Does anyone happen to know the internal/code names for the DLC Gen 9 Pokemon? Like how the Nacli line is "GANEN1/2/3"

I can take a pretty good guess at what they'd be just based on what they are (ie: SuicuneA, Duraludon2, probably Turtle or Tera or Disk for Terapagos), but I'm curious anyway.

For the Home challenges that require Regional Origin Dex (i.e. the Meloetta), do the DLC locations count separately for Pokemon that appear in both, or just the game?

EX: I didn’t import an Applin since I just mass deposited my boxes for a start. Does the Applin have to come from Paldea or just from SV (i.e. I can’t catch a second Applin while getting one to evolve to Dipplin)? Same for importing the Final Stage Starters caught in the Terrarium vs the Unrivaled Raid Catches

It is entirely based on the Origin of the Pokemon

If you had Go Tynamo in Home, it will only ever count for the Go Pokedex. It must be a Paldean Tynamo to count for the Paldea Dexes.

Note that the game doesn't differentiate between Kitakami, the Terrarium or mainland Paldea so a single Paldean Tynamo will count for all three of the SV Dexes.

e: And Magearna doesn't care about this for the national dex had every Pokemon touch Home.

Can Gigantamax Pokemon be transferred to Home from Go now? Was just transferring a couple of species and noticed one of my Toxtricity was able to be selected, instead of being greyed out like one would expect. It's definitely a Gmax one (I don't have any Toxtricity that aren't) and the transfer initiated as expected - the only reason it didn't complete was that I'd already sent something beforehand. Intentionally so as I don't actually want to transfer any of them.

No, if you try to transfer it will just Error.

I think this is how it worked before the Toxtricity event rather than graying it out, too. This is a classic Niantic Blunder

I’m doing my first play through of Soul Silver rn!! It’s on cart, and it seems noticeably slower than I remember Platinum being. That may be because I just finished White 2, which had an improved engine. I should probably just play Platinum to see if there’s a difference.

I fixed the time on my 3DS (from 2011 to 2024 with the correct month and date) in order to do a bug challenge on the proper day. The next morning, Soul Silver crashed and I had to restart the game. That’s the first time that had happened to me on Cart.

On a lighter note, I was wondering if anyone had advice for narrowing the squad down. I’m caught between playing through with Mons I wanted to use in Crystal: Heracross, Ampharos, a new and improved post PSS Sneasle, and the eevee I forgot about in Goldenrod until postgame, alongside my all stars from my Crystal run: Scizor, Typhlosion, Quagsire, and Sudowoodo. And if T-tar is obtainable early enough…

But that brings my total well above the 6 necessary and I’d like advice bringing it down. I assume I can win with wtv team I want, but was wondering which mons were the most fun to use. IE this is purely vibes based. I don’t wanna train too many due to limited exp.

I just grabbed the Eevee, so the only members I’d be missing would be the Sneasle. My Scizor has Swarm, not Technician which is certainly annoying and I can’t catch another one before Thursday without messing my clock up lol. I’m not sure if it would be worth it to wait to start training. Hmmm.

Can legendaries respawn after they were KO'd in Diamond and Pearl? I KO'd/ran away from Uxie and Azelf a while back to quickly get their dex entries under the assumption that they would respawn like in modern games, but redefeating the Elite Four and waiting over a day has not made them respawn.

To my knowledge, this was introduced in Platinum, so wouldn't be the case in Diamond and Pearl

Depends on if you KO'd them or ran. In DP they will respawn if you ran, but not if they fainted. You don't even need to beat the E4 just reenter the cave.

Is it just me or is Platinum significantly faster than HGSS. I just started playing Plat after finishing Soul Silver, and it genuinely feels like I’m playing on Speedup on cart. Maybe crazy or I’ve just adjusted to Soul Silver’s pace, but the sentiment of the internet is that HGSS is the same speed or faster than Platinum.

I’m playing through Platinum rn, I just beat the fifth gym. I’m loving the game sm this time, but having my usual problem with too many mons that I wanna play with. Here’s a rough list of my choices, ranked by my desire. Feel free to give recs:

1. Staraptor: def the team MVP so far and he doesn’t even have close combat yet. The guy absolutely rules and has saved me in multiple fights, as long as he’s neutral he can get the KO i need him to

2. Chompita the Gabbite: I love Garchomp, but sometimes Chompita with her Modest nature makes me want to release her on a route made of Ice. Once she gets some more levels and evolves, I know she’ll be fine, but she struggles under even neutral matchups sometimes. I still love her tho

3. Splendor the Houndoom. Based on his nature and IVs, he has roughly equal Attack/Special Attack. Given his Gen 4 learnset it’s not necessarily a bad thing lol. He’s the newest edition and lacks the bulks in game mons eventually get, although he may very well be a glass cannon either way. Aside form his bulk he’s been great. I gave him Fire Blast, which he has made good use of so far.

4. Rotom (Naked): lowkey may be my favorite of all the mons. He’s fast and a good special attack. I’m saving up rn for Thunderbolt, but he’s doing great with his learnset STABs. I am concerned he will get outpaced as the power increases due to his lower BST, but between EVs and my love for him I think he will be okay (plus 3 immunities)

5. Tortwell the middle evolution of Torterra: honestly grass types aren’t the best here due to the flying types. Kinda made me decide I think Grass is a straight up bad type. He’s at an awkward place rn with no good STABS, and is currently on the shit list due to being useless in the Crasher Wake fight

6. Mary the Azumarill: I just started using her bc I got Surf… I’ve always wanted to use Azumarill and I’m excited to see how strong she is with Huge Power. I’m a little concerned about moveset here, as I should probably give her strength, and later Waterfall. That’s fine but slightly limiting. I kinda wanna give her Return but that’s a little redundant with Strength ofc and will probably be weaker for awhile. I started using it in competitive and it’s funny that in the games it’s weird, because every time she faints she could lose happiness and the attack gets weaker

7. Vacuumwell the Bronzong: I never liked the design of Bronzong and usually don’t use defensive mons in a play through of earlier generations, but Cuum has held their own so far. I actually really like their vibes even if I usually don’t use defensive moves in a fight. Currently on the shit list due to getting KO-ed by a Golbat. Idiot!!

there’s also the mons I’m curious or wanna play as. I’m especially interested in an ice-type:
1. Sneasel
2. Froslass
3. Abamosnow
4. Mr. Mime
5. Electivire
6. Porygon (no evolution obtainable)
7. Riolu egg
8. Old favorites (Gastrodon, Scyther, Quagsire)

I swear there’s one more, but I can’t remember. I really wanna add an Ice type tho because I love Ice Types. My favorite is Sneasel and maybe there will be a way to evolve him in game this time without having to grind in the Battle Facilities.

I also do love Froslass tho.

I’m also curious about Porygon and Gligar. Without a way to evolve the former tho, and having already used the Earthquake tm on Garchomp, I feel unsure. I also love Gastrodon/Scyther/Quagsire, and have always wanted to play with those 1-stage Kanto mons: Jynx/Electabuzz/Mr. Mime, and I think the last two at least are available somewhere. Maybe replacing Bronzong with Mr. Mime or something. Anyways I’d love advice:P
Then there’s the Riolo egg and abamasnow… decisions!!

There are 2 Razor Claws available without using BP and before the League. One is in the Galactic Building in Veilstone, the other is in Victory Road.

What are you using to play? Cause that affects things.

You mentioned earlier that this was the first time you played Soul Silver and that it crashed so honestly I think you might have gotten a bad cart. Since it's not very common for it.

I do think that the overworld movement does kind of seem slower, but that's mostly because you kind of glide with long strides, personally.

The overworld did feel slower, but that may have been because I had running shoes permanently toggled on. Or maybe with the Pokemon following lol. But everything was slow: towards the end I was playing around with rare candies, deciding how to distribute them.

I’d reset the game and try another way. I couldn’t do it for long because it took ages to distribute the 14 rare candies I had. Like a minute and a half!! There would be a pause each time I pressed something on the menu, and this is with text speed on fast ofc.

The crash was right after a time manipulation. Took it to 11:59 to progress to the next day. I closed the 3ds and when I came back it was frozen and I had to close the program.

I assumed it was legit because it came from a used game store, and I assumed they were trustworthy and checked. Most of the time I bought from them or reliable ebayers. Eithwr way I appreciate the feedback

I made my way to the Elite 4… i was more underleveled than I thought, and was unable to overcompensate, and had to do some grinding, I don’t mind, but I do feel like it must be some sort of personal failing regarding my ability (that I can’t beat them underleveled). I’ll probably be at 53-60 when I beat Cynthia. Although that said, she’s not that bad or anything lol. Lance was worse for me.

I’ll put grades for them in Spoilers, I’m mainly writing this out so I can talk about it and ask about a good Bronzong moveset (more in the Spoiler) or if anyone has any observations/advice. I am having a lot of fun, but I also like hearing other’s perspectives.

Azumarill:
Grade: A
It might be psychological, but I have a deep trust of water types and Azu is no exception. She’s bulky enough to take a few hits, and can take on every member of the Ground E4 member without breaking a sweat. Handa down I love her sm. She’s def one of my favorites from the run, I love how fast she levels up, and how with Huge Power, how strong she is.

I will say, it’s a good example of the weird Gen 4 vibes: Azumarill is capable of being better post Split, but doesn’t get to take advantage of it as much as she could until late in the game.

Staraptor:
Grade: B
My Staraptor has suboptimal nature, and due to leveling up other party members fell behind on the curve. For some reason I missed Close Combat initially and had to relearn it.

Intimidate still absolutely rules and compensates for this. Even when she’s underleveled she can still contribute to fights. Being in a non-slow xp class means leveling up isn’t too bad. There’s a lot of ice/rock coverage out there, but I’ll fully assess that when she’s more leveled up.

Rotom (naked)
Grade: C
having looked up Rotom’s BST, I always knew this was going to happen, but at the end Rotom fell off the tracks a little bit. I still like them a lot, but they’re not bulky enough to switch in, nor do they hit hard enough back to compensate. I am hopeful as Rotom has some good matchups with Cynthia that they’ll be able to do something with a few more levels. I am hopeful :P

Nuzlockers always talk about immunities and while I agree they’re helpful, there are only so many situations where you can guarantee they’re going to come into play, esp if you don’t have the moveset in front of you

I have another take about Steel’s defensive profile, but we will talk about that later.

Bronzong
Grade: B
Bronzong has surprised me this whole run by being offensively competent. They earned their place back on the squad by murdering every single bat that came their way, so much that I should renickname them the Joker.

In the Elite 4, they’re struggling to get offense going. They’re perfect for switching in defensively, but some things have fire coverage, and while it can often stay on the field, it can’t consistently do enough on there.

A defensive Pokemon is one thing, but with suboptimal EV training, no leftovers/reocvery move, and being underleveled, it takes too much damage switching in to stay long enough to outpace.

When I faced the calm mind set i got excited before realizing it was postgame locked lol. RN i’m using Gyro Ball and Extrasensory as its offensive moves, Gyro ball isn’t working well (it’s not super fast, but not slow enough to benefit), and extrasensory is better but not enough on its own.

I’m considering having it be a screen setter, I also thought about Stealth Rocks, but that’s not really my issue with Cynthia. I may also try giving it shell bell, or some other utility move. My funniest thought was Sunny Day for Milotic and then Solar Beam lol. If I could give it Calm Mind lol…

Houndoom:
Grade: B+

Houndoom’s odd. It may have a suboptimal nature as its attack and SpA are even, but it does okay.

I ask a lot of it, and it gets the job done for the most part, but it’s a glass cannon and if struggles to take many hits. Which can cause me to struggle with positioning. It hits hard, but its always borderline hard enough and some things are rolls, where if it misses them, it’ll get KO’d in advance.

Leveling it up so it’s mid 50s has helped, and it now has Crunch, but it struggles a bit with Espeon, and Gallade is a problem ofc.

Like Houndoom’s good but not on Azumarills, or Garchomp’s level. I still like My Houndoom a lot, but I’m not sure if it’s gonna be one of my favorites after the run, or if i’ll use it in the post game. Maybe. I do like fire coverage. I may be being unfair. It does a great job on the Spiritomb

Garchomp:
Grade: A+
Despite a modest nature, Chompita is a show stealer, and kills it the entire E4. Yes, it more than makes up for her awkward childhood and puberty. I would be done the fastest if I level her up more, to like 62, where she would probably sweep everything

i won, although I brought Torterra along while I was practicing for shits and giggles, and it almost supplanted Rotom before I accidentally stayed up until morning, and grabbed Choice Specs, which made it usable over an under leveled Torterra :P (which to that point had been stealing kills)

Anyhoo, I was trying to get a lucky egg and ran into a conundrum: I wasn’t seeing the proportion of Pokemon I thought I would with Repel tricking.

Here’s how I thought it worked:

If there was a route with the following Pokemon distribution:

30% Rattata levels 6,7,8
50% Pidgey level 6
10% Beldum level 8
10% Wurmple level 6, 8

I thought if I repelled with a level 8 the new distribution would be like if you simply removed the Pidgey’s from the pool,

So
30/50 * 100% = 60% Rattata
10/50 * 100% = 20% Beldum
10/50 * 100% = 20% Wurmple

However, now I think the percentage remaining after the repel, you’d be doing the math differently

30% * 1/3 + 10% * 1 + 10% * 1/2 = 25% of Pokemon remaining

10/25 * 100% = 40% Rattata
10/25 * 100% = 40% Beldum
5/25 * 100% = 20% Wurmple

This makes more sense anyways with how encounters are calculated, but I wanted confirmation. It’s interesting in times you wanna mine specific Pokemon, or juice the odds to encounter specific Pokemon for a Nuzlocke.

I can explain further, but I think from my math you guys can figure it out.

IK I’ve been spamming the thread, but this will be my last question for awhile:

So I’m going to have brief access to another DS later this week.

I have copies of Diamond, Soul Silver, White, White 2, and Platinum. I’ve beaten them all except for Diamond, which should have a save from previous owner but idk in what condition.

I wanna transfer over as much as possible to the games I like the most: (so mainly White 2, Platinum, and to a lesser extent Soul Silver).

My priorities are as follows:

1. Complete trade evolutions. When possible, trading to a different game so I get boosted xp. Gonna try to get mons with good natures too

2. Give version exclusives. This will be a little annoying as I’ll have to cross reference. I’m not going to try as hard to transfer Pokemon from Gen 4 up to Gen 5, but also not ruling it out.

I’ll also try to breed starters and the like.

Is there anything else I can do? I’ve never had access to two DSes before. I’m so excited. You guys have no idea how exciting it is gonna be to see Gengar on my DS screen.

No no, it is legit exciting to have access to two DSes (or two GBAs or GBCs or whatever else), makes things so much easier.

Other stuff that comes to mind:
  • There's a small amount of version-exclusive items to be aware of, if you care (Gen V has a few weird annoying ones like the Genesect Drives being game-exclusive)
  • Version-exclusive moves (tutor moves mainly, in some cases there's egg moves that are much harder to get without having different versions)
  • Don't forget to obtain all the old events from the Gen IV and V games (this takes some setup but it's not too difficult)
  • if aesthetics is something you care about, the Apricorn balls and the Sport Ball are exclusive to HGSS pre-Gen VII and it can be neat to have certain Pokemon caught in them. Unfortunately they can't be passed down by breeding so they're incompatible with egg moves and it makes obtaining ones with decent natures/IVs harder. Since the Dream World shut down you mostly can't get Pokemon in Dream Balls in Gen V any more unless they're from Dream Radar (but that's also unavailable now, so unless you downloaded it pre-shutdown you're out of luck); you can also obtain Ho-oh, Lugia, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Thundurus, Tornadus, and Landorus as low as level 5 with their Hidden Abilities this way

It may have GBA game compatibility, I literally have no idea, it’s my dad’s GF’s from when she was a kid (I’m 26, not a baby, he’s just kinda a perv)

I’ll look into this TY!! I’m disappointed to learn that items don’t transfer to Gen 5 from Gen 4, but I think there will be some room for stuff.

Tysm!! I would never have remembered to look into it, as I kinda ignored it on Serebii, as it wasn’t relevant for me. It’s cool you can transfer moves, as to my understanding the Switch generations may have really screwed that up.
I appreciate the link!! I tried halfheartedly earlier last month, but I know if I put more effort in I’ll figure it out. I probably need to just use a hotspot instead of wifi with a password.

I caught Ho-Oh and Mewtwo in Friend Balls, the former by accident and the 2nd by thinking “it sure would be funny if this happened twice”

I lowkey really like the acorn balls. They’re so much fun and one of my favorite little generational gimmicks.

Oh just as another tip, my 3DS manages this with the standard house wifi but my original DS "phat" model (as I believe it's called) doesn't - I have to use my phone's hotspot to get it to work. I'd like to use the Gen IV GTS more but it's such an effort because of this.
