The Smogon Monthly Art Contest!

Banner_thingy_by_Buckberry.png

Welcome to the fifth ever Smogon Monthly Art Contest! A competition for both digital and traditional artists to show their stuff and boast their skills.

Good gracious, it's been 5 months already (my favorite number, hooray!). Last month's entries were nothing short of PHENOMENAL! Congratulations to everyone who participated, you all should be very proud of yourselves! I realize I haven't updated the Hall of Fame recently, so you can expect additions to it sometime next week if not this week. Now, on with the show! Good luck everyone ^__^

This Month's Theme: Fossil Fantasy
Theme suggestion by ColdRain

Description: Draw your very own fossil fakemon! Your entry must include both the fakemon and the fossil it originates from. If you want, you can include an evolutionary stage.

Plus Points For: You must "show" us a story in your picture, and NOT with words! If your Pokemon was born from the fiery depths of a volcano, don't tell us, show us! If your Pokemon enjoys wreaking havoc on innocent Octillery in the dark depths of the ocean, don't tell us, show us!
Be creative and have fun!

In it to win it. Fun theme, it will certainly test the creativity of artists here.

EDIT: Just thought of what to draw. Get ready.

It's good to be back, and looks like a great theme!

I doubt they can smell of chaos! (Someone please follow me up on something smelling of chaos).

I find it kinda funny that I already designed a fossil pokemon a couple months before.

Does that mean I can use it or do I have to make another one? D;

make another of course, we dont want any sloppy seconds so make another one twice as good.

Good theme! Showing a story in the picture certainly sounds interesting, but what's this about the fossil it originates from? Are we supposed to use a real fossil or make one up ourselves? Are we supposed to incorporate this into the picture or have it as a separate picture? Because I think having both the fossil and the Fakemon in the same picture kinda disrupts the story. Can I get more clarification on this?

Wait, so we are only drawing one picture? I don't know about others, but I would rather draw the fakemon in its natural habitat and time . . . in which case, there would still be no fossils of it!

Could we just include supporting pictures like with CAP? In the main picture, I would just rather focus on capturing a well illustrated scene of the beast in its natural habitat, and not worry about including a picture of the fossil you would use.

@Fatecrashers & ChouToshio: It's not necessarily where the fossil originates from, I was just giving an example of incorporating some sort of story in the image, and depicting the fakemon's origins seems like the easiest thing, but you can choose to tell whatever sort of story you want. The fossil just needs to be somewhere in the image, it doesn't even have to be noticeable. The challenge is to incorporate both into one picture. We can't let this thing be too easy for you guys afterall ;) I'm sure you'll come up with something brilliant. Best of luck!

@DJGopher: You can include regular Pokemon as well, so long as you also meet the theme requirements.

@Atlas: The size restrictions are so that the judging process and poll posts are more manageable.

This sounds like a fun MAC! Can't wait to see the drawings that artists come up with this time around ^_^

Bucky, I think they meant that having both the creature and the fossil in the same image would present an anachronism. If a fossil exists, the creature really has no chance of also being present and alive. Forcing them together is sort of an arbitrary challenge, something along the lines of requiring all the artists to draw with their non-dominant hand. :]

The fossil and the creature could be in two separate canvases. The few ideas that I could come up with with the current rules are a textbook format with "photos" presented of the fossil and the creature along with random text and a laboratory setting with both fossils and revived creature.

AAAAH I RUINED IDEAS

Scepticallistic expressed my thoughts exactly, the only way I could see the fossil and the Fakemon being in the same picture without the fossil looking weird and out of place is if the fossil picture was in its own separate little box and inset into an artist's rendering of what the Fakemon's natural environment would've been like. I'm sure you could find an example of what I'm talking about in most good encyclopedias.

EDIT: Having a MAC where we all draw with our non-dominant hand would be lolsworthy

Considering fossil pokemon have to be revived from their state, it's not too odd to have them in the same picture. The pokemon can still be in its own natural habitat during present time, but only after receiving this reincarnation. I suppose if someone released a fossil pokemon into the wild, it would certainly search for an environment in which it is most comfortable, most likely being close to what their natural environment was long ago. Who knows; the fossils just might be where the pokemon decides to live!

It's good to think outside the box, and I'm sure all of the artists will find their own way of incorporating the fossil into the artwork in a way that's both creative and pleasing.

Oh god every month I'm like "I really don't have time for the MAC" and every month has a fun prompt...

I am VERY inspired, let's see what I can do.

Amazing prompt this time!

guys go freaking read Dinotopia

I see what you mean, but it's not completely ridiculous to have a fossil and the revived Pokemon present at the same time. Just think about Pokemon DPPt; you went underground, dug up a ton of stuff and probably managed to get 5 of the same kind of fossil, take them to the lab in Oreburg and you get one revived at a time. I think this particular theme will challenge our artists to think outside the box to meet requirements, something they must learn if they ever decide to go professional. I like to incorporate some sort of artistic benefit in each contest, and I don't really want to change the theme to fit two pictures each. But if a majority of the judges take a similar stance, then we'll change it.

So fellow judges, what do you say?

Is this acceptable?
Note: I mean is this what was asked for.. bg will be added, I just didnt want to go past a sketch if it would be rejected.
:D

Something along the lines of that, yes. Just don't forget to "show us a story" in your entry. I love that little guy though, he reminds me of Chomper from the Land Before Time!!! (Or was it Chompy? I forget).

Question:
Is it acceptable to have our Fakemon doing human-like things? Because I'm considering having my Fakemon pose in a parody of the 'Alas, Poor Yorrick' scene from Hamlet.

Ok I don't know what Bucky thinks but I'm just going to throw this out there:

when you're making your piece, you have TOTAL ARTISTIC AUTHORITY meaning you can make your drawings as cartoony, realistic, crazy, or abstract as you want. Just be sure to keep it within the rules of the contest, and remember: if you make something to crazy, the judges may not like it (although almost all of us are extremely kind and open to new ideas), so be careful how insane you make it.

tl;dr:
go ahead, Fatecrashers
