noise

noise is a really shitty umbrella term but 'whatever' lets talk about music. i have an affinity for anything with an engaging, repetitive beat. doesn't matter to me if it's fast or slow, with lyrics or without. the dronier, the better.

BOREDOMS

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVblTB-v2gk

japanese geniuses making tribal music from the future. while i was never into hanatarash since it's a bit too acrid for me, i find the melodies of boredoms to just leave me awash with some nameless feeling that i quite like. potent, hammering beats to keep you going, and 3:40 will really test your capacity to embrace the abrasive.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8u2qQeyoYRw

vision creation newsun is a fantastic album. neat bit of trivia: that flaming lips album about yoshimi? she's the drummer for this band. the intro and buildup here are unparalleled. nothing in the world gets me more excited than the first two minutes of this song, and the zenith is almost overwhelmingly gorgeous. boredoms show their twinkly side and it's so aurally scintillating that bands like toe would get all nervous and sweaty.

BIG BLACK

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxiCp6uSvcI

ok big black is one of the premier 'noise rock' bands and steve albini knows his shit, but the poor dude ruined his career by naming one of his bands 'rapeman'. steve!!!!!! the guitar is crunchy as fuck and i can't help but find this to be the catchiest song i've heard in recent months

LIARS

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mbsretji5r4&feature=related

i've probably mentioned this band in every single music thread ever but it's not without good reason. liars are an interesting band, to say the least. they change their sound drastically with every album (their first one was at the forefront of the early 2000s dance punk scene with forgotten names like !!! and the rapture). they are at times soothing, and at times fraught with an energy that can only leave you weakened and plagued by half-understood apocalyptic visions. this song is haunted by something but i don't know what it is.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xyln411hzpw&feature=related

liars, the album, had a few tunes like this one and freak out that make you think of bands like crocodiles until you realize that this came out a year and some before crocodiles even existed. oh liars, ahead of your time as usual. spectacularly drony and pounding with vocals that remind us weaker hearts that everything will probably be ok.

OVAL

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XoonfG7T4DU

before you turn this off for hurting your ears you need to hear it at a somewhat low volume through headphones of somewhat decent quality. it pivots between the grammars of cacophony and genuine, bare-bodied beauty. it's certainly not for everyone and it's alienating as fuck and it's probably way more pretentious than i wish it was but i really do like this song. i don't like a lot of works by oval because 'pure noise' starts to wear on me quite quickly, but there's just something about this song that resonates with me to the point that my own voice sounds hoarse and foreign afterwards. i don't know how to explain it but i really don't have to bucko!!!

EX MODELS

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K61Paua48yc

ROBOROCK. everything about zoo psychology is incredible. a feisty, frenetic series of acuate songs about fucking. punk wishes it was this punk.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tdsVWdKIgOw

this is when ex models got a hold of kid millions, dude from oneida. the results are very noticeable! chrome panthers isnt quite as fun as zoo psychology but its borderline asceticism is somehow charming. 40 seconds of inaudible vocals followed by 4 minutes of a continuous, unapologetic and abrasive hum.

does anyone here like stuff like this????????????????????

...No. (answer to your question)

Classic Rock is the way to go, I like music made primarily by instruments.

Any one who likes Classic Rock check out: Boston, Def Leppard, Mark Knopler/Dire Straits, The Eagles, Foreigner, George Thorogood, Styx, Meatloaf, Motley Crue, and Warrant.

Other random stuff I like: Billy Talent, Uncle Kracker, Thomson Square.

I would add in The Who, Led Zeppelin and Guns N' Roses to that list

Just turn on your local classic rock station and you'll hear those bands, likely in that order too. Or just go through your dad's record collection / playlists. Then don't listen to classic rock again lest ye go insane.

edit: oh we're going to get into the whole "real music" debate now. Would you honestly say that everything after 1986 is "fake music," or just commercialized, regurgitated garbage?

Anyways, to stay on topic, Devin Townsend's "The Hummer" is a great ambient / noise album. And don't worry, Devin makes "real music" too.

Thanks bro, I had never heard of Boston before. That "More Than a Feeling" song is good but I think they copied it from those Air Banders in Scrubs. And the Eagles totally ripped off that song in the Big Lebowski..

Liars are pretty hit and miss for me but I do like some of their songs (1 minute in or so.. playing instruments no less!!). Their self titled is pretty great. I could never get into Boredoms for whatever reason.

I've listened to some noise stuff that I can't remember off the top of my head. That Liars song that Carl posted was cool, and I like Big Black.

Also, before anybody mentions drone metal, it sucks. js

Okay you know how people always try to tell me that music is subjective and that my opinion is not fact? This is factually the worst abuse of the word classic in history. Also I think you mixed up the words instruments and voices.

Sorry to help shit on your topic Glen, I do not like noise rock so I have a lot more to say about this guy's extremely dumb post than noise rock!!

EDIT 2 actually it looks like Big Black - 1987 - Songs About Fucking managed to stay around on my computer...the album must have been pretty funny/quirky for me to keep around through my genre distaste!

honestly some of that stuff you posted Glen wasn't too too bad, I dunno if I'd ever listen to it again, guess you have to be in the right mood to appreciate it fully

lol at the embarrassing fucking rockism itt

boredoms are great, i like noise rock sometimes. glenn branca is the fucking man, also check out egor and the fuckups.

I absolutely love Big Black. Atomizer is one of my favorite albums ever. If any album should be re-issued, Atomizer is on the top of my list. I enjoy Liars as well, but I'm not too big on everyone else.

Here's a few "noise" based bands I really enjoy.

No Age
Glitter
Teen Creeps

No Age basically sounds like an unrefined version of Sonic Youth. They're a little more top heavy on the use of "noise", especially in their second album.

The Wrens
Boys You Won't Remember
She Sends Kisses

The Wrens are really great. They tend to have a more mellow vibe, but they have a really good ear for noise.

Shellac
Prayer to God

Lyrically, they're fantastic.

you are fucking retarded. do you listen to 'river below' when you're feeling angsty?

i dont dislike any of these bands (except gnr) but you live in the age of the internet. you can find anything and everything you could ever want to find and you're still stuck on 'dad rock'?

i had no intention of criticizing anyone's tastes in this thread but if you're breaking out the 'real music' shit then i probably won't be able to help myself in the future

edit: arch you posted probably my 2 favourite no age songs (though theyre both tied with boy void probably) but i was loath to include them because i felt like then i would have to include stuff like early wavves and times new viking since it's all distorted and abrasive too and i really just didnt wanna go down that route you know!!!!

I'm not sure how the Wrens are in this conversation, I'd just say they're an alt-rock band who changes it up here and there.

I have had little exposure to "noise", but I recently got Liars' Drum's Not Dead and kinda liked it. It didn't blow me away or anything, but I kept it around for future listening.

EDIT: Oh, and all you little (BAN ME PLEASE)s trolling this thread with your classic rock bullshit: either stay on topic or sit on your fucking fists. Thanks in advance.

I`m actually laughing really hard at the rage my simple post caused. Allow me to clarify. I enjoy classic rock as a genre better than other genre`s. I prefer music made by instruments as opposed to the techno crap that is completely synthesized. I posted random bands and artists I enjoy. All of these statements were independant of each other. Seriously, this thread`s purpose as I saw it was to talk about music in general, hence the title, not to shit on types of music people like. Glen, CaptKirby, I don`t know what I did to offend you so whatever it was, I apologize.
DM, if you don`t like classic rock that`s fine, but don`t bitch it out in a thread about music, thanks.

Back on topic, yes dloosh, there were several bands I could have further added, I just skipped over the more well known ones I saw.

I also really like a number of songs from soundtracks.

You Know My Name by Chris Cornell, is the theme song from Casino Royale and is an excellent mixing of guitar riffs and lyrics.

Pokemon Theme Song, yeah yeah, I know, lol. Listening to the full version however I discovered that it is actually a pretty solid work that is enjoyable to listen to.

The Phantom of the Opera Soundtrack - Canadian Cast, a brilliant combination of songs, the lyrical performances are brilliant, Colm Wilkinson in particular (Phantom), and its quite easy to imagine the scenes based off of the music.

Again if you don`t like a type of music just ignore it, its that simple.

I still don't understand why the fuck you're posting itt.
Is classic rock included in the topic of discussion? I really didn't think so.

Glen in the first line of the op said:
Let`s talk about music.[/QUOTE

I really don`t understand why anything I`ve posted is receiving so much flak. If I`m getting crucified by you people for posting on the goddamn topic than this is no better than Firebot.

Chilliwack produced the one hit wonder My Girl (Gone, gone, gone), it`s rather addicting for a while.

Bill Withers, sang Lean On Me, the full song is excellent.

Matchbox Twenty is a lesser known band that produces good albums from time to time, my personal favourite is Unwell.

At any rate I`m done with this thread. It`s clear that people are unwilling to have an open mind towards people`s thoughts on music. It is a shame.

assuming drone counts here i quite like Jesu. been meaning to give Boris another shot, since the band they're mostly inspired by (the Melvins) are pretty great.

and on the topic of Jesu, Godflesh comes to mind but they're basically just industrial so i'm guessing that doesn't belong in here idk

Swans often get associated with the term "noise" and the songs i've heard have ranged from fantastic to awful, so idk if that's fitting.

I pretty much consider them as alt-rock, but I figured it was worth noting that they can make some good noise rock.

@Glen, no need to explain. I get where you're coming from.

Liked that Big Black tune, but can't say I'm that into the genre as a whole... That said, do Sleigh Bells count as Noise??? Because love them, even though they seem more "pop"-y (and dance-y) than the artists you've posted.

potent, hammering beats to keep you going, and 3:40 will really test your capacity to embrace the abrasive.
I guess I'm just not as into music that "tests you".

As soon as you said engaging, repetitive beats I was thinking minimal tech, different sound but look no further for repetition etc:

Hot Natured - Forward Motion
Ricardo Vilalobos - MDMA
Pleasurekraft - Tarantula
Maya Jane Coles - Hummingbird

man this stuff is really good, first one especially!!! i'm a sucker for anything with a repetitive minimalist feel to it, early italo-disco and stuff like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KNfYGRT58zA especially

the problem with me making this thread is that it makes 'noise' seem like a genre when it really isn't. i don't think any of the bands i listed sound very similar to each other!!!!

Matchbox Twenty is a lesser known band
are you serious lol

Jason Crumer - Ottoman Black is my personal favourite harsh noise album, here is a droney / ambient track by him

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPtGSgKmMig

the rest of the album is pretty harsh but it's not just ear-rape for the sake of it

for punky noise rock, i like harry pussy and butthole surfers (heres another song), also skullflower are more electronic / harsh but they might be up your alley, i personally love them.

i guess zs for boredoms like stuff? new slaves is some bizarre jazzy noise shitfest album and it's pretty damn good

also i can confirm that the merzbox is unsurprisingly pretty bad though disc 26 is quite interesting and worth listening to.

edit: also i forgot coughs
