Anybody think that Bryce Harper and Steven Strausburg would have a lot of potential in the majors if they were drafted into the majors in their current state? Even if they were in the Washington Nationals i dont really think that they have enough to carry to whole team to playoffs.

Steven Strasburg is a special case because yes, he throws >100 mph. However pitching college ball isn't anything like pitching in the majors. It's better for him to get acclimated to progressively bigger and bigger crowds and stadiums. As a guy who's played baseball in a league before, the difference is incredible. You look out into the stands and think "oh shit I can't screw up". There have been a ton of great prospects that have just fizzled because they can't perform under pressure. Am I saying Strasburg will fizzle? No. I'm saying he might, which is why I'd rather put him in the minors for a little while and call him up September 2010.

apply for a job as a newscaster because that is the exact kind of cliché thing someone on nbc would say rofl

Lol I'm going to be broadcasting the morning announcements at my school next year, a la Strangerdanger (sans beard).

On topic, can we get rid of the WBC, and put baseball into the winter olympics? It's clear that guys can't handle a full on tournament THEN spring training THEN the season. Its like going from zero to 60, which is what spring training is supposed to avoid. Putting baseball in the winter olympics allows a short rest before spring training. Maybe I'm just bitter since Kevin Youkilis, Dustin Pedroia, and Daisuke Matsuzaka all started injured in some capacity.

EDIT: Looked up Bryce Harper. Holy fuck what is that kid doing? You'll be a #1 pick if you wait two years to finish your education. I mean being compared to Lebron is great and all, but what happens if he gets injured or he cracks? Same as Strasburg, give him a year in the minors and see how he does. Start him in AAA for all I care, I just wouldn't risk him getting smashed his first time.

Jose Canseco, Mark McGuire, Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez, and now Sammy Sosa. The sad part is they're all going to make it to the hall of fame, and Pete Rose, who has the all-time hit record WITHOUT ROIDS, isn't. "There's something wrong with the world today/I don't know what it is/Something's wrong with our eyes".
I would be shocked if all of those names made it into the hall of fame. Didn't McGwire already miss being voted in in his first year of eligibility?

I agree that it's a travesty that Pete Rose isn't in the hall of fame though.

Its a total shame that nowadays Pete Rose spends the remainder of his time signing baseballs in meet and greets in Las Vegas. Honestly, every time i go to Las Vegas there is nearly always a sign about Pete Rose Signatures

Rays/Jays who? Flip and Flop is more like it. The Rays just can't compete with a rejuvenated Yankees lineup AND the same Red Sox with a deeper pitching staff

the rays actually have the highest scoring offense in the game (~30 more runs than the "rejuvenated" yankees lineup), and best run differential in the game. they've just lost a bunch of close games. if they can get a healthy kazmir back and patch together a bullpen (price should be used there), i fully expect them to compete until the bitter end, and possibly steal away another playoff berth from the yankees/sox.

meanwhile my mets are flailing. good thing nobody wants to win the NL east.

GUH. My Angels could have first place due toe the Rangers sucking if they wouldn't lose to the DODGERS.

The Dodgers may have the best record in Baseball but to me they are not even close to the league's best team they're just in a super shitty division. Even the Giants who are showing a great improvement and the Rockies who are making good progress are really not as great as their records show imo. I think that the Red Sox easily take the cake for the best in MLB at this moment in time. Still haven't lost a game to the Yanks yet and are constantly taking series from great team after great team including 2/3 from the World Series Champs.

Roy Halladay is a beast as well. My god that is a scary fucking pitcher.

Ugh Angels 11-1 loss by the Rockies was embarrasing. Even if the Rockies are on a hot streak, the Angels had no reason to make 6 Wild Pitches. Whats happening!!!!!

It has been a weird season so far.

It hasent been that SUSPENSE!!! in the last 2months.

Injurys have been around the league and slumps that wont go away.
Like the Mets, lossing 3 of there Key players, BELTRAN,REYES,AND DELGADO. very the sad =/.

And the Yankees Chieng-Meng Wang. 2 back to back seasons with 19Wins.
He tripped on a Base, and everything changed, has been Winless for 1year and some change its just wow.

Angels, Vlad Guerrero. Hasent hit a Home Run since woooooooff!!! who knows. And Tigers Ordonez, Last years MVP candidate. This year hes a candidate to be trade. =/ idk Cardinals are looking real good, Now with DeRosa. we just gotta wait till the end of September when everything starts to fall in place.

dunno why the indians traded derosa so early. seems like they could've gotten a bit more if they hung on to him.

either way, derosa isnt gonna provide protection for pujols. i'd pitch around him every time to get to derosa. it amazes me pujols sees pitches to hit every day.

Yeah because teams are willing to buy a slumping power hitter in this economy with a 50/50 shot "he'll turn around". The Tigers are still in first with or without him, why give him up for a couple of mediocre prospects, which is all he'd get at the moment.

I'm going to bet that there won't be any blockbuster deals in the foreseeable future, nobody is on the market since everyone is in the hunt. The only thing I could possibly see is the Indians trying to move Cliff Lee for a package of major-league ready prospects, or the A's moving Matt Holliday.

@aamto:

I heard it was him or Holliday, and the Cards are already taxed payroll-wise to begin with. Better than nothing I guess.

oops, i meant why the INDIANS traded derosa. obviously it was a great trade for the cardinals.

the indians traded derosa because they know that they cannot compete in that division and being the small market team they are they wanted to maximize his value (which they did). props to both teams for getting exactly what they needed to make their teams better (in the future, in the indians case.) it is a good trade for the cardinals because no one in that division has pulled away yet and this might put some distance between them and the brewers/cubs.

in related news, what does everyone think about the all star selections? how the hell did jon lester not make it?

Wakefield's been having the better season, and I'm going to assume the "every team gets one player" rule came into play somewhere along the line. The Red Sox have 6 players on the roster for crying out loud, more than any other team in both leagues.

it's true that wakefield has more wins, but his era is sky high for an all star (4.30). actually, looking at the stats now lester shouldn't have been selected, but kevin millwood definitely should have. in any case, i believe wakefied only got the nod because he is a) old b) a knuckleballer and c) this is his first selection.

Did anyone watch the Reds-Phillies game yesterday? The final score was 22-1, the worst loss in the Redlegs' history. As a Cincy fan, I'm kinda disappointed that they would allow 22 runs. It was 10-0 after the first inning. >.>

American League will win the all-star game again this year.

Predictions:
AL / NL
Yankees / PHILS EAST
Red Sux / Mets WC
Tigers / Cardinals CEN
Texas / Dodgers WEST

lol... watching the Marlins at Giants game. Randy Winn was going to make a foul ball catch, but a fan interfered with the catch and the ball was dropped. The umpire called it an out, but the fan was clearly distraught as he was booed by his own hometown. The fan left the field immediately with hands his on head in embarrassment.

I think the yanks might settle with the wild card this year. Since they can't beat Boston one friggin time! But, I'm still happy with the way they're playing this year...better than last year at least...

Not exactly. For one, Halladay is one of THE best, if not the best starting pitcher in major league. What does that mean? A high price. Unless Toronto gets a quality, very high quality offer, he won't leave. However, he has given a list of teams he's willing to play for.

If anything, the team is showing that they will not resign him past 2010 anyways, so this is the best move. Don't let him walk away for almost nothing.

I am proud to be living in SF! Go Giants.. that no hitter was sick. coulda been a perfect game if it wasnt for a ground ball error -.-.
