Gengar Discussion

I woud take a STABed sludge bomb over will-o, Shadow ball seems like a good choice, and I guess Focusbomb to hit what you can't, and possibly thunderbolt or hp ice. I think hypnosis should get a nod though too.

EDIT: ASSGar(tm) with hypnosis and focus bomb could really screw up weavile

ASGar is not all that common or effective for that matter on Wi-Fi. i've seen maybe 20 or so different ones, and none have carried Hidden Power, which is close to a must.

the common AS set is Hypnosis/Shadow Ball/Thunderbolt and then the bomb (either Sludge, Focus, or Explosion)

394 SATK Gengar does 224~264 damage to minimum Sdef Blissey with focus bomb.
I don't think that's a 2hko. Maybe my calculations are wrong.

So i'm guessing Genger deals with Bliss by using Focus Bomb? Is Focus Punch still going to be used?

A modest max SpA Gengar (394 SpA) with Choice Glasses does around 47%~55% damage to Max HP, min SpD Blissey (standard) with Focus Bomb.

But since Gengar is likely to use Timid as its nature, a 359 SpA does 43%~50% to the same Blissey (Still with Choice Glasses)

So it ain't a reliable counter because of accuracy and of the Calm Minded Blisseys (that really rule!)

I'd like to try out CS Gengar.

Gengar@ Choice Glasses
Trait:Levitate
EVs:252/SpA 252/Spd 6/HP
Modest nature
- Energy Ball
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball
- Thunderbolt

Hurts. A lot.

I'd go with 285 to outrun Choice Scarf Medicham. Also outruns Adamant Lucario, so Gengar can finish off the EndRev set if need be.

Don't use Ice Punch. Only Focus Punch and Explosion are viable physical moves on Gengar, in DP at least.

AG Gengar needs a mention.

Gengar @ AG
Levitate
Timid Nature, 252 SpAtk, 252 Speed, 4 HP

~ Sludge Bomb
~ Shadow Ball
~ Thunderbolt
~ Hidden Power Ice

This is walled by nothing that I can think of. It can switch on three immunities and fire away on one of your moves. I'm sure even Bronzong and Metagross would hate dealing with an AGed, STABbed Shadow Ball.

There's also Perish Trapper Gengar, but which, in my opinion, now gets overshadowed by Mismagius in that regard.

Walled by Jibacoil, and the Dragon/Steel in Ubers. (And Blissey).

Pros:

* versatility.
* ground/fighting/toxic immunity.
* 70% hypnosis

Cons:

* too slow?! importantly slower than Weavile and Azelf.
* STAB attacks are walled by common types: steel, rock and Blissey.
* weak to pursuit.

Moveset:

Gengar
levitate
~ Hasty/mild @focus strip
Shadow ball
HPfighting
Hypnosis
Explosion

Gengar lead that survives Weavile/Azelf and OHKOs in return. Few people are going to run Weavile with sandstream so you will often be safe on 1HP. Use hypnosis on the new pokemon or explode in its face.

Verdict:

I said a long long time ago that Gengar would lose a lot of value because of physical pursuit, along with Kazam... and it continues to look that way. It doesn't hit very hard without choice glasses, and often doesn't hit at all without choice scarf. You need to be a little bit creative with its moveset and use, otherwise you are better off looking elsewhere.

Substitute + Focus Punch gengar isnt looking like a joke no more...
it gets rid of weavle, and blissey cant do much vs it.

Here's what I plan to run as a starter:

Gengar @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP/252 Sp.Atk/252 Speed
Modest Nature (+SpAtk, - Atk)
-Energy Ball
-Thunderbolt
-Shadow Ball
-Hypnosis

Energy Ball for Swampert, Hippowdon (both starting to becoming a popular Stealth Rock leads), and any Rhyperior leads (or a switch-in on a predicted Earthquake). Thunderbolt for Gyarados and Skarm. Shadow Ball for sexy STAB to hit mostly anything else. And Hypnosis for w/e I can't handle offensively + general annoyance.

Do you think destiny bond can make a come back? I remember back in GSC destiny bond/counter/thunderbolt/ice punch is pretty popular. Since nowadays people do not expect destiny bond on gengar anymore. I think it can surprise your opponent sometimes. What do you guys think?

Explosion is pretty much used over it. Gengar is still a force to be reckoned with despite azelf and weavile running around. AS gar is mainly used because of the fast hypnosis.

For a powerful STAB attack that isn't resisted by incoming dark-types (rather, it's immune to by incoming steel types).

There are several Pokemon, I think, that Gengar can't score a OHKO against with its other moves (either believe Shadow Ball is resisted or otherwise). You really have to choose between power and coverage.

Sorry for my ignorance, but is AS = choice scarf and AG = choice specs?

what about counter (from RSE)? will it be good on gengar if it has max defence?

Yes. Those were it's Japanese acronyms prior to the revelation about their English names.

Its a bit of a novelty option when you can consider what Gengar can do. Although I could see a handful of lead Gengars getting a run from Counter and some Def EVs to mess up Weavile/other Pursuit-ers, maybe follow it with an Explosion.

Shadow Ball/Focus Bomb makes Sludge Bomb pretty pointless. You'll get extra damage on... Meganium? Bleah.

I'm probably in the minority, but I'm not the most fervent advocate of Focus Bomb on Gengar. Sure, it kills Weaviles, but sometimes it doesn't. Against Pursuit Metagross, pray.

that's why I think counter + destiny bond can bring an element of surprise once again if weavile, metagross and other pursuiters become gengar's major threats. :) Should be fun once in awhile.
