Pokémon Movepool Oddities & Explanations

I know we've discussed this before, but the Gotta Catch Em All event moves...okay, fair, some are random(Rock Throw Pinsir, Future Sight Lapras). Some are minor(Leech Seed Oddish, Sharpen Onix). And some are memes(Sweet Kiss Nidoran, Splash Snorlax). But there's a decent chunk of legit useful moves that make at least decent sense for those mons that were released for that event and NEVER AGAIN. Rapid Spin Geodude. Quick Attack Tauros. I'm not saying every move from that event was a good idea, but it seems like with a lot of them, they did the event and said "Okay, we've released a version of the mon with that move. Let's keep it special and never release it again."

It's a shame because unlike gen 3+ events there's no way to legitimately have those in modern games. Let Alolan Golem get Galvanize Rapid Spin! Also you may think Future Sight Lapras is random, but it's been in its egg move set since Gen 5 :P (I have a whole personal spreadsheet of event moves and whether or not they were later learnable because I'm Incredibly Normal and there's a lot of fun stuff on them!)

Yeah, I really wish there'd been some equivalent of those events for the VC games. Would have probably been a hassle to obtain but it would have been cool all the same.

Sadly I doubt we'll ever get these in the modern games (outside of pure coincidence, like Lapras getting Future Sight probably was). All these seem to be New York Pokemon Center exclusive and I just don't think gamefreak cares abotu english-exclusive events at all.

Contrast with: Rapidash getting Pay Day because SWSH decided to give most other event moves to Pokemon and Japan had a Pay Day Rapidash event 22 years ago

*cries louder in Eruptran*

The thing is that, while it's time-limited, it's a Pokémon Ranger mission. Does that count as an "event" to whoever is in charge of Pokémon learnsets?
Well, the only remotely comparable thing I can think of is Dragonite which had Extreme Speed added to its movepool in gen 8 despite it having been originally only available from a very old gift pokemon that could then pass it as egg move.

After someone brought up Heatran's doubles power with it I really do kind of wonder if this is a doubles worry.

I guess we'll see what happens with Deoxys when it gets added back and see if it gets Meteor Mash or Detect

True, but that was also a gift pokemon within a mainline game

Huh? HGSS isn't that old, it's only...

Wasn't that move like, literally the reason that the Pentagon Rule was added in sixth gen and VGC was limited to current gen sourced mons? I feel like they will only add it once the power creep makes it less busted lmao

That was the theory I saw, yeah.

Though I imagine culling a lot of very specific event moves was probably a big motiviating factor in general, to try & make it more reasonable to get into competitive and not needing to worry about getting a pokemon that was given out for a period of 2 weeks at specific stores or from a specific game

From what I know, the main reason for the pentagon rule (which still exists to this day) was, combined with the fact that every "second release" of a gen includes every legal Legendary in some way, to not make the old games required in order to play competitively.
Gen 8 improved on this by allowing to carry over previous generation Pokemon BUT removing their moveset, which also allows to carry over already trained Pokemon and shinys (expecially legendary ones).
Which honestly is pretty solid as it'd create a huge disadvantage for newcomers, as well as allowing pseudo-balance changes moving on by generation by not distributing certain moves anymore (see lack of Knock Off / Tailwind in current VGC).

You know, speaking of which...

These six Pokemon are the only* Pokemon to unambiguously have wings and yet not learn Dual Wingbeat. Even Clefairy, Celebi, and Dunsparce learn Dual Wingbeat. WTF.

*I scanned through /ds !dual wingbeat to get these guys. It's possible that my eyes passed over others.
Time to update this list with Crown Tundra mons.

Unambiguously has wings:

:ss/anorith:
"It was resurrected from a fossil using the power of science. It swims by undulating the eight wings at its sides. They were feet that adapted to life in the sea."

:ss/armaldo:
"Armaldo usually lives on land. However, when it hunts for prey, it dives beneath the ocean. It swims around using its two large wings."

:ss/garchomp:
"When it folds up its body and extends its wings, it looks like a jet plane. It flies at sonic speed."

:ss/cresselia:
"Shiny particles are released from its wings like a veil. It is said to represent the crescent moon."

:ss/tornadus-therian:
This one makes sense, since base Torn doesn't have wings.

Ambiguously has wings:

:ss/torchic::ss/combusken::ss/blaziken:
The anatomy of this line is weird.

:ss/victini:
Might actually be tails.

:ss/tapu-koko::ss/tapu-lele:
Based on a rooster and a butterfly, and their shells have little protrusions to represent wings.

To be fair I think some of those "wings" are like...the wings of a plane, and not wings like a bird

Which should probably still work for dual wingbeat (well...maybe not Armaldo, those are more like fins...unless its talking about the CLAWS???), but...
Particularly since the mons with the most unambiguously plane-like wings (Latios and Latias) can learn Dual Wingbeat.

I think it's referring to the things with yellow outlines.

yeah thats what im assuming too, since it specified 2 (ruling out the 6...feathers, that are the wings for anorith) and surely calling claws wings wouldn't be happening

Yeah Garchomp at the very least should get it. But I am at least fine with the Anorith line not getting it.
...wait it doesnt get ANY flying type attacks in gen 8. Aerial Ace was its only flying move before and its not a TM/TR now. Huh.

At the very least Garchomp should get Sky Attack IMO, in a "plane crashing" sort of way.

The closest it has to this is Dragon Rush, which is "Dragon Dive" in Japanese, and based on the move description and the way it looks in the anime the move is basically the Pokemon crashing into the opponent with great force, essentially meaning Garchomp using Dragon Rush would be from the sky diving into the opponent with a crash.
