MLB 2013 Season Thread

It was funny seeing A-rod signing autographs before that game. It seem like he was thinking "Hey, people still liked me!", while the fans were thinking "Hey, I can sell this on ebay!".

Also, the Braves have won 11 straight, I've never seen the NL East this lopsided before...

211 games is the number i heard most
not sure the actual number matters too much, it's basically 162 games (next season) + the rest of this season if it gets held up.

before the Phillies got good there were a lot of lopsided division finishes, mostly the late 90's/early 2000's Braves. the Mets won in '06, and basically every year there was one good team and everyone else was either around .500 or terrible.

basically all the Braves' hitters have gotten hot at once, which is good for now but the timing is about 8 weeks too early. can't wait for another September/October collapse!

Rodriguez's suspension will not be decided based on games played - people are throwing down numbers that match with the season left + next season, but the suspension itself will be the entire remaining season + playoffs , and next season + playoffs. Rodriguez is being treated as a special case, that's some weird combination of the Joint Drug Agreement and Selig's subjective madness, whereas the others are being treated strictly first time abusers in the Joint Drug agreement.

Selig's vendetta against Rodriguez is a bit silly to me, because based on the letter of the JDA, he shouldn't be able to ban him for the arbitrary period he chooses. For him, I guess the message of banning Rodriguez is more important in comparison to the contractual agreements the PA and MLB have with one another.

From what I understand Rodriguez is a bit of a special case because he not only participated in the Biogenesis program but actively sought to hinder investigations and to hide evidence and, more importantly, actively recruited other players into the program, condoning and encouraging cheating.

An interesting footnote is that of the 13 players suspended 5 of them are current or recent Yankee players.

the yankees are absolutely pitiful, swept by the goddamn white sox. someone get jeter back in that lineup

It's a wonder how they're still above .500 with Cano as their only offensive threat for most of the season and an ineffective pitching staff outside of Kuroda.

Last night was absolutely disgusting. I don't think even Jeter can save this lineup right now. No one is hitting, Cano hasn't had a home run in forever before the one he hit last night.

Not to mention his lack of hustle that let him get picked off at 2nd base the other day. This team is looking pretty pathetic.

Eh he showed his age for once. More surprising to me was how the Yanks somehow took 2/3 from Detroit...

Miguel Cabrera once again assures us he's the best hitter in baseball (as if he needed to do that).

So, how about that kickass Rangers pitching staff? If we make the playoffs we'll have Nellie back for it - watch out American League!

I was watching the Dodgers game last night and I still can't believe how good Kershaw is. It was only a matter of time until the Dodgers came around with all of that talent and Kershaw/Greinke as their 1/2. That Korean guy isn't half bad either.

"That Korean guy" is better then Greinke imo. Ryu is a monster

Also WHY ASTROS WHY

Darvish should pitch well against REAL teams guys like it's the Astros anyone can do it ugh he's so bad...

Dodgers may have the best 1-2-3 pitching punch in all of baseball. A few weeks ago, I would've said the Cardinals did, with Waino, Lynn, and Miller. And their #5, Nolasco, can be a #3 on most teams.

Rangers also have an excellent 1-2-3 with the acquisition of Garza to go with Yu and Holland.

Anyone following this Braves/Nationals HBP shit? #drama

It started last week, when Harper hit a home run off the Braves' starter in Washington. In his next at bat, Harper got hit on the very first pitch, and a fight was possibly only avoided thanks to a quick intervention by the home plate umpire. The Braves insist that it was an accident, of course (it was a one-run game, but it's not like any one game matters that much when you're that far ahead), while Harper and the Nats insist it was on purpose thanks to his slow trot around the bases after his home run.

Then, last night, Harper was hit not once, but twice. The first one was a curveball to the arm, and thus unlikely to have been "intentional," but the second was a fastball near the neck that was cheered by the fans. It was in another close game, and the pitcher for the second hit was not ejected but was removed from the game.

Then, today, Bryce Harper was held out of the game due to a bruised arm (I guess from the first hit yesterday?). After Heyward hit a home run in the 1st off Strasburg, the next batter Justin Upton was (somewhat expectedly) hit by a pitch. Had that been it, things probably would have boiled over, but some pitching shenanigans went on in the 2nd. After a long break in the top of the 2nd, where the Nationals had like eight batters come up to the plate in addition to a rain delay, Strasburg walked the first Atlanta batter on four pitches. Then, with a guy on first, Strasburg proceeded to throw three straight wild pitches, including two BEHIND Simmons. Maybe it was the long break, but the umpire didn't want to take the chance that he was trying to hit Simmons and ejected Strasburg promptly.

Hopefully no one gets badly hurt before this is over. The teams still have three games in Washington in addition to the game tomorrow.

They let Strasburg go only one inning before letting go of the reigns. The Gnats must finally be mailing it in for this season.

Yeah, Braves fans are pretty classless. They're up like 16 games and they are more concerned with how "punchable"* Harper's face is than how their team is playing. From looking at message boards I would wager that this season Braves fans have typed Harper ten to twenty times more than Nats fans. They literally can not stop talking about him. And they cheer Harper being hit but if you ask them all three were unintentional AND YET they'll also say Harper deserves it for pimping his home run despite him rounding the bases four seconds faster than J. Upton did when he watched his homer that same game.

In general they have an inferiority complex toward the Nats when their team has dominated the division historically and our team has one winning season in the nine they've existed. They constantly complain about how ESPN constantly covers Harper and the Nats instead of them even though they're winning and yet they don't realize that they are probably the biggest consumers of these stories. They prowl every corner of the internet looking for stories about the Nats/Harper so they can jump in and start flame wars/whine fests.
