Hurricane Irene

So I am in Long Island and I personally don't know what to think of this. I never experience a Hurricane before but all the people I talk to say it's not bad. On the other hand, I don't want to lose my internet :nerd:. If someone can tell me what a Rank 3 is like please describe in full detail. But right now I think we just need to find out who to sacrifice to calm the hurricane. I am sorry for anyone who had anything or anyone that was killed by this Hurricane. EDIT: Oh, and mods can lock this once the Hurricane blows over.

as a person who has experienced from tiny to immense hurricanes, i can tell you that if you prepare well youll most likely be alright

also i felt like you about the lights going out and shit, but it ends up its a pretty good time to have fun with your family by playing random board games!

im in nyc, just take some precaution against heavy winds, obviously dont go inside, get tons of water and food so that in case electricity does go out you're okay. not much you can really do other than prepare well and weather the storm.

Fellow Long Islander here. Last time an actual hurricane made landfall on our little island, I had not completely mastered bowel control (1991), so it should be interesting to see. Granted, it's supposed to be downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it hits us, but I'm still expecting plenty of rain and wind. Plus a possible hurricane party at work if no customers come in.

Also, between this and the earthquake I'd almost say the planet's trying to punish us for Jersey Shore.

Ironically enough, my current meteorology professor stated in class today that Long Island would be the last place he would want to be during a hurricane.

I live in the Midwest, so we don't really experience hurricanes here of course, but here is some useful information about Irene: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at4+shtml/032240.shtml?hwind120?large#contents

While Irene is likely to hit Category 4 strength, it is people in the Carolinas that should be worrying, as Irene will likely weaken by the time it hits New York, so the main thing you will need to worry about is a lot of rain and possible flooding.

I don't know much about hurricanes being I live in Kansas but I do know due to Hurricane Irene they spotted this in Puerto Rico

now who said you were safe from them on land.

That photo is fake. The only shark that can survive in fresh water is the bull shark, and that is definitely not a bull shark. That, and, the Internet tirelessly found the photo he used to photoshop that shark into his photo instead of doing productive things.

Let's talk about a bullshit photo while lives are at risk.

I pray for the people who are in the path of this storm. Those who are in the shores of North Carolina and Virginia, the people in the Delmarva Peninsula, the people in New Jersey, Southern New York and Connecticut. They are in the direct path of this hurricane and will likely experience the worst damage to their respective areas in a long, long time.

if jabba the griffin were to perish, i would become an alcoholic and drink gin and tonics religiously for him.

tof bounces hurricanes off his body

Because the photo has zero relevance at all? I don't want a photo sending false messages to people who have never experienced a hurricane. "Hey guys if your streets flood there will be SHARKS in the water." Get off your pedestal and get laaaaiiiidddd.

You guys are worried about losing internet? Try living on the Outer Banks and basically being ground zero for landfall, coming back a couple days later, merely praying that your house is still where it was when you evacuated. This happens a lot to people who live on the Outer Banks, so they're used to it by now, and probably have the best emergency response team for hurricanes. Virginia doesn't usually have it as bad, since we're shielded by NC, but most of us aren't going to complain about lack of internet, we're going to be getting all the felled tree off our roads. You fucking whiner.

I live in Jersey at the moment and while the storm would normally be much weaker once it comes here (as mentioned before, it's the people in the Carolinas who should be worried), our marching band picked today, like every year, to go to band camp. Yes, I'll be on a bus headed to Pennsylvania at exactly the moment the hurricane is supposed to hit.

Wonderful.

hahah are you serious? it's going to be like a cat 1 or less by the time it gets to new york. you're pretty much safe to sit outside on lawnchairs with some beers and watch it go by. it's just wind and rain. its not like its going to rain down fire breathing dragons or anything. i live in florida, so i've seen tons of hurricanes, basically if your house isn't made of paper mahce, you're going to live and be alright.

I live in southeast Virginia so yeah I'm getting hit but frankly I'm not too worried, it's just going to be annoying as hell. Losing power is irritating, but there's also going to be tons of wind and rain which means the closest I can get to going outside is my garage. Also I have to cover up my car (soft-top convertible) to make sure it doesn't get torn up

Also, today they cancelled practice and team photos up at the school and my mom is getting off of work early

In class today, our teacher said they'll be school unless we get a phone call otherwise. The next thing we know, we're all going "What if" to everything.
"What if phone lines go down?"
"What if cell phone towers go down?"
"What if our building gets destroyed?"
blah blah blah

Even if it's a large category 1 hitting New York you still have storm surge and flooding and power outages. 5-10 inches of rain on already saturated ground is one of the biggest threats.

The only hurricane I remember hitting my area was Floyd in '99. By the time it was in New Jersey, I think it wad downgraded to either a category 1 hurricane or a tropical storm. That still did a lot of damage.
