BSS Teambuilding & Help Thread (SuMo Edition Reloaded 2.0)

Hi everyone. I wasn't sure if there was a more fitting board to post this in but since X I have wanted to make a team of Green shiny pokemon. Pokemon I think have an attractive green sprite. Obviously very subjective.

I have a few members already, but want to make it as competitive/well-rounded as possible and was hoping for some insight/opinions. Also I am willing to modify movesets accordingly for what I already have.

So far, who I want on my team for sure are:

I would also consider throwing Mewtwo in the mix, but I assume that he will restrict the team from certain online battles and would be hard to obtain anyway, unless he is still shiny locked.

Hey guys, first time posting hoping to get some help. I'm fairly new to online battling, and as most others such as myself I struggle with team building the most. I had a solid charizard Y team back in late ORAS that served me well. It didn't too great in this meta so I built a team around mega Venusaur instead.

I chose Venusaur for one main reason, most stuff I ran into was fairy pokemon. He's proven to be amazing, and has won me so many battles. He's just something I enjoy using.

Greninja @ Focus Sash
Ability: Protean
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature

- Surf
- U-Turn

Greninja. I love this guy, so much speed, power, reliability and his design is great. I chose greninja as a way to deal with psychic, ground and fire types. His ability to be an effective lead with U-turn while destroying common threats such as garchomp or salamence is amazing. I prefer focus sash just as a way to deal with salamence if it's already got a DDANCE up. It's always worked out for me this way. It just seems to work with Venusaur so well. I also prefer surf as it's in between Scald and Hydro Pump. Lacks the burn chance, but more reliable than Hydro.

Landorus-Therian @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 216 Def / 24 SpD / 16 Spe

I chose landorus as a way to cover the flying/ground weakness for Venusaur whilst covering the electric weakness for greninja. I went for the defensive route for two reasons, I already run a scarf pokemon and well I wanted something that could take hits easier. I really like Knock Off as I hate being walled by porygon 2 and chansey, plus it's a solid slow u-turner.

Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

After getting smashed by this pokemon I really wanted it on the team. Absolutely love its terrain Ability, blocking out priority moves, and just the fact it hits hard and fast is amazing. Plus I needed something to cover greninjas fighting weakness, while Venusaur covers the Poison weakness.

Magnezone @ Choice Specs
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 128 HP / 252 SpA / 128 Spe

I don't really know why I chose Magnezone to be honest. I guess in my mind at the time I wanted a decent Volt switcher and a solid out to steel types. I like the fact it gives me a t wave immunity and a way to cover greninja. But I'm not sure.

The last slot. This is the one I struggled with the most. I know the terrain conflicts with e. Speed, but I suppose my mindset was the terrain won't always be there. I needed something to hit physical, and to be able to take on special defence tanks like porygon, chansey, blissey etc. Honestly not sure. Please if anyone can think of something else I'd be grateful. It has done well, but it just adds another Earthquake weakness.

So there's the team. It's currently 8-3. I know it's not the best (but I'm not either), but it's done well. I honestly just need some help with it as I always hit a brickwall in my mind when building. I'm getting better at battling, it's just the building.

I apologise in advance for the descriptions, not great at explaining my reasonings.

The Pokemon you listed are all unviable apart from Espeon and Scizor. (Mega) Venusaur is quite good but it isn't very easy to use for newer players. Druddigon is straight up outclassed by Mega Salamence and Dragonite. Ursaring is very bad.

I hate to be blunt but if you aren't looking for competitive advice you've come to the wrong place. You'll get absolutely nowhere with Druddigon, Tangrowth, Ursaring, and Kabutops. It's cool if you wanna use a "fun" team or your favourites but just be prepared to not get anywhere.

So what you are saying is you can only use a select group of pokemon to compete and if you go outside of that meta you are wasting your time and people's expertise is worthless because all they know about is how to work with pokemon that fall within the meta standards?

Not at all, I'm probably the bigggest user of gimmicks here and encourage creative teambuilding to everyone. However there are 800+ Pokemon now and Druddigon, Ursaring, Kabutops (without rain), and Tangrowth are the bottom of the barrel. If you want to use Pokemon like that then go and try RU/NU/PU, but in Battle Spot where there are megas banned in OU allowed they won't cut it.

edit: I made an all-pink team so I'd love to help you but if you want to use the actual worst pokemon you can you're out of luck.

So I'm looking to build a team around these two Pokemon:

Nihilego @ Life Orb/Focus Sash
Ability: Beast Boost
Level: 50
EVs: 84 HP / 172 SpA / 252 Spe

- Power Gem
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]

Nihilego is my favorite Gen VII Pokemon, and as far as I can tell it's a pretty usable one. The moves are all pretty standard, but I opted for an EV spread that has Beast Boost increase speed over special attack. The logic I had is that Nihilego has trouble with revenge killers. If it has a speed boost, then it's trickier to revenge kill. The downside is that the power drop is pretty noticeable, so a Life Orb makes up for that somewhat. Alternatively, a Focus Sash could help Nihilego live long enough to 2HKO something. The added bulk also gives Nihilego a chance to survive unboosted Tapu Lele's Psychic from full.

Maybe HP Fire would be better here than HP Ice, but the only Nihilego I have is HP Ice, so that's what I'm going with. Besides, it's nice to snipe Garchomp and Landorus-T with it.

Tapu Koko @ Electrium Z

A pretty standard Koko set. I opted for HP Fire since Nihilego also has trouble with Steel types, and repeated HP Fires from Koko could help wear those down (and the only Koko I have has HP Fire so I'm kind of stuck with it). U-turn helps Koko bounce off Alolan Marowak, which is nice since that's something Nihilego can kill or at least force out.

Since both Pokemon here are weak to Ground and have issues with Ground types in general, I was thinking a Flying type or something else that beats Ground types would be a great partner. Gyarados sounds nice since on top of being my favorite Pokemon period it's immune to Ground (well, if it's not Mega Evolved) and can help fight those off. It's also resistant to Steel, something Nihilego also appreciates. Celesteela also sounds really nice, but alas the only one I have is Sassy natured when so far this team's looking really offensive. I've also considered Tapu Lele for anti-priority support (and because Lele's freaking strong in general), or Alolan Ninetales for Aurora Veil and possibly more anti-Ground type support.

Beyond that, I'm still working my way around the Battle Spot metagame, so some more advice would be appreciated.

Because Breloom, Ferrothorn, Serperior, and Mega Venusaur all exist. Tangrowth offers nothing over these, especially since Regenerator is less valuable in the fast-paced 3v3 environment. And if you look at the current 30 most used Pokemon in BSS, Tangrowth does nothing to any of them. There aren't any redeeming qualities for it, hence it is useless here. My knowledge of OU is super limited these days so I can't comment on why it's good there, but I'd imagine it's used on stall/defensive teams. The BSS stall framework is basically set in stone at this point and Tangrowth doesn't fit anywhere in it.

S'up guys. So this is my first time posting here and I really need help figuring out the perfect team to go with mega venusaur and celesteela. I've tried it out with heatran, landorus-T, mimikyu, and gastrodon. It's worked out okay but not great. I managed to get around the mid 1600s on wifi with this team, but I know it is not the optimal team because this team struggles with a lot of the 1600-1700s-ish teams out there. So I would really appreciate feedback on this current team and what to change. Movesets:

The EVs on celesteela is to be able to handle download Porygon 2 and at the same time be able to handle most variants of mega salamence

Mimikyu in my opinion is a mon that can fit on most teams due to its disguise ability and unresisted dual typing, and it doesn't matter that this mon is predictable because it almost always puts in work against most teams. If it's not broken don't fix it. The EVs that I will display on my mimikyu might cause some controversy, but it has helped me multiple times before such as surviving mega lucario's bullet punch after life orb recoil or tapu lele's psychic after life orb recoil. I'm not sure if mimikyu is the best fit for this team.

I've put landorus T and Heatran on the team because I thought it worked well with mega venusaur and celesteela, but I got a feeling it's not the best thing for this team.
The Evs for landorus T is to make sure porygon 2 doesn't get the download boost and that I can outspeed base 130s after a speed drop from rock tomb.

Hi, I recognize this is yet another gimmick, but if I were to try and make a team with Mega Sableye in it, what teammates and approach would be the less bad way to go about it?

I recognize Mega Sabaleye's big trait of blocking hazards is not relevant in BSS, so would a stall team still not work? or could something like Calm Mind be (if only slightly) better here?

PKQ i like your team, it's already pretty balanced, and as you said it has a lot of anti-meta calls, but it seems a little weak to rain cores.

Maybe Tapu Bulu over Koko might help, still hitting Water-types while also mitigating your ground-type weakness if you don't want to bring Celesteela.

PKQ I don't see the point in using X-Scissor on Excadrill. It doesn't hit much that the other moves don't. I suggest you change it to Horn Drill, it is a nice desperation move to use in situations you would otherwise lose, or you could use Smart Strike to help your team against Minimize users and Glalie.

Bulu still does well vs Koko or bulky water-types though, so if you need it for these two it could work

Hello all, I'm looking for ways to improve this team. I'm not that great at building teams, I just threw together some mon to take on what is common out there right now. Its for battle spot singles. The stars are Ninetales and Gyarados, relying on ddance while protected by aurora veil. I do ok with it but feel I could use some help. Thanks!

I use blizzard because I found Ninetales rarely got the chance to use encore in BSS. It may seem redundant with freeze dry, but it does a good chunk of damage to a lot of things and has come in handy.

Hi dude, the team is pretty decent already even if it still looks like a prebank one.
At first glance i can say that Marowak, with Mimikyu as the ghost-type, Garchomp as the bolts absorber and an overall fast team, looks kinda out of place.

With those mons, and an Aurora Veil strategy i would try CharX over Marowak, putting Celesteela over Magnezone. You would still have those fire/steel types, while gaining another mega that works lovely behind the screens and a great dragon check, that gives you a pretty handy ground-immunity (and can work fine as well with an Assault Vest, if needed)


oh i forgot to say that imo Ninetails should run a bulkier spread, with 252 hp, since its main role is to set up Aurora veil. Also, adding Encore or Icy Wind over something could be a good idea

Sorry dude i missed your post, here we go:

Your team already has good cores in Venusaur/Mimikyu/Celesteela and Venu/Lando/Heatran. I would just switch out Gastrodon, as you've said too, that seems a little redundant with Venu, adding something to handle a little bit better Mega Gyarados, because a weakened Venusaur can't freely switch into a Mold Breaker Ice Fang or in an Earthquake, specially if you think that Gyarados can setup on Celesteela, Landorus and Heatran; and even more something for Mega Salamence, for the same reason.

Probably Suicune or Tapu Fini could fit here. This are two standard sets:

About the team, since your mega is not an offensive mega, Will-O-Wisp on Mimikyu could help it even further to take hits (for example landing it on Gyarados will almost totally solve your problems), also a Fairium-Z on it could help in checking either Gyarados and Salamence. I would also add Hidden Power Ice on Celesteela, maybe over protect, trasforming the set into a physically defensive one to wall physical Mega Salamence, that can easily take out either Venusaur and Heatran if the air balloon pops (i can totally see why you are using it with HP Ice though)
