Cave Story

Hip, pretty much the exact same is true of me. I lose all my health on the falling rocks part, then get killed by heavy press/ballos' lightning...

I downloaded it 2 or so months ago.

I managed to get to the GIANT FUCKING X MONSTER and eventually got pissed because I can't kill it.

If I took the time to repeatedly try to beat it I'm sure I'd win eventually but it always frustrates me beyond belief.

I get it down to the point where it shoots those weird fish-shaped missiles and then I die.

Really goddamned frustrating.

I do like the game though. It's all around awesome.

Also apparently trading the Polar Star for the machine gun is a bad idea.

monster X is a bitch till you know what to do

just kill as many of the gaudis (insect like things) as you can before the boss arrives, thenmake him shift his weight three times by jumping behind him, then when he opens up fire your mechine gun/polar star whatever like crazy until all his green blobsd are dead, then missile him to death

ps hip any tips for hell? So far ive found that taking room two slow is the way to go, ie killing the angels until the end when there's just too many to bother with, but i've still not got past ballos' first form...

I know what to do, my problem is that by the time I destroy the rb kajiggers on his body, I'm down to extremely low health, and it's nearly impossible to destroy all of the missiles and regain enough health to efficiently continue to kill the damn thing.

I basically just need to pay attention to where it's shooting and, well, avoid getting hit while recovering at the same time.

If you have the bubble weapon at level 3 you can charge a series of bubbled and release them all as soon as he opens up. That helps avoid getting blasted, and will eventually destroy those inner green things. Then it is just a matter of spamming missiles.

The machine gun is much more useful than the other things you can trade the polar star for IMO, and trying to beat the boss of the desert with just the polar star for a weapon is really damn hard.

For hell, take it slowly I guess, I can normally regain most of my health between the falling rocks room and heavy press, and the only part that usually results in losing health for me is the area directly before heavy press where there are two archers on a platform above a floor of spikes. I found the best way to deal with that room is to fly in with the machine gun.

Most other bits are just a matter of standing in the right place and firing until all the angels fly straight into your line of fire.

For heavy press I stand under him shooting and ignoring the angels, and just trying to hop over the rolling balls with as small jumps as possible until he is about to fire, then I jump out of the road and kill all the angels (the ones that havent already flown into my line of fire) and collect all the bonuses.

Then you can go through the door on the top right and shoot the statues, which gives you some bonuses.

For ballos, just jump over him as he runs to you, then run underneath him and jump over his bones. Shooting at him with the duck gun as you go. Sometimes I tend to jump into him accidentally, or make too small of a jump over the bones he fires but otherwise I dont get hit much.

And when you are avoiding his lightning, start at one end, run in a straight line, and when you get to the other end use the jetpack so you can turn around faster.

Ballos's second form I havent worked out a strategy for yet..

Also I always used the sword for monster X, I would just stand underneath him and shoot upward constantly..

Have a nice day.

Argh, on my first playthrough I can't decide whether to go Hard mode or Easy mode. What do veterans of this game think? Curly or no?

Yes, I am playing without being able to read the text.

Hip, the Machine Gun only seems useful... until you get the Spur.

The Spur eats pretty much every boss alive after you get it, which makes the game pretty piss-easy. And, as an extra added bonus, it is a Charging Weapon. That means that it doesn't need to level up, and as a result, will be at full power when you enter the Final Cave and the Sacred Grounds.

Machine Gun can be more useful in some parts, but against Ballos, the Spur shines because you don't need Weapon EXP for it. As such, you can get all the EXP with your other weapons, such as the Bubbler, which is always useful, and the Super Missiles, which are pretty indispensable when you fight some of Ballos' later forms.

Also, DarkFlagrance, go download the Deluxe Edition, which comes with a translation. Also, if it's your first playthrough, don't even think about trying Ballos. He is the stuff of legends, and only the most hardcore need apply. On your second playthrough? No problem.

It is the translation of the Deluxe edition that is the exact reason why I am unable to comprehend the text, for as the box scrolls down the old text does not vanish, and eventually I am left with a box full of unreadable overlapped letters. Have not been able to find a fix on the net.

Too bad you can't have more than one save on this game at a time.

The Spur just seemed like a pain in the ass to me..

If it is necessary for ballos then I'll get it, but otherwise its not worth the trouble..

Also you can have more than one save, you just have to move the files into a different directory.

Have a nice day.

The Spur is a little bit of a pain in the ass, but it's totally worth the trouble. First off, having a weapon that is completely independent of energy is amazing in the "Black Wind" dungeons, especially considering how tough some of the bosses there are. Second, the Blade is better at DPS and Crowd Control than the Machine Gun, and eventually you get the Nemesis, which outclasses the Machine Gun in most every way. Really, the Machine Gun is only useful for the first 15 minutes after you get it, then the Blade and the Missiles are really the only weapons you need, with the Bubbler seeing use rather sparingly as needed. Eventually, you then get the Nemesis, which is also invaluable in the Black Wind dungeons.

Plus, as an extra added bonus, it absolutely massacres Misery and The Doctor, which means you're more likely to have your Life Pot left over before you get to Ballos, which increases your chance of survival exponentially.

Also, use the Bubbler to beat the Falling Rocks room a lot easier than you normally would. You can use the Bubbler to create an effective shield against the Butes that tend to swarm you. The only problem is that it requires you to have good timing to get as many of the Experience Crystals as you can in the shaft before you get Curly Brace. It won't stave off ALL the damage, as you'll still have to juke rocks, but it can simplify things a lot.

So is it worth getting the spur or not?

Given I already have beaten misery and the doctor and have my life pot and I already have a weapon that is independant of charging..

Have a nice day.

this is great P+p' but how do i turn off the usic if i wanna lisetn to other tunes =(

this except the dumb gormenghast smiley (what is that i mean most of the times i can tell but this one is just mind-blowing)

i saved curly and am atm at egg corridor?????? . i got the machine gun and the booster 2.0 but i didnt investigate the spur before and didnt realize it was such a good weapon :( whatever i'll get it on my second playthrough (with the bad/normal ending)

totally agree that the spur destroys misery and the doctor! However, i always have to use my life pot on the proper final boss, those damn fish-like things that undead lesbian misery shoots are such a pain in the ass ;/

ps the game is actually quite short when you play through it twice, honestly you won't take long to get the booster 2.0 and spur if you missed it all first time around (like me)

Hmm... It's only a slightly interesting update, but looks like multiple save files are confirmed. This is good for those who want to start from the beginning but also want to keep their end game file without losing all that progress. That's one half of my wish list confirmed, now all we need is a Boss Rush mode.

It is a great shame that this is only for the Wii version and the PC version requires some screwing around with the data that has thus far eluded me.

Still, it makes sense for a game like this with multiple branches to get more than one save file. Otherwise negative reviewers would have seized on it like a shark on a nude bather.

I agree with this review. This game is just amazing - were it out for the NES or for the SNES back then, it would be considered a classic today. Fairly solid story, fantastic gameplay, great music (Moon Song, anyone? :toast:) and very cool characters. This game is like Metal Slug with cute. Fun as hell and a must download for anyone.

I liked the story a lot actually. Nowadays video games always overstep their boundaries; if I wanted an intricate work of fiction I'd read a damn book. Cavestory is charming in a nice oldschool way (ie multiple endings).

Also, personally I found the difficulty curve quite balanced. Like astonishingly so. Dare I say perfect?

this is probably my favorite platformer ever. GREAT story/music, a nice rpg element in the weapons, great gameplay, totally awesome visuals rather large world with plenty of secrets, a rather astonishing array of enemies/NPCs and the fact that ONE DUDE did ALL of it and put it out for free is kind of mind boggling. a great argument for games as art.

the boss battles are a bit easy, that's really my only "complaint" but yeah, it's not often that you want to play a platformer multiple times through, and that is certainly the case for cave story.

yeah!!!! keeps you on your toes but never makes you curse. it's pretty awesome.

gorms thoguhts pretty much mirror mine, though i found the boss battles to be well balanced!

pretty much everything about this game was perfect imo, i even downlaoded the soundtrack onto my ipod (when i set up my last.fm "studio pixel" was also my number one played artist, to put this into perspective)

i think my favourtie thing about it was all the secrets with the weapons and other items, and the sacred ground (which i still havent finished, balrog is so hard), but the game is perfectly paced, balanced, and presented

10/10 imo, really looking forward to the wiiware version

bumping to bring to attention a fantastic indie game that i came across recently called the underside, which takes all the good things that cave story did so well, and rather shamelessly implements them into a platformer with way more charm and humour. seriously, this game is absolutely hilarious. the humour often comes in the form of subtle pokes at itself, but there are a few laugh out loud moments that really reminded me of mother 3. my favourite part so far, for example, is a short way into the game, when you enter a long corridor with a sign at the start. the sign reads "we have a feeling you'll be seeing this sign again real soon -- the underside safety commitee". as you walk down the corridor, a huge elephant comes racing towards you, and as i turned to run away, passing the sign as i did so, i was actually laughing out loud.

as you can see it is very inspired by cave story, but if you can put that to one side then you'll be able to enjoy something that i felt was, in many regards, better than its predecessor. the platforming, for example, feels alot tighter, with the jumps being abit heavier and your movement speed bumped up a bit. all this makes the underside alot more fast paced than cave story, with it's slow, floaty physics and emphasis on exploration over action in many areas. still, the developer commented on his blog a while back (link) that hes started work on the "next stage" of the game, where the world opens up a whole lot more, and old areas become revisitable with new weapons and equipment, which i am really really excited about. hes also revealed on his blog that the finished game will feature achievements, equipment, and customizable weapons. this isnt empty promises either, most of it is already finished and he's said hes planning to release a new preview build featuring a bit more of the game and the new stuff fairly soon!

the game is still in development, but you can (and should!!) go check out the preview build thats available for download here. it's about an hour and a halfs worth of gameplay, featuring a few boss fights and a handful of weapons to find.

you can also find a video containing clips from the preview build as well as the later game here, on vimeo. the video doesnt really showcase the games best feature though, unfortunately (the humour), instead choosing to focus on the action, but still, its worth a look to give you an idea of what to expect.

so yeah, if you liked cave story, seriously, download this. do it right now. i guarantee you will not regret it. i am not joking when i say that, after an hour and a halfs gameplay, this has probably become my most anticipated game for the coming year, way up there with mario galaxy, scribblenauts, and layton 2. no joke.
