Little things you like about Pokémon

Legends Arceus has this strange effect on me. With any other game I like, no matter how good, I eventually get used to its presence. I take it for granted. "Oh yeah DKC Tropical Freeze and Rayman Legends, those masterfully crafted pinnacles of 2d platforming, they're pretty cool huh?". I mean heck, LA isn't even my favorite Pokemon game. And yet, even over two years later, it still hasn't yet managed to fully settle into being a mundane fact of life. Often times when I'm listening to a bit of the soundtrack or thinking about my favorite moments or even something as simple as looking at Rei & Akari's official renders there's this voice in the back of my head. "No Dramps, this isn't fanfiction. You're not looking at a fakemon, or commissioned background music for someone's elaborate pitch video. This was a real product that released. You bought it. You've played it before and you can play it again at any time." It's an oddly beautiful sensation, truth be told. I wonder if this series can ever make me feel it again.

-Arven finally got added to Masters and he has interactions with N of all people. I'm over the moon. He also has special dialogue if he's on a team with Nemona and Penny, Area Zero gang rise up (also with Siebold and Mallow apparently)

-Speaking of Nemona: there are many things I love about her (her annoyance regarding how others react to her family's wealth, she not being good at throwing Pokeballs, just her personality overall and how that leads to having complicated social relationships) but I specially like that the player can actually lose most battles against her. Really helps sell her as this experienced Trainer who is just starting a new playthrough at a disadvantage against us for fun, in contrast to someone like Blue who is always magically ahead of the player despite getting his butt kicked constantly. Kind of wish they would use this with a cocky rival again.

- The Hisuian Snow credit images are awesome as little flashbacks before LA. They are very nice little additions to the world and characters.

The TCG, especially the English side, can have some really great names for its abilities and attacks.
Shrouded Fable has exes for the Loyal 3 and all are great

Fezendipiti has "Flip the Script" abilitiy
Munkidori has "Oh No You Don't" ability
Okidogi has "Chain-crazed" attack

Pecharunt's "Irritated outburst" is also pretty good

(Oh sweet Arceus I'm like 20 pages behind...)

Anyway, just wanted to post something I found just now. In Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon, when explroign though a dungeon, teammates may have something to say. Each non-Partner Pokemon has two phrases, one where they're above half HP (where they just make a comment reflecting their species behavior) and one where they're below half HP (where they mention they're not feeling great, sometimes in a way reflecting their species behavior). Now reading through a whole batch of them are entertaining, you can tell the devs had fun writing them especially when they were allowed to get quirky or referential.

However, some Pokemon which have something notable: each of their forms have their own phrases! It's not all Pokemon with forms (btw, this also includes Gender Differences for a batch of them). However, I'm only going to highlight one Pokemon which they did this for, and it's one you wouldn't have expect: Unown. Yes, each form of Unown have their own pair of phrases, and they're just great. Not going to post every single one of them, but here's a few standouts:

Yet more proof Unown is the best Johto Pokemon.

Alolan-Exeggutor-ex-SIR.png

Nevet thought Alolan Exeggutor of all mons could be made to look better with Stellar Tera of all hats.

Ironically, it being able to curve its neck so much means that despite being so tall they probably had an easier time with it than some of the other Tera cards, where even on the full art version the hats are too big to be shown propertly.

Even as the worst possible in-game Pokémon for battles, the way developers make use of the Unown never cease to amuse me in a good way, with most them going as far as calling themselves the letter as their “true” name. X and Z’s pun stood out for me!

-More TCG stuff, sorry-

Trainer's Pokemon are, as leaked for a while now, returning to the TCG. Even as someone not interested on the mechanic at all, seeing N's team fighting Tera, Paradox (Iron Hands) and legendaries from Paldea (Chien-Pao, they know what they are doing) on the trailer was very hype, specially since I played White so I always relate him to Reshiram. I wonder what the crowd reaction was, trough I guess people were probably more hyped about the Rocket's Mewtwo teaser.

edit:the trailer just for people who want to watch it

I think it's like objectively the best Alolan form. Significant change in design with a very fun type and origin. I guess Weezing would be my Galarian equivalent for similar reasons even if they are not my favourites.

I just thought the Tera hat would look bad on something so tall, but I guess Raging Bolt is there.

I liked the trailer a lot too, but also because the Pokemon shown in that segment were popular deck staples
Dark Tera Charizard ex vs Chien-Pao ex including support from Baxcalibur, for their specific deck.
Iron Hands ex, common option in several decks, vs Tera Dragon Dragapult ex. Which...well, honestly, Dragapult's best deck is discard fodder for Regidrago VSTAR but it was used in a lot of Japanese decks after release trying to make its own dedicated deck or splash card work so for the time when they commissioned the trailer it makes sense.

Marnie was getting in on it too: she was fighting against Cramorant & Sableye from the Lost Box archetype

Lillie's segment is like only one that didn't line up with any of that. Like there's a Comfey but that's probably more because it's Alola and a Fairy type. There's Murkrow, which is in United Wings but....no one seriously plays United Wings, so it was probably just an USUM reference. But she's also the start of the trailer meant ot make you wonder what's up, and she wasn't fighting anyone, so it's fine.

Lillie being with Clefairy and Comfey is, I think, just a reference to the Pokémon she happens to use in USUM. Clefairy is the one she uses when you team up with her during the Rainbow Rocket story, and Comfey is her ace Pokémon as a multi battle partner, being the one she uses a Z Move with. I find that neat tbh

Likewise the Cutiefly calls to her using Ribombee

The original set of Trainer pokemon had a few anime references to it, like Brock's Vulpix & Zubat, so I wonder if we might see Lillie's Vulpix & Magearna.

The contrast between Red and Blue is highlighted in different ways depending on which starters they pick.

Venusaur's supportive moves emphasizes Red's quiet helpful nature, while Charizard emphasizes Blue's aggression and brash confidence.

Red chooses Charizard because it's a cool dragon and his name is Red. He's just in it for the love of the Pokemon. Blue doesn't care about Blastoise and only chose it to have an advantage over Red, building up to Professor Oak's roast at the end of the game. (also the colors don't actually match in Japanese)

I don't really have a read on this one but I don't think I've ever seen this combo in any official media. I guess you could do something with Venusaur being part Poison? I dunno.

So as someone who only got back into Pokemon quite recently, I had never actually seen the Gotcha! video.
I'm speechless. That's nostalgia done right. And I love the lyrics and countless references- those Unova transitions! Few things in Pokemon actually make me look back and appreciate how much it meant to my younger self. It made my bad childhood brighter. It couldn't help with my very dark teenage years but probably nothing would have helped me back then. It's awesome. Hoping to see something similar gor the 30th anniversary so I can see Paldea characters there.

I know it sounds corny asf but genuinely didn't expect to get emotional with it. My journeys, my experiences, my teams, my hopes and wonders of what will be next. It's all in a great song dedicated to Galar and everything befote with superb animation. I'm going to listen to it so much.

nuh-uh what will really heat that up is when they're gonna show Shiny Pokémon like steven or lance's
Arven's Pokémon as shinies would be really cool I think
I'm more hyped about Arven's Mabostiff that anything Rocket related, that should tell you how weird I find myself compared to the TCG part of the fandom...but shiny Steven's Mega Metagross? Sounds pretty neat actually. Maybe even have Ethan's Pichu be the eared one from HGSS.

But if I keep going, capitalism wins again. Until I have a single card of every gen IX mon excluding paradoxes I shouldn't be tempted by this.

Yeah, I have never seeing the third option in media either. They probably dont want Charizard out of anything. But I do like when Red has Venusaur like in Let's Go.

EDIT: Screw that, I just saw it! In Gotcha! Champion Blue uses Venusaur, and MtSilver Red uses Blastoise!

I usually headcanon Red with Venusaur because of a potential tag-team in a later game after some character growth:
:sm/venusaur::sm/charizard-mega-y:
Red, as a dex completionist as well as an ace trainer, has him knowing when it's better to make use of hidden talents over obvious power; Blue has kept up his confidence while having learned to help others a bit more.

Finally had the chance of seeing in real life someone who struggled hours versus Volo and Giratina, was so incredibly happy when he thought it was over that he was taking screenshots. Then comes the perfectly placed , wonderful music of the second phase (really the Switch games have the best music in the series, fight me). He obviously lost both the battle and hopes of even being able to win.

Priceless. I hope we get more of 5his in the future, but with new mons/forms in order to keep it a surprise to most players

This fight really is what BW2 Ghetchis should have been.

As time goes on I can't wait to see how more old legendaries finally get the fully fleshed out boss battles they always should have had. They're gonna cook up something wicked for Xerneas, Yveltal & Zygarde, I just know it. And that especially goes for the music! After turning one of the most overlooked mascot legendary battle themes into a top 5 contender, lord knows what sort of black magic will be applied to the XY one.

I like that one of the first new Trainer's Pokemon in the TCG is Ethan. The TCG is still very iffy about using the player characters for anything and even with stuff like the trainer gallery cards, Ethan's never seen use at all.

And using a Pichu too! In addition to being cute, the only Pichu we've had since the HGSS era has been a japanese-exclusive Promo.

Incidentally Lyra, Brendan, Hilda, Hilbert, Elio, Selene, Chase, Elaine, Florian, Juliana and Kris haven't had any sort of cards. Hoping we see some more of them this go around! Lyra's Marill ex could be cute.
Nate's only appearance has been a BW-era Samurott card where he got mike wazowski'd and is easy to miss.

This is the kind of thing that, alongside the new models, makes me appreciate the work they put into animations in SV so much after replaying SWSH. It better not go to waste once they jump to the next console, it took us three gens to get a good looking Charizard and many more to get attention to Typhlosion's flames and Blastoise's cannons... I know the whole Synchro thing was probably betatesting something for next gen just like Crown Tundra did for open world SV so I'm hopeful, but still.

Discounting Z-moves, which only really affected moves and not the Pokemon themselves, the generational super mechanics have gone Mega Evolution -> Gigantimax -> Terastallization, which lines up with the progression of metric size prefixes of mega -> giga -> tera.

Only Time knows if the next one in line will start with "peta".

Can't wait to see what they do for Zetta and Yotta. :blobnom:
