  • PROS

GREAT ABILITES: Clefable has access to Unaware and Magic Guard, both are fantastic abilities and make Clefable different from the hundreds of other normal types

GOOD STAT DISTRIBUTION: Though Clefable has a rather low Base Stat Total, it's stat distribution saves it from become something like Castform, with mediocre stats across the board.

INCREDIBLE MOVEPOOL: Clefable's movepool is ridiculous. It has so many options and can fufill almost any task on a team.

    CONS

JACK OF ALL TRADES, MASTER OF NONE: Clefable has so many options, but only has four moveslots available.

OFFENSIVELY WEAK: Without a set up, Clefable is mediocre and cannot hurt bulky offensive threats such as Drapion.

OUTCLASSED: As mentioned before, Clefable can do everything...mediocrely. Blissey outclasses it as a special wall, Snorlax outclasses it as a bulky offensive behemoth. It is best used as a surprise choice in OU battles.
Belly Drum Sweeper
Nature: Jolly/Hasty
Ability: Magic Guard
Item: Leftovers/Toxic Orb
Evs: 252 Atk/252 Spe/ 4hp
~Facade/Double Edge
~Belly Drum
~Wish/ Filler
~Fire Punch/Fire Blast

Belly Drum Clefable. Hits like a mach truck. Get Clefable in on a wall and wish the first turn. Belly Drum up, then watch wish heal you. Now you stand at +6 Atk and 100% HP. Facade if you're running Toxic Orb, Return for lefties. Fire Punch provides good coverage with normal moves, but if you feel like using Clefable in OU, change the nature to Hasty and put Fire Blast in it's place. If you need extra coverage, the only move you should replace is wish, as Clefable needs its STAB moves and the fire coverage.

Utilitable (see what I did there?)
Nature:Calm/Bold
Ability: Unaware
Item: Leftovers
Evs: 252 hp/ *def/ *spec def
~Wish
~Aromatherapy
~Thunderbolt/Ice beam/Flamethrower/Psychic/Toxic/Shadow Ball
~Thunderbolt/Ice beam/Flamethrower/Psychic/Toxic/Shadow Ball

*Evs are entirely dependant on what this set is trying to counter

The whole point of this set is as a counter to a specific threat. eg. +6 gyarados is about to rampage through your team. Switch in Clefable, take the hit with your customs Gyarados killing evs, and thunderbolt it to oblivious. Aromatherapy and wish are to support the team. Protect could also find it's way onto this set, as it works perfectly with Toxic, and complement Clefable's tankish stats.

**Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
252 HP/156 Def/84 SpA/16 SpD - Modest Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Ice Beam
- Flamethrower
- Wish

84 SpA EVs with modest OHKOs Dragonite/Mence/Chomp/Scizor/Gyara/Etc after SR.

SD LO Scizor does 63.5% - 75.1% with Brick Break
DD Dragonite does 69% - 81.2% with Superpower
DD Mence does 59.9% - 70.6% with Brick Break

**(Set suggested by PI-Dimension)

***Dual Screens
Clefable @ Light Clay/Leftovers
Nature: Calm/Bold
Ability: Unaware
Evs: 252 hp/252 def/4 spec d
~Light Screen
~Reflect
~Wish/Flamethrower/Healing Wish
~Encore

*** As suggested by Kibago

The aim of the game here is get Clefable in on a Set up sweeper, Encore the move and set up your screens. After Clefable's done it's job, Wish to heal the next pokemon coming in, Healing wish if you feel you don't need clefable, or Flamethrower to stop you from being mauled by Taunt. Almost no unboosted move will 1hit K.O Clefable in the metagame, allowing it to Encore the hit and switch in a pokemon with an immunity/resistance (Shadow Tag Shandera says hi)

So, in summary, Clefable has got a huge boost. Unaware and Magic guard are both fantastic abilities, and when you combine it with Clefable's diverse and useful movepool, it sounds fantastic. However, Clefable's stats are slightly lacking, and with all the new heavy hitters this generation, I fear it won't be up to the mark.

Feel free to add any sets, or point out any mistakes made in this thread.

Thanks in advance.
Donny.

Unaware pales in comparison to Magic Guard unless you really want to snipe things like Stockpile Cradily.

Cheer Up is interesting, though. Possible bulky sweeper Clefable? Cheer Up/Softboiled or Wish and two attacking moves?

I would hardly call Amnesia "for competitive use". Tobybro was great and all, but it's 5th gen now. Amnesia became pretty useless after the Special Split 10 years ago.

Cheer Up sounds great in theory, but Clefable's stats are slightly lacking for a mixed sweeper roll. Even at +6 attack it still only reaches an attack stat of around 1000 ( I think). And having to split the evs doesn't help either. It's a option, I guess.

Frankly, I believe that clefable have no business trying to attack. A set with wish, aromatherapy, toxic and protect would work great for support thanks to the magic guard given entry hazard immunity. Sure it sounds very gen IV but it works

Firstly, Softboiled>Wish on the BD set, and you should almost never run Toxic Orb Facade unless you're using Trick, as Life Orb Double-Edge (both forms of recoil are removed by Magic Guard) is more powerful. The Facade strategy does have the advantage of immunity to status, though. Also, you should never run Return on MG Clefable (read: any Clefable), as Double-Edge is more powerful with no drawbacks.

Thanks for that, I'll make the appropriate edits.

Unaware is HUGE on Clefable at this point - I've been running 252HP/252Def with Thunder Wave+double screens and she's brilliant at turning momentum on an instant - when you've turned a Butterfly Dancer into setup bait for screens...
(watch out for Taunt, of course, but i haven't seen very many Taunt-boosters.)

Life Orb shoudl be a given on this set so you can KO without SR if you're running Magic Guard. Quite frankly hazard damage isn't scaring Clefable off anytime soon nor does he lack recovery.

Obviously you wouldn't run Magic Guard on a set with the sole purpose of using Unaware to check Gyarados / Mence / etc.

Ooooh, ooh. I have a set that will almost certainly make the opponent ragequit.

Clefable @ Leftovers
Unaware, Quiet nature?
252 HP, 252 SpD, 4 Speed?

~ Psych Up
~ Ice Beam
~ Thunderbolt
~ Softboiled / Thunder Wave

Okay, switch in on a Calm Minder or a Nasty Plotter, tank a hit from them with Unaware and either Psych Up or Thunder Wave them. If you're facing a Calm Minder, then you can T Wave them as they hit, then Psych Up and nab the defensive boosts, easily tanking the next hit whilst simultaneously giving yourself plenty of attack power. Then start frying stuff with BoltBeam coverage? Against a Nasty Plotter, you'll have to Psych Up straight away and hope you can tank two hits.

Is this worth mentioning?

2 moves I'm surprised that haven't been touched on.
Clefable @ Leftovers
252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Unaware / Magic Guard
Bold / Modest
Calm Mind
Thunderbolt
Ice Beam
Wish / Softboiled
Unaware means you can stat up with nasty ploters or other cm's and then lay the hurt on them, magic guard means you can't be toxic stalled out and you can use softboiled.

and

Clefable @ Leftovers
252 HP / 180 Def / 76 SpD
Unaware / Magic Guard
Calm
Cosmic Power
Toxic
Wish / Softboiled
Flamethrower / Aromatherapy / Seismic Toss
Again, with unaware you can stat up in the face of other stat up abusers and then stall them out, but magic guard gives you immunity to toxic once more and lets you use softboiled and seismic toss.

I've been trying this set out on Pokemon Online, and it is fantastic.

Clefable @ Leftovers
Unaware
4 HP, 252 SpD, 252 Def

- Cosmic Power
- Wish
- Assist Power
- Copycat

The main point is to abuse Cosmic Power, top up your health with Wish, and then hit hard back with a significant 12+ Assist Power. The fourth move can be anything, but Copycat provides by far the most potential for an annoying set.

It works best when you're opponent assumes you're a Magic Guard user, notices a set-up and attempts his own - only to find that their attacks do pitiful damage and your attacks rip right through them, because of Unaware. Choices of when to play Clefable depend on this. Access to recovery means it's very hard to stop when its on a roll, outside of Toxic and Crits. Phazing is also a problem, in which case Wish provides some extra utility.

Copycat is convenient in that it can copy an opponents boosts - especially boosts that don't regard defense mean Assist Power has the potential to be even more powerful. Being able to copy other moves, such as Substitute, Baton Pass, Hidden Power, Toxic, Will-o-wisp and Recover also mean stall will have a problem against it. If this seems unreliable, then Clefable's vast movepool provides many other options. The set works badly against Dark and Steel types, so whilst Copycat can sometimes suffice, a Fighting Move is useful too.

Currently i'm not sure how Hidden Power works with Copycat, but I assume it depends on the user, not the move itself, that determines type. In which case, this is something to consider.

Honestly, Clefable's niche usage as a magic guard user has been somewhat usurped by Rankurusu, which possesses at least moderate SpA, allowing it do do some actual damage

Kind of agree here, Clefable's niche in gen 4 was Magic Guard, but now more ('better') Pokemon get it.

Unaware is a nice ability, but still other stuff like Quagsire enjoy it more.

I wouldn't call 125 base SpA "moderate"

Clefable's movepool is still so absolutely large it will no doubt find use with people.

You should probably mention in the OP all the moves Clefable loses out on when she uses her Dream World Ability.

I've checked and i've checked and i've checked yet I can't find anywhere how to get wish and bellydrum onto a clefable. Apparently its' illegal. Someone please prove me wrong!

You can't, that's why in the Analysis on site they always listed Belly Drum+ softboiled. Don't know if OP will fix that since the thread was dead from dec 2010...

About clefable, her role hasn't changed as a bulky normal type which is immune to most of status problems (when using Magic guard), she will continue to annoy the opponents and support her team in the lower tiers, specially now, since eviolite-chansey will probably have a seat in the new OU.

I don't know about Unaware versions, though looks interesting too.
