DPPt In-Game Tier List Thread v2

From my brief research, the best strategy seems to be leveling it up to 100 Friendship, then spamming X items against passive wild Pokemon to 200, then leveling up to 220. This sounds a bit onerous and expensive, but having Umbreon online by Wake if not Fantina sounds important for information completeness. I won't know the practicality of this approach for sure until I test.
My run is still ongoing, but I've executed the strategy and want to share my results ASAP. Turns out you can only buy X items from Veilstone Dept Store, so I played Eevee as normal until that point. After training it up some while holding Soothe Bell to test against Rival 3, it entered Veilstone at 139 Friendship.
  • I bought 30 each of X Special, X Sp. Def, and X Speed, the cheapest at 350 per. This is affordable with the various sell items and/or Amulet Coin use.
  • I fished up a Magikarp at the pond just south of Veilstone, used six of each X item I bought on top of the six or so I incidentally picked up playing normally, then ran away once maxed out.
  • In hindsight, I should have just switched to reset the boosts. That would save a lot of time from getting unlucky from failed fishing.
  • In four battles, I had reached 200 Friendship, the max you can reach using X items. It's indicated by two hearts in the Friendship Checker app.
  • Note that Soothe Bell increases Friendship gains by 50% rounded down. This means that +1 activities such as walking and X item use do not get any boost.
  • This X item process took around 17 minutes of real time with battle animations off and touch screen navigation. With switching instead of running and better fishing luck, this could easily take 15 minutes or less.
  • This gave me Umbreon at level 31, a reasonable level before even facing Maylene. My overworld navigation was accelerated in some areas and back-and-forth in others, so I think my walking Friendship gains were in the ballpark of a casual run.
  • I got one massage, used two vitamins, and fainted twice for other FS modifiers.
I personally think this method, while not a game-changer that would cause tier shifts, is a worthwhile strategy for getting FS evos faster. It would be worth mentioning for certain Pokemon entries as a way for casual players to get their payoff a bit sooner, especially Espeon and Chimecho, which have an advantage over Maylene. If I didn't use this method, I think getting the evolution by even Wake under efficient play would have been an issue. 15 minutes is comparable to a brief grinding session you'd undertake if you're worried about the upcoming boss. Someone could easily do it while watching TV and have their evo much sooner, possibly saving 15 minutes of hassle in the long term.

Recently doing a new Platinum run, and I'm gonna attempt that Secret Key exploit on that run if possible. In the meantime, I'm still gonna dump all the Platinum logs that I've been saving, and this one consist of Geodude(No Trade), Wormadam-Trash, Gastly (No Trade), and Tangela (I forgot the "exact" Nature on them, but I know its all neutral nature)

D Tier. On this run, I was struggling to pick which mon should I run next, as I've already done the majority of current As, Bs, and Cs. Then, Volt suggested me to used WormaTrash, thus I decided to used it. It is great in the early-game, then its irrelevant past that. Its defensive-typing felt honestly overrated. Sure, it technically has no weaknesses because Sinnoh has almost no Fire-type, but it doesn't make WormaTrash invincible or anything. When I read "Bug/Steel is the best defensive type", I interpreted it as it resisted a lot of stuff, which only happened in the early-game. Past Fantina, it doesn't really resist enough, it felted kinda little. You could argue E Tier because honey trees really sucks, but its early-game performance is enough to ranked it as D Tier personally.

D Tier, with a chance of C Tier. Pre-Shadow Ball phase is... not great. There were cases where Night Shade doesn't even 2HKO stuff on route, which is pretty bad given how frail this mon is and Ghost/Poison typing doesn't give you enough resistances. It was pretty bad into Jupiter section, bc every Grunt just beats Gastly besides Stunky. It does get a huge powerspike when it reaches Level 33, but it flops in the late-game to the point it resorts to just using Destiny Bond into something there, especially in the last three fights.

D Tier, with a strong chance of C Tier. The D Tier nomination is for how annoying it is to catch Tangela. Sure its a 25% encounter, but its a Safari Zone mon, which it can flee, and has the lowest catch rate of 45. Just for comparison, Quagsire and Noctowl had 90, Bibarel had 127, then the rest (including Carnivine and Tropius) had around 200. Not to mention, it needs Chlorophyll, which only 50% of the Tangelas had. If you focus more onto how it fared into battle, then yes, its a C Tier mon.

C Tier. Couldn't say much here. Gliscor is mostly okay, but i wished it could have done better in the late-game, 95 Attack can be little lacking sometimes.
This is the only one that's a little surprising from your post. I would've thought B tier. By running Gliscor you're already planning to invest the Earthquake TM, and it might be the best candidate for it in the game aside from Garchomp. Plus Faint Attack right before Fantina, Razor Fang & Aerial Ace TM at very reasonable points of the game. Level up Swords Dance, re-learnable elemental fangs, along with plenty of other viable coverage moves. And solid matchups overall on paper on account of its great defensive typing & stats to open up SD opportunities. I don't have formal logs sorry, but just thought I'd chime in on this one.

I could definitely see D tier. Just want to say Repelling Marsh area 1 or 2 with a level 31 mon in front might be a better approach to improve the encounter experience. I've run this mon multiple times and that part really isn't that bad. It's more so the horrible late game matchups.

You do get Tangrowth pretty soon after catching Tangela and it has fantastic base stats for that point of the game, along with fairly immediate access to a solid move set. Plus a great Wake matchup, who's a moderately difficult boss. I'd personally nominate C tier but could see D.

As a recent Gliscor user I agree with C tier, it's better in paper than it turns out in practice, the speed and attack and bulk bench marks just don't hit the way you want and the matchups late game when it comes online are largely hostile

Its Electric-typing can be a lifesaver, especially into some of the harder bosses, which is why I think Luxray is great on some people, and double Intim core with Staraptor is great at neutering physical attackers. Spark is a great STAB in the early-game, but that's its only best physical STAB throughout the game. Thunderbolt is fine tho. Its middling speed is a letdown on some fights, and its showcased by Wake. Unless you outspeed his Gyarados, you have to rely on not getting flinched or Floatzel will beat you.

C Tier. Psyduck is just bleh until Surf, and its Roark matchup requires you to be faster than Cranidos in order to sweep there. I think you’re better off just catching a wild Golduck instead. Surf Golduck is a good mon, and I do like that it could actually beat Cynthia's Garchomp, but that's pretty much about it. I tried this mon as a HM Slave on some run, and its like 2nd best one right after Bidoof. It doesn't learn Cut, but that move was only used in like one section and is pretty much useless afterward(unless you want to grab Earthquake TM or Shock Wave TM). B Tier. Rampardos is carried by having a super high Attack stat, because man, does this mon used Earthquake a lot on routes, and some unSTAB move in some cases, and if you value STAB so much, then have fun using Rock Tomb until after Gym 7. Performance-wise, it does have some good matchups, including Distortion Cyrus, but it may rely on AI derps to sweep some fights, such as Maylene, Flint, and Lucian. i didn’t like it only uses Swords Dance for 2 or 3 matchups (Candice and Lucian, and to some extent, Aaron). I’m not sure what’s the average time for finding the fossil in the Underground, because I got mine in just under 5 minutes, and that might drop it to C if it takes too long. It also hogs the Earthquake TM for itself, and it needs it to sweep Candice (If you’re not gonna used Fire Punch), Maylene, and Byron.

F Tier, with a chance of E Tier. Horrible IVs aside, there's not that much difference between Mesprit and Uxie in terms of power, but the lower speed can hurt a bit. It could still be F Tier due to being a roaming pokemon, which is still annoying to get even with Marker Map App.

Glad to see the thread back. However I'd like to speak out AGAINST tiering Rotom forms, and if they're tiered, we should also be tiering every single other event pokemon. Tiering the alternate Rotom forms because "everyone has access to the dns exploit" (not true, especially factoring in that emulation exists) does not make any sense unless every single other event is being tiered and considered. We can tier the level 5 Jirachi and mew, the manaphy egg, we can tier the event legendary beasts, event Deoxys, etc, but should we? "It can be easily accessed with cheats or cfw" does not move the needle for me because those shouldn't be considered in a standard tier list at all.

With this in mind I'd like to nominate Jirachi for A rank, Mew for A rank, Suicune for A, Entei for B, Raikou for B, Deoxys in A, the Manaphy egg in B, Phione in F, almia darkrai in A, and the level 100 Arceus in S. Or we could simply not tier event exclusives. It doesn't make sense to do "just one because this one is special and somehow different"

I... gave up on that DNS exploit thingy on my ongoing run. Felt kinda complicated to do it personally and also, i didn't have a hotspot without password apparently. I only tried to do it because i got curious, but looking back at it, it does feel weird to include such exploit in a tier list, especially when its only used on one mon (Rotom).

Anyway, here's a Platinum run (not the ongoing one) consisting of Dustox, Beautifly, Noctowl, Vaporeon, and Absol

F Tier. This thing really needs Bug Bite for STAB, and without it, you're literally running a STABless mon for like 20 levels, and its not worth waiting that long to get a STAB in Silver Wind, which literally has same 60 BP as Bug Bite but with less PP. With only 50/50 offenses, STABless Dustox's damage output just makes Onix look like an actual nuke, at least that weak-sauce rock snake has a STAB to work with, including STAB Earthquake. Its so bad that I was only 3-4HKOing stuff on routes and its really showing by Gardenia, who is supposedly its best-matchup. Sure, you hardwalled her team, but Dustox almost lost to Cherrim and Roserade because its damage output sucks without Bug Bite. But Dustox has Moonlight to not die, tho? That doesn't mask the fact that it takes forever for Dustox to beat something (Does barely 6HKOing Roserade look like great to you?). I don't give a care if it hardwalls her team, what matters more is beating something quickly.

F Tier. I initially thought this was better than Dustox, but somehow, it performed more miserably than it. Its overall performance just truly screams F Tier to me, beating literally 0 into some bosses, and requiring very specific stuff just to beat at least 1, few of which include hoping to dodge an enemy move. Really, I taught this mon Psychic to hit Saturn's Toxicroak in Lake Valor, only for it to get outsped and one-shotted by it, lol. It just outweighted whatever good thing Beautifly otherwise had like sure, you sweep Gardenia, but you're borderline deadweight afterwards for so long until Candice.

E Tier, with a chance of D Tier. This is ranked based on how it fared on battle, and the D Tier is moreso its ability to beat Mars and potentially, Jupiter and Fantina with CurlOut. It faces major 4 moveslot syndrome to the point you can’t used this more effectively on battle while doing HM duty at the same time. It needs CurlOut for bosses, Water Gun for Rocks, and Headbutt for stronger STAB. Curse + Amnesia is really fun in the Elite 4, though it needed a lot of healing to sweep, but my biggest problem here is that, outside of that fight, Simple without an X-Item is just borderline horrible aside from few fights where the crucial extra Defense boost from Defense Curl matter such as against Jupiter. Simple also makes Bidoof a bit annoying to grind in the early-game due to extreme vulnerability to Growl and Leer, which I swear is spammed a lot. Bibarel doesn’t even learn Swords Dance in this game.

As a HM Slave, it is mandatory to have, sure, but this game really forces you to have at least 2 HM Slaves per playthrough. Bidoof is, i believed, one of the 4 mons that learns both Rock Smash and Cut, the other 3 being literally the starters. The problem here is that you pretty much bench this mon after Jupiter unless you're grabbing Earthquake TM and maybe, Shock Wave TM, because you don't need HMs to progress through the story until Celestic, at which point, you won't be using that Bidoof and instead you should be catching your 2nd HM Slave instead, preferably the Bibarel from Hearthome. You can’t rely heavily on first route Bidoof alone as your HM Slave throughout the entire playthrough. Bidoof doesn’t even learn Surf until you evolved it and it doesn’t feel right that you have to grind your HM Slave levels despite how easy it should be by Celestic

I tried Shadow Ball into Explosion against Garchomp, since Drifblim lives a Dragon Rush (you need Oran to proc Unburden in order to outspeed it on the next turn), but it didn't work because Cynthia immediately switches out her Garchomp for Togekiss after the first hit

Beats 1
D Tier. D Tier looks fine here, i supposed. Unburden is actually fun to use, but Drifblim has some issues into offense when it tries to do some Unburden strat. Man, this mon is really missing out a lot of OHKOs and 2HKOs without Choice Specs, It couldn't 2HKO Volkner's Luxray with Shadow Ball nor 1HKO Barry's Staraptor with Thunderbolt if you're not using Choice Specs.

E Tier. Just catch a Clefairy instead, I recall Cleffa failing to escape a wild Shellos bc its so slow, even with level advantage, and even with 140 Base Friendship at the start, it still barely reaching 2 small heart(200 Friendship) by Hearthome. You also need to Thief hunt for Moon Stone, which is only 5% on wild Clefairy asap, bc Clefairy really sucks when unevolved and the guaranteed Moon Stone is locked behind Surf. As a Clefable, all it does is pretty much a coverage-bot, which isn't that great if you asked me, especially with how slow Clefable is.

C/B Tier. I'm split between C and B on this one. Ralts and Kirlia are just really bad until L31 (yes, it evolves at 30, but you need to delay its evolution for one level to learn Psychic). As Gardevoir, its alright and it performs almost the same thing what I think Alazakam could do, except for one thing, and that speed stat. 80 Speed stat felt so middling in this game, getting outsped by a fair chunk of opponents, and it can disrupt Gardevoir from trying to Calm Mind its way.

B Tier. This one is weird moreso that comes very late and requires almost no grinding, Azelf isn't exactly bad, taking out a lot of mon in the late-game, except Flint and Cynthia( and maybe Lucian), but there was something that made me feel that it wasn't A Tier, and I couldn't exactly pinpoint what it is, but i'm fine with Azelf being in A Tier.
