CAP 13 CAP 2 - Part 4 - Stat Poll 1

Status
Not open for further replies.
This was a very difficult slate for me to determine. There were so many good submissions that I had to weigh many of them against each other and use their competitive logic to determine which I slated. There were also a lot of things that I changed my mind on. Walking into this stage, I was convinced that anything under 81 Speed was too slow and anything over 100 Speed was too fast. As you'll notice below, two slated spreads defy that, and it is through the logic presented that they make it here. Below I will explain the logic behind my slate so that you might know how I feel before you vote.

Recall that this poll operates on IRV voting, the details of which are outlined here. This means that you can upvote your favorite typing and downvote your least favorite. Be aware that order does matter in your votes! The first line is your favorite, the last line is your least favorite. Make sure you vote properly. Make sure that you bold your votes and nothing else! A typical vote might look like the following:
Most Preferred
Second Most Preferred
Least Preferred

Any comments that the voter has would go below the votes in non-bold text. Bold text is used to determine what the user's votes are, so none of the supplementary text should be in bold.
Please post only your votes in this thread. Do not respond to other posts, or your posts will be moderated and you warned. If you feel compelled to say something in your own vote, you may still do so, but don't try to incite a discussion. Keep discussion to #cap.

This poll will be open for 24 hours.

When voting, use only the author's name! The list of possible votes, in order of submission, are:
Deck Knight
reachzero
Korski
Spork
capefeather
Below is the logic for my slate.

The fast Speed spread was particularly difficult for me to swallow, but between a combined effort of Deck Knight and Aldaron, I've come to understand their point of view and the value therein. That said, I chose Deck Knight's spread over Aldaron's for competitive reasons even though I personally like Aldaron's a lot more. I think that Deck's defenses are better balanced to what CAP 2 needs (higher ST), and the higher PS enables more Sketch options through Choice Band and other such sets. Those two points are so clutch that I simply had to slate Deck's over Aldaron's.

reachzero's spread really attests to how important it is to have standardized checks and counters, and he convinced me fairly easily that underspeeding Heatran at the cost of underspeeding Dragonite is a legitimate strategy. He also has the highest slated Atk stat, which I feel goes a great way to enable non-boosting offensive Sketch coverage sets as viable alternatives to boosting sets.

capefeather's spread is perhaps in the ideal place for how I envisioned CAP 2. 81 Speed is wonderful because it just barely beats Dragonite, which is the breaking point for where I think CAP 2 is 'fast enough' to use a plethora of support moves effectively. It also enables offensive sets in a big way, as it's a boosting position that is well known by another famous 81 Speed Pokemon: Gyarados, a well-known bulky offense Pokemon. The other big seller here is the lower HP to Def/SpD, as this means that CAP 2 can achieve solid EV'd balanced bulk without splitting EVs too far. I think this is critical to CAP 2's success. The balance of offensive stats to defensive stats makes this an exceptionally solid choice for the CAP.

The other two spreads, Korski's and Spork's, are very good in their own rights, and balance slightly higher Speed stats than capefeather's against lower attacking stats. They also play to different strategies with the HP and Def/SpD stats, which gives them each their unique twist. As is usually the case with CAP stats, Speed is a major player, and the biggest selling points of these two spreads is that fewer EVs are needed in Speed to reach necessary benchmarks, allowing those EVs to go into either bulk or the offenses. That's a big point that isn't to be overlooked!

For those of you who didn't make it, don't fret! There is always another stage to play your talents in, and always new CAPs down the road to work toward. I want to thank you all for your hard work and great submissions. The harder a slate is to make, the better I feel the CAP will be as a result. Cheers.

Below are the original posts of the slated submissions.Good luck, and may the best spread win!

CAP 2 thus far:
Concept: Sketch Artist

Description: A Pokemon that learns Sketch, once, and everything that goes along with that.

Justification:

In terms of uniqueness, I think that few existing Pokemon can match DPP Smeargle, an otherwise laughably worthless Pokemon trolling OU with access to every trick in the book (or at least 4 of them) but also affecting the metagame greatly by becoming a top threat in the lead metagame. This Pokemon will borrow some of that uniqueness by learning the move Sketch and thus having access to ONE surprise/strategic/gutshot bonus move to supplement its pre-existing movepool. Being otherwise competently built (read: usable stats), this Poke could be a top threat or specialist for reasons we can't even predict yet.

Questions To Be Answered:
  • How will a Poke that has access to any one move out of all the moves in the game affect common battling tactics, namely prediction, scouting, and switching?
  • Which Sketch moves will become most common on this Poke's best sets? Does Sketchmon's success rely on hiding that secret Sketch move until just the right moment or can it succeed with predictably powerful moves like Spore, Spikes, Hurricane, Shell Smash, etc.?
  • Does this unique and powerful access to moves need to be counterbalanced elsewhere in the Pokemon's design? If so, then to what degree?
  • What kind of impact can Sketchmon have on teambuilding in terms of being able to patch holes with common utility moves like Rapid Spin or Toxic Spikes?
Explanation: The key here is that we have a lot of freedom to construct a unique Pokemon while staying within the confines of the concept. Typing, stats, abilities, and even most of the movepool are completely fair game so long as the Poke learns Sketch only once along the way and that we keep that in mind during previous steps. Now, this doesn't mean the CAP process will be directionless; Rising Dusk is pretty well organized and good at keeping discussions focused, and the concept itself has firm grounding in Smeargle's precedent. What's really being studied with this concept is movepool diversity and effectiveness, so it should have the most effect on the movepool process, where movepool creators will have to carefully balance their Sketchmon's actual movepool with the possibility of adding any one other move to the list. In terms of the metagame, there is no doubt in my mind that throwing a wildcard like this into the mix will strongly affect the metagame.
Focus: Bulky Offense
Typing: Grass / Ghost

tl;dr: Quack! (Blah! I vant to vote for stats!)

reachzero
capefeather
Spork
Korski

Deck Knight

I genuinely think that capefeather hit the nail on the head with the ideal Speed stat, the ideal blend of offenses and defenses, and the ideal structure such that as many Sketch options as possible are viable. That set is bulky enough to go defensive support and Sketch Spikes / Rapid Spin / etc., is strong enough physically to Sketch Sacred Fire and V-Create, is fast enough to favor boosting moves like Gear Shift and Quiver Dance, is specially competent enough to favor Tail Glow, and is all slow enough and weak enough physically to be taken care of by the desired Pokemon. I couldn't ask for more in a spread, and I hope that it carries all the way to the end.

Deck Knight

Pretty clear that Deck isn't going to win, but I will still vote for his spread. And only his spread. I used to be someone adamantly convinced CAP2 should have 81-84 speed. He and Aldaron changed my mind. And while I preferred Aldaron's, I will vote for Deck's.

Also... confused why Jibaku didn't make this.

Deck Knight
Korski
Spork
capefeather
reachzero

I'll be completely honest, I am not a huge fan of any of these spreads. However, despite my initial hesitations, I think the high speed of Deck Knight's spread would be the best choice for this Pokemon. While I personally prefer the 81 speed of capefeather, I do not think having such a high Attack stat would be healthy for it, and in my opinion, a fast but weaker Pokemon is the next best thing.

Deck Knight
Korski

I like the lack of huge offense to it. I feel they may be a bit low even (i look at Nidoking for what i'd figure this mons hould be like) and i dont mind Korski's set either, slightly better offenses works imo.

What I am most interested in is unlocking the true offensive potential of this CAP by ensuring no move it can Sketch will be a terrible one. Deck Knight's spread was nigh-perfect, but the low Special Attack does not sell me, since it locks off his entire special spectrum from him. Capefeather's spread drives the point home in that what this CAP should be doing is killing things, and to compensate for his terrible STAB options, his stats should at least suggest that he would be very good at it. With it also being able to switch in on Politoed safely (a benchmark for good Grass-types in the OU meta) this CAP is going to be all around extremely useful, utility being another big thing we should keep in mind for the Pokemon we're trying to create.
