Gastrodon (Memento)

Gastrodon learns Earth Power, I strongly suggest replacing it over Earthquake and making the sole nature Calm. Not to mention that Gastrodon's Special Attack is greater than its Attack.

Thanks Komodo, I've made the changes. Also, I've changed the set name to 'It's a Trap!' as per Bluewind and Oglemi's wishes.

Gastrodon's SpA being higher than it's Atk is a non-factor here because, taking into account the higher BP of Earthquake, Earthquake will always deal more damage than Earth Power on an opponent of equal defenses (Toxicroak, for example).

Earthquake also hits most Fire types and Electric types much harder on account of their traditionally low physical defense (think Houndoom, Lanturn, Magmortar etc). Earth Power could be used to hit most Rock types/Steelix harder but, tbh, if you want to do that then just use Surf.

I could add it as an option but it would risk cluttering the fourth slot and I'm not sure it really does anything that Earthquake doesn't do just as well, if not better.

admiral, we have sea slug pokemon in sector 47!

[SET]
name: It's a Trap!
move 1: Block
move 2: Yawn
move 3: Memento
move 4: Earthquake / Surf / Ice Beam / Waterfall
nature: Careful / Calm
item: Rindo Berry / Lum Berry
ability: Sticky Hold
evs: 252 HP / 212 Def / 44 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

This set capitalizes on Gastrodon's unique access to Block, Yawn, and Memento to allow one completely free turn for a teammate to set up, making it a perfect support Pokemon for sweepers such as Linoone and Charizard. The idea is to use Block as the opponent switches out of Gastrodon, then absorb the incoming hit (Rindo Berry will allow it to survive all but the most powerful of Grass-type attacks) and use Yawn. From here, Gastrodon should use Memento to ensure that your next Pokemon gets in for free, just as the opposing -2 Atk / -2 SpA Pokemon falls asleep due to from Yawn. The final moveslot is primarily to break for breaking Substitutes which can be quite annoying for this strategy, it also ensures that Gastrodon is not helpless against Taunt.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Obviously This Gastrodon obviously needs a very specific kind of teammate - namely one that can take that one free turn and use it to cause as much damage as possible. With that in mind, Linoone is the ideal partner because, as thanks to the combination of Belly Drum, ExtremeSpeed, and Gluttony, Linoone can arguably accomplish more in a single turn than any other Pokemon in UU. Charizard is also an option as it can use the free turn to set up a Substitute and, on the following turn, use Belly Drum to activate its Salac Berry.

Since any team using this Gastrodon will ultimately be relying on it (and the subsequent sweeper) to secure victory, it's important to be aware of the threats that might thwart Gastrodon's set-up attempts. Substitute has already been mentioned as a potential thorn in Gastrodon's the side, so be aware of that extra cautious when a common Substitute user such as Mismagius switches in. In this situation, Gastrodon can either use its attack to break the Substitute, or predict the initial switch-in and use Yawn instead of Block to force it back out again. Explosion is also a huge concern, as not only will it deal hefty damage to Gastrodon, but it will also cause the opposing Pokemon to faint, preventing you from getting that crucial free turn. It is also vital that, when using this set, you scout the opposing team well for Lum Berry users, as they can absorb the Yawn and make Gastrodon's sacrifice a lot less effective.

Umm in the analysis doesn't explain the which attack move [Earthquake / Surf / Ice Beam / Waterfall] helps against what Pokemon, perhaps you could add a sentence or two on that?

This. I overlooked it when I QCed it because I thought of Quagsire's better Attack, but Gastrodon should have Earth Power. An AC mention of Earthquake for Calm Mind users should be enough, even more because you already have Waterfall slashed there for Mismagius. Keep the slash of the alternative nature though, because Waterfall is still getting a mention.

Shut up fate.
