Prelude-
I didn’t get to compete in the RI regionals in November because I didn’t have any way of getting there so I was intent on competing at the Philadelphia regional even though it’s so far from New York. In the months before regionals I really didn’t start playtesting until after I took my SATs in March. After a few weeks of testing I decided on a team and I used it in the international challenge and managed to finish 130th after only doing 69 battles that weekend. The team I used was the following: Latios, Terrakion, Thundurus, Tornadus, Scizor, and Chandelure. I played with it for a bit more on PO but like a week before regionals I started to lose so much and I got really scared. I made a few changes and I finally had a team that did well against just about everyone on PO barring hax or misplays. There was one exception to this and it was the number one player on the SkarmBliss server, Ben7000. Every time I played him it seemed like I just couldn’t pull out a win. I disregarded this though thinking, what are the chances I’ll face him until the last few rounds anyways? I got all of my mons by the Thursday before regionals and I played on the battle subway to get all of my items the last two days before regionals. I spent the night before the tournament at my friend’s house and we taught his cousin the basics of the game so he could come and give it a shot in the senior division. After finishing my friend’s cousin’s team at about midnight I tried to get some sleep.
The Day of the Event-
My buddy Rukario calls at 5 saying his dad is going to come pick us up in about 40 minutes. I woke up my friend and his cousin and told them we had to get ready. We got ready and we rushed out of the door without having any breakfast, which probably wasn’t the best idea. We took the train to Port Authority and took a coach bus to Philadelphia at like 7. We arrive there at around 9:30 and my friend’s cousin gets in line for seniors. I spot TDS, ISS, and Cybertron from across the room and run over there to say hello. There were a bunch of other smogoners with them and I felt a little awkward because I didn’t know more than half of them (random status lol). Rukario and I also see SuperPokemon67 in line and we chat it up with him for a bit before deciding to have a multi-battle against him and his sister. That match was filled with so much hax, it was crazy, our side got frozen like 4 times it was ridiculous! We had to end the match early because SP67 and his sister had to go inside for seniors. Rukario and I hop in the already forming Master’s line with our friend Paul. While waiting in line a girl notices the Oshawott plush in my back pocket and randomly hugs me! I mean I know I’m adorable but that doesn’t mean you have to hug me out of nowhere, but hey I guess the ladies can’t get enough of me ;D LOL
We just wait around for a really long time and then we finally get registered and I get my shelmet card. They announce that master’s won’t be starting until 2 which kind of irked me because I thought I was going to be home by like 8 but at the rate they were going it didn’t seem so. Rayad and I try to find a spot where we can take a little nap before masters. After 5 min we realized we’re not getting any sleep so we went to the Terminal market place and got some food. I bought a cheesesteak but I didn’t feel like eating it so I had some ice cream just to wake me up a bit. We go back to the convention center and I check up on my seniors. Hitmonrocker was doing pretty well, as well as cybertron and pungentfruit. I was rooting for SP67’s sister because she was doing so well for her first event, as well as LudiImpact. I took lot’s of pictures of the seniors battling so I’ll upload them somehow so you guys can check them out. Both Vince and Isabel barely miss top 8 but I’m still proud of them and I know they’ll do well in Nats. My boy Aaron finishes 3rd and I’m really happy for him and Pungentfruit (who comes in 2nd) because I know they deserve it with their intense battling. They announce that master’s is going to be done in two flights since there are so many players and there will have to be 10 rounds of swiss. My mind is blown at this point because I know this going to take forever. Rayad and I decide that we’re going to drop out if we know we can’t make top 4 because we need to get home since we have school in the morning. We look at the rosters and we see that all three of us are in the green-yellow flight. We scanned through the rest of the list and we only recognize one name, biffster’s. We walk off to the side and we both realized if we played our best we just might make top 4 and get our trips. We really wanted to make top 4 because without it we wouldn’t be making it to Nats. I mentally prepare myself until they post pairings for round one.

Some may argue that it’s kind of noobish to confuse your opponent but luck is such a huge factor of this game so I kind of wanted to push it more towards my favor. I didn’t use the move too much in the tourney though.

Round One vs Ryan C.
So I go to my table and wait for my opponent to come. I wasn’t nervous at all until this point. I tried to keep my composure though. When he finally came we talked a bit and he said this was his first tournament and that he didn’t play much online.

I don’t remember the guys he didn’t use but I remembered thinking, wait this looks like a pretty competitive team. I think we sent out mirror leads. I don’t remember too much about this match other than completely outplaying him. I switched out a lot and it paid off. At the end of the match he had a Chandelure against all 4 of my guys. He used protect and it was scarfed. He forfeited the match from there.

Round Two vs David W.
I was pretty happy I won my first match, it helped calm my nerves a lot. This next guy was really friendly and also told me it was his first event as well.
Eelectross/Flygon/Magmortar/Heracross/?/?
I wasn’t sure what was going on with his team so I just played as if it was any other battle. I manage to 3-0 and only lost my Tornadus from burn damage (which I got from flame body)

Round Three vs Jonathon K.
He also said this was his first tournament but he said he lurked on smogon. I knew this was going to be my first serious match so I made sure to keep calm and try to do my best in predicting what he’s going to do.
Azumarill/Chandelure/Ferrothorn/Scrafty/?/?
I predict really well this game and manage to shut him down pretty fast. He manages to KO a couple of my guys though.

Round Four vs Sheryl R.
I was pretty happy that I was doing so well up to this point but I knew I had to stay serious if I wanted to make top 4. She was from that intercollegiate Pokemon League group so I had a feeling she was good. She also told me she played on SkarmBliss.
Garchomp/Zapdos/Cresselia/Terrakiom/?/?
I do a lot of predicting this match and I bring down to 3 of my guys against her cresselia. I paralyze it to push her even further into a corner. It was a good match and she was really nice about it.

Round Five vs Robbie M. “Biffster”
I knew it was going to happen eventually and this match was the one I was most afraid of. Going up against a duck is certainly intimidating no matter how good you are at the game. We had a few battles sitting next to each other already since we had been battling at the top tables. I knew this was going to be a tough battle.

It really could have gone either way but I managed to make some crucial predictions and pull out the win. Biff was such a nice guy though and I’m glad I got to meet him. I wished him good luck for the upcoming rounds.

Round Six vs Mark C. “Civ”
Wow I just beat biffster the only smogoner I recognized from my flight. I felt good that I was 5-0 but I knew I still had a ways to go if I wanted that trip. My next opponent said he was also on smogon but he didn’t post too often. He seemed really nice and the group he came with was doing really well, all of them were sitting with in the top 4 tables. I kept calm and hoped for the best.
Terrakion/Zapdos/Scizor/Latios/Hitmontop/Cresselia
I narrowly win this one but my predictions pull through once again. The end of the match had my 90% Chandelure and 95% Metagross vs his full health Latios. He Draco Meteors my Chandelure for the KO and gets the Sp.Atk drop. My meteor mash misses that turn and I’m thinking darn. He t-bolts the next turn and paralyzes my Metagross and I hit my meteor mash. The next turn I get fully paralyzed and he t-bolts again dropping my health low. I manage to hit my bullet punch the next turn but all of that hax towards the end was scary.
1-0 Win/ 6-0
Round 7 vs David K. “Sanchezasaurus”
They announced that this was going to be the last round of swiss and that they will be doing top cut for top 4 instead of continuing swiss. I had a pretty good resistance because my opponents were doing pretty great. I wanted the win though so I could get a good seed for top cut. David was a really nice guy and I’m glad I met him.
Hitmontop/Cresselia/Marowak/Ludicolo/Scizor/Tyranitar
He leads top cress while I send out Tornados and Metagross I think. He switches out to his marowak and I get a crit on it with my Zen Headbutt which might have mattered. I don’t remember much about this match other than it finishing with my Cress and Tornados against his Ludicolo. I remember overkilling it with a Helping Hand and Flying Gem boosted Acrobatics at the end.
2-0 Win/7-0
Wow I managed to finish top seed in my flight. I felt really good knowing that I was so close to winning my trip to Nats, just one more win away. I felt bad for David though because his resistance wasn’t high enough to get him into the top 4 for our flight. Rayad and Paul were pretty happy that I did so well.
Top Cut-
We waited for a while for the other flight to finish their battles. They finally finished and we got the names for the other 4 players that will be in top cut.

I couldn’t believe it, the one person I could never seem to beat on P.O. was the only one in my way from competing in Nats. My heart sank at this point. I tried to keep it together though so I could put up a good fight.

Excadrill/Tyranitar/Scizor/Garchomp/Zapdos/Cresselia
He leads just as he always does on PO, T-tar and Excadrill while I lead Cresselia and Metagross.
I play really poorly in this match and I get 3-0ed. Ben was extremely nice though and if I had a chance to choose who I would lose the trip to I wouldn't pick anyone else. Maybe if I brought my scarf T-tar and tried setting up tailwind from the start the match could have ended differently but oh well.
0-3 Loss/ 7-1
I was disappointed that I went 7-0 in swiss only to lose it all in the top cut but I had a good time seeing everyone there. After I lost we spent about 6 hours to get home thanks to delays and construction. I got home at about 2:30.

I had a good time though and I really like how much these events have changed since 2008. I wish the tournament ran a little bit smoother though because all the delays really made my trip to Phily kind of lousy. I also didn’t like the idea of top cut too much considering it kind of made my 7-0 in swiss go down the drain but it’s okay I guess, there’s always next year. I did pretty well considering my 7-1 win/loss means I technically got like 5th and I hope I can continue to improve in upcoming VGC tournaments if I continue to compete in them. Thanks for reading!

-Performing the best I ever had at a regional Tournament despite not practicing as much I had in the past and being sleep deprived
-All of my opponents being really nice
Slops:
-Not making it to Nats
-Having to face so many smogoners towards the end
-Tournament being delayed so much
-Getting home at 2 in the morning
I had a good time though and I really like how much these events have changed since 2008. I wish the tournament ran a little bit smoother though because all the delays really made my trip to Phily kind of lousy. I also didn’t like the idea of top cut too much considering it kind of made my 7-0 in swiss go down the drain but it’s okay I guess, there’s always next year. I did pretty well considering my 7-1 win/loss means I technically got like 5th and I hope I can continue to improve in upcoming VGC tournaments if I continue to compete in them. Thanks for reading!
