NEW: This is a Celebration CAP, meaning that we are going out of our way to break some rules. We'll be creating a set of three Pokemon this time around, a set of Fire, Water, and Grass-type starters! You can read exactly which rules we'll be breaking here and the logic behind Celebration CAPs here. Give these a read-through to get some context.

-----

Legal Pokedex submissions must meet the following standards
  • Pokedex Entries must have flawless grammar. Smogon has a Grammar & Prose team that will help identify mistakes.
  • Pokedex Entries cannot be longer than 32 words.
  • Pokedex Entries can only contain the following characters:
    • Letters A-Z
    • Numbers 0-9
    • Dash (-)
    • Apostrophe (')
    • Double quote (")
    • Period (.)
    • Comma (,)
    • Colon (:)
    • Semi-colon (;)
    • Space

Work In Progress (WIP) Pokedex Entries can be posted at any time for comments from the community.

No more than three WIP Pokedex Entries can be posted by any individual person through the entire course of the submission thread. This limit applies to ALL posts made by a single person, even if previous posts are edited or deleted. This limit is intended to curb the tendency for some submitters to spam the thread repeatedly with multiple Pokedex Entries. This detracts from other submissions and makes it difficult for commenters to survey the submission thread.

Do not bump your WIP Pokedex Entries by posting them repeatedly, or making minor wording changes. Bumping will result in the disqualification of all Pokedex Entries by the offender. Editing or deleting bump posts will not prevent disqualification.

Only ONE Final Submission can be made per person.

Pokedex Entry Final Submissions can only be posted after a CAP Moderator posts in the thread that final submissions are open. Any final submission posted prior to the Moderator notification post, will disqualify the submitter from the poll entirely. Even if the offending post is edited later or deleted, the submitter will still be disqualified for the remainder of the thread. This ensures that all submitters have equal opportunity to post final submissions without anyone unfairly "jumping the gun".

Pokedex entries Final Submissions must posted exactly in the following format and in the following exact order:
  • The first line of the post must have the words "Final Submission" in bold on it's own line. No other text may be included before the bold heading.
  • A blank line
  • "<Pokemon Name>, the <Species Name> Pokemon", with the Pokemon name and the Species Name in bold
  • A blank line
  • The Sun Pokedex Entry submission. Start with the letters "Sun" in bold, then a colon (:), and then the Pokedex entry.
  • A blank line
  • The Moon Pokedex Entry submission. Start with the letters "Moon" in bold, then a colon (:), and then the Pokedex entry.
  • A blank line
  • The Ultra Sun Pokedex Entry submission. Start with the letters "Ultra Sun" in bold, then a colon (:), and then the Pokedex entry.
  • A blank line
  • The Ultra Moon Pokedex Entry submission. Start with the letters "Ultra Moon" in bold, then a colon (:), and then the Pokedex entry.
Below the Final Submission you can post other comments, explanations, etc.

Example final submission:

Final Submission

Magearna, the Artificial Pokémon

Sun: This artificial Pokémon, constructed more than 500 years ago, can understand human speech but cannot itself speak.

Moon: Its mechanized body is merely a vessel. Its true self is its Soul-Heart, an artificial soul.

Ultra Sun: It synchronizes its consciousness with others to understand their feelings. This faculty makes it useful for taking care of people.

Ultra Moon: Built roughly 500 years ago by a scientist, the part called the Soul-Heart is the actual life-form.
Any Final Submission that does not follow the proper format will be disqualified.

CAP 25 so far:

Topic Leader: reachzero

Topic Leadership Team:
EpicUmbreon29 - Typing
snake_rattler - Ability
jas61292 - Stats
cbrevan - Movepool

Name: Starter Trio CAPs

Description: This CAP is not one Pokemon, but three seperate Pokemon, based off of a Grass/Water/Fire starter trio.

Explanation: There is rarely such thing as a competitively viable starter Pokemon in the OU metagame, rare exceptions being Serperior, Greninja, and Blaziken for their insanely powerful abilities, and Infernape for his speed and movepool. Running three seperate CAP Processes with different Concepts can be loads of fun, and a nice way to celebrate CAP with our own starter trio! I'd love to see what the artists can come up with, and what pre-evos will be made alongside this trio, as well.
I've spoken to Birkal about this framework, and I've decided that this framework would definitely limit the Typing stage of each CAP, but not necessarily limit the Abilities stages, as Overgrow, Torrent, and Blaze aren't very competitively viable, and not necessarily limit the Stats stages, as starter trios tend not to share the same BSTs, giving us flexibility with where and how we want to place stats, especially with each "starter" most likely having a different concept from the others.

Possible Questions:
Is it possible to create a fully competitively viable Grass/Water/Fire trio?
What can be learned from a trio of Pokemon that will mostly likely check, if not counter, each other in a Rock Paper Scissors manner?
Exactly what does it take to create a fully competitively viable starter trio, something unprecedented in all of official, competitive Pokemon?

Of course, feedback is all but begged for as we work to flesh out this framework!

Starter Fact Sheet

Final Submission
  • Name - Astounding Ability Actualization (Triple A)
  • Description - These Pokemon each maximize the potential of their given, separate abilities by coordinating their movepools and that ability's competitive effect.
  • Justification - This is an Actualization concept much like Cyclohm's original "Neglected Ability." In my research on what made Pokemon with "Starter Level" stats effective, the common denominator was they all had abilities they used to full effect with their other competitive aspects. This framework gives us a unique opportunity to A-B test some fairly powerful abilities we usually shy away from and bring out an effective competitive starter trio.
  • Questions To Be Answered -
    • Which Abilities are best suited to a full, comprehensive exploration of their specific mechanics?
    • Why does Ability seem to be the common factor in taking "starter-esque" Pokemon into prominence (e.g. Protean and Battle Bond Greninja, Contrary Serperior, Speed Boost Blaziken to Ubers, etc.)
    • What is the threshold where maximizing an ability goes toi far, such as Blaziken's combination of Swords Dance, strong attack and mid-grade speed, and high BP STABS with Speed Boost or Protean Greninja's huge speed and just-varied enough movepool in prior Generations?
    • How will introducing three specialized Pokemon into the metagame at once impact it overall?
    • Which type combinations along with the starter types are best suited to maximizing the potential of a specific ability, and why?
  • Explanation - Competitive Pokemon has suffered from a massive power creep for a long time. In order for a Pokemon to be effective, not only does it have to be fairly good generally, it also can't be directly outclassed. Considering our Framework, our Pokemon are already competing against Heatran/Volcarona, Toxapex/Keldeo/Greninja, and Ferrothorn/Kartana for offensive or defensive roles. However, each of those Pokemon have their own flaws that give our FWG CAP Trio space to explore if we are focused on a key niche for each of them.

Let's take Grass for example, and Tough Claws. Tough Claws boosts one of the most incredibly CAP-relevant moves, Grass Knot, because it is a special contact attack. Only Mega Metagross ever even came close to utilizing this combination, and Mega-Meta was banned (for other reasons, of course). Grass could also use it's huge number of healing options with Triage, including priority Strength Sap that even outruns Bullet Punch. Nearly every Fire attack has a secondary effect chance perfect for Serene Grace or Sheer Force. Water has a few specific moves that would also love Serene Grace, but would also appreciate breaking through Gastrodon and Mollux with Mold Breaker. Suffice it to say, this concept gives us an ability to meet our Framework demands and think through a huge combination of synergistic types and abilities in a single project.

Smokomodo, the Chameleon Pokémon

Sun: It can communicate to others by changing its colors, such as it turning red or yellow when angry or pale gray when it gives up.

Moon: It often trains for battles by fighting other Pokémon in the area and when it is not fighting it will go near a hot area and look over its territory.

Ultra Sun: Shop keepers use these Pokémon as shopping clerks, when someone steals an item from the shop it will alert all Smokomodos and Kecleon in the area to maul the thief.

Ultra Moon: These Pokémon have powerful eyes that can lock onto prey or opponent, they can also move them independently at will.

Smokomodo, the Geyser Pokémon

Sun: It makes its home deep in volcanic craters. It can go for days without sunlight using the heat from the earth around it for energy instead.

Moon: Smokomodo are fiercely territorial. They spit fire as a warning, before using their sharp claws and horns to pummel intruders.

Ultra Sun: Its three fingers are surprisingly dexterous. It is able to use its sharp claws to solve puzzles without breaking them, stumping scientists.

Ultra Moon: The gas that Smokomodo expel from their backs is affected by the quality of the air around them. They are more dangerous in their natural volcanic habitats for this reason.

I wanted to focus on a few aspects of its personality, namely its strong physical presence, as well as the smoke constantly streaming from its back. I mention its habitat to draw attention to its typing.

WIP

Smokomodo, the Volcanic Lizard Pokemon

Sun: In battle, it conceals itself within the smoke that pours out of its back. Its eyes have developed a resistance to irritation, which allows it to use this strategy effectively.

Moon: Smokomodo has been seen to have the capability to change its skin color to match its environment. It uses this to hide from potential prey.

Ultra Sun: Smokomodo live in areas with high volcanic activity. The smoky air gives them more cover to stalk prey from, and they can easily climb over rocky surfaces to chase prey down.

Ultra Moon: Wild Smokomodo cloud the area they sleep in with extremely hot smoke. It burns to touch, and makes it tough to breath, but Smokomodo are unaffected by it.

WIP

Smokomodo, the Steaming Pokemon.

Sun: The smoke that this Pokemon excretes is said to change color slightly based on how healthy the Smokomodo is.

Moon: The smoke that this Pokémon excretes is incredibly hazardous to one’s health. Even one breath can cause several lung issues.

Ultra Sun: If a Smokomodo feels threatened, it will shroud itself in smoke before running away.

Ultra Moon: Smokomodo’s smoke has a special irritant in it that causes burning in the lungs and eyes. This is incredibly effective against enemies or poachers.

WIP

Smokomodo, the Pyroclastic Flow Pokémon

Sun: The amount of lava Smokomodo releases is so overwhelming, it'll often dry over its body and create a metallic thread around its limbs. Such thread is somehow related to Alolan Dugtrio's hair.

Moon: Wrestling competitions are common among this Pokémon, especially during mating season. Smokomodo will often be thrown awkwardly and have their leg broken.

Ultra Sun: They're very moody Pokémon. The colors of their lava will change depending on how they're feeling--an enraged Smokomodo will heat up its lava so much it'll become purple.

Ultra Moon: They will blend in with the scorched earth near active volcanoes, waiting to catch their prey with a deadly grip. After the feast, they'll often use the bones as toys--or weapons.

I'll leave here the flavour explanation for each dex entry.
The Sun entry references the Pele's Hair, which are volcanic glass fibers that were used as reference for Alolan Dugtrio's design. Pele's Hair are usually originated from lava fountains or vigorous lava flows and are found near volcanoes all around the globe, specially in the Hawaii (which is where Alola region is based off of). It gave this entry a nice real life, geologically-accurate vibe, which I quite happen to like. It also references the fact that Smokomodo's movepool has a bunch of Steel-type moves via level up.
For Moon, I decided to take inspiration from the fact that komodo dragons often wrestle! It references Smokomodo's Fighting-type flavour in the movepool stage as well. Again, another reaal life-accurate vibe.
For Ultra Sun, I wanted to give Smokomodo some personality. I decided to make it a moody pokémon that changes the colors of it's lava depending on their feelings. There's also a cool easter egg with the lava heating so much it becomes purple - Magcargo's shiny version is purple -and, hypothetically, when lava gets overwhelmingly heated up, it would become, guess what, purple.
For Ultra Moon, I wanted to give it a more dark tone as well as reference Bone Rush (yes, the controversial Bone Rush). Some people said there wasn't reasoning enough for Bone Rush to be added as a flavour move in the earlier movepool stage, so I decided to maybe give it a reason! Also, komodo dragons are known to stalk their prey and, occasionally, also act as scavengers - which also gives that nice, real life-accurate vibe.

Let the big boys through

WIP

Smokomodo, the Volcanic Lizard Pokemon

Sun: Smokomodo's mood is as unpredictable as a volcano! If angered, it will rapidly change its colours and quite literally blow its top!

Moon: The smoke expelled from Smokomodo's back is an indicator of its vitality. Thick black smoke means its either ill, or starving, while white smoke means its healthy.

Ultra Sun: A pair will chase prey to a clearing, where another lies in wait. The hidden Smokomodo then expels clouds of noxious gas that knock the prey out. They then commence feeding.

Ultra Moon: Smokomodo are clever and cunning Pokémon. They use their dexterous tail and claws to perform a variety of complex tasks.

WIP

Smokomodo, the Crafty Pokemon

Sun: Smokomodo hate losing and will often do whatever they can to win a fight. They love using unusual strategies to achieve victory.

Moon: Smokomodo commonly live in giant groups within dormant volcanos. If you see smoke coming out of a long inactive volcano, its likely a group of Smokomodo are restless.

Ultra Sun: Smokomodo's eyes can see through any fog or smoke. They're commonly used by firefighters to rescue people trapped by fires through thick smoke.

Ultra Moon: Smokomodo can control the amount of smoke it releases, and where it goes. It commonly releases high amounts of smoke in battle.

Smokomodo the Volcanic Ash Pokémon.

Sun: When it feels threatened, Smokomodo will release noxious fumes at its opponent, causing them to be temporarily blind.

Moon: The horn on their head is very sharp, being able to dent or even cut through solid steel. If they charge, they're able to cut through thick plates of titanium.

Ultra Sun: They make their nests near volcanoes and will only leave it to go hunt for food or when breeding season arrives. Despite it's intimidating look, it only eats berries and fruits.

Ultra Moon: It can often be found dueling with Torkoal in who can produce the most smoke, however after a minute the area's
so covered in smoke, that they both agree it's a tie.

Smokomodo the Volcano Pokémon.

Sun: The volcanoes on a Smokomodo's back react directly to its current moods. When in battle, their battle spirit literally fuels the power of their magma-based attacks.

Moon: Every volcano is home to a single Smokomodo clan, which provide them with all the necessities for living. When their volcano dies, so do their chance at survival.

Ultra Sun: Smokomodo have camouflage that are perfectly suited to rocky environments. When prey draws near they quickly spew a sticky shot of magma that binds to skin, slowing their target down.

Ultra Moon: The plating on a Smokomodo's body are resistant to many attacks, but are notoriously weak to water. A small few drops of water can create cracks in their armor.

Smokomodo, the Volcanic Lizard Pokémon.

Sun: For reasons not fully understood, Smokomodo have a tendency to gather and bring back various types of bone to adorn and decorate their nests with.

Moon: Although Smokomodo have a very unpredictable temperament, it is possible to discern their mood by observing the consistency and color of the smoke they emit.

Ultra Sun: Smokomodo covet the powerful bones Alolan Marowak use to perform their dances and attacks with, often leading to a brutal battle between the two for ownership of said bone.

Ultra Moon: Smokomodo require constant attention to raise properly. It is easy to tell when a Smokomodo is raised poorly by the color and quality of the smoke ejected from its back.

Smokomodo, the Pyroclastic Pokémon

Sun: Magma courses through its entire body. It emits smoke from its back to help regulate body temperature.

Moon
: Beneath its stubborn facade is a clever and crafty Pokémon. Hiding within a cloud of smog, it adeptly uses its limbs and long tail to subdue prey.

Ultra Sun: It nests in caverns deep within active volcanoes. By using the vents on its back to propel itself, Smokomodo can quickly traverse the craggy terrain to seek out new territory.

Ultra Moon
: The veins on its body change color based on its mood. Bright red is a sign of hostility, while a flickering yellow signals trust to its Trainer.

Smokomodo, the Molten Flow Pokémon

Sun: Smokomodo usually live near volcanos, where their camouflage allows them to sneak up on prey. The smoke they produce helps in the disguise.

Moon: Smokomodo are said to be distant relatives of the Legendary Pokémon Groudon. They naturally oppose Water Pokémon that approach their territory.

Ultra Sun: There is a rumor that long ago a group of Kecleon were once trapped on a volcanic island by a massive wave. They eventually adapted to their environment, becoming the first Smokomodo.

Ultra Moon: Smokomodo can sometimes be seen drinking from lava flows. They use the lava they consume as both natural camouflage and fuel for their fire attacks.

WIP

Smokomodo, the Explosive Pokemon

Sun: It hides behind smokescreens, then strikes abruptly when prey draw near. Smokomodo can manipulate the color of its smoke to blend into almost any terrain.

Moon: Arrogant and violent, Smokomodo will blast flammable gases at those it deems weak. Rookie trainers are advised to avoid raising this Pokemon.

Ultra Sun: Smokomodo holds the bones of small prey in its gullet to aid its digestion. When fighting large opponents, Smokomodo will shift bone fragments into its mouth and deliver devastating biting attacks.

Ultra Moon: By producing minor eruptions from the vents along its back, Smokomodo can achieve tremendous bursts of speed. When combined with a jump, this allows Smokomodo to catch Delibird flying overhead.

Smokomodo, the Monitor Pokemon

Sun: If trapped, Smokomodo can disconnect their tail from their body. Tails dropped this way become as hard as bone, and regrow within 30 minutes!

Moon: This Pokemon's eggs require a massive source of heat to hatch. Smokomodo often place eggs where they expect lava to flow from volcanoes.

Ultra Sun: Since its eyes have 360-degree vision, Smokomodo are difficult to surprise. When they are startled, Smokomodo will angrily release a plume of pungent smoke.

Ultra Moon: In an attempt to forecast volcanic eruptions from their egg laying habits, Lavaridge Town once imported several wild Smokomodo. However, these Smokomodo instead laid their eggs in the Lavaridge Hot Springs.

WIP

Smokomodo, the Lava Vent Pokémon

Sun: This Pokémon can completely blend in with the surrounding terrain. When prey get within range of its fireballs, it roasts them alive.

Moon: Smokomodo can use the pressurized gas it builds up inside of its body for propulsion. It uses this trait to deliver powerful slashes to their foes.

Ultra Sun: The gas inside this Pokémon's body is extremely toxic. When in a pinch, it releases a huge stack of smoke and quickly hides among the terrain.

Ultra Moon: Smokomodo is extremely accurate when spitting balls of fire. It can even match the most skilled snipers in accuracy.

WIP

Smokomodo, the Volcano Pokémon

Sun: Smokomodo are hot-tempered Pokémon that tend to live alone. They specialize in taking down prey like Magcargo due to their resistance to extreme heat.

Moon: Smokomodo is feared in some exotic tribes due to its ability to unleash a geyser of lava equivalent in power to a volcanic eruption at will.

Ultra Sun: Despite being a starter Pokémon, Smokomodo is not a good choice for a novice trainer due to their independent streak. Trainers that embrace this trait have an unquestionably faithful ally.

Ultra Moon: The smoke Smokomodo emits is easily able to knock out Pokémon like Talonflame, which helps make Smokomodo the dominant predator in its volcanic environment.

Smokomodo, the Crafty Pokemon

Sun: Smokomodo hate losing and will often do whatever they can to win a fight. They love using unusual strategies to achieve victory.

Moon: Smokomodo commonly live in colonies within dormant volcanoes. If you see smoke coming out of a dormant volcano, it's likely two colonies of Smokomodo are fighting over territory.

Ultra Sun: Smokomodo's eyes can see through any fog or smoke. They're commonly used by firefighters to rescue people trapped in burning buildings.

Ultra Moon: Smokomodo can control the amount of smoke it releases and where it goes. It releases high amounts of smoke in battle.

Crafty: Its ability is Technician. Rather crafty and tactical pokemon.
Sun: Smokomodo struck me as the salty type who hates losing. Along with this, technician as its ability allows for unusual strategies: Such as using low-powered moves.
Moon: I was given suggestions to make an entry based around Smokomodo's territory. While I believe some went for the active volcano route (i was too lazy to read oops--) I decided to go for the dormant volcano group. It also just felt natural to have them all together in one giant group inside such a big volcano.
Ultra Sun: If Smokomodo is using so much smoke in battle, it makes sense for it to see through it, yeah? It felt lacking with just that though, so I added the bit about firefighters considering it made sense. And the fun little irony of firefighters using a fire type...
Ultra Moon: If you couldn't tell from the Ultra Sun entry and part of Moons, I like their smoke. As such a crafty, tactical pokemon, it'd make sense for it to be fairly in control of its power of smoke, right?

sorry for stealing your flavor explanation thing ifeedback--

Smokomodo, my baby, I had to go all out for dex entries.

Sun's entry deals with how ill tempered Smokomodo is, and that it can be quite an explosive Pokemon once its mood sours.

Moon deals with Smokomodo's signature smoke, and directly ties itself to its level up movepool, by showing how its health deals with how it expells smoke.

US goes fully dark, dealing with feeding habits and how it hunts its prey with its smoke and cunning nature.

UM sheds light on said cunning nature, slightly referencing Technician in the mix.

For Ultra Sun I also decided to play homage to its hidden ability of Technician. I mentioned its habitat a few times, and specifically that it lives underground to draw attention to its dual typing. In addition, volcanic craters are mentioned in other pokedex entries a few times (particularly Magmortar's). I settled on the Geyser Pokemon for its species based on its habitat, and the spikes on its back that mimic volcanic geysers.

Smokomodo's personality is a bit difficult to... wrestle with! Sort of like a Smokomodo in general. I've focussed more on habits and biology - though Smokomodo by my dex entries are irritable, like to think they're all knowing, and if given a task do not neccessarily follow through with it. I suppose that makes them... teenagers!

Monitor Pokemon because of Monitor Lizards, which include Komodo Dragons.

In Sun, I wanted to deal with an elelphant in the room - Bone Rush. I think that flavour-wise the move is... yeah... so I've given it a dex entry that tries to reconcile that one up, whilst also emphasising Smokomodo as a lizard, with the ability to drop it's tail, and have a bone-like appendage to whack an opponent with.

On Moon, I enjoy how when Dex entries refer to matters such as life cycles and habitats, and I wanted a trait I could build on later. It also makes good sense that Smokomodo would lay their eggs in such a way as to provide the heat they need.

Hopping across to Ultra Sun, I wanted to give Smokomodo a bit more personality - they're wary and fluster easily. I liked the idea of emphasising Smokomodo's poisonous abilities through the move Smog here, and a more general reminder that we are looking at a volcano lizard.

Finally, I wanted Ultra Moon to carry on from the Moon entry, this time by placing them in a habitat where they wouldn't be native - in this case, Hoenn's Lavaridge Town. This gives the general feel of Smokomodo living in the wild, and the fact that they promptly ignored what the people of Lavaridge wanted them to do (tell them when Mt. Chimney was going to erupt) gave me an opportunity to add a bit of humour to the set.
