Cartoons those are some pretty awesome backsprites! I was worried that i'd get bored staring at the back of my CAP6's head but you've made them really interesting so cheers!

DJD all round great sprites and your seaweed green shiny shivers my timbers :-P

Torn between Doug's and Cartoons'. Both are neat, bulky and ready to destroy the CAP metagame. Everyone did a great job though, great work guys!

Thanks for all your comments and critiques, guys.

I fixed the color limit problem, and worked on the eye like you suggested, Naxte. Also, I appreciate the offer, Wichu, but this has been a great learning experience so far, and I'd like to see if I could work through all the problems myself. Perhaps you could give me an example of a bad line so I would know what to look out for?

Also, Doug, I love those oldschool boxer types (I have a whole Muybridge book full of 'em), but I agree with the others that the sprite with the right arm raised makes for a better picture.
A minor nitpick, but perhaps you could try turning his right glove inward like the other one? It's currently almost a face-on perspective so the knuckles would still be mostly pointing outwards. Other than that, it's a great sprite, and I admire how you were able to keep the proportions within that 80x80 box.

Interesting that you mentioned this Caelum. In my sprite, the fighter's lead hand (the hand on the left side of the picture) is low and extended, and the other hand is cocked more close to the body. I actually put the hands in that position intentionally. But, maybe it isn't working the way I intended. Let me explain...

Since this is a pirate, I was thinking that this boxer would box in "old-timey style" -- kind of like in the 1880's -1890's during the heyday of boxers like John L. Sullivan and Gentleman Jim Corbett, when boxing gloves first started being used. In those days, boxers held their hands lower. Here's a picture to see what I'm talking about:

Perhaps my homage to that fighting style is a little too obscure for an 80X80 pixel Pokemon sprite...

In modern boxing, the "jabbing" hand should be out AND up. Since the hand on the left was already stretched out a little more than the one on the right, I experimented with raising the lead hand up a little. Here's the old and new sprites side-by-side for comparison:

Personally, I still like the "old-timey" boxing pose. But, I don't have my heart set on it, and if people prefer the "modern" pose, I'll go with it. What do you think?

Ah, I see where you were originally coming from, interesting. My personal preference is the "new" one since I think the references you are invoking in the older sprite are missed by the intended audience and it's harder to detect in a small sprite like that. Maybe if the sprite was larger the reference would be easier to detect but I think in such a small size it isn't easy to pick up on. I like the newer one also because it looks more like it is "on the offensive". Whichever sprite you ultimately choose to submit for the poll I'm cool with though since I think they are both great.

BTW, I like your choice of color scheme for the shiny version.

Thanks for all your comments and critiques, guys.

The boxing glove tentacle at our left's outline doesn't look quite smooth. Also, the transition between tentacle and glove looks square.

And I hope you don't mind, but I edited your sprite anyway. Sorry! But should I post it? I could PM it to you if you prefer...

EDIT: Wyverii, I just noticed that your male and female sprites have the eye on opposite sides. That's a nice touch.

Wyverii, on the backsprites I would like to point out that the sword has no sharp-sword appeal what-so-ever. The tip is rounded, can you make it a bit more of an angle (90 degrees preferably, or well the vertex of one...).

Err, Sikh Assassin? You can't even see the tip. The tip's behind the face following the natural curve and perspective of the sword. If that bothers you I can reposition the sword completely.

Well its not really bothering me, it just seemed that the sword had a round tip since the lines showed it meet. It's fine now that I rechecked it...

I really like chaoscriptler's front pose but cartoons back-pose is amazingly precise and beautiful. I'm torn between those two.

Doug for some reason, your sprite looks way to "plastic" to be a pokemon. But that's just me.

I'll vote for whoever makes a moving sprite, a la Syclant's. None of the newer CAPs have the animation, so I'll vote for whoever can do it this time.

Chaoscrippler, your sprite is really excellent. It is probably the neatest one I've seen so far. I really like your male/female differences too - the notch in the cutlass is really really cool. Only one small criticism is that the divide between the front two leg tentacles is a very apparent solid vertical line, which sort of detracts from the natural feel of the sprite. Perhaps make it not so vertical, or make it a lighter shade than solid black, and your sprite will be even better.

Much better =). Wow that was a fast response to criticism. I'll say it again lol I really really like your sprites.

Possible shiny?

Wichu, I certainly don't mind you posting your edit, although I'd only use it as reference. I really appreciate you taking the time, by the way.

I tweaked my front sprites just a little, since my last change made the raised front hand look more like an "arm" and less like a "tentacle". By smoothing the curves and lowering it just a little, I restored the "tentacle-ness".

And, after a lot of misfires, I think I've settled on my back sprite pose.

As always, comments are welcome...

I like Doug's front sprite, especially with the fists at different levels. The shiny colors are okay; I don't really like the purple. I prefer Chaoscrippler's shiny colors. The backsprite is good sprite work, but the hat looks like a cowboy hat. Also, the fists are a little too close the face, so it looks like they form part of a nose -_-. It is good spriting though!

Is the 31st a good day to end submissions for you spriters, or is that not enough time to fine-tune your sprites? I don't mind either way.

I still haven't finished my front sprite. (working really hard on it!) For me, I can finish all of the sprites I guess at Saturday. Here's how it looks so far:

I'm still working on the shading and I'm not so happy with how the head and the legs look. Feel free to comment and advise me on how to make it better. I'd really like to have some suggestions/comments
