Minior Discussion

I'm not sure what you mean by "boost" its defenses. The defenses are 60/100/100 and then they drop. The ability boosts the attack and speed. And yes, it is immune to status above 50% HP.

And people are making it out to be pretty damn good.
Serebii says it under its ability that it has high defense so I was wondering if that might boost its actual defensive stats.

Minior isnt OU material by anymeans. It is weak to SR, Bullet punch and other priorty moves. Its also not very bulky. Scizor is going to have a field day.

Serebii often is pretty vague with their descriptions.

Lategame sweeper after any priority has been removed. You don't typically use your Smash on any Smash user until you're sure it'll be safe.
 
Quiet and Naughty are what you want. The only thing that actually beats Minior is priority. Since almost all priority moves are physical, by choosing a -spdef nature instead of -def, you let your Minior survive, for example, Aqua Jet in sun or non-SE priority moves from unboosted Pokemon, more reliably, since you won't be hit to exactly 50% HP every time, unfortunately.

Adamant/Jolly and Modest/Timid are bad because, as we saw before, you don't need the speed from Jolly and Timid to outspeed everything and because you give up the ability to be a mixed sweeper by choosing one of those. When you're at 50% or less with Minior you're not expecting to survive another attack so there's no point trying to preserve your defenses much but with a -spdef nature you have just enough defense to survive more often because you'll realistically be hit to 35-45%, not 50% on the dot. In the long run it could save your Minior many times.
I'm a little confused. Isn't Quiet +Sp.Atk -Spe? Or did you mean Rash (+sp.atk -sp.def)? If uninvested with no speed outpaces the meta after a shell smash, wouldn't quiet be detrimental?

44 Atk Technician Mega Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Minior: 188-224 (72 - 85.8%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Before Shields Down takes effect, by the way. Afterwards, it's a straight OHKO.

It absolutely needs Reflect to do anything in OU. Or a Gravity and Psychic Terrain.

Sorry, I must have made a mistake. In order to avoid mistakes, the best natures for Minior are +atk/spatk and -spdef.
 
Or just make sure its counters are taken care of before setting up. Why set up a frail Pokemon to sweep when the Pokemon it's fodder to is still around?

Serebii just copied what the Minior reveal video said months ago. They didn't update the site with datamined info yet.

Pretty much yes. Every Pokemon is going to have something that ruins it's day. If they didn't then they'd go right to ubers.

No one would want Minior to be able to set up and then sweep you without any counters.

I did a bunch of calculations earlier today and learned that even with 0 speed investment the only unboosted thing that outspeeds a Minior with Shell Smash in OU right now is Weavile with a Choice Scarf.

Anyway, here, I did a bunch, these are assuming you are in unarmored form and a Shell Smash used.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the armored form is immune to status effects, so no need to worry about stuff like Klefki while you're setting up.

Also, this is funny but even with absolutely no speed investment, Minior has 1 more speed than max speed Excadrill, so Minior outspeeds and OHKOs any non-Air Balloon Excadrill, even in sand.

However, Minior is beat by Mega Slowbro and Sableye, Ferrothorn if you're not careful, Hippowdon, Tyranitar, any Azumarill, Landorus-T.

Though since you outspeed anything with shell smash, I think you can invest fully in both atk and spatk and run a mixed set. Almost nothing can switch into Minior besides stuff like Mega Aggron.
Landorus-T destroys Minior though so maybe HP Ice is gonna be a thing if it's srs since it also lets you beat Garchomp. I don't know.
Show ALL of those calcs to someone out of context - and that would sound scary...
 
The thing about the calculations I made earlier is that they only consider Pokemon relevant during the ORAS metagame. They did not include the new Pokemon, Alola forms nor buffed Pokemon.

Of course, I took the time to remedy that. I made calculations using +2 Minior against every new Pokemon, Alola form, UB, buffed relevant Pokemon and all of Silvally's forms. This way we'll be ahead of the curve instead of being awestruck at Minior's numbers and then caught with out pants down when we forget there are over 100 new Pokemon to account for. Well, in other words, I did calculations for Minior's main moves (Acrobatics, Stone Edge, EQ, Power Gem, Dazzling Gleam, Solar Beam and Psychic) so now we can see how my favorite fares against the new Pokemon. Note I made ran at least two calculations against every Pokemon: one against them with minimum defensive investment, one with maximum defensive investment and another with 252 HP. If they are OHKOed by Acrobatics with maximum defensive investment I often ended calculations against that Pokemon there because you don't need help in that case. Anyway, here they are:

Minior has so much potential. People are going to be desperate to keep their priority users alive just so they have something to check it and that in itself will lead to some interesting mindgames.

Okay, I think I know what you're suppose to do here: Keep using Shell Smash (maybe Cosmic Power; Stealth Rock if you want) until Shields Down activates, then sweep while your opponent tries to wittle away at you. GG.

I did not think Minior will get THAT good of a stat change when Shield Down activates. Heck, the defense decrease it goes through isn't even that bad, especially if you use Cosmic Power a few times before its time to go all out.

It also gets the moves it would ever want. Let's shake things up and start with utilities: Shell Smash, Cosmic Power, Stealth Rock, U-turn, Substitute, dual screens, and Explosion (and Autotomize and Double Team). Do what you want, Minior just wants to make you happy. Then when it comes to doing the business its STABs can go Physical (Stone Edge/Rock Slide & Acrobatics), Special (Power Gem... that's pretty much it), or mixed. If you somehow have room left you could also slap on Double-Edge/Return, Earthquake, Psychic, and Dazzling Gleam.

Yes, I'm getting a Minior.

What about running HP Fire? Otherwise this set has some trouble with levitating Steel types.

All the calcs I made were with Minior in unarmored form a few posts above. If you can OHKO Minior then it will be useless. If you have something with Focus Sash or Priority then you will also take Minior down. Another thing that beats Minior is Landorus-T if your Minior does not have HP Ice. Anything with Bullet Punch that is sent out at the same time as unarmored Minior will also kill it.

However, as you can see from my calcs, if you do not have a priority user, something with a focus sash or something that RESISTS ALL of its moveset, you have very little chance. Worst of all is the calcs I did even accounted for the enemy using maximum defensive investment and they still all got OHKOed or 2HKOed.

There's not much point to it. The thing is, even if Minior can't OHKO Landorus-T without HP Ice, it outspeeds Landorus-T and does enough damage that it won't even try to switch in on you unless it predicts EQ. If it predicts wrong you'll just 2HKO before it can react.

Your strategy with Minior is to have a team that can "smoothen" the landscape and get rid of any priority users then send Minior in because it can easily take a game on its own after the enemy Scizor/M-Garchomp are dead. Minior is so versatile, too, because it can work in Sand and Sun, so you can "splash," using card game terms, Minior into a lot of teams and make it part of the strategy. You can even choose a Minior color that fits your team <3
 
I REALLY love this Pokemon. Definitely one of my favorites this gen, along with Toxapex and Mimikyu. Gamefreak you are too good to me. (Even though you made half the gen slower than Magcargo >_> )
 
I was only planning to use Minior in-game after those Train On videos threw my heart into a meat grinder, but the more I read in this topic the more excited I get for the possibility of one of my new favorite 'mons being competitively viable.
 
If you go below 50% HP and activate Shields Down and then switch out, does Minior stay in its exposed forme when you bring it back in?

People have talked about its Shell Smash set, but what about a suicide lead or Dual Screens set?

This mon can actually benefit from its sr weakness if you give it an even hp number and use substitute to activate shields down. A set of sub/smash/edge/quake could be good in uu. In ou I think it's too hard to sweep because of priority.

This could have potential. I prefer shell smash as the last move though. You're probably not gonna get the chance to set up sr and sm most of the time but when you and your opponent both exchange rocks you can and that explosion will certainly do massive damage to any non-ghost type.
 
I can see Lycanrock's Accelerock being a pain for Minior (as well Ice Shard, Aqua Jet and well... any other priority attack except for Quick Attack).
