Edit: The second new character has been released! It is the Pokemon Trainer! He uses Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard, who you may switch between in battle. I wonder how many more completely unexpected characters we will get...

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Release Date: December 3rd, 2007! (Revealed at E3)

With the website being updated every weekday, I thought it would be nice to hear everyone's opinions on items, game mechanics, and the character roster. Many returning characters have been revealed. A good few things have been revealed such a couple of new character's B moves, the music composers and many clips of songs to be heard in the game, a few stages, and how the "Final Smash" works, not to mention insight to how the controls for each controller type works.

So what do you guys think of the Smash Ball/Final Smash? I think the general consensus is that it will probably be banned from tournament play and that it can probably be turned off either in the items menu or from its own separate switch. This is probably true, in my opinion, but its too bad that those cool moves have to go to waste.

Confirmed Roster:
Mario
Link
Pikachu
Kirby
Metaknight
Pit
Samus
Zero Suit Samus*
Wario
Snake
Fox
Zelda
Bowser
Donkey Kong
Yoshi
Ike
Peach
Pokemon Trainer**
Diddy Kong

*Only known way to use her is to use the Final Smash with Samus. Whether you can select her a la Sheik or in another way remains to be seen.

**This character consists of a Pokemon Trainer (similar to Red) who stands in the background and gives orders to a Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Charizard. You may switch between these three.

Petey Piranha has been shown in a cutscene, but has been shown to be a boss character, which may become the fate of many more would be characters.. Sheik has not been mentioned, and there have been many arguments as to whether she should stay or not. Not to mention that there has been a symbol included for Yoshi, who is all but confirmed, and strangely enough an Animal Crossing symbol. Does this implicate a character? With Tom Nook seen in the background of the stage, it is a mystery of whether the stages and symbols will still be semi-confirmation of the main characters of their franchise. It seems to me like they have moved past that and decided to use stages from games who don't contribute to the fighter list, and I guess they still include symbols for those stages. Oh yeah and Samurai Goroh isn't going to make it, he is an item. Deoxys won't make it either sadly, he comes in pokeball form...

PS: I want Ridley for Brawl.

SSBM was one of my favorite games of all time. Brawl is the only reason why I'm getting a Wii.
That said, I don't really want any specific characters, but I hate the concept of Snake being in it.
Delfino Plaza is a cool map to add, Mario Sunshine was a cool game.

I play Smash competitively, so I'm definitely pumped for this game. I'm less interested in what characters they will add, and more in what new advanced techniques may show up in this game.

Brawl is the main reason I bought the Wii. I hope they start revealing new characters on the site soon.

The Final Smashes are probably going to be balanced out, and chances are smash balls are rare.

Brawl is pretty awesome lookin so far.
I just hope they keep the wavedash in the game.
Does anyone know if it's supposed to be in melee because i thought it was a glitch or something?

Same.

I want to like the Smash Bros. "Supers" idea. But it seems poorly implemented. If it does act as an item throughout all game modes, then you're quite correct, it will be turned off.

If you had to work towards it. i.e. In the same manner as you build meter in Street Fighter then I have no problem with it. It would serve to make end-stock game more interesting. Much as I love smash, I don't dispute that you could make bouncing an opponent at 200% around the stage more interesting.

Isn't that the million dollar question.

I personally believe the should be at least 10 new characters. Sonic is almost a guarantee character coming in, since if Snake got in, there is NO reason he shouldn't be in it. Otherwise, I hope that Falco makes it back, and he gets to keep his amazing SHL and shine combos. But meh, I'll be happy with whatever they give us for the first year, at least.

Actually I'm looking forward to which Fire Emblem characters will get in, over almost any other additons to the game. I already have a few guesses of who will make it =/

I like how some days they update us with cool things like the gooey bomb, or pit's special moves, but other times they tell us how to use your ^B to recover, or something lame like that. It really makes every day a mystery.

I'm pretty sure they said somewhere that the original cast was returning, no matter who or what, although i also read that the axing Young Link/G+W/Ice Climbers was a lie.

When it comes to Fire Emblem characters, i'm pretty sure that the burning castle level flies the Daein flag from Path of Radiance, so expect to see Ike (although i have no idea how he'll be different from Marth/roy)

What i'd love to see if some goofy characters.

People on my lookout list-
King DeDeDe-If the climbers really ARE going out, i'd love for some mallet smash moves
Banjo-Kazooie-This duo is MADE for smash. Beak drills, kazooie bayonets, egg shots?! Banjo handles A moves, Kazooie is the specials. Seems simple enough.
Simon/Richter/Julius Belmont-C'mon, this is just begging for it. B move to projectile crosses, down b to smash a line of holy water, final smash purifying cross? You love it.

I'd love to see Megaman as another 3rd party, but i know that's wishful thinking, seeing as he'd be too much of a kirby/samus clone.

I dont think either pikmin antagonists deserve a moveset, but i'd love to see a pikmin level where you can interact with the pikmin and use them as items.

However, above all, the only thing i'm holding my breath on is Ganondorf.

He's my main character in SSBM, and i play him pseudo-competitevely
(I feel that wavedashing against people who are good but dont wavedash isn't as fun as it is with close duels)

Playing through TP, i love the new 'Dark Knight' Ganon, rather than a Desert King Ganon, my only hope (to the contrary of many) is that he stays a clone. I love his set, and i'm too afraid if they give him his shiny sword, that things will be different.

Look forward to Ridley's signature grab in metroid as his up throw =P

New Characters

New characters aren't going to pop up like Ridley. I guarantee you Ridley will NOT show up as a playable character. Maybe part of stage would be the best for Ridley. If you want to have faith that a character could be part of the roster in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, then you have to realize these three factors.
  1. Does it meet the Nintendo/Not-Anime requirement?
  2. Does the character have enough special moves (or at least, can be truly and logcally stretched) to fill up the B-Button area? (A-Button doesn't matter since it can be fixed)
  3. Can the character be used in-game logically?
  4. Does the character "Make Sense?"
Ridley: Meets requirement #1. Does not meet requirements #2 & #3. #2 is that it only seems to breath fire, fly, and um... fly (throws really don't count in the sense). #3 is that Ridley at least two and a half times taller than Samus. #4 isn't really an issue for Ridley. I think if you don't understand that, then you're not too bright.

So yeah. #3 isn't limited to in-game either. Outside is considered. Let's look at Sonic.

Sonuis: #1 is definitely met. Eight (or is it more?) games on a Nintendo System works. #2 has been getting argued upon by random people, but I think Sonic can easily fill the B-Button slots. Sonic is basically Mario sized, which means that he works as "average" (Not saying that he is average in game for you competitors out there who are looking to seeing him in the game) #4 is easy. Sonic is an eternal 3rd party rival of Mario. Sonic's world is also good fit in the sense of how character act and all. I'll let you figure out Sonic's world and how it would fit into SSBB.

Characters can't simply be put in because you think so. #3 and especially #4 are key ingredients to get into this game. Also, I know #2 & #3 go hand in hand, but #2 shows the special moves that a character uses in his/her/its' game. I feel like going over the only Square-Enix character that even has the slightest chance of getting in. Though, it's not going to happen.

Sora: #1: Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. Though it may not be enough to qualify. Still. #2: If you haven't played KH, KH2, KH:CoM, then you don't know how many moves Sora actually has up his sleeve. #3: "Young Adult" (Hahah, I had to use that) size, Has the Keyblade to use as a weapon, which is an easy restriction by HAL. #4: Sora travels to other worlds to protect them from the Heartless, and now, the Nobodies. SSBB collects characters from different games (*worlds) in order to have battles. Sora's is also the epitome of goody-two-shoes in his game. "You know, you should give Sora some of your hatred. He's too nice for his own good," or however the quote from the beginning for KH2 went.

Still, Sora won't make it. I could keep my hopes up, but I know it won't happen. It's a good thing though that neither Cloud or Sephiroth or anything above that will make it in. God how I would hate it to see a selectable character read, "CLOUD". Bleh.

Also, Gooey Bomb. Gooey Bomb, Gooey Bomb, Gooey Bomb, Gooey Bomb. I hope to actually see people use items. Since some of these new items can be used strategically. Plus, they're just plain cool. I wonder what some of the new Pokémon will pop out of the Poké Balls. We've seen Groudon as a newcomer to the ball.

Fuck.
P.S.: Screw Deoxys, go Lucario.

Counting the seconds till I get to use Pit, and then Meta Knight.

I really can't see anyone else from the Metroid universe appearing in the game, everyone else is either a Samus clone (the SA-X, Dark Samus), or is too large (Ridley and Kraid *used* to be the right size, not anymore).

Kirby will remain my favorite character. I always prefer the light classes because I like to annoy my opponents with dodging, and I can use speed effectively.

Also Meta Knight compared to Kirby seems to me like Young link compared to Link.

Meta Knight and Link: Slower (but still fast), Stronger attacks.

Kirby and Young Link: Faster, weaker attacks.

I can already tell my three favorites by the videos.

Kirby
Meta Knight
Pit (temporary "flight" ability)

and possibly Zero Suit Samus (whose super smash attack rocks)

Ok, lets look at reason #2. Hi my name is Captain Falcon/Ice Climber/Fox/Falco. The too big arguement is dumb, as they can be resized. Have you seen Ridley in the opening intro of melee? Yeah.

And any character can show up in my opinion. This game has had things from Game-and-Watch to snake. Anything can happen. Just because you cant picture ridley fighting in smash bros doesn't mean it's impossible.

Ridley could be in it. I mean they gave Donkey Kong enough moves, even if they are all unimaginative. (OMG A PUNCH! OMG A HEADBONK! OMG HE SPAN REALLY FAST, OMG HE IS HITTING THE GROUND!). They could do the same for Radley.

I Really Want the Fire Emblem Roster to be like this:

- Ike
- Dark Knight
- Hector
- ??? [Another cool Lord, perhaps Lyn to give the gals a cool character]

Since only the Main Characters are likely to be in, I wont get my biggest hope. and that was Oswin/Tauroneo (big badass armor dudes).
But then again, the Dark Knight is big and badass too.

Pokemon Roster:

- Pikachu
- Jigglypuff [Fear the wall of pain!]
- Mewtwo [revamped moves]
- Lucario
- Munchlax

Metroid:

- Ridley

Hes a plasma breathing space dragon/terodaptyl, how much cooler can a character get?

Third Party:

- Snake (im so fucking happy hes in!)
- Viewtiful Joe (hes awsome)
- Sonic (well... i dont want to use him, but i do want to beat him up)

I don't recall Captain Falcon using any of those fancy specials in F-Zero.

exactly. He didn't use those.

Also I am happy that the Yoshi's Story song will be in the game. I still have the game along with an N64. I still remember the song and it brings back some good memories.

Groudon is awesome. He will give you the edge easily. With him around you can

Attack your opponent and retreat behind Groudon for safety. Few characters would actually be able to jump over Groudon, Kirby and the 5 jumpers will, and characters with impressive long distance third jumps. I dont think mario's third jump has enough OOMPH! to give it that extra distance, and even if it did your a sitting duck for your opponent to knock you right back into Groudon.

What do you mean Groudon-Shine combos? Groudon does not hurt the player that called it. Assuming that shine meant using a star to become invincible.

Besides new characters, I wonder if there will be any old characters cut. Some say that Game & Watch or the Ice Climbers could be phased out.

Everyone has pretty much already said what I would say but I'm going to say it anyways.

#2: Captain Falcon can punch and kick. With fire. That's a lot less than Ridley can say.

#3:

I would say Lucario for Brawl, but his canine head conflicts with Fox's (stupid reason I know >_> ) even though it would make perfect sense for him to be in.....

Edit: Pichu will probably be cut IMO.

PS: Also want Krystal and Diddy (maybe Diddy/Dixie combo) and I would love to see Olimar, but he wouldn't really work unless they do something crazy....
lol, shine is Fox's down b aka reflector

I wonder what Kyogre is going to do (assuming he is going to be a pokeball pokemon). Maybe he will make a huge rain storm (half the stage like Groudon) that damages any character caught in it (except the person who released it)

Even better, what will Dialga and Palkai do? I am really hoping that Dialga will freeze time. Allowing you to attack the ''frozen'' players (however they would not move, preventing a cheap KO). Palkia in my opinion should do an unavoidable (50-80% damage) attack.
