Project Metagame Workshop

Low Power Mons

Premise:
an Ubers based metagame in which Pokemon can only use moves that have 60 BP or lower.

Decreased Viability:
:flutter mane: :ogerpon hearthflame: :landorus therian::ceruledge: :great tusk: etc.
These pokemon lose one or both of their valuable STAB options as well as a good coverage move in this mode.
Increased Viability:
:dragonite:
Finally has a good STAB option in Aerial Ace or Wing Attack.

Bans:
:miraidon: and :calyrex shadow:, as they are in the AG tier.
:dugtrio: :smeargle: :gengar mega:
Standard ability bans, like Shadow Tag, Moody, etc.

Any move above 60 BP, hence the premise.
:basculegion: :cyclizar: :ribombee:
Last Respects, Shed Tail, Baton Pass.

Watchlist:
:koraidon:
Still has an amazing ability that helps with its poor moveset
:palafin:
Jet Punch and Flip Turn.
:volcarona:
Quiver Dance is still insane, and Bug STAB isn’t all that useful anyway.
:chien-pao:
I’m 99% sure this has Bite and still has Ice Shard.
:chi-yu:
Snarl (and maybe Incinerate).

:scizor: :breloom: :maushold:
Technician as an independent ability. Need I say more?

:rillaboom: :dragapult: :urshifu rapid strike:
Any Pokemon like that ones above that already have a move 60 BP or lower and are good with that move already.

:loaded dice:
Either this or multi-hit moves that are on the watchlist.

Q&A:

Q: How do weight dependent moves and moves that have no base power (like Endeavor) work?
A: Those moves could still be legal as they do not have really any base power but still do damage:

Q: :zacian crowned: :zamazenta crowned: how do these two even work if a move like Metal Claw is equipped?
A: They are hard-coded to where their move changes if a move like Metal Claw is selected to Behemoth Blade/Bash. As a result, they might receive a ban.

Q: Would status moves still work?
A: That would be a Yes. With a capital Y.

Multi-hit moves absolutely need to be on the watchlist, if not outright banned. For example, Koraidon can still use Scale Shot just fine, then put on Loaded Dice and attack with a 100+-BP move in practice. For less orthodox multi-hit moves, there are Triple Axel and Population Bomb.

Priority moves likely need to be on the watchlist, due to their low-BP drawback being mostly erased in this meta.

How exactly is any Pokemon supposed to be able to take down bulky walls or bulky setup sweepers now when their moves do 1/3 or lower than the original damage? In fact, some Pokemon just lose important coverage to hit other Pokemon, such as Ceruledge losing Fighting moves and Great Tusk losing Ice moves.

I should have listed the multi hit moves on watchlist or loaded dice mb

Moves that increase your bulk could probably get a ban. As for natural bulk, nothing can be done abt that. I’ll also be sure to include that the pokemon with decreased viability lost a good coverage move.

Defence is the best offence which is the best defence
Metagame premise:
The defensive and offensive type chart have been switched. (Shown in the picture)
Potential bans and threats: Ground/Flying is only weak to flying and can attack flying with it’s STAB of flying. Steel attack moves hitting 11 types for super effective damage.
Questions for the community: What would be a better name for defence is the best offence which is the best defence and does the name express the premise well enough? What specific pokemon did I miss that would be a potential threat? would the om would work better as ubers as the template or ou? How can immunities return because a immunity less meta game is broken like we have seen in inverse?

Sadly, there's already a name for this metagame which already exists and is named Inverse.

yea this has been like proposed many times under different names (coverage/ weakness swap, reverse coverage metagame etc). It's just a more complicated inverse, where you have to memorize stuff - which usually doesn't make for an attractive metagame.

My bad, I understood Minotaur08 's type chart the wrong way. Someone posted a similar suggestion → earlier in the thread, so I don't think it'll have much interest, even though the concept sounds great to me.

:Jumpluff: Stat Sappers :Bellossom:

Premise
Any game mechanic that uses percentages of a pokemon's max-HP stat (i.e. Leftovers recovery, Steel Beam recoil, Sitrus Berry, Blaze activation HP) can be replaced with percentages of another raw stat of your choosing via nicknaming your pokemon the appropriate stat.

However, this comes at a cost: Whenever the mechanic activates, pokemon's corresponding stat will be lowered by 1 stage.

Examples
:Toxapex: Recover: Heals the user by 50% of its max HP.
Defense: A Toxapex nicknamed "Defense" can heal 50% of its Defense stat as recovery, which can be further increased by moves such as Iron Defense.
:Volcarona: Swarm: At 1/3 or less of its max HP, this Pokemon's offensive stat is 1.5x with Bug type attacks.
Sp. Attack: If a Volcarona nicknamed "Special Attack" has HP that is 1/3 or less of its Sp. Attack stat, its Bug type attacks will have x1.5 power. The threshold HP amount can be increased by moves such as Quiver Dance.
:Rillaboom: Grassy Surge + Leftovers + Substitute: (+1/16, +1/8, -1/4 max HP respectively)
Attack/Defense: can use Swords Dance or Bulk Up to increase its end-of-turn recovery and Substitute health.
:Ursaluna: Flame Orb: Burn is -1/16 of max HP.
Speed: can run min speed under TR to receive 1/16 of Speed stat as HP loss every turn.

Things Affected
  • All passive damage blocked by Magic Guard excluding damage based recoil (Brave Bird, Head Smash etc).
  • Recovery from items: Leftovers, Black Sludge, Oran Berry, Sitrus Berry, Aguav Berry recovery (both the recovery amount and threshold HP)
  • Recovery from terrain: Grassy Terrain / Grassy Surge
  • Recoveries from abilities: Water Absorb, Volt Absorb, Earth Eater, Regenerator, Rain Dish, Ice Body, Dry Skin, Poison Heal, Cheek Pouch,
  • Abilities with threshold HP: Defeatist, Shields Down, Anger Shell, Berserk, Wimp Out, Emergency Exit, Zen Mode, Power Construct, Gluttony
  • Pinch Berries: Berries that activate when a certain percentage of max HP is hit.
  • Multiscale, Sturdy, Gale Wings (not sure about these!)
  • Focus Sash
  • Recovery moves: Recover, Heal Pulse, Slack Off, Soft-boiled, Roost, Morning Sun, Moonlight, Floral Healing, Shore Up, Wish, Life Dew, Jungle Healing, Lunar Blessing, Present
  • Other moves that use fixed HP percentage: Curse, Substitute, Clangorous Soul, Belly Drum, Fillet Away, Super Fang, Ruination, Eruption, Water Spout, Reversal, Flail, Crush Grip, Hard Press

Banlist and Clauses:
Standard OMs, OU Banlist
Potential additional bans: Eruption, Water Spout, Belly Drum

Can a Pokémon "opt out" and use the standard behavior by not having a stat as its nickname?

The stat lowering seems like a weird addition, and it actually makes some things (i.e. those that choose to use low stats instead of high stats, or Pokémon with Contrary) more broken. Also, how does "whenever the mechanic activates" apply to things like Swarm?

Things that relate to full health (Multiscale, Sturdy, Gale Wings, Focus Sash) should not be affected, since I'm guessing they are in fact checking whether you're at full health rather than checking for 100% health. If Sturdy is affected, FEAR becomes way more powerful than in standard play - min speed level 1 Donphan only needs to hold an Iron Ball and lower its speed one stage (which it can do with Curse) to reach 1 HP, at which point it can only be killed by passive damage.

Belly Drop, Eruption, and Water Spout should not be just potential bans. Snorlax shouldn't be able to maximize its attack at the cost of 6% of its HP, and Torkoal definitely shouldn't be able to do this:
252+ SpA Torkoal Eruption (2580 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Eviolite Chansey in Sun: 2409-2835 (342.1 - 402.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

A lot of defensive Pokémon (especially Chansey) become nearly immune to passive damage at the cost of needing to rely on Rest for recovery.

Yes, you can opt out by leaving nickname blank.

This was a balancing addition, it may not be the cleanest way to go about it. You probably need some way to prevent iron defense or SD spams which would give you absurd amount of recovery. Overgrow, Blaze interaction would probably be too weird with them activating and deactivating constantly depending on drops so it's probably safest to get rid of it.

I'm not too worried about the negative ones like Life Orb, Steel Beam. Sub would probably be problematic. I roughly agree with the banlist. Belly Drum, Clang, Erupt/Spout would definitely need to go and 100% stuff would need to get excluded.

How fun and playable do you think this would be? Too many broken things?
Just to make sure I understood your examples : if Ursaluna is given the Flame Orb and nicknamed "Speed", it'll lose 1/16 of its base speed every turn, instead of its HP, won't it ? If so, how would the stat drop compare to a regular one, considering it's not the same fraction ? Would it be converted to a -1 in Speed, or would it be separated ?

Either way, I like your idea. I don't think there would be too many broken things, but you might consider banning the following moves :
  • Belly Drum
  • Destruction
  • Explosion
  • Fillet Away
  • Final Gambit
  • Steel Beam

This also makes for an interesting, perhaps more broken metagame. In my case, recovery is still recovery or HP loss is still HP loss, it is just based on a different stat. When you use Recover, you can recover 50% of your defense stat as recovery. Ursaluna, for example, instead of losing 1/16 of its max-HP loses the HP amount that is given by 1/16 of its raw speed stat.

Unconditional
Premise: All conditions are removed from moves or abilities.

Details:
For abilities, it removes the condition such as "if" or "when" with "on switch-in", so for example: Chlorophyll :whimsicott: goes from "Doubles the pokemon's speed if it is in harsh sunlight." to: "Doubles the pokemon's speed on switch-in." These retain the original effects, and do stack.

For moves, it removes any conditions or opportunities for failure in the move, so for example: Upper Hand :hitmonchan: will always be usable.

New Bans:
  • :golem: Sturdy :golem:. It keeps the pokemon immortal to anything but chip damage.
  • :weezing-galar: Neutralizing gas :weezing: ruins the fun.
  • :empoleon: Defiant :kingambit: and Competitive :empoleon: give a free +2 on switch with no way to lower it.
  • :krookodile: Anger point :krookodile: gives a free belly drum :hariyama:, must I explain?
  • :dragonite: Multiscale :dragonite: now halves all damage.
  • :glimmora: Protect :glimmora: and its variants will always be usable and will be quite annoying
  • :hitmonchan: Upper hand :hitmonchan: and fake out :incineroar: as well will always flinch.
Watches:
  • :whimsicott: Weather abilities could get pretty annoying.
  • :clefable: Cute charm :clefable: might be bad.
  • :moltres: Flame body :moltres: and other abilities (static :zapdos: , poison point :clodsire:, etc. ) might be good at spreading status in a bad way.
  • :ursaluna: Guts :ursaluna:, flare boost :drifblim:, and much more all give an according stat boost.
  • :toxapex: Regenerator :toxapex: now heals 2/3 of max hp.
  • :miraidon: Quark drive :iron valiant: and protosynthesis :roaring moon: are now free.
Neat Stuff:
  • Belly drum :hariyama: and substitute :greninja: can now kill :togedemaru: you.
  • Bombirdier :bombirdier: now gets 1.5x damage on all attacks.
  • Analytic :porygon2: is now a free life orb :garchomp:

I had a similar idea in mind, but I gave up, considering the inconsistances :

1) Your premise states that abilities and moves always activate/land, without the conditions they're bound with to do so. Then in your New Bans section, for example, you say that Upper Hand and Fake Out "will always flinch", except Inner Focus exists. Does that mean that moves would also bypass abilities ?

2) Moves and abilities are originally working with a condition because they're dependant of the flow of actions in a turn, so you must create a new condition to erase the previous ones, which you did, precising they're now working on switch-in. But then, how would abilities and moves with prior-condition work (Like Weather Ball or Cursed Body for example) ?

Lastly, there has been a playable OM in the past, involving permanent effects, called Battlefields. Your suggestion is a somewhat extended version of it, and I don't feel like it has enough originality to make the difference.

Fused fusions
Metagame premise:
You can name Pokémon after different Pokémon (and their forms) to fuse their stats, fuse their types, have access to both move sets, and have access to some of their abilities (the template is Ubers) How fusing stats work: whatever makes the highest base stat total using 3 of one Pokémon stats and 3 of the other. For example a fusion of ursaluna and sylveon in stats would be hp:130,attack:140,defence:105,special attack:110,special defence:130,speed:60. The player can choose the types. If the Pokémon share a type and a dual type (not the same dual type, for example two grass/fighting types) they will be a mono type of the ST or the dual type of the non shared types. For example a fusion between a dragon/steel type and a dragon/water type, the options of the types would be either pure dragon or water/steel.If the Pokémon share a type and one is dual type and the other is mono type they will be a mono type of the non shared type. For example a fusion between a pure normal type and a normal/flying type would be a pure flying type. The abilities are supposed to be the best, for example a fusion between alolan golem and rampardos, the abilities would be galvanize, magnet pull and mold breaker. (The abilities can not be from only one Pokémon and the minimum of abilities is 1 if the fused Pokémon only have one same ability)
Potential bans and threats: Huge power/pure power because now any Pokémon with a decent attack can utilise fully the ability. Blissey/chansey because 255/250 hp would make any pokemon with a decent defence stat hard to kill.
Questions for the community: What would be a better name for fused fusions and does the name express the premise well enough? What specific pokemon/abilities did I miss that would be a potential threat/ban?

Potential bans and threats: Huge power/pure power because now any Pokémon with a decent attack can utilise fully the ability. Blissey/chansey because 255/250 hp would make any pokemon with a decent defence stat hard to kill.
Questions for the community: What would be a better name for fused fusions and does the name express the premise well enough? What specific pokemon/abilities did I miss that would be a potential threat/ban?
I don’t mean to be rude but this just sounds like a more complicated version of frantic fusions.

What about the hp stat or the types and sharing both move sets? Also that should not matter what pokemon is the base and what pokemon is not, and fusions are supposed to be equal with the stats not a full base stat total of one and a quarter of the other that should be half and half to make a full base stat total.

Mismatched
Metagame premise:
Pokèmon have their abilities are fused and separated for example, Altaria would have Cloud Cure (While this Pokèmon is active, it has it’s non-volatile status condition cured) and Natural Nine (The effects of weather conditions are disabled when this Pokèmon switches out) Ubers is the template
Potential bans and threats: Pokèmon with 1 ability and Pokèmon with 3 abilities since they remained unchanged.
Questions for the community: What would be a better name for mismatched and does the name express the premise well enough? What specific pokemon did I miss that would be a potential threat/ban? How can I make Pokèmon with 3 abilities work without they having 6 abilities to choose from or arbitrary choosing which abilities fuse with which abilities?

Hello Minotaur08, I think your idea is more suited for PetMod than OMs. Mixing abilities to make variants would require a complete explanation of their functionning and so for each pair or abilities, plus coding new abilities (since they don't exist yet). The difference with Pokebilities being that you take the first part of one ability then add the last part of the other, I doubt the added value during battle.

Just to give you an example, if you mix Feraligatr Torrent and Sheer Force, it would either "power up Water-type moves while removing any additional effects" or "increase the moves' power when the Pokémon's HP is low" (words taken from the gen 9 abilities description, see on bulbapedia), which is good, but I would have too choose one of the abilities when in Pokebilities I can have both.

Hope I didn't bring you down, my past ideas didn't make the cut until now so I know how it's hard to renew OMs.
