While you're foresighting, the opponent can attack, gather more boosts, sub, anything really. It's sort of useless if you foresight a sub and you're killed two turns later. They can Protect your foresight, sub the next one, protect, start attacking, whatever. If you actually try to apply these things in real battle, instead of sitting around and hypothesizing, you'll find it's really not practical, except in certain situations, if you're lucky.
You don't need to keep arguing Foresight with me. Not in this thread, anyway. The tangent I was on was about Evasion alone, and does not apply to a discussion about Inconsistent, which is what this thread is for. I've backed away from it in this thread, and it would be pertinent of you to do the same.

...also, Foresight works through Substitute.

One thing's been confusing me about this ability- Doesn't a stat also sharply drop in addition to the stat that sharply rises? Or was that a mistake?

Ah, I just thought of something. How might Trace fare against these guys?
trace works well, but isnt really a solid counter as it just causes you to rely on luck as much as they do, they can still stall you and if they hit a toxic you get screwed, my porygon2 with magic coat works sometimes, but i need to predict toxic right and get lucky with boosts to outspeed to hit behind his sub

if you swap in before he subs though, then you can hit him on the sub, to break it and magic coat toxic to poison him, screwing him over, but you still need to be lucky not to be unable to break the sub due to defense boosts, as well as predicting the toxic perfectly

if he has a sub up, he can toxic every turn, as you cant break the sub without taking a toxic hit

A stat will sharply increase(+2) and another stat will decrease(-1).

Ah, I see. That's why it's causing such a stir- I had thought it was +2 to a stat and -2 to another stat. Being only -1 to another stat means you have a net gain.

The ability seems similar to Speed Boost in usage. However, +2 to one stat and -1 to another stat is argueably better than +1 to a single stat with no downside. If you get a bad roll (say, it lowers your accuracy), you can just stall until it increases again. Looking at the list of the learners, Octillery stands out to me- great mixed offensive stats and good defensive stats, with his only serious low point being his speed- a spread that seems ideal for the kind of random boosting Inconsistent provides.

I'd call that pretty broken personally.

Question: Why did you leave Forretress in? You saw that he was throwing out Spore and Substitute. What gave you the idea that leaving something as slow as Forretress in was anything like a good idea?

Yeh even though I personally despise Inconsistent and think it should be banned from all ladders that log was a terrible example of it, since your opponent gave you an unbelievable amount of time to set up with Smeargle.

Question: Why did you leave Forretress in? You saw that he was throwing out Spore and Substitute. What gave you the idea that leaving something as slow as Forretress in was anything like a good idea?

He was the one with Smeargle.

Yes, you need to deal with Inconsistant early, before the boosts rack up, and he didn't in that battle, so he lost. He needed to switch to a PHazer, a Taunter or a never-miss attacker earlier, and he could well have beaten the Smeargle. And that is the problem with Inconsistant: there are so many ways that common users can be beaten.

Although his opponent played badly I'm not really sure what your plan is to beat Smeargle with taunting and Phazing since he'll either carry Magic Coat or have a Magic Mirror user to Baton Pass to. And never-miss attacks are near useless apart from a few poorly distributed moves. His opponent played badly but any switch-in would have been slept and quickly set up on. I'm not sure that you understand once an Inconsistent pokemon gets a sub up it becomes almost impossible to stop, especially one like Smeargle with access to every move in the game, the best of which is the ability to baton pass these boosts.

Yes it is, and considering the Smeargle that I was talking about did not have Magic Anything (count the moveslots) it could not have deal with either.

EDIT: That's true. I haven't seen many Espeons around but it definitely could. Maybe Mischevious Heart Taunt?

@Athenodoros Well he could have had Espeon to Baton Pass those boosts to and reflect phases.

@Enlong No, I mean if he'd switched forry out turn 1 the switch-in would have been slept and if he switched it out turn 2 Smeargle gets a sub up and 2 turns of boosts as well. Beating a Smeargle with a sub up is very difficult to do, virtually impossible if you're not carrying haze.

I have a pretty reasonable win rate with that team, which consists of only Smeargle and Garchomp, and I have a match against a less stupid opponent too.

Then your forced to forgo Spore which is generally a really really bad idea.
But i still agree inconsistence is just retarted.

lifting the evasion clause wouldn't make this as "broken".

then again, there are plenty of counters to inconsistent even with evasion clause.

I don't think this'll make Smogon ban Inconsistent - I'd rather think that Smeargle will be uber. Also, how about the idea to beat Inconsistent with Unaware, which makes the stalling for boosts completely meaningless?

Unaware is a completely viable ability on relatively useful pokemon. Don't bother mentioning bidoof. Clefable and Quagsire work very well. In the first log by the way, the opponent had Ice shard on smeargle, a pokemon with base 20 attack power...

>Implying Clefable can't toxic stall itself

But anyways, it will be more likely that the inconsistent Pokemon will become Uber rather than that the ability will be banned.

No, please don't suggest these pokemon will become uber, theres an evasion clause on ubers ladders as well and this thing does the same thing in that tier except it might require slightly more defensive boosts. If this thing is banned it should without doubt be banned from every ladder and not just OU>
