Little things you like about Pokémon

Mars' zubat having U-Turn in BDSP, resulting in the following glorious quote

1637638432977.png

Excuse me what

Yeah, let me find you where it's said...
Huh, Bulbapedia doesn't mention it :blobthinking:...
No, not in the Sugimori discussion article either :smogduck:...
And Google is coming up blank too. :psynervous:

Huh, I could have sworn that was lore. Okay, so I think I'm wrong. I could have sworn I read that somewhere. I'll change my post to fix that after this one.

Hilarious, lets hope there's no new glitch that lets you enter the void again.
And yes, you can find Shaymin like this. Not sure about Darkrai yet.

That's actually not a glitch, it's just that they REALLY went hard on the Bibarel being the ultimate HM slave joke.

And now for the Top 5 "Zubat went back to Mars!" jokes:
  1. They need to go now, their planet needs them... And our planet no longer wants them.
  2. And take all your cave ringworm kin with you!
  3. A day later the Martians declared war & invaded Earth.
  4. Wow, they really upped the effectiveness of Repels!
  5. In space, no one can hear you GRRRAAOH.

So in one of these threads, a while ago, there was some nit picking over Rowan's dialog in DP
But the more I study, the more mysteries appear and multiply. Pokémon that evolve, and those that don't... What makes them different from each other? Do those that are immature as living beings evolve to once more mature? If so, what do we make of the legendary Pokémon that don't evolve? Are we to assume that the legendary Pokémon are complete as creatures?

And eventually it was just a thing of, well, obviously written for its time but the ydid leave them selves a small out by saying "The legendary pokemon that dont evolve" because thats just saying "those legends, who dont evolve, but some do" and not "Legendary Pokemon Don't Evolve"

But, to my surprise, they did decide to edit that last line in BDSP to clearly accommodate our newer, evolving Legendary pokemon: "Are we to assume that the Legendary Pokemon of Sinnoh are complete as creatures?"

And that's nice, I think. BDSP' script is generally described as "the exact same, unless it pertains to a new or changed feature" so something like this would have been easy to just let pass by. I just thought it was nice that Rowan zeroes in on the Sinnoh legends, who don't evolve, specifically.

They also changed this bit of dialog In the three lakes of Sinnoh, there are said to be mirage Pokémon. to "There is said to be a mysterious Pokemon in each of the three lakes of Sinnoh"
I actually think this might have been a change because Mythical Pokemon in japan are "Mirage Pokemon", makes me think that was a tweak from the Japanese script as well.

just fun little tweaks to me.

----
INCIDENTALLY, I really like that when the bomb goes off in the library, all the NPCs on the various floors have dialog changes for that specific moment. If you're going through the game, maybe take a moment to speak with them on your way out of the library. The woman at the entrance is fun in particular.

Spr DP Volkner.png

I really love how this game commits to making Volkner something of a secondary Water type gym leader across his various battles.
-Octillery in his first fight
-His gym rematch has him leading with Pelipper for Thunder spam
-Both of his Battle Tower off-typers (Gyarados and Swampert) are Water
-He uses both Water/Electric types in Lanturn and Rotom-Wash between rematch and Battle Tower

In DP
300px-Sinnoh_Pok%C3%A9mon_League_Pt.png

You can only make out a little part of victory road, that little rock outcropping

But in BDSP, if you go to the left of the pokemon league building, you can actualyl see a solid chunk of the victory road extension down below. THe ltitle bit of flowers, the foresty bits and if you look closely, you can even make out one of the trainers.
I like little touches like that in games, when you get real high up and can see a near by area.

While grabbing a quote on the BDSP website I noticed they had a little "trainer guide", which is periodically updating with new sections (ie there'll be a Contest one in a few days). I thought it'd just be something akin to tips & tricks, stuff to watch for, but no this is actually insanely detailed
https://diamondpearl.pokemon.com/en-us/trainersguide/grandunderground/

The underground, for example, while it doesn't list off every single thing it rattles off a lot of the hightlights of each biome, what items you can find, where you can access what, the digger missions and even a long spiel about Spiritomb. Like it's a fairly fleshed out section, you know?

I remember some old articles that get posted to the main pokemon website from a while back that have a lot of information, but those aren't as front & center here. I think it's just a cool thing to have access to, even if obviously a dedicated site will probably be better. It's like cracking open an actual guidebook.

Solrock and Lunatone in the context of Gen III mechanics were a great way to balance two version exclusives with the same typing(on paper, not in actuality):

-Solrock is physical based both offensively and defensively, while Lunatone is special based in both aspects as well.
-Thanks to their typing, they each get one STAB they can use their better attacking stat for (Rock for Solrock, Psychic for Lunatone)
-Due to levitate existing, and any form of ability removal/ignoring not being introduced until Gen IV(outside of Skill Swap, which is more of trading abilities than outright removal), they both have 6 weaknesses, three physical (Ghost, Bug, Steel) and three special (Water, Grass, Dark) While resistances are not even in this aspect, I cannot think of a typing where that would've been easily possible.

Whether or not this was intentional is unknown, but this is something I noticed back when I was a preteen when Ruby and Sapphire first came out in the west.

A small point worth appreciating about BDSP: Wild Pokémon break out of the Poké Ball much faster.

It removes tension and hype. If it's not almost instant, you know it passed the catch check.
The animation is faster (mostly from the point of connect to it plopping on the ground), but I think it's about the same as it usually is (or at least is as of SWSH).
They still have that little pause of anticipation unless it's an instant break out, which always happens super fast iirc

I suspect Sugimori designed them along with most other Gen 3 pairs, though it's hard to say
That's a really fascinating observation otherwise though
Shame they were obselete

for the character rares i already showed in this post, the spoiler name’ll just be the pokemon name…

Two cool early-game things I noticed while rewatching AmoebaUK's Emerald GQD run.

6:30
After the first rival fight, Brendan jumps down a ledge. This wordlessly informs anyone who tried walking through the brown lines from the bottom and assumed they were just walls that they can be passed through, but only from one direction.

10:26
When Wally leaves to go catch his Ralts, he stops at the door and turns around to face the player. This lasts less than a second since the player quickly catches up with Wally and they both go outside, but it gives the impression that Wally is holding the door for the player. It's little things like this that make me love in-engine cutscenes in older RPGs. Such limited animation can communicate a lot with only a few frames of animation.

by Xaviere:

Some of these are a bit strange (BTW for these observations note that Battle Facility pairings doesn't count unless it's the only time trainer & Pokemon are paired):
  • Abomasnow & Pryce: Not Candice? Heck I'd also think of Wulfric before Pryce, Pryce only used a Abomasnow for his HGSS rematch.
  • Gen I Eeveelutions & Blue: Now, I get it's a Pokemon Yellow reference, but still feels a bit cheap to use him for each one. If they didn't want to do Gym Leaders, in addition to Blue they could also have had Trace and, maybe as a surprise, Michael from XD: Gale of Darkness.
  • Octillery & SwSh Fisher: Being they didn't use Volkner for another card, he was available for this one. :P FUN FACT: The depicted version of this Trainer Class has never used this Pokemon (though another gen's version has).
  • Gardevoir & SwSh Doctor (Male): I noted this one before too, but still: REALLY? Not Diantha? Okay, yes, in SwSh there is a Male Doctor that uses a Gardevoir on Route 10, but that's REALLY reaching for not doing the obvious. Like, how about instead a throwback with RSE Wally?
  • Dusknoir & Morty: Eh, I guess with Fantina double-dipping and claiming Mismagius as her Signature, Morty might as well choose another gen's Ghost. With that said, I think Dusknoir is a pretty good choice for him.
  • Dedenne & Furisode Girl (Black): I personally would have done Bonnie for the anime reference. Also why is there fire is Dedenne's eyes? FUN FACT: There is indeed a Furisode Girl (Black) who uses a Dedenne in Laverre Gym, her name is Kali (Japanese "Kirika").
  • Passimian & ShSw Blackbelt: GEEZ THAT'S A BIG MONKEY! Like, that's way taller than 6 feet (also does anyone not buy Passimian being 6 feet? It feels like another situation where GF did an odd measurement, this time the length of its head to it tail when stretched out). FUN FACT: No Black Belt has ever used a Passimian.
  • Houndoom & Grimsley: Only on his B2W2 rematches. I think most people relate Houndoom to Archer and/or Karen (though for Karen they already paired her with Umbreon).
  • Bronzong & Jasmine: Only on her HGSS rematch team. Brozong is mostly linked to Lucian, though he's a Psychic-type Specialist and not many other Steel-type specialists use Bronzong.
  • Druddigon & BW Ace Trainer (Female): So I'm guessing this is Dara (Japanese "Yuka") from BW's Opelucid Gym? But if they're going to do a trainer from Opelucid Gym, why not Drayden or Iris?
  • Castform & B2W2 Cheren: Only on some of his World Tournament teams. I feel a Parasol Lady would have been a pretty good choice here.
  • Oranguru & SM Sina: It's kind of strange how Dexio is the Psychic-type specialist yet in the Battle Tree he uses Passimian while Sina uses Oranguru. So, with that said, I think Dexio should have been on the Passimian card. Or, if we use generic Trainer Classes, maybe a Psychic for Oranguru? Or, maybe as a fun little joke, a Poke Kid or Poke Maniac.
  • Kricketune & ORAS Bug Catcher: Really the only Fun Fact here: FUN FACT: The depicted version of this Trainer Class has never used this Pokemon (though another gen's version has).
  • Orbeetle & Bugsy: BOO! The game has only ever had one Orbeetle trainer and that's the player's #1 fan in SwSh. Since our first Gym Battle she has supported us in every Stadium we went to and we've watched her Blipbug evolve all the way to an Orbeetle. She may not be as visibly memorable as Ball Guy, but she was just as present as he was.
  • Boltund & Sonia: So, is this confirmation that Sonia evolved her Yamper?! Even in Masters her Sync Pokemon is still Yamper (and we've seen other trainers paired with unevolved Pokemon like Elesa with Flaaffy).
  • Shadow Rider Calyrex & Victor: Kind of odd to have Victor both here and for Galarian Articuno. Yeah, I know, they're kind of crunched for characters (though they have no problem with the odd combination here & there, so with that in mind I think Will would have made an apt choice), maybe have the Mayor of Freezington?
  • Galarian Zapdos & Sonia: Hey Sonia, you're not wearing your riding gear! But really, Sonia? These weren't even the Legendaries she was looking for in the Tundra, that was the Swords of Justice! Let's see, Victor is with G-Articuno, Gloria is with G-Moltres, Peony is with Ice Rider Calyrex... maybe Peonia? Or switch them around and have Peonia with G-Articuno as it never left the Frozen Tundra.
  • Urshifu (Single Strike) & Gloria: Since Mustard is on Urshifu Rapid Strike I say Honey should be having Urshifu Single Strike helping her with her daily exercise routine.
  • Zacian/Zamazenta & Hop: Eh... alright. I'll let it go this time, simply because aside from the player I can't of who else could share the Hero Duo with Hop.
And now for some Pokemon world building by using Pokemon for things other than battling... and also funny quips:
  • Abomasnow & Pryce: On a nice winter walk.
  • Flapple & Milo: Apple picking, I imagine the Applin family would pick the best apples.
  • Charizard & Leon: Just the boys hanging out on the couch, off screen probably some game controllers, Doritos, and Gatorade.
  • Kingdra & Clair: I think Clair is helping Kingdra up a waterfall? A neat reference to the HM that the Rising Badge allows you to use, but how is Clair able to climb up a Waterfall like that? Was she bitten by a radioactive Araquanid?
  • Frosmoth & Melony: Christmas decorating (cause you think Gordie or any of her other kids are going to help her despite the very nice presents she got them?).
  • Flaaffy & Elsa: Grooming Flaaffy... WHO'S MISSING ITS ARMS!... Wait, oh nevermind, it just has them tucked into its mane.
  • Dedenne & Furisode Girl (Black): Dedenne just making a cute menace of itself, though what would have made it funnier if the Furisode Girl was furious instead of enjoying Dedenne is wrecking her stuff.
  • Alcremie & Cafe Owner: "Now Alcremie, it looks wonderful, but I don't think anyone would want you to poop a mound of whipped cream and candy into their beverage..."
  • Rockruff & Kukui: There's not a day that Kukui doesn't miss Lillie... mostly because now he has to clean up his & Rockruff's messes.
  • Passimian & ShSw Blackbelt: "Master, I understand I have to exercise my throwing arm, but was putting the 100 pound weight into the Poke Ball necessary?"
  • Falinks & Bae: As funny as it is to think of the Falinks walking around with baskets on thier head, it's also easily missed that Bae herself is carrying like double her weight in supplies, lol.
  • Obstagoon & Piers: You know the story about Ozzy Osbourne biting a head off a bat? Well let's say a similar reason is why Piers needs to keep on buying new microphones whenever he passes the mic to Obstagoon...
  • Bronzong & Jasmine: Just on a walk through some Bronzong-based ruins, nothing suspicious about that, definitely nothing suspicious when its eyes start glowing at a random wall...
  • Druddigon & BW Ace Trainer (Female): Druddigon has its complete trust in its trainer. It trusts her to feed it, trusts her in battles, trusts her to take care of wounds, and most of all, trusts her in getting lost (that's when it gets in some quick nap time).
  • Castform & Cheren: Cheren's lecture on Weather effects during battle went well at first, but then Castform got too excited and started the weather presentation stage... while still inside...
  • Oranguru & SM Sina: A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men.
  • VMAX Orbeetle & Bugsy: Bugsy has to go now, his planet needs him...
  • Blaziken & May: Everyone was kung pow chicken breakdancing.
  • VMAX Blaziken & May: When Blaziken hinted it wanted to go on a long walk, this wasn't what May had in mind.
  • Centiskorch & Kabu: Kabu, can you try not having the long, prickly, and fiery creature stand between your spaced legs, thanks...
  • VMAX Centiskorch & Kabu: So that's how Kabu gets in his mile long walk without anyone ever seeing him go on them.
  • Ice Rider Calyrex & Peony: "Hey, Big Nog, I'm honored ya callin' me in to help explore the steeper side of the mountain, but think I can take a turn ridin' on ya' horse to take the load off ma feet."
  • VMAX Ice Rider Calyrex & Peony: "THIS WASN'T WHAT I MEANT WHEN I SAID TAKING OFF MY FEET!"
  • Boltund & Sonia: If you're wondering why Yamper is now a Boltund but Sonia is wearing her old outfit, well turns out Magnolia had a secret pocket filled with Exp. Candy in the lab coat and Sonia forgot to hang it up one day...
  • Morpeko & Marnie: The card on the top right is the most expensive one of the batch, followed by the card on the bottom right, top left, and having barely any value at all the card on the bottom left.
  • Mimikyu & Acerola: It was on that day little Acerola learned that some kinks should be shamed...
  • VMAX Mimikyu & Acerola: Mimikyu's costume wasn't a very good Pikahcu, but made for a surprisingly comfortable bean bag filled with nightmares!
  • Shadow Rider Calyrex & Victor: I don't quite remember this part of the Neverending Story.
  • VMAX Shadow Rider Calyrex & Victor: I don't quite remember this part of Peter Pan.
  • Galarian Zapdos & Sonia: ROAD RAGE!
  • VMAX Urshifu (Single Strike) & Gloria: (Stand User: LL Gloria) (Stand: Mama Said Knock You Out)
  • Urshifu (Rapid Strike) & Mustard: When Honey packed an odd number of dumplings but there's plenty to go around.
  • VMAX Urshifu (Rapid Strike) & Mustard: When there's only ONE of Honey's dumplings left.
  • Umbreon & Karen: Umbreon hated those nights when Karen gets really smashed, forget she owns it, and starts making silly clicking noises and saying "heeere kit-ty kit-ty".
  • VMAX Umbreon & Karen: Karen hated those nights when both her and Umbreon gets smashed and they wake up sleeping on dumpsters and Umbreon is Dynamaxed... and Karen doesn't own a Dynamax Band...
  • Eternatus & Rose: "Now where did I put that "stop the Darkest Day button"."
  • VMAX Eternatus & Rose: "Oh, right. I never made one. Why would I need such a silly thing I would never need, right Champion?"
  • Corviknight & Taxi Driver: Hidden insight on what your Uber Eats driver does with your morning coffee & paper that it takes so long.
  • VMAX Corviknight & Taxi Driver: Sure, it could carry the taxi in one of its claws, but it then wouldn't look like its wearing a silly hat, now would it? Check mate.
  • Zacian & Hop: "Drop it, DROP IT girl, how are we suppos'd to play fetch if you won't drop it?"
  • Zamazenta & Hop: "I saw the Alolan Champion do this all time in the movies that he's in, CHARGE!"
  • Rayquaza & Zinnia: If I stand at the right angle to the camera it'll look like Rayquaza is wearing a cute little ascot.
  • VMAX Duraludon & Raihan: Losing the championship he could take, but when Leon said he ate the last of the Bob's Juicy Curry that was THE straw that broke the dragon's back.
  • Blissey & Pokemon Center Nurse: Okay Blissey, looks like the four critical condition Pokemon haven't reached their baseline, remember to first cover their mouths and then their nose so that way their screams aren't so loud.
