I have been trying to climb the ladder for some time, and to preferably do it with a theme team. Through Maniaclyrasist's tutoring, and assistence from several friends such as Blue Kirby, Bologo, and Wayff 13, I finally made a dominant core that catapulted me into the top 100 with just a couple hours of use. So, heres the team!
Look at that group... 3 OU, 2 UU, 1 BL / OU
Anyway... here we go:
Lead:
Quilfish @ Focus Sash
Ability: Swift Swim
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Attack / 252 Speed
*Waterfall
*Taunt
*Rain Dance
*Explosion
I'm getting known for this little guy. He needs more love. Anyway, the focus sash guarentees Rain Dance, giving him 538 speed making him faster than everything. I waterfall if I think I can KO (something like Gengar or Infernape), if not I just blow up. Simple, yet effective. No one wants to be down to 5 pokemon with the rain up... this tips the battle in my favor. If you think the 538 speed is overkill consider this: 269 speed without rain lets me Taunt a lot of slower things that try to set up (Gyarados, Breloom, Bronzong, etc.). Quilfish really doesn't need to survive anything anyway. Many people also make the mistake of bringing in their bulky water or celebi, fearing a powerful waterfall, and getting an Explosion... OUCH.
The Set Up:
Bronzong @ Damp Rock
Ability: Levitate
Nature: Impish
EVs: 252 HP / 156 Attack / 4 Speed / 96 Special Defense
*Hypnosis
*Stealth Rock
*Rain Dance
*Explosion
Simple Bronzong build found on a lotta rain dance teams. Comes in on things like Mamo and Garchomp, puts the switch to sleep, sets up 8 turns of hell for the other team, and booms. Simple and effective.
Mr. Versitility:
Celebi @ Life Orb
Ability: Natural Cure
Nature: Modest
EVs: 252 HP / 36 Speed / 220 Special Attack
*Leafstorm
*Psychic
*Recover
*Perish Song
Celebi is the jack of all trades on this team. I made this set when I heard about tinkerbell and customized him for my team. Hits 245 speed to get the jump on Tyranitar and its counters. Anyway, he absorbs status, phazes greedy stat uppers like Raikou and Lucario, hits dumb switch ins like Heracross and Infernape with Psychic, and Leafstorms everything else into oblivion. Recover off the life orb damage and get the hell outta there. Perish song also seals the victory against stubborn last man pokemon, as I can just recover until they die.
The Savior:
Garchomp @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Sand Veil
Nature: Adamant
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Attack / 252 Speed
*Outrage
*Dragon Claw
*Earthquake
*Surf
Garchomp really saves rain dance teams when the rain dies because he allows me to finish off that threatening pokemon so that I can get the rain back up later. I also like the fact that he can operate in Sandstorm, which is something not many rain dance pokemon can do, which separates this team from a standard rain team. I went with Surf after reading Jbates warstory, and Dragon Claw because I do NOT want to be locked into outrage early in the match.
Mid Game Sweeper:
Kabutops @ Life Orb
Ability: Swift Swim
Nature: Jolly
EVs: 20 HP / 252 Attack / 236 Speed
*Waterfall
*Stone-Edge
*X-Scissor
*Swords Dance
Standard Kabutops sweeping set. However, Maniaclyrasist suggested to outfit my team to survive in sandstorm, and suggested this EV spread. He gets 560 speed in the rain, which is overkill, but 280 speed without rain certainly is not. This allows me to outspeed everything up to and including lucario without rain, which can be a real bitch if he gets his swords dance in. Sandstorm doesn't hamper his ability too much, as those pokemon are mostly slow, and it gives me a special defense boost to set up. I use him earlier in the match, because water physical I think is one of the best attack types because nothing walls it. Hippowdon and Gliscor don't want to eat Waterfalls now do they?
The Superstar Late-game Gloryhound:
Kingdra @ Life Orb
Ability: Swift Swim
Nature: Mild
EVs: 120 Attack / 136 Speed / 252 Special Attack
*Surf
*Draco Meteor
*Waterfall
*Rain Dance
My staple Kingdra set, with more speed EVs and less physical attack power. Blissey is easily taken care of by the rest of my team, but Waterfall 2HKOs her anyway still, if I predict her switch in. Draco Meteor hits annoying shit like Breloom, Roserade, Starmie, and other weak water / grass types that resist surf for a OHKO. It also OHKOs Gyarados with Stealth Rock. Again, he has an enormous 480 speed in the rain, but the selling point is the magical 240 to beat breloom without rain. I could bump 5 more points of speed into him to beat all versions of Tar and his counters to the punch, but then I lose the ability to 2HKO Blissey. Surf smashes through everything else.
Well thats the team! It has done very well so far, plowing through many good battlers and leaving them in the dust. My only losses have been to silly hax or yanmega late game sweeps (if he's not leading, I have a huge problem with him). I wish I had a way to fix that.... Any suggestions?
EDIT: I have neglected to make a threat list simply because a rain dance offense strategy doesn't really accurate "counter" many of the offensive threats in the game. I guess you can call it "a best defense is a good offense strategy" as most offensive pokemon are just outsped and OHKOed anyway because they are frail and rely on speed and attack power.
Rate away Smogon!!!!
