Dragon Ball Z Fandom Topics

I definitely agree with what you're saying AR but I just gotta point out that if Trunks hadn't shown up or his ship were a few minutes late Goku would've used Instant Transmission like he said he would. It is implied that this happens in the "original" timeline. Hope of the Universe is also great for quoting but all I can ever remember is something like "LIGHT OF THE UNIVERSE, NIGHTMARE TO YOU".

I know I'm a bit late to this discussion, but hey, here's my two cents. Dragon Ball Z was one of my favourite shows as a kid, and DBZ Abridged is one of the funniest things I've watched, ever.

Frieza was easily the best ending to the series, Goku turning Super Saiyan, but Cell was also very good, with Gohan. Nowadays though, I would've loved it if the show kept some of its early humour (as in wayyyyy back in Dragon Ball).

One thing Chou posted that nobody responded to, Gohan vs Buu. I've had this topic come up so many times before.... and its clearly Gohan. First of all we have to look at all Buu's transformations, which I'll do in chronological order.

First, there's Kid Buu, the ultimate warrior created by Bibidi to exact his vengeance on the Kais. After Buu absorbs the Southern Kaioshin, he becomes Buff/Ultra Buu, giving him an increase in power. Finally, before he's sealed up in his ball for years, he absorbs Dai Kaioshin, he becomes Majin Buu. Here's where many people seem to get confused. His power is once again increased, as is shown by his change of appearance, making him similar to Dai Kaioshin. As we all know, Buu's appearance is based on his main source of power. However, the influence of Dai Kaioshin, who's probably more pure hearted than Goku, calms him and changes his behaviour, becoming a very innocent character.

After being released, and Bee being shot, Majin Buu expels all his anger in a massive pink cloud, as we all do from time to time, which forms Evil Buu, which has taken the majority share of Majin Buu's power. At this point we have Evil Buu and Good Buu, one of whom is clearly superior. Once Evil Buu absorbs Good Buu (who is, a separate entity to the original released from the ball), he transforms into Super Buu.

So here is what we currently have:

Super Buu >= Majin Buu > Buff Buu > Kid Buu > Evil Buu > Good Buu

Super Buu has the same powers as Majin Buu, but with no calming influence. kid Buu being stronger than Evil Buu seems logical to me, but doesn't really enter much into this debate. After this, Buu starts absorbing Z warriors.

Gohan Buu > Gotenks Buu > Piccolo Buu > Super Buu >= Majin Buu > Ultra Buu > Kid Buu > Evil Buu > Good Buu.

Alright, now we have to look at the Z warrior's interactions with them. Goku states he thought he might have been able to defeat Majin Buu, but wanted to give the kids a chance. Later on, when Goku is fighting Kid Buu, he states that he would be able to defeat him if he could gather his full power, which he is unable to do, due to the strain it puts on his living body. However, Mystic Gohan is able to easily wipe the floor with Super Buu, a stronger version of Buu.

In my mind, it is pretty definitive that Mystic Gohan >>> Kid Buu.

Note: I think people get confused also, as Supreme Kai says he is the most dangerous Buu. This is not due to power however, it due to his pure evilness.

lol, since this has been bumped...

I followed DBZ as a kid... or at least tried to. My parents had a weird attitude toward "violent" shows and video games like DBZ. Sometimes they'd let us watch, but other times they were all up in our faces about watching violent media. Also the church I attended as a kid was rather unfriendly to anime. (As an aside, I'm still surprised that the very original Ocean dub kept the scene of a Saibaman falling apart after Vegeta blew it up...)

I don't know about in general, but I suspect that the main thing that makes Dragon Ball "so great" to the majority of North Americans is the many flaws that made it so-bad-it's-good. I generally don't consider Dragon Ball very good overall. Don't get me wrong, I like the series and I can talk about it, but I get that a lot of that is because I (and many, MANY people over the last few decades) grew up with some form of it. I wouldn't recommend it to very many people who aren't already into it. I'm also not downplaying its role in popularizing anime outside of Japan or inspiring modern shonen manga/anime. However, it's true that a product isn't good just because it started something big. In the Tales series, for example, most people seem to consider the original versions of the first two entries unplayable...

So I'm not going to enumerate the flaws of Dragon Ball, because there really are so many that one can pick out and different people put different values on those flaws. Considering what I just said, though, it's clear what my opinion is on the second point. The series wasn't successful in spite of its flaws; it was successful partially because of them. I definitely see the Abridged series as proof of this. People like making fun of the shitty plot, shittier script (don't even bother convincing me it's any good, maybe the Japanese version is blander, idk, but seriously), and even shittier voice acting. There are also YouTube channels like ImmaVegeta whose main purpose is to pick out Dragon Ball clips and titling/captioning them in humorous ways (though sometimes the clips speak for themselves).

Dragon Ball is basically an embodiment of the peacock.

Buu saga was just a shitty convoluted mess designed to make money by appealing to small boy's love of flashy power-ups with no rhyme, reason, or substance-- the series tremendous inconsistencies are also ridiculous.

I'm sorry, but that kind of applies to the entire series (including the "death is meaningless" part). Buu was just the worst about it (unless you count GT, which does this even worse). There are lots of good endings to the series, with arguably just as much closure to it as the Cell Arc's ending. Tournament 23 (with Goku fighting Piccolo Jr.) was a really good possible ending. But anyway, AT's notorious for not planning very far ahead, and because of this, what any one person thinks Dragon Ball is "about" is probably far from the truth. The series NEVER took itself seriously, which is probably another part of why it was so popular and "good". (Also we all know the series ended at Cell because of low ratings in Japan, and it's actually being continued into Buu anyway.)

As for the Buu Saga power comparison thing: from my recent reading of the Buu Arc, Gohan is definitely the strongest non-fused being.

Cell is the best arc, Buu is cool but Akira Toriyama didn't even want to write it...he was forced to. You can't really get mad at him for that.

This... is probably false. There is no indication that anyone compelled him to keep writing. Most of the rumors surrounding supposed intended endings are entirely false, or require huge stretches to believe given the evidence (and lack thereof). There was no apparent intention to end the series until it actually ended. (I guess you could argue Androids 19/20 but that's probably just an intention to end the arc, not the series.)

Also, Kai sucks for not including the good filler such as the car exams.

YES! The filler episodes get a lot of crap from being associated with the inter-episode padding but the filler episodes contain some of the best shit in the anime. The driving episode was great. Though fuck the Garlic Jr. filler arc <.<

Dragon Ball Z was one of my favorite shows growing up. I remember looking forward to watching it on Toonami every day. My parents didn't really like it because there was "too much yelling and screaming".

Anyway in response to Gohan vs Kid Buu, it's clearly Gohan. Goku stated that he could have beat Kid Buu while he was afraid to even attempt fighting Super Buu without fusion. Gohan wiped the floor with Super Buu so I think he is stronger by a good margin
