Sticky Orange Islands SQSA Thread

interestingly, when I was using another 3 DS to facilitate trades, it couldn't read my Platinum's cart. And replaying Soul Silver I can pinpoint my frustrations more accurately: everything slows the game down. Screen goes black for 1-2 seconds when navigating menu, and there is 2-3 second pause when xp bar goes up, when adding phone numbers, selecting options in battle, it's very noticeable compared to my other DS games. At the same time, from an objective perspective, it looks like my copy of Platinum may be the problematic one. Although, when transferring Pokemon over, traded Pokemon from Platinum have worked perfectly.

What are you asking?

I'm posting in case anyone has anyone had similar experience and could tell me, based on their personal experience, what it says about the legitimacy of my gen 4 games. I didn't have high hopes so I didn't specifically clarify in the post, it was following through with an earlier query. If necessary I can def edit/delete!!

re: your DS not reading carts, I've found this happens increasingly as my DS & 3DS age. Sometimes it takes several insertions/reinsertions of a cart for it to be read.

re: Soulsilver, without seeing footage I can't say for certain, but I've always found all of the Gen IV games incredibly slow - the black screen between menu sounds pretty standard to me, as does the xp bar pause. Gen IV is animated more slowly than Gen V so it can often be quite jarring going from one to the other, but your experience doesn't sound hugely out of the ordinary to me. But DS carts are aging and frankly both 3DS and DS games don't seem to have been made as well as GBA carts - I've read reports of ORAS save data deleting itself in recent years - so possibly they are getting slightly slower than they once were.

I obviously can't verify the legitimacy of your cart for certain, but I would think it probably is. Even if it isn't, fake carts generally play extremely similarly to real ones in most regards. Fun fact, I actually have a fake Pokemon Sapphire cartridge - it plays absolutely identically to a genuine game, the only differences are 1.) it can't connect with Gen IV games or any of the Gamecube titles, but this is largely irrelevant since it can trade with legitimate gen III carts 2.) it once deleted the save data after trading with a real cart.

Actually, there's one other tiny, tiny difference - one of the water tiles to the east of the harbour building in Slateport City is glitched and appears to be a tree tile instead. No idea why that's the case.

But yeah - DS save data is stored in a different way to GBA carts iirc so I'm not sure whether save data on fake carts is any less stable than real ones. Possibly.

Most bootleg gen 3 carts don't save data in the proper manner of the real ones (this is why it can't connect to the GameCube or DS games, the save isn't where it's supposed to be) and the rom is patched to accommodate this. This sometimes breaks things if it wasn't done properly.

Abilities that work in battle (mostly asking about arena trap, magnet pull, and shadow tag) don't work in safari zones, right? Even if the ability user is the first Pokemon in your party?

No no, it is legit exciting to have access to two DSes (or two GBAs or GBCs or whatever else), makes things so much easier.

Other stuff that comes to mind:
  • There's a small amount of version-exclusive items to be aware of, if you care (Gen V has a few weird annoying ones like the Genesect Drives being game-exclusive)
  • Version-exclusive moves (tutor moves mainly, in some cases there's egg moves that are much harder to get without having different versions)
  • Don't forget to obtain all the old events from the Gen IV and V games (this takes some setup but it's not too difficult)
  • if aesthetics is something you care about, the Apricorn balls and the Sport Ball are exclusive to HGSS pre-Gen VII and it can be neat to have certain Pokemon caught in them. Unfortunately they can't be passed down by breeding so they're incompatible with egg moves and it makes obtaining ones with decent natures/IVs harder. Since the Dream World shut down you mostly can't get Pokemon in Dream Balls in Gen V any more unless they're from Dream Radar (but that's also unavailable now, so unless you downloaded it pre-shutdown you're out of luck); you can also obtain Ho-oh, Lugia, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Thundurus, Tornadus, and Landorus as low as level 5 with their Hidden Abilities this way
thank you so much for this comment, as I finally went and downloaded the events based on your recommendation.

I'm currently working on completing the dex in my copy of White 2. I was wondering if there was any sort of comprehensive list on moves for specific Pokemon worth transferring from Gen 4 to Gen 5. IE, Sucker Punch is a Move Tutor move in Gen 4. Another example would be how Clefable can get Soft Boiled in Gen 3. I don't have a way to transfer from Gens 3 to 4 tho. I can obviously look on Serebii but it can take awhile to look through for every single Pokemon.

Also, using the DNS hack, I have a tool for getting version exclusives on the GTS. This is a big help with a few guys like Purugly I would otherwise not be able to attain, but for Gens 1 and 3 starters, and the version exclusive legendaries (so Tornadus, Landorus, Kyogre, and Rayuaza) this will be more challenging as I don't have Pokedex entries for any of them besides Tornadus and Landorus, and for the latter those can be harder to find for a price I'm capable of paying.

Obv I can get the starters by playing through Soul Silver and beating Red, but I like this save file and would prefer not to speedrun it while I still have the 2nd DS within the next week, to get the last pair of starters. I was wondering if there’s any tricks for registering Pokemon in your dex or if I can use the fanmade server to make trades with a specific person so I can make a friend on Discord and do the trades.

btw I'm tired if its unclear these are meant to be openended questions, I was just thanking Quintin for his help earlier.

I feel pretty sure this is the case, but if you catch a Pokémon in a game and transfer it to another game to evolve it and transfer back, does it still count as being from the original game for the Home Pokedex?

ie, if I catch a Gligar in Scarlet and transfer it to Legends Arceus to evolve it into a Gliscor, will that count as a Scarlet Gliscor for dex completion?

All that it cares about is the mark, so yeah that will count for SV Dex

Anyone remember how exactly to get the maximum number of fans in Emerald's Trainer Fan Club in Lilicove City?

Like was this a case of getting a certain number of link battle victories, a certain number of elite 4 victories, or something else?

IIRC it is link battle victories, I used to have a lot of fans for other IRL trainers when my win/loss ratio was more even but after skewing the ratio heavily in favour of wins they all became mine (I would imagine it works the same way across games)

In Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen Versions, is there a known optimal or near optimal team with which to defeat the Indigo Pokémon League 200 times?

While Mewtwo would be helpful, at the same time you probably should have a party of other strong Pokemon with varied coverage to, more than anyhing, 1HKO the League's Pokemon. Without knowing what Pokemon you have or what TMs you have available all I can do is go over the League's Rematch teams you'll be facing each time:

Lorelei: Her rematch team is Dewgong, Cloyster, Piloswine, Jynx, and Lapras.
  • An Electric-type would be real helpful dealing with Dewgong, Cloyster, & Lapras. (If you decide to use Zapdos be careful as it's weak to Ice)
  • A Fighting-type could work too against Dewgong, Piloswine, & Lapras. (Note Lapras knows Psychic)
  • Finally a Fire-type can also deal with the Piloswine & Jynx. (Piloswine has Earthquake)
  • If you end up having them, Water-type deals with Piloswine and Ghost-type deals with Jynx.

Bruno: Steelix 1, Steelix 2, Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan
  • Special Fire-types can handle the Steelix, notably Moltres & Charizard will be immune to their Earthquakes (watch out for Rock Throw on the one he sends out first).
  • Fighting-type can also be good against Steelix but just be aware it has a LOT of Defense.
  • Psychic-type eats Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, and Machamp (you could maybe use a Flying-type but all of them have a Rock-type Move).
  • If you end up having them, Water-type would probably be the best choice against Steelix.

Agatha: Gengar 1, Gengar 2, Crobat, Misdreavus, Arbok
  • A fast Psychic-type (aka Mewtwo) would be prime here as it can most likely take out the Gengars & Crobat (and Arbok) before they can act.
  • An Electric-type is also good for Crobat.
  • Misdreavus should go easily down to a strong enough Physical attack, or a couple of strong Special attacks.
  • Ice-type can be handy for Crobat but you have plenty of options for it already.
  • If you end up having them, Ghost-type obviously would deal with the Gengars and Misdreavus (they I'd suggest a Ghost Move instead of a Ghost Pokemon; aka Mewtwo with Shadow Ball).

Lance: Gyarados, Kingdra, Aerodactyl, Two Dragonites
  • Electric-type easily handles Gyarados and deal with Aerodactyl (just be careful as Aerodactyl is fast and both of them have Earthquake).
  • Kingdra is tricky as it's only weak to Dragon and decent equal defensive stats. It knows Hyper Beam, Dragon Dance, Surf, and Ice Beam, so best I can suggest is a bulky Pokemon not weak to any of those Moves. (Reminder, move Category goes off Type this Gen, so after a Dragon Dance that Hyper Beam is going to hit harder in addition to it just being faster).
  • If there's any reason to have an Ice-type on your team it would be for the Dragonites. (If you use Articuno watch out as the Lv66 knows Flamethrower and the Lv72 knows Thunderbolt; Infact instead if an Ice Pokemon you may want to consider a bulky Water that knows Blizzard or Ice Beam).
  • If you end up having them, Water-type can also be used against Aerodactyl (and learn Ice-type Moves as I said). And if you can get a Dragon-type Move or have the patience to train up a Dragonite or can get your hands on a Kingdra, they wouldn't be bad to have either if not just the raw power but to deal with Lance's Dragon-types.

Blue: Heracross, Alakazam, Tyranitar, (Exeguttor/Venusaur), (Arcanine/Charizard), (Gyarados/Blastoise)
  • Fire-type should be good enough for Heracross, Exeggutor/Venusaur (note Venusaur knows Earthquake). If you end up having a Flying-type it'll also be good against them too (Heracross has Rock Throw).
  • A strong Physical Move can take down Alakazam, but if you have a Ghost-type move even better (this also goes for Exeggutor).
  • Tyranitar is a tank that is quad weak to Fighting-type but it knows Aerial Ace. If you have a Water-type will be good here but it also knows Thunderbolt.
  • Speaking of Water-types, you know what you may as well have one as it'll be good against Arcanine. As well as Ground or Rock, but I'm trying to keep this as streamlined as possible.
  • Finally Electric-type for Gyarados, Blastoise & Charizard.
  • The Psychic-type and Ice-type would also handle Venusaur.

So, yeah, so at you can see the most helpful Types (at least in my opinion) would be Electric, Fighting, Fire, Psychic, and Water; meanwhile would be very helpful to have a Ghost and Ice move.

What are the exact rules for posting on threads that haven't been posted on for a while? The expanded tier list thread hasn't had a post for 5 months but it's still on the front page of the IGTL subforum, am I allowed to post in it?

Global Rules uses the term "very long time". I believe several threads in this forum have received posts after > 6 months without issue.

In Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire Versions, if one bypasses May / Brendan at Lilycove City, is there a point at which she / he disappears?

They will remain in place until challenged and apparently change their dialogue if battled post-Elite Four.

No clue if the same thing happens in Emerald.

There's actually a similar curiosity with their appearance in Lavaridge Town; IIRC in RS if you white out due to poison damage inside the gym after beating Flannery, the rival will be hanging around in the middle of town and you can avoid talking to them, but in Emerald I believe they'll automatically approach you once you take a step. Though it might still be possible to skip them if the last Pokemon Centre was in a different location (unless the game automatically sets it to Lavaridge? Idk. Might give that a try sometime).

Since that's specifically May's dialogue, I wonder if Brendan says something different when you delay the Lilycove battle. So much to investigate!
while checking poke-corpus for this, there's three sets of dialog
The one above is when you first get there and if you do it in the post game, but if you do it between those two things, a slight variant
[PLAYER], what are you going to do?
Are you taking the POKéMON LEAGUE
challenge?
Or, are you going to complete your
POKéDEX?
I might've lost to you in battling,
but I'll finish my POKéDEX before you!
See you!

Here's Brendan's variants
[PLAYER], what are you going to do?
Since you're that strong, are you
taking the POKéMON LEAGUE challenge?
Heh, even me - if I trained my POKéMON
a bit more, I should be stronger than
you, [PLAYER].
Well, anyway, hang in there!
[PLAYER], what are you going to do?
Since you're that strong, are you
taking the BATTLE TOWER challenge?
Heh, even me - if I trained my POKéMON
a bit more, I should be stronger than
you, [PLAYER].
Maybe I will go to the BATTLE TOWER.
Well, anyway, hang in there!

Yeah just imagine, brendan, if you did train. Just. A little bit more. What a world that would be, mm?

Emerald is mostly the same they just swap Tower for Frontier. Brendan gets an extra line out of it though.
May:
[PLAYER], what are you going to do?
Are you taking the BATTLE FRONTIER
challenge?
Or, are you going to complete your
POKéDEX?
I might've lost to you in battling,
