to be a historic moment in baseball. But i know that plenty of people don't want to see Bonds break the record. So i'm curious about how you guys view the whole situation.

I don't really care much for baseball but of course this is all over the media, and I've taken interest. I don't see what the big deal is; someone else can hit home runs better than Hank Aaron. That's not going to change how anyone else feels about Aaron, or Babe Ruth for that matter. Steroids or not Barry Bonds will break the record, and even if no one celebrates it should still be seen as an achievement. He's a pretty good home run hitter, and I heard on TV or read somewhere that even if he didn't use steroids, he'd be at least at 650 runs.

I'm kind of annoyed about how everyone is taking this like baseball will be ruined forever, but otherwise I'm kind of indifferent. In all honesty I just want him to hit 756 so the sports media can focus on something else.

Well, IBshitstorm.

Anyways, I don't think it really matters much because even if he breaks ten million home runs or whatever, it doesn't change the fact that 99 percent of true fans think he's a big brown (BAN ME PLEASE), since, even if it is decided that he hadn't doped himself up (which IMO is highly unlikely), he's still a cocky arrogant douche. Fan rejection, really, is retribution enough.

Also, different sources will tell you different things in regards to how many runs he would have or would not have scored, barring 'roids.

Gah. IIRC the baseball commisioner's stance was that he would recognize but not celebrate the feat. Seems like it shouldn't really count- he het all those home runs but it wasn't really his stregnth doing it, it was just the power of the steroids. Obviously it's not like we can draw a line and say "after home run #316 he was roiding so they don't count" but we can't say he broke the record, either, cuz it wasn't him.

"So what if they were legal when he used them, this is a moral issue."

Basically, this.

That's why his feat is incomparable to Aarons' legacy and should not be rewarded thusly.

It's cool and all that Bonds tied the record, though the news media has been making such a big deal out of it that it doesn't mean anything. Whether it's the actual number he's about to hit or just hit or whether he's using steroids, I just don't care. The whole thing is just very overrated.

Morals be damned. I'm sure Aaron did some shit that we don't even know about because the media is so damned on trying to make Bonds look bad. Just because he did everything in his power to get better that was LEGAL, that shouldn't be taken away from him so get off Aaron's balls.

No thanks it is very comfortable there.

Also, you can damn said morals all fucking day, but when it comes down to it, more people are inclined to hate his guts than embrace him. Take that how you will.

Quite frankly, who's to say that Aaron wouldn't have taken steroids had they been prevalent in professional sports during his era? People can gripe about it all they want, but I don't care if Bonds has used steroids; it's become part of the game now.

One last thing: Alex Rodriguez is on pace to hit 900+ home runs anyway. He'll break the new record for sure, and rest assured, he did not take steroids.

the funny thing is how little this matters as this is a-rods record, its only a matter of time...and this is coming from a blue jay fan/yankee hater.

let bonds enjoy his 7 years of holding the record, after that he will just be #2 again.

It doesn't even matter that he uses steroids because so many others do the same crap. Oh and lets look at other professional sports such as the NFL. What if 2 or 3 Indianapolis Colts were on steroids in last years super bowl. Will the title be taken from them? don't think so. I know that one super bowl and the home run record are completely different, but in sports it seems like its the thing to do to get ahead. Oh and like someone said earlier, let's just get this crap over with so ESPN can start focusing on a real sport... the NFL.

Hmm, lots of question dodging, I see. It doesn't matter what Aaron might have done, or what A-rod did, or what's going on in the NFL. The fact remains that Barry Bonds isn't getting this record because he's a great hitter, it's because he's boosted by steroids.

Although at the pace A-rod is moving he will shatter the record the fact is that is still years away and A-rod is susceptible to being injured. Years ago everyone though Griffey was going to be the one to break it and he was. But he was plagued with injurey and the same could happen to A-rod.

Also people forget that hitters aren't the only ones to use steriods. No one knows how many pitchers used HGH. So how much of an advantage did Bonds recive by using steriods. I know not a very convincing statement but i'm just throwing the idea out there.

Also they say it on Espn all the time but you notice that people always talk shit about bonds and maybe the majority don't like him but when he steps to the plate to break the record the stadium stands up and cheers and hopes for a homerun.

The fact remains that Barry Bonds isn't getting this record because he's a great hitter, it's because he's boosted by steroids.

He is also the career leader in walks with over 2400 and has over 500 steals and almost 3000 hits. Barry Bonds was a great hitter before steriods. I forgot that steriods helped him obtain the greatest eye in baseball history. Barry Bonds get his hit off of waiting for pitchers mistakes. He waits on pitches and then sits on hangers.

Also no one pays attention to how huge of a stadium he had to deal with

Bonds

AT&T Park

Left Field - 339 ft / 103 m
Left-Center - 364 ft / 111 m
Deep Left-Center - 404 ft / 123 m
Center Field - 399 ft
Deep Right-Center - 421 ft
Right-Center - 365 ft
Right Field - 309 ft

Hank Aaron

Milwaukee County Stadium

Left Field - 315 ft
Shallow L.C. - 362 ft
Deep L.C. - 392 ft
Center Field - 402 ft

Deep R.C. - 392 ft
Shallow R.C. - 362 ft
Right Field - 315 ft

Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium

Left field: 330 ft.
Left-Center: 385 ft.
Center Field: 402 ft.

Right-Center: 385 ft.
Right Field: 330 ft.

421 in right field and don't say thats only right field he pushes alot of them. If you watch baseball you might know that they use the bonds shift when bonds is up and no one is on second or third. (they also use this against david ortiz and jason giambi) This is when the second basemen will play in shallow right field and the shortstop usually just to the left of second base. Leaving only the third basemen between second and third. So no don't say he pushes alot of his homeruns.

Also guys one more set of stats.

Hank Aaron Games played 3298
Barry Bonds Games played 2956
Hank Aaron at bats 12364
Barry Bonds at bats 9768
Hank Aaron IBB293
Barry Bonds IBB 679

Edit: All the stuff after the quote was the edit just responding to Bonds not being a great hitter.

Speaking of A-Rod and morals, wasn't this the same A-Hole who just shouted out 'mine' a few weeks ago?
No one knows and no one cares, the Yankees won that game whether he yelled "mine", "ha", or anything else. A bush league play =/= breaking one of the most lauded pro sports records while under the suspicion of steroids. I bet you no one will remember Arod's play when everything is all said and done, it was too insignificant, and cannot be compared to using steroids which affects more than just one play in one game.

So what if he used steriods, they were legal when he did them. End of the conversation.

Anabolic steroids (HGH, Clear, etc) were placed on the Banned Controlled Substance list back in 1990 which made it a federal crime to posses and use these substances, punishable by up to 7 years in prison. MLB had no penalties for steroid users, but they did have a policy on its legality. So in essence IT WAS NOT LEGAL to use steroids, in fact it was (still is) highly illegal punishable by the federal government. By the time MLB enacted a testing program and penalties for using steroids (2002) it might have been too late (Barry already broke the single season record), but that does not take away the fact it was still illegal.

I think my opinion on Barry Bonds is the same as the person at Petco Park who threw a Syringe at him. Especially `cause I'm a Padres fan. Just hope that the record doesn't get broken at Petco. It got tied at Petco Park, but it's not going to be brok-

Oh shit, Germano's pitching. Fuck a duck.

Meh, I've always wanted Bonds to break the record. If he did use steroids, I don't really care. To me, steroids are not that big of a deal, and I never really considered them cheating. Oh well, just my opinion I guess. :P

I don't think that people would be nearly as negative or angry with him if he wasn't, in addition to the steroids, a complete asshole.

not going to excuse it, but steroids in baseball I doubt have as much impact as in a sport like cycling. He probably would have beaten the record regardless (I know he hasnt yet!).

Tour de France, now thats a real issue.

I really don't follow baseball a lot but here's my two cents anyway.

I really don't care if Bonds used steriods or not. We ARE in the steroid era, he certainly had to have faced dozens of pitchers with the same "advantage" as him, and despite the MLB being more home run driven than ever, I don't see a lot of the other hundred plus steriod users coming close Hank Aaron's record. He undoubtably has to have quite a bit of talent as a hitter to do what he did.

I don't think there is any concievable way I could care less about baseball but the fact that he has been on every major multi-sport news show at least once a week for about four years running has caused me to form an opinion on him and while I would be surprised if the effect of the steroids aren't being greatly exaggerated by the media that hates him so much it still irritates me that he will break the record. I don't think there's any record in any proffesional sport that will last forever so it was only a matter of time until this got broken anyway, but I really hate him as a person from what I've seen of him in interviews and such so him breaking what is probably the most important single player record in baseball is sort of depressing.
