CAP 6 CAP 6 - Part 15 - Sprite Submissions

I think a gold recolouring of the shiny would be really cool. I'm not a very good spriter but I like to think I have a good taste for art. If the 'hat' and gloves were made a dark shade of black, and its mustache, eyebrows, beard, cutlass and hook a nice golden colour, I think it would be very eye catching.

Here's an update to my sprite. Along with a shiny coloring.

Based on Griffin's suggestion, I smoothed out the transition on the sword tentacle. I also reduced the use of black in some of the outlines.

I agree that my pose is not as action-packed as some of the others, but I was really trying to go for a clean rendition of all the elements of Aragornbird's design. In particular, I tried to stay faithful to the overall proportions of the design. I think Abird's design has a wonderful combination of both "long" and "bulky", so I really wanted to transfer those two themes into the sprite. I tried a few other action-oriented poses, but I couldn't pull them off in an 80X80 square without compromising the proportions of the design. So, I opted for a "ready stance" and tried to focus on details and shading.

As for the shiny, I decided to go with black for the hat, since most classic pirate hats are black. I'm using red for the gloves and face, because red "feels" like Fighting-type to me. I used gold for the "cutlery", because gold is a cool color for metal, and gold accents add a lot of "pop" to the shiny. I tried out many shiny skin colors, but I'm currently going with purple. I prefer the purple shiny for a couple of reasons.
1) I'm a total fanboy for all the purple water shinies in the real game (Lanturn, Blastoise, Vappy, and Walrein are my faves). So, the opportunity to make a purple water shiny on the CAP project is almost too good to pass up.
2) Purple goes well with red, since purple has red in it.
3) Purple seems to "fit" with a slithery, tentacled creature like CAP6.

But, purple water shinies typically have a normal color of blue, not green like our pirate squid. So, a purple shiny might not be right for this guy. I made other shinies in blue, aquamarine, and seaweed green -- to experiment with colors that bring out the Water typing. I'm interested to hear other opinions on shiny colorings.

All of your shiny colorings look awesome, but blue shiny has been done on CaP before, and aquamarine is something new, so I like that one. Seaweed green looks great and so does the purple one. Rules are meant to be broken; there is no official Pokemon creating hand-guide, etc.

To be honest, I think the previous was better. The transition is now more smooth, but the sword has lost a lot of its sharp-sword appeal. It's easy to see what I mean if you put the previous and this sprite in different tabs and alternate. It's thinner and lost the sharp point around the middle.

I love the shiny colors though, purple Lapras is one of my favorites too.

Set with shiny colours. Small alterations have been made to the original sprite. Since the current back pose doesn't show the differently gendered parts only two versions is needed.

Awesome, Wyverii. What I really like about your sprites is how vibrant the colors are. As hard as I try, my colors always end up somewhat dull. :T

I agree. I didn't realize that when I made the change. Here are two possible tweaks to the cutlass, that make it more "pointy":

The first one just reintroduces the point in the middle. In the second version, I fattened the sword overall, and made it a little more "curvy". I prefer the second one. I think I'll probably use both. One version will be in the female sprite, and the other will be in the male version. What do you think?

Very nice. :) I think the second is the best of the two too. The extra accent on what is for us the right makes the sword look sharper, a very nice touch.

I like your shiny color scheme the best of all sprites I've seen so far, but your back sprites are a bit flat. =/ Edit: also, shouldn't the fist tentacles at least be visible?

Alright I'll work on those backsprites, although I made it next to several other backsprites to mimic the "official style". And I'll try to make the fists more visible. Thanks for the feedback.

I absolutely love Doug's design. Might I give a small suggestion though? This isn't a big deal but I imagine this as a sea "boxer". When a boxer fights, the proper "style" is to hold the right hand (or whatever handed you are) is held "higher" and more forward. I was wondering if you could somehow make it appear that the right boxing tentacle is being held slightly higher then the left tentacle to make it mimic that style. I also just think the sprite would look cooler not having the two boxing tentacles at the same height. If it's too much trouble (or you just disagree with me) don't bother, I'd still love the sprite.

Edit: Even though Doug's is my favorite I wanted to congratulate all of you for your excellent work and contributions. Keep it up guys :)

Doug and Wyverii have made vast improvements on their designs. They're now up there with Cartoons as the three front-runners.

Someone give the female a eye patch for it's gender difference and 5 o'clock shadow for the male xD. Also, still love the design Chaos! The back sprite needs to capture the design mastery of the front. I think yours really captures the main art submission's design best.

Fully agree with everything you said. Great job everyone!

very nice. so far, you have my vote. for male/female differences, make female have a slightly smaller hat? like honchkrow?

EDIT: maybe the little notch on the hat is bigger than the other?

Will get to work on shinies soon.
The back sprites are looking really great; awesome job! Something is bugging me about the he front sprites though, which I believe is the right eye; I would recommend really trimming down the shadow surrounding it, making it more similar to the eye in the back sprite in proportions. In other words, try expanding the iris and pupil a bit and make the sclera a bit smaller, to make them more defined. I'm guessing you were trying to keep them (the iris and pupil) small to give it a more focused look or something to that effect, but it just seems to make that area of the sprite too busy (or perhaps not busy, but brings too much emphasis to the sclera, eyebrow, and, most significantly, the part of the mustache right under the pupil) and not look too appealing to me.

Interesting that you mentioned this Caelum. In my sprite, the fighter's lead hand (the hand on the left side of the picture) is low and extended, and the other hand is cocked more close to the body. I actually put the hands in that position intentionally. But, maybe it isn't working the way I intended. Let me explain...

Since this is a pirate, I was thinking that this boxer would box in "old-timey style" -- kind of like in the 1880's -1890's during the heyday of boxers like John L. Sullivan and Gentleman Jim Corbett, when boxing gloves first started being used. In those days, boxers held their hands lower. Here's a picture to see what I'm talking about:

Perhaps my homage to that fighting style is a little too obscure for an 80X80 pixel Pokemon sprite...

In modern boxing, the "jabbing" hand should be out AND up. Since the hand on the left was already stretched out a little more than the one on the right, I experimented with raising the lead hand up a little. Here's the old and new sprites side-by-side for comparison:

Personally, I still like the "old-timey" boxing pose. But, I don't have my heart set on it, and if people prefer the "modern" pose, I'll go with it. What do you think?

Nah, modern boxing is the way to go - like some names in the name discussion thread, the old style boxing position is too obscure for the majority of users to understand.

My main gripe with your sprite is that the outlines don't look that smooth on the front sprite, and some of your outline colours aren't right. You've also got way too many colours; all official sprites have 15 or less (not including transparent).

Would you mind if I edited it a bit?

Awesome sprites by everyone so far. As usual this will be a pretty tough choice!

Actually they have 16 or less but whatever >> (if you count black)

Really nice sprites all around but I'm not particularly fond of any of them for some reason...

Hopefully I'll have one done today
