DPPt In-Game Tier List Thread v2

I think wanting both return and rock polish is not bad at all by A tier standards. Kadabra wants grass knot and shadow ball. Gyarados wants dive, which is not a TM but is more expensive than many TMs. Azelf wants shadow ball, flamethrower, and psychic. Do you think return and rock polish are more expensive than the TMs that A tier things want? Aren't A tier things supposed to be bad for a chunk of the game, and things that aren't bad for such a chunk go in S tier? Kadabra is similarly bad against Team Galactic and worse against a few gym leaders, like Roark and Fantina. Giratina is bad against Bertha and Cynthia, which is a big chunk when you can use Giratina in only 6 or 7 major battles. I did consider Maylene. I just didn't mention her because I thought we all agreed that she's an easy win for Torterra. I already explained my results with Flint in page 4 of this thread. Both of us agree that Torterra can win battles by using curse and synthesis. However, you think these strategies are a lot more annoying than simply using the strongest attack move, and this should count against Torterra. I think being able to win with these strategies is a perfectly good reason to put Torterra in a higher tier. Is this a good enough summary of our disagreement? If yes, am I the only person who thinks we should be allowed to use 1/2 healing moves or use a stat boosting move more than twice in one battle?
I’m just gonna stop arguing at this point and say I agree to disagree, with all due respect to you sumwun. It’s just going to go in circles.

Thanks for addressing some of my points, I just think any further analyzing back-and-forth will be kind of splitting hairs.

I really should have posted this before Ryota finished his/her/their/its run with a Torterra. Better late than never, I guess. Anyways, this is what happened when I used a Torterra a few months ago. Now that at least 3 people have used Torterra and say it should be B tier, I think it's time to read Drumstick's, Moonlight's, and Ryota's logs and attempt to figure out why we got such different results.

Gardenia: I was able to get more consistent sweeps because I used return instead of bite. Because Gardenia's Turtwig wastes so many turns using reflect and sunny day, it's pretty easy to set up 4 to 6 curses and 2HKO her Turtwig before Grotle loses half of its HP. Additionally, giving Grotle an Oran berry lowers the chance of needing a super potion.

Jupiter: This is where return really matters. While her Skuntank resists both razor leaf and bite, Grotle's +2 return 3HKOs Skuntank. Zubat's wing attack is super effective, but it is still too weak to stop Grotle from setting up and sweeping.

Fantina: Rawst berry allows Grotle to set up on her Duskull. Yes her Mismagius can use confuse ray. Yes Grotle still needs luck to sweep. However, most other A tier things can just barely touch her Mismagius regardless of how lucky they get, so I still consider this a relatively good matchup for Grotle.

Rival (209): Even though wing attack is super effective, his Staravia still uses 2 or 3 double teams before attacking. Grotle can easily use curse during these turns, and wing attack is no longer a threat when Staravia actually starts using it. Grotle can continue cursing until return is a guaranteed OHKO, so endeavor isn't a problem either. Even if a teammate needs return more than Grotle does, Grotle can use secret power, which is still an upgrade over bite and also neutrally effective against Monferno.

Rival (Pastoria): Again, Torterra can use return to defeat Staravia without losing much of its own HP.

Wake: A Sitrus berry lets Torterra survive one ice fang from Floatzel, OHKO Floatzel with wood hammer, and survive the recoil. Of course, Torterra can then easily take out Quagsire. Similarly to Fantina, Wake is a difficult opponent even for A tier Pokemon. Being able to consistently defeat 2 of his Pokemon, including Floatzel, is a very strong performance.

Volkner: You don't need rock polish to sweep this one. Jolteon effectively can't touch Torterra, so Torterra can easily set up 6 curses and use synthesis to heal the tiny bit of damage from iron tail. Raichu gets to use one signal beam before earthquake OHKOs it. At +5 or +6 physical defense, Volkner's 2 physical attackers can't do much, so Torterra can heal itself again and continue sweeping.

Rival (League): Torterra can't solo, but it can still use curse and synthesis to defeat both Staraptor and Heracross.

Bertha: Whiscash is easy setup bait. Even when sandstorm is making synthesis less effective, it is still more than enough to heal all the damage that Bertha can do to a Torterra with +6 physical defense. Wood hammer recoil isn't an issue because earthquake OHKOs everything except Gliscor.

Flint: Torterra needs rock polish to completely sweep but can take out 3 Pokemon without rock polish.

Lucian: Bronzong does not force Torterra to switch out if Torterra uses swords dance, as +2 wood hammer is a 2HKO. Torterra outspeeds Bronzong and can use synthesis after taking some recoil from the first wood hammer. After Bronzong, Torterra can defeat either Alakazam or Gallade. It's not a solo, but taking out 4 of his Pokemon is still pretty good.

Although there were a bunch of things I did differently with my Torterra, return and synthesis are definitely the most important. Return makes Torterra better at sweeping Gardenia and a few rival battles and completely turns the tables against Jupiter, while synthesis lets Torterra very reliably solo Volkner and Bertha and also heal a lot of damage in the last rival battle and against Lucian. With synthesis, the second half of the game is not nearly as bad as Drumstick described it.

Another issue that all of Drumstick, Moonlight, and Ryota mentioned is 4MSS. According to my logs, this sequence of moves is already enough to sweep many of the major battles.
razor leaf -> wood hammer
bite -> earthquake
curse
return -> synthesis
There are only 3 times when Torterra really wants another move: Aaron (swords dance and stone edge), Flint (rock polish), and Lucian (either swords dance or rock polish). You could still argue that Torterra has the worse 4MSS compared to the A tier things that people aren't trying to drop, but they have other minor issues that Torterra doesn't have. Being affected by 4MSS in 3 battles just doesn't seem like a very big problem.

I hope this post was enough to show what I did differently and how that caused a stronger and more consistent performance from my Torterra. So what do you think? Are these valid strategies that Drumstick, Moonlight, and Ryota overlooked, or did I set my standards too low?

Additionally, there are some other recently proposed updates that were almost completely ignored. Is Ikazuchi going to make these updates or no?

Magnemite from C to B
Croagunk from D to C

Wurmple (Dustox) from E to D
Buneary from D to C
Nosepass from E to C

Rotom from C to B
I see +6, I write off a test. Straight up. Ain't nobody got time for that.

People have said in the past self-healing moves generally shouldn't be considered for in-game over items, and on top of that, Synthesis only has a grand total of 5 PP.
I see the point, but if we turn our noses at people using Full Restores, recovery moves inherently get more value. Not something you should spam, of course, but I'm not writing it off.

-Turtwig guzzles TMs like crazy. Even if they aren't particularly big ones, you want Return, Rock Polish, Razor Leaf, Wood Hammer, Earthquake. Bite / Crunch all throughout the game as moves, even if some are learned naturally.
Out of these, only Return and Polish are TMs...

Gyarados wants dive, which is not a TM but is more expensive than many TMs. Azelf wants shadow ball, flamethrower, and psychic. Definitely not, but the return ain't the same.

Realistically speaking, only Return is really contested, not a lot of things learn Polish and if you're picking 2 things that learn it, odds are you're stacking weaknesses and screwing up teambuilding in general.

There's nothing inherently wrong with using different ways to achieve the same objective.

However, it's safe to say that if you go over +2 with any boosting moves, of course performances will get inflated. Boosting Curse to +6 and healing for a sweep is something you save for dire Nuzlocke matchups, not general efficiency.

I'm not going to start taking points off things for not clicking the highest BP move available at all times, but overall, if you're not dealing damage for 2+ turns in a row, something ain't right.

My reaction in your native language:

You quoted me without reading carefully enough. It was worded weirdly but I literally acknowledged most of those moves were natural.

"-Turtwig guzzles TMs like crazy. Even if they aren't particularly big ones, you want Return, Rock Polish, Razor Leaf, Wood Hammer, Earthquake. Bite / Crunch all throughout the game as moves, even if some are learned naturally."

I hate beating a deader-than-dead horse after I said agree to disagree, but this is why Infernape excels where Torterra and Empoleon do not. Infernape you give it the Flamethrower TM and it is off to the races. The other starters use generally unorthodox TMs that become mostly useless the second they hit their final forms. Grass Knot for Empoleon is basically pointless aside from Wake specifically. Pluck, while uncontested, is fairly niche (really only helps with one and a half mons with Gardenia and Maylene). I don't see why I'd give Grotle Return when Skuntank can crit past a Curse Grotle anyway and Gardenia isn't difficult to find coverage for- you don't really use it when you get Wood Hammer and Earthquake. Polish I'll concede is generally useful, but I think using Swords Dance and Rock Polish on the same mon in any capacity is frankly ridiculous, even if only for one matchup.

I see the point, but if we turn our noses at people using Full Restores, recovery moves inherently get more value. Not something you should spam, of course, but I'm not writing it off.
I don't think we've ever turned our noses at using Full Restores and Hyper Potions and the like, the only time it raises eyebrows is when we do it more than once or twice.

DHR has decried self-healing moves in in-game lists:

He said it again in SM.

Even a moldy post from BW2 said strictly self-healing moves were inferior to items more or less, though Giga Drain and Leech Seed I agree can have some value, particularly the former:

Screen Shot 2021-11-14 at 10.03.23 PM.png

So yes. I don't understand why self-healing moves are suddenly viewed favorably over other attacking moves unless a Pokemon has room to run them due to a shallow movepool (see: Oricorio running Roost early on in USUM). And Torterra is already strapped for moveslots as it is.

Yeah, my point was that the information you said was incorrect. Turtwig does not guzzle TMs like crazy, and the ones it appreciates are nigh uncontested and only learned by Torterra anyway like Rock Polish.

I don't see why I'd give Grotle Return
Same reason you'd give it to anyone that isn't a Normal-type, a high BP neutral move. It's not the best user of it, but it's faaaar from the worst. Grass is not the best neutral type in the game, it makes sense that some people would give Return to their starter.

If that is the case, then this is fair, recovery moves are absolutely irrelevant.

It really depends on what one thinks about the usage of items mid-battle, and since that is subjective and there are no guidelines in this thread's rules about that, I'll leave it to the posters' discretion.

DHR has decried self-healing moves in in-game lists:
As everyone and their mother, including the fetus, know, I couldn't care less about what DHR has to say.

I think you should extrapolate on this more. I'm not sure where this relationship with me soured to be honest. You took a few digs as you vanished from the OI Server too, and I don't really understand where the animosity has come from. I'm all ears to find out what's happened dude.

People have been trying to help you complete this list, and while I get some of your counter points, you shouldn't just be throwing stuff out without even reading it or taking it on board. That's just part of Leadership.

I've had a few users contact me over your current attitude, and it doesn't look good to me. If you want to talk to me privately, you're more than welcome to.

I may have been a bit too harsh on a lot of people, including you tbh. So I apologize.

As for why I got a grudge against you, it was because of your moderation in the GSC thread. I believe we all know exactly what I'm talking about.

Now, despite the fact that Drums claimed that I didn't read his post, which is obviously not true, I'm just trying to bridge the gap here.
I got one guy telling me Torterra should be A because of +6 Curse sweeps which obviously aren't something that any IGTL thread would acknowledge. Then I got the other thread leaders basically running all sorts of zany schemes to get sweeps even though they're unintuitive. Some of these didn't make it to the thread, but I suppose the animosity remained. These lists are semi-casual, so I had to cater to that style of play.

Frankly, I've stated more than once that I failed to properly take care of this list as I should, and that I should be removed from it. I acknowledge that most of the friction and lack of leadership needed to get this ship sailing is my fault, especially because of how abrasive I am and how due to IRL things I don't have the time to get things right.

I've got no issue admitting that all the issues that this thread had are solely my fault alone.

Before things potentially get even worse, as most people in this thread can't see eye to eye, and there's clearly a lack of leadership, close this thread.

We're back! The other thread's ratings will be compiled, and the OP updated over the week.

I'll also review this thread and see how I can make things a bit smoother this time around.

All mons are up for discussion, there's nothing set in stone, so test whatever you'd like. As always, it's best to strive for clarity. Good information makes for better decisions, so people will be able to have more informed opinions if testers are clear about how they play the game.

Pokemon - Platinum Version (Europe)__5604.png

Tomorrow I will restart the Torterra/Lopunny/Dustox as Dustox/Probopass/Rotom/Glaceon run I never finished, as I don't think I have the file anymore. Also going to clean up some mistakes I made with that run, like giving Torterra the Giga Drain TM like 3 levels before it would have learned it naturally.

S-Tier. i’m going to nominate this mon to S Tier on account of its great performance throughout the game and while it does have some few bad matchups like Wake and Lucian, Chimchar is the closest thing to a S Tier for me as far as this game goes, but if the definition of S Tier is something related to a game-breaker mon, then i would argue Chimchar doesn’t fit into that criteria.

A Tier. Going back here after doing multiple run, this went to a interesting question “How much do you value sweeping boss fights in IGTL?”. Majority, if not, all of current C Tiers and even a couple of current B Tier mon I’ve tested so far only sweeps little to no boss fights at all and Staraptor is the same past Fantina; it doesn't sweep a lot of fight, but it wasn't by no means bad (potentially beating 3/4 of Volkner's team is not something I'd call bad). In this run, I immediately slapped Soothe Bell on Staravia by the time Cheryl gave it to me hoping to reach Max BP Return as soon as possible, and I managed to reached it right before I faced Barry in Pastoria(going through Wayward Cave and Route 212 may have helped too) and I was amazed by its insane power, and just to showcased it, somehow manages to 2HKO Wake's Gyarados on roll despite the Attack drop. As for Pluck, it is indeed incredible, but I don't want to focus and praised heavily on that and just completely ignored everything else, especially what Staraptor can actually do past Fantina, hence I'm not nomming S Tier on this mon just because it could Pluck through Gardenia, Jupiter and Fantina.

B Tier. Floatzel is only carried by being able to sweep Fantina, otherwise it is meh until Surf and I might even say C, it uses Crunch or other non-STAB move a lot because its main STAB is only a 40 BP Aqua Jet. I tried Rain Dance, but I don’t see any fights where Floatzel needs it nor it was useful. Could have been useful for Lucian if Mr. Mime didn’t 1HKO back, because it would allow it to outspeed Alakazam afterward, though reflect may caused issue.

+2 Dragon Claw 2HKOs Togekiss, the rest are 1HKOed by +2 Soft Sand Earthquake bar her own Garchomp, who outspeeds and KOs back with Earthquake after a Spiritomb Shadow Ball, so no Dragon Rush miss cheese. Come back later and set-up SD against Lucario or Roserade(Which seems likely to go next after her Garchomp since answers were mainly Ice-type or Water-type with Ice Beam) and Garchomp survives a hit from them after a Spiritomb Shadow Ball, and 1HKO them and Milotic. If you set-up on Roserade, you need luck around it not going for Energy Ball as you heal, otherwise Togekiss finishes you off. No luck needed if you set-up on Lucario. You need to heal to avoid Espeed KO

Needs 1 or 2 heal (and some luck) to beat 4-5, depending on who you set-up on
B Tier, with a chance of A Tier. The B Tier was mainly due to its pre-Garchomp phase, which was somewhat average at best, despite getting its great moves early on. As Garchomp, it is an absolute beast in the late-game, no doubt. It sweeps the entire Elite 4 (though Lucian is luck-reliant), and it can even potentially beat 5/6 of Cynthia’s team, which is quite impressive and this alone was what made me feel it might have a great potential to be in A Tier. Regarding rock-coverage, a Draco Plate-boosted Dragon Claw hit almost as hard as super-effective Rock Slide, and Rock Tomb is worthless compared to the more superior Dragon Rage and gets easily outclasssed by Dragon Claw afterwards

this went to a interesting question “How much do you value sweeping boss fights in IGTL?”.
That is an interesting question, especially considering how important Intimidate can be.

For example, Luxio vs. Mars 1. No one questions whether or not Luxio OHKOs it with Spark. But is burning Intimidate on the thing you OHKO anyway the best play? The way I see it, the team factor matters. If saving Intimidate for Purugly is better than sweeping, then that's the optimal play. I could give it points for that, especially since we know Zubat isn't a threat anyway. Let some other mon handle it.

There's an overfocus on whether or not mons can pull off sweeps that I don't find reasonable.

I can see a mon getting S-Tier for dealing with most of the actual problems of the game instead of pointless sweeps.

I had to reconsidered some placement I had on some mon, because If I were to rank mon based on sweeps, its gonna be difficult with how I felt using current C Tier mons and even some of the current B Tier mon.

Anyway, this is my second Platinum run with Turtwig, Golbat, Rotom, and Eevee(Jolteon)

C Tier. I made a post before talking about Crobat. Two things that came pretty badly here; horrible IVs and I neglected using Fly. Golbat starts off pretty solid in the early-game, and early Soothe Bell really helped it a lot, and just for documentation, mine got 2 small hearts(200 friendship) by Solaceon, so its just potentially 1 massage away from evolving it right on time for Maylene. 130 Speed is great in this game because mons with 100 Speed still find themselves getting outsped by some really speedy mons, especially in the late-game. Then, it falls off so quickly in mid to late game with Byron, Candice, and Volkner being poor matchups for it. Elite 4 performance wasn't exactly great either besides Aaron, and also because its offenses are middling. When I did this run, I don't like using two-turn move bar some few exceptions, but I truly regret not using Fly on Crobat, because those KO ranges with Pluck was so depressing, and I wasn't fond that I'm still stuck with that move by Victory Road. You really need Fly on this mon.

B Tier. Electric-typing is just odd, its not gonna help you sweep fights, but its useful to have into some of the difficult boss fights such as Wake, Distortion Cyrus and Cynthia. Also a good revenge killer too with that 130 Speed, i guess.

I've enjoyed killing time by reading these threads at school or work for a couple years now and want to give back. I've rolled Noctowl, Umbreon, Gliscor, and Mantine for Platinum. I have a few questions:
  • What is our policy for raising friendship evolutions? In my experience trying Budew, it's an unworkably slow process just leveling them up like any other Pokemon. How much extra work can we expect or encourage from readers? From my brief research, the best strategy seems to be leveling it up to 100 Friendship, then spamming X items against passive wild Pokemon to 200, then leveling up to 220. This sounds a bit onerous and expensive, but having Umbreon online by Wake if not Fantina sounds important for information completeness. I won't know the practicality of this approach for sure until I test.
  • Mantine is as endgame as you can get. Is it okay to have three main Pokemon for most of the run? That makes two Medium Fast and one Medium Slow, and I think I can keep their levels in check.
  • How do I approach the early-game before my first subject? Should I pick a specific starter to manipulate Barry's team?

Speaking from my experience with Espeon, thanks to the Friendship Checker app from Eterna, i can document at which point of the game I got a certain amount of friendship without going out of the way to do tedious stuff like boosting friendship via spamming X-item on wild nor walking in circles, They would get penalized if they did either of those two unless its close to evolving.

Anyway, gonna skip some of my run to reword my thoughts on them. This one is a 5th Platinum run with Magikarp, Abra (No Trade), Eevee (Leafeon), Magnemite, and Snover

C Tier. I used both wild one and Kazza here, and I'm gonna be honest here, both Kadabras are... horrendously bad , and I'm so disappointed considering I have high expectation that this mon will be great prior to doing this run. It hits hard? It's not that great when Kadabra just dies to everything, especially in the late-game, and it doesn't one shot a lot even with Kazza's +SpA Nature, and there are good amount of hardhitters in this game that certainly doesn't instantly die in one hit. Its overall performance into boss fight felt worse than some C Tiers, with a horrendous matchups such as Candice, Cyrus(HQ), Volkner and Flint, and its best matchup is... several Barry fights (granted I picked Turtwig in this run, so Barry has Infernape), and really, if Barry fights aren't counted, then I can't ever call Kadabra a B Tier mon at all. Let's not forget you have to drag an Abra 12 levels with no attacking move and no Exp Share, it was horrendous to grind, not to mentioned trying to get this mon to L24 to sweep Gardenia. Then, there's Kazza, which skips the grind phase, but it is unusable until you beat Gardenia, and it can't go above L30 until you beat Maylene, not to mentioned it has negative Speed Nature, and it really hampered it on some fights. Also, can someone test if Kadabra can 1v1 Fantina's Mismagius with SubDisable?

E Tier. Its supposedly great movepool is hampered by several flaws. Blizzard and Wood Hammer look great on paper, but they're horrible on routes, and it is truly annoying having to go back to pokecenter after almost every single fight because Abomasnow is either low on health due to Wood Hammer recoil or it ran out of Blizzard PP (This was made before Volt suggested me to run Ice Punch on this mon for route clearing). I ended up grinding up Snover all the way to L40 at the Iron Island with Riley, and those Defense IVs i got from the Graveler and Onix helped it somehow barely lived a Fire Fang from Volkner's Luxray and Bertha's Gliscor

Mantine is as endgame as you can get. Is it okay to have three main Pokemon for most of the run? That makes two Medium Fast and one Medium Slow, and I think I can keep their levels in check.

What is our policy for raising friendship evolutions? In my experience trying Budew, it's an unworkably slow process just leveling them up like any other Pokemon. How much extra work can we expect or encourage from readers? From my brief research, the best strategy seems to be leveling it up to 100 Friendship, then spamming X items against passive wild Pokemon to 200, then leveling up to 220. This sounds a bit onerous and expensive, but having Umbreon online by Wake if not Fantina sounds important for information completeness. I won't know the practicality of this approach for sure until I test.
It all depends on this.

In a way, and that applies to a lot of things when it comes to threads like this, think about an IGTL as a run you'd put on Youtube. If you wouldn't want to watch it, then it's probably too boring or impractical to bother with. Besides, by the time you get to Hearthome, you already have the Soothe Bell, it can't be that bad to get it to evolve before Wake.

Mantine is as endgame as you can get. Is it okay to have three main Pokemon for most of the run? That makes two Medium Fast and one Medium Slow, and I think I can keep their levels in check.
If you can keep their levels in check, I don't really mind, but if you wanna add another mon, you can too. 5 Mons + Bibarel is kind of the standard for Casual Plat anyway.

How do I approach the early-game before my first subject? Should I pick a specific starter to manipulate Barry's team?
Anything is fine. Just don't skip trainers to come back to them because that can distort results.

It's like I always say, whatever you do, just give us the most information possible on them so we can have informed opinions.

I haven't been able to process every bit of info, but hold on, where did that come from? +6 SpA? Did you spam Calm Mind like that? 3 or 4 heals?

Look, I'll be blunt. I really appreciate the tests, but this is the kind of thing you do in a dire Nuzlocke that you have little to no other options to beat the game.

As a general rule of thumb, +2 with no healing is the threshold of what's acceptable for a setup sweep.

I haven't been able to process every bit of info, but hold on, where did that come from? +6 SpA? Did you spam Calm Mind like that? 3 or 4 heals?
It was a very old run that I've saved. Infernape doesn't outright sweep here because her Garchomp is faster, the team order was Spiritomb, into Milotic, followed by Togekiss, then Garchomp after that, and blame her Togekiss for making me spam CM in that fight, I tried less CM usage here, and I think +5 SpA is also enough to KO Milotic and I didn't edit it, so that's my bad (i didn't test if +3 or +4 is also fine). Its mainly her Togekiss that I had to go out the way the set-up to +6 SpA in order to get a 1HKO on it, because Flamethrower didn't KO it at +5, and I recalled still getting picked off by it even with multiple CM boost. The 4th heal is only if Cynthia bring Roserade instead of Lucario after you beat her Garchomp with someone else, i recall unboosted Flamethrower not KOing it, which forces me to heal to not get picked off by Lucario.

C Tier. This one is odd, and I don't have much opinion on this mon besides its doesn't performed that differently compared to other Electrics, and Levitate didn't really help into Bertha. This mon's ranking might change because I'm initially split between C and B, but I'm going C Tier for now. I'll go back here at some point if I got a better opinion.
This looks like you only tested vanilla Rotom. I'm pretty sure it is still possible to get the Secret Key on original hardware via an exploit, so it's probably worth testing Rotom-A. The extra coverage move and higher stats matter a lot.

Leaf Storm allows Rotom-A to take out Wake's Quagsire much more cleanly and the extra bulk might also enable it to survive one of Floatzel's non-STAB Crunches. Overheat or Hydro Pump ensure at least two decently clean KOs on Byron. Hydro Pump, Blizzard, or Leaf Storm all ensure Rotom is able to something meaningful to Bertha. (Probably not sweeping due to lack of STAB, low PP and imperfect accuracy, but better than being walled.) Alternatively, Overheat could make for a cleaner Aaron and actual sweep (can't switch out moves at the E4).

Theoretically a bunch of matchup turnarounds right there. Possibly more. I'm working on 3 hours of sleep rn so might have missed some stuff lol.

Happened to stumble upon this post when I saw the notification people were posting in this thread again. I haven’t been particularly active with these, but I would like to make a few points about why we as a community probably shouldn’t test Pokémon only available through these fan server exploits or whatever we’d like to call them.

For starters, the exploits require access to an Internet connection, but more specifically, the Gen 4 “version” of this requires access to an unprotected network, something not everyone’s going to have access to, as opposed to the Gen 5 version which can work even if your Wi-Fi connection has a password or an encryption key. This is because the Gen 4 games are standard Nintendo DS games, instead of operating on the “DSi enhanced” system that can check for Nintendo WFC “access” even on your DSi or 3DS System Settings. But even if we assume all Forum-accessing thread readers have access to the Internet and the exploit itself, that doesn’t change my second point, that in which the single player campaign of 99 percent of Pokémon releases isn’t made with event distributions or special events in mind. Platinum’s Rotom is in a bit of grey area here since the base form is available naturally anyways and the alternate forms were no longer event exclusive as early as HGSS, but for most other events I would argue the player isn’t “meant” to play through the game with any event exclusive Pokémon save for “launch events” like XY Torchic or ORAS Beldum.

So, how do we handle this? I agree that testing Rotom-A separately could wield some interesting results, especially with the knowledge that Rotom’s special moves could be switched around depending on the matchup (for example, Overheat for the Steel Gym). How much better Rotom-A would be compared to vanilla Rotom is hard to say, because it does get a bit slower and it doesn’t yet have STAB on those special moves it’s so well known for in Gen 4. The extra bulk and the retained Ghost typing should make up for that more often than not, I would imagine. Ghost is a pretty solid Type to be in this region, even if it’s not at its peak yet like it would be starting in Gen 6. The only problematic matchups I can see for Rotom-A from the outside looking in would be Fantina because of Mismagius outspeeding, possibly Volkner depending on how strong your Ghost STAB is (doesn’t Luxray have Crunch though?), and the League matchups since you can’t change form while you’re in there. If I had to guess, Hydro Pump would probably be the best option for the Elite Four, provided you’re dealing with no STAB, 5 PP and 80% accuracy the whole time. With everything taken into account, I would advise testing vanilla Rotom and Rotom-A separately, but only if everyone in the thread is okay with that and a decision is made to support testing specific event exclusive content. Like I said, the fact that not everyone can access it is a major turn-off for me, and doing this could open up a whole Pandora’s Box about what events are and aren’t okay to test. This post ended up a lot longer than I thought it would, so if you read all of the way here, thanks. How’d I do? :)

How’d I do? :)
I haven't seen the exploit myself, but it does look like a better fit for the What If thread.

The implication that someone could own a copy of Platinum (read: possibly bought it for a stupid amount of money) while simultaneously not having access to the internet in some fashion is low-key ludicrous lol. The need for an unprotected network is a more legitimate concern, but that can apparently be covered by using a password-less hotspot from an Android phone. Or, you know, emulation with cheats.

And I'd argue that GF did in fact intend people to use the forms for normal gameplay. They changed Rotom's availability in Platinum to be super early instead of postgame so it can actually participate in the campaign, you access the ability to change forms in basically the same location almost immediately, and Rotom-A's stats and movepool are actually reasonably balanced (520 BST, only one bonus move at a time). And of course, all subsequent games not event locking the appliances.

Like I said, the fact that not everyone can access it is a major turn-off for me, and doing this could open up a whole Pandora’s Box about what events are and aren’t okay to test.
If you want to be super pedantic, overall accessibility has never stopped us from tiering trade evolutions. Not everyone can get them legit but they're often ranked anyway. iirc we also have the event Celebi that was made available in the VC version of Crystal ranked for GSC.

The main thing separating Rotom's forms from other events is that you can still catch it normally. I think that's a very notable distinction compared to things like the various Mystery Gift Mythicals. But I'm not the lead here and will just defer to their decision.

I am actually using a Rotom-A in a Platinum game right now. [For full clearance, along side Roselia/Staraptor/Empoleon/Machoke/Mothim - Currently grinding in Iron Island with Riley to gain some levels. Currently 40~ish]

I don't think there is much to worry about regarding the security of it. You set up the hotspot for less than 15 minutes in total. When I did this "spoof" I had to cycle through a number of event mons before I got the secret Key (and with an annoyingly low Wondercard Limit of 3 - which means you have to go into the game, pick up the events and then delete those keys and then get the next set of events). That was the longest part of it.

When you're done you just delete the settings off your phone and the DS and effectively the network vanishes. As far as I know, the Secret Key event is likely the only one which can actively change a mon. I very much doubt we're going to rate any of the "Event" mons (like Arceus etc), and the Secret Key event is probably worth a quick discussion over whether it would count or not. I do agree that the buffed stats make a lot of difference (I am running Rotom-Heat atm) and the extra firepower/bulk is great. I did use default Rotom back in the day and still felt it did okay though, so maybe some nostalgia goggles are talking.

Well, if you don't mind, can we add a tutorial to the OP so people have access to that resource? Then we could start counting the Rotom-Formes.

D Tier, with a chance of C Tier. I'm starting to lean more on D Tier after reviewing my logs on it, but i could see it in C. I made a brief explanation about this mon in the previous thread, and I would say it again. Just catch a Roselia, don't used Budew at all, sure its great into Roark, but its horrendously bad into Mars, Gardenia, and Jupiter, and not to mentioned its a friendship evo. Even with Soothe Bell, i don't even reach 2 small heart(200 friendship) by Hearthome, i had to walk like 10K Steps or something(i messed up on the pedometer here) for it to evolved there, and even if you tried to do that, the only thing Budew had was Growth, which doesn't even help you into Fantina. Roselia is bleh, its stuck with Giga Drain for so long with almost no coverage, and also evolves a bit late, and Sludge Bomb is also so late.

+2 Brick Break is close to 1HKOing Snorlax
+2 Nevermeltice Ice Punch 1HKOs Heracross
+2 Night Slash 1HKOs Floatzel and has a roll to 1HKO Rapidash. Floatzel didn't went for Aqua Jet after tanking a Torterra Earthquake

Weavile L50 @ Nevermeltice
Nevermeltice Ice Punch is close to 1HKOing Yanmega. Yanmega 1HKOs back. Weavile can't properly set-up Swords Dance here

Weavile L50-51 @ Nevermeltice
+4 Nevermeltice Ice Punch 1HKOs all. Weavile survives two Aqua Tail from Whiscash. Bertha sends out Hippowdon last.

Weavile L51
Fist Plate Brick Break puts Houndoom in red. Houndoom 1HKOs back

Weavile L52 @ Dread Plate
+6 Brick Break is close to 1HKOing Mr. Mime, the rest are 1HKOed by +6 Dread Plate Night Slash. You need Brick Break here as otherwise, Gallade lives a hit due to Reflect. +4 Dread Plate Night Slash doesn't KO Bronzong and it beats you. Alakazam outspeeds and 1HKOs back.
Espeon is 1HKOed by unboosted Dread Plate Night Slash if you skip Alakazam

Beats 4

Weavile L52-54 @ Dread Plate
+4 Dread Plate Night Slash has a roll to 1HKO Spiritomb and Milotic. Spiritomb almost 2HKOs back
+2 Brick Break is super close to 1HKOing Lucario
+2 Ice Punch 1HKOs Togekiss, Roserade, and Garchomp

The amount of healing here is dependent on whether or not Spiritomb will 2HKO you. You need 4 healing if Spiritomb 2HKOs you, otherwise you only need 2 healing if it doesn’t. If you can reliably 1HKO Spiritomb and Milotic at +4, then you only need 3 healing (or 1 healing if you avoid a 2HKO)
C Tier, with a chance of B Tier. The C Tier nomination is moreso having to hunt those Blue Shards for Ice Punch tutor is annoying. Don't catch a L35 Sneasel, because those don't have Faint Attack. Its good, though it comes late and it needs Swords Dance for like 7 fights, because its strongest move only had 75 or 70 BP.
