Gyarados could be exchanged for Fur Coat for similar physical bulk.
Fur coat doesn't make you 180 atk, neither does Milotic
that stall is top strong
So are we saying it's not ?
Banning Gyarados wouldn’t solve the problem you’re trying to solve here
Can we not hyperfocus on the option I said would be the least useful, and ignore the point of gyarados + intim giving ridiculous amounts of special bulk, 125 atk and intimidate ?

Then I guess the tier is dead because people don't know how to play. Nothing to be done I guess

First time poster here, I just gotta share this set:

Hariyama (Sandshrew-Alola) @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Thick Fat
Tera Type: Ice
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Belly Drum
- Ice Shard
- Drain Punch
- Bullet Punch

Hariyama CE's are best known for being Guts sweepers, but this set instead looks to use Hariyama's good Atk and acceptable bulk to create a belly drum sweeper.
Sandshrew-A is the chosen recipient because a) it has a good STAB priority option in Ice Shard which absolutely murders Gligar, b) it has the steel typing, helping with defense and granting STAB on Bullet Punch (Hariyama's one priority move), and c) it has good enough stats for the job. Thick Fat was chosen over Guts because Guts isn't very helpful for it: you already kill just about anything and really don't want the constant chip damage. Additionally, Thick Fat softens the 4x fire weakness and gives you the hilarious 8x ice resist. Drain Punch gives you something to hit water types and a way to heal against the many dark types you'll find.
You get some hazards up and keep your field clear, slow Parting Shot Sandshrew in, Belly Drum, sweep. I've been using Incineroar Dusclops as a partner and its been working wonderfully. Just watch out for Mach Punch, its very scary to this set.

Make up your mind

As with Eviolite, cross-evolved Pokemon are not considered to be the species of either the base or the evolution. They are both considered completely different Pokemon (imagine how many exceptions we would have to code for Eviolite/Light Ball/Thick Club (last gen) etc.). So yes, neither of those Pokemon are considered to be a Pikachu as far as Cross Evolution is concerned.

I've just cooked this :

Toxtricity (Snover) (M) @ Loaded Dice
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Shift Gear / Swords Dance
- Icicle Spear
- Bullet Seed
- Drain Punch / Ice Shard

It has a bad typing (at least defensively), average stats for CE and require support to work BUT if you intend to use Aurora Veil, it might have potential (even though it's outclassed by :mudbray: / :cloyster: in every way).
That being said, give the little snowman a chance at least!

have had decent luck laddering with this team, there's some combinations that i dont see on recent pages,

Qwilfish-H > Hitmontop with AV can comfortably tank quite a few meta staples. same role as older gen Alolan-Muk in ubers, but hits harder, esp with technician + triple axel for punishing misplays on gligar variants. im a bit divided on mach punch because it makes fish a dud against bisharp > tsareena, but it's too good for cleanups excluding that scenario.

Sliggoo-Hisui is an interesting anti-meta pick because of high SpD + a pretty great typing. mostly prefer making it a special wall with AV. kommo-o to evolve is cute for focus miss / shadow ball immunity, but levitate (i use hydrei over flygon / vikavolt / eelektross (?)) seems to work better at least on my team. it can wall vivillon variants + magneton > clefable quite comfortably.

I tried primeape > dnite but found it too easy to stall / wall, and red card + acro is pretty cool but rocks become a pain. i had moderate luck with garganacl evo earlier, but really the bulk up setup (playing annihilape style with drain punch) is too slow, even though the status immunity is nice to have. running hamurott as the evo right now, it's not the best but it does the job. really it's just a check for all the bisharps around.

i like dusclops > garchomp even though im all too aware of the opportunity cost there. ~25% chip on contact is pretty punishing, and can whittle down enemies deceptively quickly. i also get dragon tail from it which is pretty cool.

gligar > glimmora feels like a noob trap, but i still like the role compression i get out of it. it's definitely suboptimal by itself, but works nicely for putting hazard pressure. was using spikes on it before but really all four attacks were all too important to stop it from becoming a sitting duck. i can still see spikes working over u-turn though.

as far as teams go, haven't seen much stall on the ladder, but a lot of offensive / mixed teams. ran into qwilfish-h > ceruledge in one game, and that was definitely oppressive. haven't struggled as much with other ceruledge variants, but i dont think i could handle one in an open team sheets setting.

i do also see gyarados adding an obscene amount of stats on gligar and what have you. the only silver lining is the ice / electric weakness (sometimes 4x) that it gives to the recipient.

speed tiers are interesting in this OM, most things aren't /that/ fast. a lot of the speed investments / natures i find myself running feel wrong, but they end up working somewhat.

I’ve been lurking CE this whole month, but I figured I’d pitch my thoughts now.

I really enjoyed this meta and its creative take on modifying Pokemon. I wish the ladder had been more active, but it is what it is. I enjoy the fact that, oddly, Regenerator isn’t super meta, at least from my experiences.

On the subject of the centralization of Gligar/Bisharp/Qwil, or strength of stall, I don’t find these to be problems. Every meta has some degree of centralization, none of the top three are broken, and the complaints about stall are complaints you hear in any balanced meta where offense isn’t overly dominant. Offense and Balance still have the tools to get around stall, be it Taunt, Trick Choice, Psychic Noise, hazard stacking, mixed breakers. I even got goobed on ladder by a Dachsbun Ekans that used Coil and Gastro Acid to break my Unaware-mons. Kudos, my guy, that’s some neat stuff.

For mixed stall breakers, I found Milotic+Stantler to be a pretty good one. Switching into it is a nightmare for stall:

:sv/Stantler:
Milotic (Stantler) @ Flame Orb
Ability: Marvel Scale
Tera Type: Normal
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Facade
- Shadow Ball
- Earth Power
- Ice Beam

Having said that, I would be very much in support of a Nickname Clause. Team preview is near useless in this format, as you cannot get a clear picture of anything as far as ability, stats, or even typing, and losing to a surprise Last Respects or Protean-Mon at the end of the game just kind of sucks. I never personally ran into a Zoroark-evo, but yeah… that sounds down right infuriating. I don’t think you could argue this problem is limited to Illusion—every Mon in this meta can pull some surprise shenanigans, to some degree.

———

Final notes: I tend to suck at laddering as I play at work and jump accounts often, but I found I enjoyed using Trick Room in this meta, as it is was pretty easy making breakers with the utility to beat most Trick Room counterplay. Here’s the version I had the most success with. I found I didn’t like any slow special attackers, as getting walled by either Chansey or Clod+Qwil was too momentum sapping, but the abundance of good physical options made overwhelming defensive cores fairly straightforward.

:chansey::dusclops::cranidos::fraxure::piloswine::Rhydon:

First the TR setters:

:gardevoir: + :chansey: : Brings the coveted Teleport + Trick Room combo that sets TR and gets in the breakers safely, which let Porygon2 enable TR to be a legit threat in Gen 8 OU Singles. Trace lets Chansey copy all sorts of useful abilities, like stopping Trick on Dengo-evos, Punk Rock softening Boomburst on Toxtri-evos, switching into Intimidate-Gyara evos, etc.

:Clefable: + :dusclops: : Just a good fat Unaware Defensive Wall + TR Setter that can sit on offensive threats for days. Colbur Berry lets it trade Willo’ against Dark mons like Bisharp and Qwil.

:Hatterene: + :Rhydon: : This is a legit great offensive lead that stops hazard stacking / Taunt with Magic Bounce and usually nets a few KOs with its strong/perfect coverage. Ground + Fairy is great both offensively and defensively, and Ice Punch makes Gligar a poor counter. Rocky Helmet lets it break Sashes (Samurott-evos) or finish weakened stuff just by switching in, saving TR turns.

Now the heavy hitters:

:Urshifu-Rapid-Strike: + :cranidos: Surging Strikes and Unseen Fist together break through so many standard TR counters it isn’t funny - Intimidate, Screens, Sturdy, Sashes, Substitutes, Defense-boosting, Protect. My logic? Put Urshifu and Band on the hardest hitting LC-Mon and just break stuff. Head Smash Breaks water resists, CC breaks Corv+Dipplin, Aqua Jet for prio. Nuff said.

:Tsareena: + :piloswine: : By far, my favorite mon of this team.

Ground + Ice STAB is really good, and putting more attack power on them is really, really good, but what makes this set stupidly good is Queenly Majesty. After all, what good is power if you get forced out by all the strong priority flying around everywhere? (QM also protects from Prankster, fyi.)
Loaded Dice Icicle Spear has the same utility S. Strikes does beating Subs/Sturdy/Sash does while also not making contact so no Rough Skin/Helmet recoil, while Knock Off hits Balloon + Dengo-evos hard and removes items and U-Turn keeps momentum.

At this point, the team was pretty good but still susceptible to running out of Trick Room turns to support the breakers and thudding into Iron Defense mons, especially ones that resist Surging Strikes like Shellder and Sliggo. I was also a bit weak to Ceruledge-evos since Dusc cannot burn it. I also could use a Water resist, as well as another Dark and Ghost resist to take some pressure off the TR setters.
Turns out, the best way to solve all these problems was to win the speed war from the other end.

:meowscarada: + :fraxure: : Wild card, baby! Scarf Protean Fraxure hits hard and fast outside TR, complementing my slow breakers, putting the opponent in checkmate situations where they lose the speed war no matter what. It’s also very defensively unpredictable, since it changes its typing with Protean. For instance, quickly becoming a Fairy type lets it be surprisingly immune to Dragon and resisting Fighting is quite handy.

Dragon + Dark as a base defensive typing provides nice synergy with the team, letting it get in against Araquanid and Ceruledge-evos, I otherwise would struggle to switch in on.

Flower Trick lets it crit through screens the same as Surging Strikes, while also giving me a different crit typing to bypass Water types. Defensive Dragon types like Dipplin and Sliggo could still give trouble, but Trick Scarf totally ruins them. For the last two moves I chose Throat Chop and Play Rough, both of which hit Ceruledge-evos for SE damage, whether they are Normal+Ghost or Dark+Ghost. Throat Chop is chosen over Knock Off so I can still use a Dark STAB on something I’ve tricked a scarf on to, while also making Frax immune to Boomburst and other sound moves.

It's the end of the month! Here's the teams that I've been using:

Substitute version: :mudbray: :gligar: :qwilfish-hisui: :bisharp: :magmar: :koraidon:
Ice Shard version: :mudbray: :gligar: :qwilfish-hisui: :bisharp: :magmar: :koraidon:

Notes:

:mudbray: :cloyster:
Substitute can be run on Mudbray to dodge status moves. Notably, this allows you to beat Dusclops, which would normally be able to sacrifice itself to burn you. Alternatively, Ice Shard can be used as priority before setting up, or can be used after a Shell Smash against opposing priority. I'm not sure which one is better. 200 Spe allows you to outspeed Electabuzz Vivillon after a Shell Smash.

:gligar: :ninetales-alola:
I wish that I could run Stealth Rock on this, but I don't think that I can afford to. Moonblast is mandatory for Koraidon, Taunt is great to prevent Pokémon from setting up, setting hazards, using recovery, or something else, and U-turn is great for momentum. I think that you probably could replace U-turn with Stealth Rock, but I don't really think that this team needs it.

:qwilfish-hisui: :ceruledge:
Even with Bisharp for removal, I think that Boots are required here for consistency, especially since Qwilfish likes to switch a lot, and I don't like facing Sticky Web or Toxic Spikes.

:bisharp: :tsareena:
This doesn't really abuse screens that much, but I've found it to be important structurally, and Sucker Punch is amazing to have against basically anything.

:magmar: :vivillon:
Interestingly, I've found Taunt to be better on this than Quiver Dance. With Sun from Koraidon, Magmar can beat Chansey Clefable thanks to Taunt.

:koraidon:
Heat Crash is an option for the Fire move, but I opted for Flare Blitz since Heat Crash is only 100 BP against Gligar, and only 60 against Rhydon. Rhydon is especially important since none of my other moves can hit Rhydon Hatterene.

This was the only team I used on the Dark Koopatrol account, aside from 2 games where I accidentally used the wrong team. This was my peak:
Screenshot 2025-03-21 140111.png
U-turn version: :dusclops: :gligar: :chansey: :vullaby: :bisharp: :magneton:
Stealth Rock version: :dusclops: :gligar: :chansey: :vullaby: :bisharp: :magneton:

Notes:

:dusclops: :chesnaught:
This is actually the best spinblocker in the tier, since Chesnaught's Fighting-type makes Dusclops a bulky Ghost-type that isn't weak to Dark. This learns Spikes, but I decided to not run it, since I figured that Gligar would probably be a better Spikes user, and Dusclops has other moves that it'd rather use anyway. The Speed IVs let Dusclops outspeed Calyrex-Ice in Trick Room while still being faster than other Dusclops. This is relevant because Calyrex-Ice actually matches up really well into my team when Trick Room is up, and there's no drawbacks to lowering my Speed anyway.

:gligar: :clodsire:
I tried running Stealth Rock on this, but there wasn't any move that I wanted to drop. Earthquake is Gligar's best attack, and it notably hits Qwilfish-Hisui for super effective damage, and I really didn't like dropping U-turn since I felt like the pivoting helped a lot. Since it has Unaware, in certain situations, Gligar can be used to deal with special attacking Pokémon, though this isn't always the best solution.

:chansey: :gardevoir:
I tried running Stealth Rock on this, but there's a big issue with this: I can't run any attacks on it. Teleport, Soft-Boiled, and Heal Bell are all mandatory, so the only move that I can drop is Night Shade, which leaves me without any moves that can deal any damage. Despite this, running Stealth Rock on Chansey wasn't that bad, since Teleporting into Bisharp or Magneton is usually enough to deal with special attackers, and this is something that I'd often have to do anyway since Chansey is somewhat weak against special setup. Still, dropping all attacks is far from ideal, so there's also a version with Night Shade on Chansey.

:vullaby: :persian-alola:
This was originally a Slowpoke Persian-Alola to deal with Mudbray Cloyster, but it was terrible and did basically nothing most of the time. You might be able to cross-evolve Vullaby into Quagsire to run Stealth Rock instead of Toxic and be a bit better against setup, but you take a lot more damage if your opponent doesn't use a setup move, you lose Toxic, and I haven't tested this.

:bisharp: :tsareena:
This was originally added for hazard removal since Dusclops would usually lose its item when it spinblocks, but I found that this wasn't necessary since the rest of my team didn't care about hazards. However, I still found it to be useful due to its access to Sucker Punch and Knock Off, and its bulk allowing it to survive most attacks. Triple Axel is essential for this team, since it allows Bisharp to threaten Gligar, which forces something else to lose its item. Ideally, the last move would be U-turn, but Bisharp also learns Stealth Rock and U-turn isn't that essential. Bisharp is obviously a terrible Stealth Rock user, but nothing else really likes running it so it's still an option despite that.

:magneton: :hydreigon:
This is really the only Pokémon that can finish this team. Its Steel typing + Levitate allows it to help against Mudbray Cloyster and makes it resistant to hazards, Magneton Hydreigon is a great Pokémon against more offensive teams, and Volt Switch allows it to not be completely useless against bulkier teams. In my post about this Pokémon, I recommended running a Timid Nature to make it a bit more consistent at handling Mudbray Cloyster, but I decided to run a Modest Nature since I felt that Magneton really needed the extra damage, Timid only helped against Mudbray, Magneton was still useful against Mudbray even with a Modest Nature, and Mudbray beats Magneton anyway if screens are up and the Mudbray user knows who's faster.

This is the main team that I've been using on the Light Koopatrol account. I didn't ladder nearly as much with Light Koopatrol as I did with Dark Koopatrol, but I still managed to be at #3 on the ladder for I think most of the month, though I did fall to #4 at some points due to inactivity. This was my peak:

I save replays of most of my battles so it should be easy enough to find them if you're interested.

Just for our visuals, here are the top 50 usage stats for this past month's ladder, as well as the most common movesets as provided by Smogon. May do a review of these stats at some other time to see how the ladder changed this time compared to last time.

Edit: I am aware of how messy this is just pasting in the raw data (I had to do some cleanup to the movepools for it to be within the character limit). Hopefully this should be readable for everyone and I may come back and clean it up some more.

It has a bad typing (at least defensively), average stats for CE and require support to work BUT if you intend to use Aurora Veil, it might have potential (even though it's outclassed by :mudbray: / :cloyster: in every way).
That being said, give the little snowman a chance at least!

I used it for quite a while back in june on this team
