Hippowdon

[Overview]

While it may seem that Hippowdon is statistically inferior to many Ubers, it has certain qualities that allows it to set it apart from the pack. Its great physical bulk and pure Ground typing make it a sturdy physical wall, and while it may appear outclassed by Groudon, the hippo has some very distinct advantages over the land titan. Firstly, Hippowdon has access to reliable instant recovery, something that Groudon would kill to get. Also, unlike Groudon and Ground Arceus, Hippowdon has the rare Sand Stream ability, which allows it to support its team in a unique way, and can open up some very interesting team options. Play Hippowdon to its advantages, and it will likely be an excellent addition to your team.

[SET]
name: Uber Physical Wall
move 1: Slack Off
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Roar
move 4: Toxic / Stealth Rock / Ice Fang
item: Leftovers
nature: Impish
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

Hippowdon's good physical bulk and access to instant recovery make it an excellent physical wall. It can easily take hits from physical attackers such as Ho-Oh, Choice Scarf Zekrom (watch out for mixed sets), Groudon, Normal Arceus, and Excadrill. It is also a reliable Sand Stream user that can come in repeatedly to set up sandstorm, something that a stall team can use without having to run Groudon, if sunny weather is not to your fancy. Slack Off is obviously the main attraction of this set, allowing Hippowdon to take hits repeatedly and heal off the damage. Earthquake is Hippowdon's reliable STAB move, and Roar allows it to force out dangerous enemies such as Ho-Oh and Normal Arceus. Toxic is preferred in the last spot to defeat last-Pokemon Normal Arceus, which would otherwise set up Swords Dance without fear of being forced out. Stealth Rock is a solid support option due to Hippowdon's good physical bulk, while Ice Fang can be used to score surprise KOs on Garchomp and Rayquaza.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EVs used maximize physical bulk and allow Hippowdon to avoid being 2HKOed by Ho-Oh's Life Orb-boosted Brave Bird; it can then simply recover off the damage. A specially defensive spread of 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD with a Careful nature gives Hippowdon mixed defenses rivaling those of max HP Ground Arceus while further enjoying Leftovers recovery; this allows Hippowdon to take hits such as Draco Meteor from Giratina-O. However, the loss of physical bulk would mean that Hippowdon can no longer wall strong physical attacks from Ho-Oh and friends as easily. Hippowdon can also run Stone Edge in the last slot to deal huge damage to Ho-Oh, but between Stealth Rock, Roar, and Slack Off, Ho-Oh is not getting past Hippowdon easily anyway.

Hippowdon's main weakness is its lackluster Special Defense. Powerful attacks such as Draco Meteor from most Uber Dragon-types, and in particular Water-, Ice-, and Grass-type attacks will send Hippowdon blasting off like Team Rocket. Blissey is an excellent teammate for soaking up special attacks, as is Latias for Water- and Grass-type attacks. Gastrodon pairs well with Hippowdon too, as it is one of the best Kyogre counters out there. Rock Arceus can take advantage of the sandstorm's boost to its Special Defense to better sponge attacks such as Draco Meteor and set up Calm Mind. Ferrothorn resists most of Hippowdon's weaknesses and set up entry hazards as well. Lugia is also a great defensive partner that can wall mixed Dialga and synergizes very well with Hippowdon overall. Offensive partners to Hippowdon are essentially those that benefit from sandstorm. Excadrill, Garchomp, Landorus, and Rock Arceus all appreciate Sand Stream support, and Hippowdon can easily switch into and wall Groudon, which gives them trouble. Ho-Oh is also a fantastic offensive partner to use alongside Hippowdon, as it can lure in Kyogre and severely damage it with Brave Bird, while also easily defeating Pokemon such as Grass Arceus.

[Other Options]

Hippowdon has the option of running a Curse set, but given the specially offensive nature of the Uber metagame, it will be taken down way too easily. The same goes for a Stockpile set. Yawn can be used to force switches, but Roar is much better, as it is not blocked by Substitute. Fire Fang can be used to hit Ferrothorn for decent damage, and discouraging it from setting up hazards with impunity.

[Checks and Counters]

Hippowdon is countered by anything that is not weak to Earthquake and has access to reasonably strong special attacks. Kyogre is especially problematic because it wipes out sandstorm and drowns virtually everything that it touches. Any Uber Dragon-type will take down Hippowdon with a Life Orb- or Choice Specs-boosted Draco Meteor. Physically defensive entry hazard users such as Ferrothorn, Forretress, and Skarmory can also use Hippowdon as setup fodder. Skarmory is particularly problematic because there is absolutely nothing Hippowdon can do to it, while Skarmory can shut down Hippowdon completely with Taunt.

[Dream World]

Hippowdon receives Sand Force from the Dream World. While it may seem like a useless ability on Hippowdon unless you run Tyranitar along with it, the ability to run something that's not Sand Stream is precious. With a relatively "inert" ability, Hippowdon can see use on teams based on other types of weather (apart from sun, where it faces huge competition from Groudon). In particular, it can replace Ground Arceus on rain teams, freeing up a slot for another Arceus variant.

Skeleton is done. I'm still a bit unsure on what the best EV spread is, and would appreciate it if there were suggestions on this.

QC APPROVED (1/2)

I actually used Hippowdon quite a bit since last time, and I must say it deserves an analysis for Ubers. Slack Off is a pretty BIG advantage, it allows Hippowdon to stall out things like CB Terrakion without switching out. Hippowdon also brings sand instead of sun which can be a good thing for stall teams to wear out opponents faster, also Hippowdon can sort of wall Ho-Oh/Blaziken/Scarf Victini to an extend, something Groudon just can't do.

Lugia is a great partner from what I tried, it forms a pretty tough defensive combination for opponents to break as Hippowdon is immune to Electric-type attacks while Lugia can wall things like Mixed Dialga who might attempt to OHKO Hippowdon with Draco Meteor. Blissey is one of the best partners even in Ubers and it has Leftovers to cancel out sand damage.

Specially Defensive Hippowdon can actually survive a Specs Draco Meteor from Timid Palkia so that's amazing. With Careful max SpD spread, Hippowdon walls Support Dialga and Giratina-O without much problem, add to the fact Dialga cannot 2HKO Hippowdon with Fire Blast due to sand weather instead of sun.

Giratina walls Hippowdon and threatens you with burn, outphazes Hippowdon as well. You should mention the sand Hippowdon brings make SubCM Giratina-O die faster if it tries to sub, allowing stall to deal with Giratina-O better. Hippowdon can take on physical Rayquaza as well, +1 Outrage does not come close to an OHKO. Grass Arceus and Shaymin-S will OHKO you, Ice Fang 2HKOes Shaymin-S though.

Oh yeah Hippowdon walls Groudon not the other way round. Hippowdon gets recovery so it can wear out Groudon with repeated Earthquakes. Keeping sand reliably is always cool with Hippowdon because it doesn't fear Groudon, it also safely checks RP Groudon, LO Earthquake does not 2HKO. Groudon can't really counter RP Groudon as Earthquake will likely 3HKO, Hippowdon can come in on anything and keep slacking off till Groudon dies to recoil.

Other QC members should post their opinions on Hippowdon, because most people thought Hippowdon is not fit for Ubers.

Allow me to just mention a few things first:

You need to be careful about switching in on Ho-Oh. A Sacred Fire burn will cripple Hippowdon and thus it will probably lose one on one, and Ho-Oh isn't directly threatened by anything except Toxic. Also, I would mention Stone Edge in the AC instead of just OO - it allows you to fight Ho-Oh if Stealth Rock isn't up while still 2HKOing Rayquaza. Garchomp will be hard pressed to break Hippowdon anyway.

Furthermore, Blaziken does 79.5% - 93.8% to Hippo with a +2 LO Jolly HJK (Adamant OHKOes after 1 layer of Spikes), so be careful about trying to switch it in.

I don't even think Whirlwind is worth a mention lol, no Soundproof Pokemon is used in Ubers, much less getting past Hippowdon.

Also be wary of mixed Zekrom as Draco Meteor will destroy Hippowdon even worse than Groudon.

That said, Hippowdon is cool, reliable recovery is a huge advantage over Groudon and Sand Stream allows unique opprotunities to use things like Excadrill on Uber stall teams.

One last nitpick: Ferrothorn doesn't resist Ice. ;)

Thanks for the quick approvals, trickroom and Fireburn, I should be able to get this done by the end of next week at worst.

This is written and ready for GP checks. Sorry for the delay, I was distracted by various other fun activities this week =D.

GP 1 / 2

Maybe more mention of it going well as a lead (breaks sashes) and stockpile anyone?

About the first part of your question, nothing really uses Focus Sash nowadays. The only Pokemon in the first twenty Ubers by usage which even thinks about using a Focus Sash is Deoxys-A, which is anyway not too popular. Therefore i dont think the breaking sashes bit is of any use but it still works as a Lead. Also I think Stockpile does deserves a mention in OO.

Thanks for the GP check Calm Pokemaster, all changes editted in. I've also added a sentence about Stockpile.

Just two small things -

...Hippowdon has the option of running a Curse set, but given the special attacking nature of the Uber metagame, Hippowdon it will be taken down way too easily. A Stockpile set is in a similar vein The same goes for Stockpile sets.....

a hippo is here bringing down the sand
rocking a Zek with its stupid Choice Band

add etc.

-note that using "while" in some places (Earthquake is Hippowdon's reliable STAB move, while and Roar allows it to force out dangerous enemies such as Ho-Oh and Normal Arceus.) makes it seem like you would be choosing one or the other, when in reality both are on the set.

Okay I haven't actually tested Stockpile Hippo this gen, but I'm not sure you should just dismiss it to other options. I did try it last gen with a Specially Defensive spread, and fyi I remember not even stuff like Specs Dialga being able to break through it after one Stockpile (Draco Meteor does 58.8% - 69.5% to +1 Hippo, so if you slack off on the Draco, you win unless it crits you later)! The biggest issue though was that stuff with Toxic beat the crap out it (like Blissey), and of course, Kyogre mauled it. However, when I used it on a stall team last gen, it was pretty nice vs offensive teams as long as I had Tspikes up and took care of mono CM Kyogre. I'll test it myself later when I have spare time, but I would like it if you tested it too!

I used to play Stockpile Hippo on an OU team in Gen IV, but it was pretty bad. I can't imagine it doing too well in Ubers given Kyogre being everywhere, but it's worth a try.

Lol, I didn't even realise that V0x had GP checked this ages ago. About Stockpile Hippo, I gave it a try, but with Kyogre, Ferrothorn and Toxic everywhere, it's not operating very well at all without a truckload of support, so I think an OO mention should suffice.

V0x and sirndpt's checks have been implemented, this is now done.
