NU Discussion Thread (Mark II)

Well, Water absorb, high enough HP to have bulky subs, good physical defence, and a different set of weaknesses and resistances. This includes not dieing horribly to Skuntank (Who still walls it pretty well, mind you, but it can't do much in return other than blow up.), although it makes it less of a fighting type/magmortar counter.

Also, better movepool on the offensive. Boltbeam off of a good SpA, and Beam has STAB? DD and Curse if you want to go that way? Nice.

I've used Articuno before, in fact, back in 3-3, I used Scarf Articuno on the suspect ladder as a 100% Garchomp counter, or close enough to it. It had enough defense to not be OHKO'ed by Stone Edge, but also OHKO'ed Garchomp. YacheChomp was slower, and was 2HKO'ed, so Articuno won barring a Crit/Miss due to Sand Veil.

No Garchomp I actually faced beat my Scarf Articuno. 0_o

Anyway, back to the point at hand, Artiuno's offensive movepool is garbage, and with all the Fire types in NU, Ice is actualy quite a poor attacking type, especialy due to lack of Dragons and Flying types being used. Full Stall in NU is simply not viable, and Stealth Rock, which is often set mid-game, and thus, is hard to stop, rips off 50% of Articuno's HP.

Speaking of attacking types, I have an idea for the next NU Smog Article:

Attacks and you, in NU.

Basically, there are many differences in the viability of attacking types in NU. Psychic is way up there, due to lack of Steels, and, aside from Skuntank, common Dark types. Flying, which fails in OU, is possibly the BEST attacking type in NU, simply because nothing more common than Manertric resists it.

Could make a paragraph of it. Coupled with a few other 'Differences in the Metagame from OU' paragrpahs [Ie: Lack of Stall viability], could be interesting.

Exclusively using unorthodox sets and uncommon Pokémon...

1. Does not make you better than anyone else
2. Does not give you experience with the tier
3. Does not give you the authority to dictate what is and is not allowed in the tier
4. Does NOT make you better than anyone else

I wasn't saying that they did. However, that also doesn't give HIM the right to yell about how Espeon is broken... WHILE EXPLICITLY SAYING he doesn't want to pack what may be it's best counter (Because let's face it, if it HAS to run HP ground and leave itself open to multiple other things to beat 1 pokemon, then it's countered.) If I came off as elitist, well, I'm sorry.

I do play as much as I can though.

And Lapras should be seen a lot more. It's really good, has OU level stats, and takes hits like a champ. No reliable recovery sucks, but hey, Regice doesn't either and it's still used (It has more walling potential, I guess, but pure ice isn't good defensive typing.)

Is this directed towards Raikaria?

whatever happened to project nu making a ban list?

I think its pretty obvious it isn't in smogon's plans atm.

hell id rather have otu of control and loose banning than the crap that is going on right now.

BTW, if you REALLY have Espeon problems, just stick a Lapras on your team. It can take special hits like no tommorow (I'm sorry, but a neutral, full health Eruption from Scarflosion 2hkos a set with 248/0 special defensively.), and it is really only threatened by HP Fighting or something.

Yeah, you should look this stuff up before you post it...

A 252 sp attack timid lo espeon using psychic does 46.1% - 54.5% to a calm 252hp/252sp attack lapras. If you switch in with one layer or sr or spikes than you will be 2hko'd 100% of the time.

A 252 sp attack rash typhlosion does 73% - 86.4% with eruption against your 248 hp set. Thats very nearly a guarenteed 0hko with sr and not something to brag about.

Slowking offers resistances to Fighting, Fire and Psychic, three of the most common and potent attacking types in NU. Lapras simply doesn't.

Ice typing is a curse to Lapras.

I believe that the only reason it is NU is because of that.
I mean, Lapras can do almost everything with a huge movepool and stats.
Curse, DD, wall, special attacker... many nice things.

But that Ice typing...

Yeah, Ice typing is like a giant middle finger to a water type (a good defensive typing)
without that Ice typing I could see Lapras working in UU (possibly even UU)

And it's never worth on a bulky poke like that.
Bulky wall/sweepers like Lapras always need good typing for it to work.

Oh the irony: Walrein is a bad Lapras clone... who actually is blessed with the Ice typing that makes it "better" than Lapras (well, better only for Hail).
Derp.

Except that Leftovers would be "cancelled" due to no Ice typing on Hail conditions.
That means less turns to stall. That means Walrein wouldn't be as effective.

Tier changes, everyone!

Well, we got Drifblim, Qwilfish and Nidoqueen back.
But... well, Slowking is gone. Fire pokes likes the changes. Most players does not.

Fire is going to dominate this time (seeing that Regirock stayed in UU)...

PS: about alrein: it also has STAB Blizzard over Lapras (well, Lapras has too, but won't ever use it since Walrein is on every Hail themed team, making Lapras unusable on those teams because of shared weaknesses and all...).

We're going to see bulky Scarf Gabite to try and deal with Magmortar now...
Maybe CM Pain Split Ninetales in order to set up on Magmortar instead.
