Exploud (Revamp)

QC: dodmen / nv / Kreme

[OVERVIEW]

Exploud might not seem very impressive at first glance, but it's blessed with a single move, Boomburst, that transforms it into a frightening wallbreaker. Boomburst is the sole reason Exploud ever sees the light of day in UU, and this is only amplified by its ability Scrappy, which lets Boomburst and Focus Blast hit Ghost-types, making Exploud very hard to switch into. Despite these positive traits, Exploud is plagued with a low Speed stat, which leaves it outpaced by common UU threats. Its relatively poor Speed also limits its wallbreaking potential, and its mediocre defensive typing leaves it liable to being easily revenge killed.

Moves
========

Boomburst is Exploud's most powerful STAB move with no drawbacks, and it should be used most of the time. Focus Blast gives Exploud perfect neutral coverage alongside Boomburst thanks to Scrappy and allows Exploud to hit Empoleon and Blissey for solid damage, the latter of which has to be severely weakened for it to be beaten. Fire Blast hits Bronzong, which would otherwise wall Exploud. Sleep Talk is a viable option if you'd like Exploud to work as a sleep absorber. Surf nails Mega Aerodactyl for solid damage, but it's worth noting that Boomburst still hits it very hard. Flamethrower is an option over Fire Blast if you prefer accuracy rather than power.

Set Details
========

Maximum Special Attack and Speed investment enables Exploud to hit as hard and fast as possible. Scrappy is the ability of choice, as it allows Exploud to hit Ghost-types with Boomburst and gives Exploud a niche over Porygon-Z, which otherwise outclasses it in all aspects. Choice Specs augments Exploud's power by a large degree and allows it to hit incredibly hard, an example of which is being able to 2HKO defensive Porygon2 after Stealth Rock. Timid is an option over Modest, as it allows Exploud to outrun Modest Nidoqueen and Modest Mega Blastoise, as well as slower offensive threats such as Crawdaunt. However, Exploud sorely misses the extra power, such as failing to easily 2HKO Porygon2 and OHKO most Nidoqueen variants.

Usage Tips
========

It's best to utilize Exploud as a hit-and-run attacker, as its subpar bulk reduces its staying power. This makes support through Volt Switch or U-turn optimal to get it in safely. Alternatively, it can be brought in after a teammate has fainted or through double switches. Boomburst should be used the majority of the time, as nothing likes to switch into it. Exploud's coverage options should only be used when absolutely necessary, such as when predicting an appropriate switch-in.

Team Options
========

U-turn and Volt Switch users, such as Gligar, Mienshao, Crobat, and Forretress, are all great partners, as they give Exploud switch initiative. Fighting-types such as Cobalion, Toxicroak, and Mienshao make for good partners as well because they can all beat Blissey. Mienshao in particular is a good teammate, as it can also provide U-turn support. Crobat and Gligar deserve special mention, as they can both take on Fighting-types and offer support in the form of U-turn and entry hazard removal. Galvantula provides both Volt Switch and Sticky Web support, which temporarily mitigates Exploud's Speed issues. That being said, Exploud appreciates all forms of speed control, which makes Whimsicott and Hoopa nice teammates, because the former gives Stun Spore support and the latter provides Trick Room. Fairy-, Flying-, and Psychic-types such as Gardevoir, Zapdos, and Alakazam are great teammates, as they can beat opposing Fighting-types. Gardevoir can also offer Healing Wish support, which gives Exploud a second chance to wallbreak. Finally, setup sweepers such as Salamence, Mega Swampert, and Cobalion all appreciate Exploud's wallbreaking ability.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

A mixed Life Orb set with Hammer Arm might seem plausible to break past Blissey, but with Exploud's fragility and low Speed, it finds itself worn down very easily, and sacrificing its overall effectiveness for a single threat isn't worth it. Work Up could be used so that Exploud may function as a stallbreaker, but it prefers the immediate power Choice Specs offers.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Blissey**: Blissey is the most reliable counter to Exploud, as it is never 2HKOed by Focus Blast and can heal off any damage Exploud inflicts upon it.

**Faster Threats**: Faster Pokemon like Salamence, Cobalion, Hydreigon, and Entei can all outspeed Exploud and KO it with their STAB moves.

Bronzong is a main target of Fire Blast.

Intro should say more than "faces competition"; Porygon-Z is better almost all of the time because of the reasons you listed.

You can say that Timid outspeeds some slower offensive threats like Crawdaunt, Modest Nidoqueen/Blastoise, Adamant Mega Swampert and stuff like that. Slashing Timid after Modest seems better actually.

Minor thing, but Mega Aerodactyl can't OHKO Exploud (Checks and Counters), so "beat 1v1" might be more appropriate. Or just use a different example.

Other than that, looks good, pretty straightforward stuff. QC 1/3!

[OVERVIEW]
+ Boomburst hits all non-resists extremely hard making it a frightening wallbreaker
+ Scappy Boomburst and access to Focus Blast gives Exploud perfect neutral coverage
+ Has a unique niche in being able to break past Sableye due to Scrappy.
- With 104 / 63 / 73 Defenses it's relatively frail.
- Base 68 Speed is very slow, leaving it outpaced by common metagame threats
- With its main draw being Boomburst, it's very predictable what it's going to do
- It faces competition from Porygon-Z, who is faster and has access to Agility, Nasty Plot, and can run a variety of sets besides Choice Specs.

I would mention its somewhat expansive movepool as a plus, allowing it to tailor itself to the team it happens to be on. I would also mention that while its base 68 Speed is slow, it acts similar to Hoopa in that it can outspeed most walls forcing the opponent to have a faster switch-in for Boomburst. Expand on the Porygon-Z note by saying outclasses it bar Scrappy.

Moves

  • Boomburst is Exploud's most powerful STAB that is accurate and has no drawbacks.
  • Focus Blast hits Blissey and Empoleon, but the former has to be severely weakened to be picked off.
  • Fire Blast roasts Steel-types such as Forretress and Cobalion who resist Boomburst.
  • Flamethrower could be used if accuracy is preferred over power, but it doesn't hit as hard as Fire Blast.
  • Surf hits Mega Aerodactyl hard and accurately, but Focus Blast and resisted Boomburst still hit it hard enough
  • Sleep Talk is an option if you'd like for Exploud to absorb Sleep
I would specifically mention that while it has access to its decent coverage options, Boomburst and Focus Blast are normally "enough". By this, I mean Fire Blast can roast Steel-types, but Focus Blast does that albeit with less accuracy so explain Fire Blast is a more accurate means of hitting them. Also Bronzong is a specific target of Fire Blast so mention that first over Cobalion and Forretress.

Set Details
========
  • Max Special Attack investment allows Exploud to hit as hard as possible.
  • Max Speed allows Exploud to attack as fast as possible
  • Scrappy is its best ability as it allows it to hit Ghost-types with Boomburst and gives it its niche over Porygon-Z
  • Timid seems ideal, but you don't outrun anything crucial and you miss out on some power.
  • Choice Specs powers up Exploud's attack by a large degree and allows it to hit as hard as possible
Usage Tips
========
  • Use Volt Switch and U-Turn support to bring it into play due to its subpar bulk
  • It should be used as a hit and run attacker due to its low bulk and speed.
  • Alternatively it can be brought in after another teammate has been eliminated
  • Boomburst should be used most of the time as it hits even resisted switch-ins hard
  • It's coverage moves should only be used when absolutely necessary, such as predicting switch-ins to it.
Team Options
========
  • U-Turn and Volt Switch users such as Mienshao, Crobat, Rotom-C, Mega Beedrill, and Whimsicott are great teammates as they provide switch-in opportunities for Exploud.
  • Fighting-types such as Lucario, Cobalion, and Mienshao are good partners as they can all take on Blissey, it's most reliable counter
  • Mienshao in particular is a good teammate as it breaks past Blissey and provide U-Turn support. Exploud in return beats Sableye.
  • Crobat and Whimsicott deserve special mention as they both can take on Fighting-types and provide U-Turn support. Whimsicott in particular can provide free turns through Encore.
  • Galvantula provides Volt Switch and Sticky Webs support to offer switch in opportunities and temporarily relieves it's Speed issues.
  • Florges, Gardevoir, and other Fairy-types can beat Fighting-types, while Gardevoir specifically can offer Healing Wish support to give it a second chance to wallbreak
  • Setup sweepers like Salamence, Cobalion, and Mega Swampert all appreciate Exploud's wallbreaking ability
I would mention specifically slow Volt Switch and U-turn users as they can definitely bring Exploud more safely than faster users.

**Blissey**: Blissey is the most reliable counter to Exploud, as it is never 2HKOed by Focus Blast and can heal off any damage from it.

**Fighting-types**: Faster Fighting-types such as Cobalion, Infernape, and Toxicroak can all OHKO with their STAB moves. It's worth noting that none of them can safely switch-in.

**Faster Threats**: Faster Pokemon like Salamence, Mega Aerodactyl, Hydreigon, Entei, can all outspeed and KO Exploud with their STAB moves.
Comments are in bold. What a really nice start! QC 2/3.

I think in the Overview somewhere with the negatives near "subpar bulk" you could mention how it also has a mediocre defensive typing which adds on to it. I don't think its poor bulk exactly affects its wallbreaking potential, which should only be affected by its offensive stats, so I'd just swap bulk with Speed in this case. Also, be sure to go through the grammar again before you send this into GP, "it's bulk" should be "its bulk" for example. "It's" = "it is".

For the set, considering Surf's use is extremely minimal, couldn't we slash it alongside Sleep Talk with Sleep Talk as the main slash? I'd rather have Sleep Talk to act as Sleep fodder as opposed to being able to OHKO Mega Aero while being locked into an otherwise subpar move most of the time but maybe that's just me, will leave this open for other QC to comment on if they want to do as such. Also if you're implementing this I'd definitely mention this prior to Surf to follow set order.

OK for Team Options I definitely think mentioning speed control Pokemon or something along those lines (wording could be better for this) definitely needs to be there, like paralysis spreads, Sticky Web setters, Trick Room setters, all of which make Exploud have an easier time wallbreaking. I also noticed Fairy-types were mentioned as being able to take on Fighting-types, but why do they have a specific mention over other types that hit Fighting-types for s/e damage and resist their STAB? If there's no specific mention you should just mention all of these said types then, i.e Flying- and Psychic-types as well.

So for C&C I'm not entirely sure Fighting-types should even get a mention here considering they all fall under the "Faster threats" category but again I'll leave this open for other QC input.

Aside from that tagging dodmen and nv to see their thoughts on the stuff. If there's no issue with having those changes then consider this 3/3.

went ahead and implemented Kreme's check since they're very valid points, and I'm sure dodem and nv would agree.

Kreme hit my main two suggestions: slashing Sleep Talk with Surf and spending a bit more on the mentions of speed control (and specifically Trick Room). Also might be worth mentioning when bringing up Focus Blast that Normal + Fighting has perfect coverage alongside Scrappy.

However, Exploud sorely misses the extra power, such as failing to easily 2HKO Porygon2 and OHKO most Nidoqueen variants.

Usage Tips
========

That being said, Exploud's coverage options should only be used when absolutely necessary, such as when predicting an appropriate switch-in.

Team Options
========

U-turn and Volt Switch users, such as Forretress, Gligar, Mienshao, and Crobat, and Forretress, (AC) are all great partners, (AC) as they give Exploud switch initiative. Fighting-types such as Cobalion, Toxicroak, and Mienshao make for good partners as well because they can all beat Blissey. Mienshao in particular is a good teammate, (AC) as it can also provide U-turn support. Crobat and Gligar deserve special mention, (AC) as they can both take on Fighting-types and offer support in the form of U-turn and entry hazard removal. Fairy-, Flying-, and Psychic-types such as Gardevoir, Zapdos, and Alakazam are great teammates, (AC) as they can beat opposing Fighting-types. Gardevoir can also offer Healing Wish support, which gives Exploud a second chance to wallbreak. Finally, setup sweepers such as Salamence, Mega Swampert, and Cobalion all appreciate Exploud's wallbreaking ability.

Other Options
=============

A mixed Life Orb set with Hammer Arm might seem plausible to break past Blissey, but with Exploud's fragility and low Speed, it finds itself worn down very easily, (AC) and sacrificing its overall effectiveness for a single threat isn't worth it. Work Up could be used so that Exploud may function as a stallbreaker, but it prefers the immediate power Choice Specs offers.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Blissey**: Blissey is the most reliable counter to Exploud, as it is never 2HKOed by Focus Blast and can heal off any damage Exploud inflicts upon it.

**Faster Threats**: Faster Pokemon like Salamence, Cobalion, Hydreigon, and Entei can all outspeed Exploud and KO Exploud it with their STAB moves.
