CAP 31 So Far

-----

Here are the explanations Wulfanator, our Section Leader for this stage, has provided for each of the options. In addition, please refer to the Stats Submission thread here to make an educated decision when submitting your ballot!

Zetalz 70/120/105/65/130/90
Defining Moves: Swords Dance, Power Whip, 50% Recovery, Pain Split, Taunt

While the spread is similar in structure to what Voltage has achieved (more on that later), there are a few elements of this spread that may be more desirable to voters. The first thing of note is the speed tier. Given the consideration of grass-coverage and our ability, the speed tier helps 31 better target bulky water-types such as Tapu Fini and makes this move inclusion a more desirable choice. The slightly better physical tankiness helps ensure a better matchup into Zeraora by avoiding a roll for 2hko. The general focus on bulk and the consideration of Swords Dance also allows for more customizable EV investment.

dex 110/147/75/60/80/83
Defining Moves: Power Whip, 50% Recovery, Taunt, Rapid Spin

The spread shares a similar structure to Excadrill, but the attack and bulk is far more generous. On initial viewing, I was not sold on the bulk the spread had to offer. I was not expecting the damage roles to be very favorable, but the calcs provided indicate otherwise. Recovery should also reinforce the bulk element of the spread if it maintains it. The lack of consideration for setup makes the strong attack stat necessary to stay competitive with the other relevant ground types in the tier. The combination of promising bulk and monstrous attack helps alleviate the responsibility of speed towards 31’s success. It can operate at a lower speed tier than expected while still being threatening.

DetroitLolcat 75/150/120/65/110/65
Defining Moves: Pain Split, Taunt

With both the slowest speed and strongest attack on slate, DLC’s submission is the best 252 Adamant spread to consider. The spread has great bulk with the ability to further invest which will make this a difficult spread to take on. The lack of consideration for setup and 50% recovery was a good call since I am unsure either would make it through the reevaluation of defining moves. Pain Split as a recovery alternative may or may not make it through the reevaluation, so be aware of that when considering this spread. The immediate power this spread offers is hard to pass up though.

Amamama 80/113/122/53/86/126
Defining Moves: Taunt, Power Whip, Overheat

With max speed and one of the best physical bulks, this spread was considered for slate very early on. With the higher speed tier, 31 is far more threatening to mons like Weavile and Astrolotl. Even with a rather weak special attacking stat, fire coverage seems more reasonable given the ability to outspeed certain Kartana variants. Considering speed paired with potential defensive boosts from Diamond Storm, having a guaranteed “weakness” in special defense will make balancing easier. This spread is also the most likely to see heavy reevaluation in moveset discussion given the lesser attack stat, so there may be more flexibility granted to it compared to all other spreads on slate.

Da Pizza Man 132/135/86/53/66/79
Defining Moves: Dragon Dance, Power Whip

There were many 132 hp spreads to consider this time around and being able to define a unique niche compared to the others was a difficult task. Given the slower speed tier, Dragon Dance was a smart inclusion to set itself apart. Pairing the defensive benchmark versus Landorus-T at +2 def with a base hp that is already trying to encourage substitute seems like a strong combination, especially when you consider that Landorus-T would be used to impede the progress of us setting up Dragon Dance. These are very specific interactions, but I think it works well for what the spread is trying to achieve.

Voltage 132/125/61/55/95/82
Defining Moves: Swords Dance, 50% Recovery, Wood Hammer, Special Fire coverage, Pain Split, Thunder Wave

Of all the spreads that have a heavy focus on special bulk, Voltage’s does it best. The ability to absorb relevant hits comfortably without investment means we will be able to focus on our offensive capabilities and not be sacrificing for it. While the application for the 101 hp substitutes is niche at best, having additional uses for the 31 is generally a positive. Given the speed tier, recovery will be a necessary tool and make the special bulk element of the spread go much further. Swords Dance also seems like a necessary consideration to better enable our two-move coverage. The mix of traits made this an easy contender for slate.

mark6870 96/127/105/45/82/87
Defining Moves: 50% Recovery, Taunt, Dragon Dance

I think this is potentially the strongest Dragon Dance spread. The speed tier can threaten mons like Tapu Fini and Modest Tapu Lele before the boost and proceeds to out speed all desirable targets at +1. The consideration for recovery alongside setup makes an item choice like Life Orb more compelling and further increases the potency of our two-move coverage. Having a weaker special defense on this spread seems like a needed balancing factor but it still manages to have the flexibility to switch into something like Tapu Koko Dazzling Gleam with relative ease.

Darek 90/120/75/52/125/88
Defining Moves: Shift Gear, 50% Recovery

Having the only Shift Gear spread is an easy way to be a contender for slate. When +2 speed allows 31 to outpace almost the entire tier, speed stops being overly relevant. The spread has a Necrozma feel to it given the strong mix of bulk and setup. The attack stat is rather tame and I think pairs nicely with what could have potentially been a very volatile move. This is still a difficult spread to gauge how strong it ends up being, but I am comfortable seeing how this preforms and making necessary adjustments in post-play lookback.

This will be a Ranked Pairs vote (RP) (a form of voting where each candidate is ranked according to head to head matchups with each of its competitors in a directed acyclic graph), the details of which were discussed here.

This is a ranked vote: order does matter! You can upvote your favorites and downvote your least favorites. You may choose to rank as many or as few options as you like, but we encourage you to rank as many options as possible to ensure your preferences are taken into account.

Bold your votes and nothing else!
A typical vote might look like the following:
Most Preferred
Second Most Preferred
Third Most Preferred

Any comments that the voter has would go below the votes in non-bold text. Bold text is used to determine what the user's votes are, so none of the supplementary text should be in bold.
CAP uses automated scripts to count votes. For this reason, it is very important for all ballots to be submitted correctly. If you do not compose a legal ballot, your post will be subject to moderation.
  • The scripts count bold words in ballots, so do NOT bold anything in your ballot other than the options you are voting for.
  • Do NOT put any formatting other than bold in your post.
  • Only one option per line.
  • The spelling of options must be EXACTLY correct and must match the spelling listed above.
  • Capitalization and spaces are ignored by the vote counting scripts, but you probably should not depend on it.
Composing a proper ballot is easy. Enter BBCode Edit Mode (the A in the upper right corner). Copy/paste the options directly from the OP to your ballot as plain unbolded text. Delete and/or rearrange the options to suit your preference and the poll type. Bold your vote text using bold tags or re-enter rich text mode, highlight your vote and click B. Spelling or formatting errors may spoil your ballot, so be careful!

CAP uses blind voting. Other people's votes won't appear in the thread, but they are counted and will be made visible at the end of the voting timeframe. For more information about this change, check out this PRC thread.

Asking for votes for your submission or for the submissions of others is not allowed. Anyone found to have done so risks punishment at the moderation team's discretion. If you find that someone has broken this rule, please contact the CAP moderation team with your evidence and no one else. Mini-moderation of this rule is also considered a serious offense and can be punished.
