Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Holy shit I absolutely hate people who say they have OCD with no factual medical support for that statement. Unless your doctor (or someone with a good knowledge of medicine) diagnosed you with OCD, you don't have it. You can't "be kind of OCD", you either have it or you don't. Let the dumbasses learn a new word to describe the weird things you do:
IDIOSYNCRASIES
id·i·o·syn·cra·sy /ˌɪdiəˈsɪŋkrəsi, -ˈsɪn-/ [id-ee-uh-sing-kruh-see]
1. a characteristic, habit, mannerism, or the like, that is peculiar to an individual.
2. the physical constitution peculiar to an individual.
3. a peculiarity of the physical or the mental constitution, especially susceptibility toward drugs, food, etc. Compare allergy(def. 1).

lol post of the day.

There was a show on Discovery or TLC or some channel that does all these shows (like hoarders) called "Compulsion" or something along those lines. Anyway, it was about people with OCD and how they overcame it. And I watched 3-4 of these episodes and we're talking about people with INSANE compulsions. Like, this one chick would literally PICK HER SKIN OFF HER FACE because she felt it was unclean... or the one guy who had to touch everything 150 times before he could be sure it wouldn't burst into flame... These people were completely socially retarded... then they brought in a psychiatrist...

and do you know what the psychiatrist's "cure" was?

He told them to just not do the compulsions. And lo and behold, after a couple of weeks of forcibly not giving into the compulsions, they were cured!!!!

This is such a non-disease it's astounding that people researching / studying it get huge grants in order to do so instead of that money going to researching REAL diseases.

The percent of subjects on those shows who revert back to their habits near 100%. OCD is a very real disorder. Yes it can be managed through sheer will (managed, not beaten) but it is hard. I'm at the point where I've eliminated all OCD'sh things beyond repeating phrases over and over in my head and checking the alarm clock repeatedly before I turn in.

Before anyone says anything about not being able to be part OCD, I talked with my psychiatrist who said something (that means correct me as you see fit) along the lines of: Some doctors consider all people to have a ranking on the Autism spectrum, with very high levels being autism, very low but noticeable levels tend to have symptoms of OCD, and very, very low levels being "normal". I'm not sure I buy this, though, but its something I found interesting.

Hey "OCD" users,

I bet you're all self-diagnosed, read the OCD symptoms online, and figure that "oh, well sometimes I walk down the stairs weird I guess I am obsessive compulsive and OMG I HAVE TO DO DUMB SHIT X THAT BUGS EVERYONE AHAHAHA OCD MAKES ME QUIRKY AND INTERESTING"

Most of you don't have anything that sounds like OCD even a little bit. Most of you are just uptight teenagers with sticks up your asses. "I NEED TO CORRECT GRAMMAR QWUOBFUOBIF" "I HATE EVEN NUMBERS" "I GET HEADACHES"

I have OCD but I don't medicate it, mostly because as a fair few of you know I like smoking weed, drinking, and acid, and I don't think I'd like to see antidepressants mixed with illegal drugs. However, just from reading your symptoms I know you don't have the disorder. If you've never washed your hands raw red because otherwise you'd be consumed with some great, crushing fear of oncoming death or dirtiness, or wasted half an hour going up and down stairs because you missed the last step, you don't severe enough compulsions to have any reasonable need for treatment.

It sounds like the OP got butthurt over some infraction and decided that pretending to have extremely mild OCD was a get-out-of-jail-free card, Gen called bullshit, and the OP here made this thread as a passive-aggressive little jab back because he doesn't want to take his lumps.

Taylor, sorry bro but not everything is about weed...

Actually technically you do self-medicate your OCD with marijuana.

If you guys know anything about Vader it's that his affinity towards weed has not stopped any compulsion he has. Or at least a great deal.

I'm compulsive when it comes to watching TV (ie If i'm watching one show in one channel, I need to have another channel I frequently check out mapped to the "last" button or I go crazy.) and a few other things I can't remember atm but thats about it.

Lul I hav OCD (I like to match things OMG), Aspergers (the genius kind, not the retard kind), and I get Depressed a lot when bad things happen to me.

Oh also I have Social Anxiety Disorder because I'm pretty sure that's a thing now.

All self diagnosed of course

Interesting fact: washing hands isn't the only symptom of OCD. If you knew anything about the disorder that you claim to have, you'd know that everyone has it different.

Complications of mine include checking to make sure the door in my house is locked up to twenty times before going to bed, likewise with checking my alarm, all the lights in the house, and any faucets to make sure they're either on or not on. Nothing is worse than living with extreme paranoia. I also do this when I'm leaving a hotel or for school. I check probably a dozen times to make sure I've gotten everything.

The symmetry thing that I have to deal with causes me to lose all sense of focus and concentration, thus hurting me in school. Likewise for the fact that my obsessive nature when it comes to mistakes in speech and in academic problems causing me to lose all focus and become utterly consumed with the desire to correct someone in some way.

And I think it's really funny that you said "I GET HEADACHES" as if it's some kind of joke symptom that doesn't matter. Have you ever had a fucking migraine? It puts professional athletes out for a week at a time. That's longer than even shit like a sprained ankle can do. I'm guessing that you just never have had a migraine, because when OCD symptoms cause someone to develop them, it's absolutely horrid. They will miss work, school, etc, and experience probably the worst week of their life. It's not some kind of joke.

And I have indeed been diagnosed by a psychiatrist. I don't use illegal drugs, so I'm using the anti-depressant I've been given, and it works quite well, but doesn't alleviate all symptoms, but it does take away some of the intense anxiety that leads to migraines and continued rituals. I still have the desire to do something, but it's not intense, and I'm not paranoid about shit.

And yes, this thread is indeed a bit of a passive-aggressive attack and a thread to stimulate discussion at the same time. My talks with Gen. Empoleon brought this subject to the forefront of my mind, and I thought it would be interesting to talk about it with the members of Smogon. I also can not STAND unjust infractions, so it bothers me. I can take a damn infraction on some silly internet forum, because I really don't give a fuck. But when something is unjust, no matter where it happens, I get pretty pissed off.

lol? You're right, it takes no knowledge or anything of the sort to become a psychiatrist. Twelve years, getting into med school, and testing to actually get certified is a joke.

Hi i'm kind of OCD here are a few of my really bizarre symptoms:

1) i have to breathe out after i breathe in otherwise i get really freaked out and breathe out anyways
2) at my old school there were tiles in the hallway and i always had to walk inside each tile (not on the cracks), if i didnt i would be terrified my mothers back would break
3) i have to include at least 3 things in every list otherwise it feels incomplete and i have to make up some last bullshit one
5) fsr i dislike the number 4

Man Im so ocd. Every time i step with my left foot i have to step with my right. Its so fucking weird.

dan dan do you ever scratch an itch? like say your nose just gets a little tickle and your hands are full and at that moment in time all you want to do is scratch it. ever tried holding out and seeing how long you can last? well guess what, its all in your head, the sensation is purely psychological. now you are free to never scratch yourself again. thank me later

I am OCD about people who say they are OCD about some minor thing when they really are just idiosyncratic.

way to fuck up a thread with a well-thought out op, i wonder why everyone thinks a forum is firebot 2.0

even though ocd is comparable to aspergers in terms of frequency and apparent ease of self-diagnosis, to act like it doesn't exist is probably retarded!

Yeah, I kind of have the same thing with the crack on the sidewalk thing. If I crack one knuckle I have to crack the other. I haven't been diagnosed, and I don't think I have OCD, I think it's just another idiosyncrasy, as zaccheaus mentioned.

Oh, and iDunno, I'm not saying OCD people are special, or whatever. I don't have it, but why don't you try living with OCD. I didn't think much of it before reading this thread, but now I know for a damn fact that its not easy.

I actually do have OCD. I just don't parade it and I take medication now so it doesn't bother me anymore! The only problem is that those pills make me pretty much almost sleepy to the point of being permanently incapacitated so I was prescribed a clinical trial of supplemental Narcolepsy medication to counteract it. I sometimes tell people I have narcolepsy because I find it funny when they look at me like I'm from Mars or something.

I probably never had OCD, but whatever nobody else here has it anyway.
