Penny Arcade Rape Controversy

Ogle away, but saying they were asking for rape isn't good. Girls are under pressure to dress a certain way. To look nice. So it goes.
Who the fuck said they're asking for rape?

no, but the responses to the initial criticism were absolutely vile, and did hurt. i'm not really sure 'freedom of speech' really covers 'intentionally triggering a group of rape victims' - to put it another way, taunting a section of society that are liable to have post-traumatic stress disorder
Could you highlight which part of this was "intentionally trigger a group of rape victims" or "taunting a section of society that are liable to have post-traumatic stress disorder"?

Something that is discussed with some frequency around here is how the quickly an MMO reverts to its default state, ready for the next bus-full of level appropriate tourists to do whatever that zone desperately requires. Whenever something happens outside this cycle - like WoW's phasing (which gets fairly elaborate by the time Cataclysm rolls around) or a dynamic party matching up against a tough public quest in WAR - it's exhilarating. And then you go collect your hooves.

Gabriel told me about a quest he'd done, thought it might make a good comic, and I'm of the opinion that he was correct. MMOs like the second Guild Wars or Star Wars: The Old Republic are attempting, in their way, to make their worlds more coherent: the former is doing so with scaling world events, the latter by breeding the traditional MMO with single-player DNA. Of course, this assumes that nonsense is even a problem for the genre. World of Warcraft doesn't appear to be hurting any as a result of its pragmatism.

Reaction to Wednesday's comic fell, conveniently for my purpose, into two camps: those who found a phrase like "raped by dickwolves" a stunning return to form, and those who felt that we were somehow advocating the actual rape of human beings. It sounds as though we've already satisfied the first camp, but an effort should certainly be made to assuage the latter.

What surprised me most about some of the reactions to our Dickwolf joke was not that people were offended. But that this was the comic that offended them. In each case the emails I got started with something like “I’ve been a long time fan” or “Been reading the comic for years...” and then they go into how this particular comic really bothered them.

I just don’t understand that. Did the comics about bestiality, suicide, murder, pedophilia, and torture not bother them? Or how about the fruit fucker? I mean, we have a character who is a literal rapist. What comic strip have they been reading all these years?

For the most part I think that people are perfectly happy to laugh at offensive jokes until the joke offends them. Then it’s not funny anymore. There is no way we can know what each and every person who reads the comic has decided to find offensive.

In the end I just disagree with these people about what’s funny and that’s perfectly okay.

how many times do i have to say THE TWITTER MESSAGES AFTERWARDS ARE WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT I DO NOT GIVE A NONCONSENSUAL FUCK ABOUT THE COMIC

except that it isnt funny. but penny arcade never is

even the twitter messages are nothing compared to anything else on the internet. even this thread has worse. just saying, why pick this particular thing?

getting upset that nobody's taking your side, so you go for the tried and true 'shut up' argument?

i remember second grade too
I just thought it was funny that your post stopped right in the middle of it and took the opportunity.

And I mean, the post didn't really say anything of worth anyway (see Vineon's post), so the response was relatively apt regardless.

I called it insane, or, how about this one?, irrational. How's that?

You said it was insane, and since you were using it as slang, you can't really say what it does and doesn't exactly mean. In almost all slang usages of the word "insane" that I have seen, it roughly means uncommon.

Because apparently when people say "that man is insane!," they intend to imply "that man is very uncommon!"

That would be using it literally, which is something you didn't do

can you read what I fucking said please, I said it was out of order, not that PA did it. I believe the phrase I used was 'PA/fans'.

god

Everyone is too caught up in casting blame, and "taking a side," to actually look at this issue from a non-insane standpoint.

Do you lack frequent social interaction or are you just ignorant? Going from rape to choice of clothing is a very common conversation transition, that's not really anything you can deny.

It yet remains a fucking stupid transition.

When a western woman is treated like a whore in some countries for the way she normally dresses, we're quite quicker to condemn this primitive thought that suggests men are lust-controlled animals struggling not to jump her bones.

akuchi gets the best zing yet.

Though In defense of PA, they thought this was dead the moment the apology comic was printed.

Then these crazy lefty bloggers continued going apeshit for weeks after the fact (How DARE you respond to our ABSURD criticism you fools! You should never have done it! Now I shall blog to criticize you AGAIN HA HA HA HA HA!) and making their own merchandise. So PA decided they could cash in too, like smart businesspeople. Then another round of angry blogging ensued.

So basically it exploded out of control and was egged on until both sides exploited it for financial gain or charitable causes. Thus Americans prove to be the most savvy of all. The end.

well the issue apparently changed from the comic to twitter messages that aren't related to the comic so who knows anymore

Let's summarize the topic:
"I'm mad about this comic"
"There's nothing to be mad about"
"I'm also mad about these tweets"
"They weren't made by the people who made the comic"
"I'm still mad"

Where do you live.

No, I don't live where.

Examples of "insane" relating to "uncommon":
"That movie was insane!" - implying that the movie wasn't ordinary
"He has an insane amount of money." - implying that the amount of money he has isn't average
"She is insanely good at that game." - implying that most people don't play that way
(The implications here are based on a common pattern of different slang usages)

It yet remains a fucking stupid transition.

I'm not saying I like it, and obviously you don't like it, but you acknowledge it in modern social situations
