MLB 2013 Season Thread

I just got back from the Dodger game. I haven't seen the stadium that loud ever. It was an awesome baseball game outside of the brawl and the fact that it was free beach chair night. Ian Kennedy can go die in a hole, but I have so much more respect for Miguel Montero now.

I'm glad you got to see the one game where a late game hit w/ RISP was possible. What I took away from it was that the season is salvageable and that Greinke is a tick beyond fearless.

Can we get instant replay yet? We lost on a walk-off ground ball on which Kipnis interfered with the throw by running three feet into the infield grass.

No. Look at the replay again, look at the explanation for runner interference, look at his position, look at Kipnis ducking out of the way. Complain at how your team isn't hitting, or something, but don't grasp at something when it doesn't exist, or at least recognise the bias that makes you observe it incorrectly.

I didn't say it was the only reason we lost. And I'm having trouble seeing how what Kipnis did doesn't fall under the line that says a baserunner can't interfere with a fielder's ability to throw a ball. He ran in between LaRoche and home plate causing LaRoche to have to throw the ball behind home plate.

He ran to first base. There's nothing more to it than that, and pretending there is is just silly.

For reference, the rule per MLB - (the runner is out when..) "(b) He intentionally interferes with a thrown ball; or hinders a fielder attempting to make a play on a batted ball;"

He intentionally interfered with a thrown ball, though. He was three feet into the grass in order to be between LaRoche and home plate. He might have ducked as it went by him but it didn't actually go through his path. He blocked the through that would have potentially got the ball to home in time.

"In running the last half of the distance from home base to first base, while the ball is being fielded to first base, he runs outside (to the right of) the three-foot line, or inside (to the left of) the foul line, and in the umpire’s judgment in so doing inter- feres with the fielder taking the throw at first base, in which case the ball is dead; except that he may run outside (to the right of) the three-foot line or inside (to the left of) the foul line to avoid a fielder attempting to field a batted ball;"

FYI, his right foot was inside the 3 feet area, but THIS RULE does not matter.

Running to first base is NOT interference. There is no extra intention beyond running to the base to block the throw, which deems it entirelly legal. Running to bases is not against the rules.

So Jarred Cosart went 8 scoreless innings with 2 hits to end the Rays' 8-game winning streak for his MLB debut. I wonder if the Astros already gave him away since the game's end, or if they even waited until the end of the game.
Anyway, since the analysts are all about stupid stats that don't mean anything, when was the last time a pitcher pitched 8 or more scoreless innings and allowed 2 or fewer hits in his Major League debut on the road against the previous year's Sy Young winner whose team was on an 8-game or higher winning streak?

Edit: His or her Major League debut... just to make sure there isn't any funny business.

Excerpt from Matthew Berry's (the fantasy football guy) new book Fantasy Life about cheating in Fantasy:

1. That's How You Win a Fantasy League
"Zack" was working for the Florida Marlins in 2007 and towards the end of year, the Marlins were well out of the race. Zack's fantasy team, however, was very much alive. Playing for the title in a head-to-head fantasy baseball league during the last week of the season, Zack accompanied the team on an end-of-the-year road trip to play the Mets in New York City.
The night in question was Friday, September 28, 2007, and all Zack needed for his title was one last great starting pitching performance along with a win. From John Maine of the Mets. Who was pitching the next afternoon at 1:00 PM against the Marlins.
It was against this backdrop that Zack and his buddy arrived that Friday night to a bar with some of the team and shared a drink with a few Marlins players. And after they all hoisted a few, an interesting, if not exactly kosher, idea occurred to Zack.
"All we need to do is a get a few more of them drunk and my boy Maine should cruise through the lineup."
Fast forward to midnight. Zack continues, "Some front office staff, a lot of players, a couple of female sales interns, and myself meet up at a trendy bar. Drinks were flowing. The bullpen was buying..."
Note to self: Make friends with more relievers.
"... But I was buying more to make sure they got extra rowdy."
Apparently, the party was just beginning. Back at the hotel after closing, Zack says, "We proceeded to play 'Mexican Shotgun,' which was a game I made up on the spot. It consisted of shotgunning a beer and chasing it with tequila (courtesy of the minibar). The next morning, I felt like crap but I also felt confident in unleashing Maine as my last starter to grab a title."
Google the box score for the Mets-Marlins game on Sept 29, 2007. That day, John Maine went 7 and 2/3 innings, giving up just one hit, two walks, and the Mets cruised to a 13-0 win.
"The box score credits the win to John Maine, but deep inside I know that W was earned by me. I went on to win that final week of fantasy and the season, with the John Maine win and his sterling WHIP being the clincher..."

I recently got to see the Cardinals play against the Cubs at Wrigley field and win 10-6 last Sunday, but I did not get to see the following:

Incredibly boring season as a Reds fan, what with being basically locked into a wild card the entire season. Not going to catch both the Pirates and Cards (if even one), other divisions aren't worth a crap beyond their frontrunners.

Yeah, the NL only has one division where its winner hasn't yet been decided, that being the NL Central. Shame the Nats are a huge disappointment, and the NL West was tight until the Dodgers went (are still going) on their run.

I really wanted to see Kershaw vs Wainwright tonight, but it'll be just as fun to beat up on the former Brewer, Greinke.

I'm torn, having A-Rod back will be an improvement at third base, but he will also be a huge distraction for the rest of the season. Hell tonight's Yankees/White Sox game is going to be covered like the 7th game of the World Series if he is playing.

Also Jeter should just take the rest of this season off if this keeps happening. I don't need to be teased anymore with him coming back, playing a few games before ending up back on the DL.

Suspensions were handed out earlier regarding players' roles in the Biogenesis scandal, the most significant being to the Padres' Everth Cabrera, Tigers' Jhonny Peralta, and Rangers' Nelson Cruz. Bartolo Colon and Melky Cabrera managed to avoid further suspension, as they had already served suspension time before due to PEDs.

No word on an A-Rod suspension... yet.
