Week 28 Defensive Alomomola

Alomomola @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 36 HP / 220 Def / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Wish
- Protect
- Toxic
- Scald

Alomomola has recently risen in usage mostly for Stall teams as it has ridiculous bulk from its massive HP and decent Defenses. Regenerator makes Alomomola difficult to wear down along with its bulk making a great wish passer. As a defensive Pokemon, it has a good Water typing, as well as access to Scald to burn physical attackers that could try to set up on it. Unfortunately, Alomomola's Scald is very weak, often not even doing much to Pokemon it is super effective against it, this can make Alomomola vulnerable against some setup sweepers, mostly Gliscor. However, Alomomola can still wall a huge amount of dangerous threats and is a fine choice on balanced and stall teams.

P.S. I can't wait for Chople Berry Heatran to be trending next, just you wait guys...

Reserving SUNNY DAY SOLARBEAM HEATRAN

notFaLsE (Heatran) @ Heat Rock
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Sunny Day
- Magma Storm
- Solar Beam
- Taunt

aight, heres something fresh. Since alo is so weak, scald does pitiful damage and since it isnt soak, it cant toxic us :D Sunny Day makes scald do 0 and allow us to Solarbeam more than once. Heat Rock makes sun last for 8 turns instead of the normal 5 and Taunt basically makes Alo useless and cant recover HP back. Magma Storm is just there to trap other bulky waters and kill them with Solarbeam including Rotom-W, Slowbro and bulky Starmie.

I'll copy the set later but you know how it works. Just toxic on the switch and run away. No one actually needs to lure an alomomola though since it's so passive, every good team has a check to keldeo and that check is even better for alomomola.

Jirachi @ Expert Belt
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 132 Atk / 160 SpA / 216 Spe
Mild Nature
- Iron Head
- Icy Wind
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power Ground

Lure Jirachi lures stuff, Alomomola among them. While it doesn't really like scald burns, it can still cleanly 2HKO Alomomola with Thunderbolt after rocks, While Alomomola can only fish (Badum-tsss) for scald burns back. Not really much else to say, but I'll give some calcs.

160+ SpA Expert Belt Jirachi Thunderbolt vs. 36 HP / 252+ SpD Alomomola: 228-269 (47.5 - 56%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Defensive Infernape

Infernape @ Leftovers
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 248 HP / 88 Def / 124 SpD / 48 Spe
Impish Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Slack Off
- Taunt
- Low Kick

4 Atk Infernape Low Sweep vs. 36 HP / 220 Def Alomomola: 69-82 (14.3 - 17%) -- possible 9HKO after Leftovers recovery ===> Will o' Wisp is better in this case, because it neuters Leftovers while dealing another 6% of damage
0 SpA Alomomola Scald vs. 212 HP / 0 SpD Infernape: 114-134 (32.9 - 38.7%) -- 5.7% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recoveryand you can use a faster recovery move

Albeit uncommon, defensive Infernape is a good way to lure in defensive pokemons, which commonly switch into Infernape, ruining them with WoW (i.e. Landorus-T) or Taunt (i.e. Alomomola which is a GSI to Infernape).
With Taunt you can PP stall Scald with the aid of Slack Off considering that, at best, Alomomola might 3HKO this Infernape.

Defensive Infernape is a viable lure for other traditional switch-ins because almost nobody expects that this is a defensive variant (at least before seeing WoW).

Garchomp @ Leftovers
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Substitute
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Dragon Claw

Sub SD Chomp. Run whatever item you want, I chose lefties because it provides recovery - Other cool items would be things like Lum Berry, Earth Plate or Salac Berry. Basically Mola switches in, you get a free Sub on the Scald/Toxic (Scald doesn't break sub bc Mola is weaker than AM ) This isn't a complex idea. Lum SD does a similar thing but Scalds/Toxics can break through Lum much more easily and get a status on le chomper. If Mola switches in on your Sub then you SD for free as it switches out and boom you're +2 chomp behind a sub. Problems for this set are things like Unaware mons (Clef/Quag), Togekiss, Skarmory.

I'd just like to point out that pretty much anything with Sub + Set up move (Or just sub + hard hitter) could do this because 3 of the 4 moves on Mola don't do shit to subs and it's so weak that unless you're a camerupt, your sub is probably fine vs a Scald. I chose Garchomp because I'm a fun and creative user. You could do this with many mons, including goddamn Tyranitar.

0 SpA Alomomola Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 49-58 (13.7 - 16.2%) -- possible 7HKO - If you were really bothered about Alomomola you could invest so that your sub is not 2hkod but it's a massive waste of EVs most of the time.

(using Mola spread provided)
+4 252 Atk Garchomp Earthquake vs. 36 HP / 220 Def Alomomola: 460-543 (95.8 - 113.1%) -- 75% chance to OHKO
+4 252 Atk Garchomp Earthquake vs. 36 HP / 220 Def Alomomola: 460-543 (95.8 - 113.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Like several people have said, one really does not need to lure Alomomola, it's just too passive.

Regardless...

Lopunny @ Lopunnite
Ability: Limber
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Toxic
- Substitute
- Return
- High Jump Kick

Clair 's Subtoxic MLopunny set can lure in a lot of the more passive stuff, such as Quagsire. Anyway, basically get Substitute up, as Alomomola can't break through Sub with Scald, use Toxic, and spam Return or High Jump Kick. You can also probably force a switch, making SubToxic Mega Lopunny a decent lure for passive stall Pokemon not named Skarmory.

Landorus-Therian @ Soft Sand
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 72 HP / 252 Atk / 184 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Stealth Rock
- Swords Dance

Alomomola can safely come in on Landorus-T as Defensive and Scarf variants both deal laughable damage to it and the damage can be negated by Wish / Regenerator. However, with the boost from Soft Sand and Swords Dance, Landorus-T can OHKO Alomomola from full HP. This set is normally used to pressure defensive teams and get Rocks up.

252+ Atk Soft Sand Landorus-T Earthquake vs. 36 HP / 220 Def Alomomola: 220-259 (45.8 - 53.9%) -- 2.3% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252+ Atk Soft Sand Landorus-T Earthquake vs. 36 HP / 220 Def Alomomola: 438-516 (91.2 - 107.5%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO

Jirachi @ Leftovers
Ability: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 160 Atk / 96 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Iron Head
- Toxic
- Substitute
- Fire Punch

Alomomola is so crazy weak that literally anything with Substitute is able to wall it out. Alomomola is typically able to deal with Jirachi, but it's Scalds are unable to 2HKO Jirachi's Subs. This provides Jirachi an opportunity to start spreading Toxic damage and flinching stuff with Iron Head. This one's kinda weird in that it's not like Alomo is going to take ridiculous amounts of damage on the switch or anything like that, but it does give Jirachi opportunities to do Jirachi stuff and start chipping away at defensive cores so I guess it works?

0 SpA Alomomola Scald vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Jirachi: 43-52 (10.6 - 12.8%) -- 3HKOes Jirachi's Substitute
160 Atk Jirachi Iron Head vs. 232 HP / 252+ Def Alomomola: 42-50 (7.9 - 9.4%) -- use Toxic first

Keldeo-Resolute @ Choice Specs
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Secret Sword
- Hydro Pump
- Scald
- Focus Blast

This is a really basic lure to net a huge chunk of damage of Alomomola on switch ins. When the Amoonguss is overpressured in the back sometimes Alomomola will be used as a last resort switch in as it can normally come in fine against every move except Focus Blast.

252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Focus Blast vs. 36 HP / 252+ SpD Alomomola: 333-393 (69.3 - 81.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Hydro Pump vs. 36 HP / 252+ SpD Alomomola: 153-180 (31.8 - 37.5%) -- 0% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Secret Sword vs. 36 HP / 220 Def Alomomola: 195-231 (40.6 - 48.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Choice Specs Keldeo Scald vs. 36 HP / 252+ SpD Alomomola: 111-131 (23.1 - 27.2%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
