Magic the Gathering thread

I have always liked to play Magic the gathering and i think it will be interesting to make a thread relating this card game, to start, what do you think about the new planeswalker card type?

Planeswalkers are pretty freaky. They act like enchantments and/or creatures, yet are neither one. Being that there is only 5 with very generic color pie effects and no support cards whatsoever, they haven't had a big impact on my gaming community at all. (Fuck that green one though. Fuck him.)

(If you ask me, WTOC totally ripped off Upperdeck's WOW card game with the idea of planeswalkers, just saying)

Haha i used to be addicted to this game. what set is it on now anyways? i kind of stopped after time spiral...after the nostalgia hit me, i decided to go back to the old days of 7th and odyssey

I loved Solidarity. So much fun to beat up random noobs with it at the local card shop.

What types/metas do you all play? I personally have changed a bunch in the past; I started out as Type 1, then I realized I didn't have nearly enough money to compete and moved on to Type 2, and then back to Type 1 after the place I played T2 stopped having regular tournaments. I've also consistently played Legacy and Extended, although more as a hobby than actually competitively.

I usually play extended its the format that i can afford the most, and that way i only have to but some online cards on some periods of time, i agree that planeswalkers are a rippoff, but they are pretty fun to play, and are actually really powerful (at least in standard) a friend has a deck that uses liliana vess and that bitch sure can kick ass.
this its the extended deck i use the most.
Goblins >_<

4 Skirk prospector
4 mogg frantic
4 goblin sledder
4 mogg war marshal
1 sparksminth
4 G. piledriver
4 G. warchief
1 G. king
4 gempalm incinerator
2 Siege gang commander
1 g. sharpshooter
4 goblin ringleader
2 goblin burrows
21 mountains

^ This its not the actual deck, its how i think it was, i think i have seething song or rite of flame instead of 4 goblins, and i have instead of 3 mountains 3 fetch lands from odyssey, i want to change this deck to the fecundity goblin deck, looks so awesome >_<

you goddamn kids and your newfangled cards

back in my day we had phasing and WE LIKED IT DAMMIT

seriously though, what the hell is going on in this game nowadays? i played mostly during 4th ed-> torment/one or two sets after torment and i'm already lost looking at some of the newer cards

ok, for all the ppl that doesn't know, Wizards created a new card type named planeswalkers, the planeswalkers are supposed to be the persons that can travel between dimensions and do all types of crazy shit (think of them as god), in MAgic the gathering when you play, supposedly YOU represent a planeswalker and can summon spells a creatures and all other thing that has been invented, but this new card type will have a huge impact on magic, like for example probably in the future some genius will create a planeswalker card for Urza, Karn, Nicol Bolas, or other, i personally hate the new card type from the flavor point, because you are not supposed to be able to take "control" of gods

WOTC messed up the game by changing to card design in 8th Edition. Magic is supposed to be old-timey, not sleek and classy!

Anyway, I stopped after Ravnica and retired my awesome Green/White/Blue counter deck. Thoguh I've started drafting Lorwyn in tournaments.

Hi I play Magic.

I can't and even if I could I wouldn't spend lots of money on it. I am aware I can't compete with the likes of Nassif, Finkel or those freaky japs. I am completely happy with my current decks and casual matches. I'd post the lists but I don't want to flood you :)

My favorite format has got to be Limited. I find it fascinating and incredibly fun(and is the only one I can afford and am somewhat good too!).

I want to play magic but nobody near me plays. I could try the online version but I dont feel like paying for a subscription on top of all the cards I would need to buy (it needs a subscription right?)

I play mtg at a pretty competitive level. I've never been to a pro tour, but I've been to several grand prix and I regularly play in ptqs.

Limited is a lot of fun, I used to spend so much money playing it on Magic Online. Constructed right now is pretty dull. Tarmogoyf is in every other deck. As a result, those things are like $35 a peice, and you need 4 for an aggro deck. I can't stand standard, and I really only play it when it's time for regionals or some other big event. The current ptq season right now is extended, which is very expensive if you don't have all the cards.

I have gone to a grand prix on mexico df, and also go to some tournaments on Monerrey, I dont suck that much, but i dont spend a lot o money to buy, i usually buy online and only a few each month

Who knows, i think that every place has someone who plays magic, i am always surprised at how many ppl play or have played this game

I played competitively back in the Odyssey days, and I had a competitive deck when Mirrodin first came out as well. I played a bit of Kamigawa block, and after that I haven't really touched a Magic card. The game is fun, but it's also a waste of money in my opinion.

I played up until around the Invasion cycle. Lack of people to play with, along with some unhappiness about where they were taking the game, convinced me to quit. I do sorta look at my Magic obsessing days as a precursor to my obsession with Pokemon, though. ^^

i'm curious, what was kamigawa all about? that whole block just looked like it didn't really uh, "fit", i guess. this is more about the books though, which i've kept up with for awhile now.

for awhile it's just your typical fantasy mtg world, then BAM what's up? we're samurai. has anyone read those books, and if so are they worth reading?

once the main story arc with urza an the weatherlight finished they shud have started a new one instead of smaller stories only covering one block each
