Pokemon and High School?

I'm currently a freshman and I accidently let my Pokemon fandom slip out and now I get comments like "Dude, the bond between Ash and Pikachu is amazing (sarcasm)", "Hey! Hey POKEMASTER", "You wanna throw my Pokeballs!?"

Well as you can tell this REALLY sucks, I'm not ashamed of my addiction but most people in my school eat anyone who isn't a HUGE NFL fan. So what can I do to fix my little problem?

So has this ever happened to any of you?

Oh SOOOOOO many times.

I do have my own gang to share my love of competitive Pokemon, but what sucks the most is when we're supposed to be doing online research and some douche peeks at my screen to find me looking at Smogon :l
Then the whole class finds out, but 10 minutes later, nobody really gives a fuck. Unless everyone in your school thinks Pokemon is gay, I find that letting a Pokecomment slip out is no big deal.

Well I was talking to my friend Nick about learning EVs and IVs, since I'm a newbie in this pro battling world (I'm afraid I'm gonna get eaten) and someone overheard me and quickly spread it around the whole class. Yeah everyone at school puts Pokemon in the same rank as Hello Kitty and sometimes mix the two...

Some guys get all the luck, but I do find solice in my school's VG club. In fact its thruogh that club that I learned about Smogon.com (great site by the way) and the REAL Pokemon world (IVs, EVs, Natures, etc...) we are even planning to host a PBR tourney in our schools Media center, and If I'm lucky I'll try to chronicle the best of the best to post a great warstory here.

My friends give me shit for it sometimes but whatever, they're still friends. I'm the nerdiest one of the bunch. I've got one other friend who still plays pokemon but he's pretty much a huge nerd too. Unlike me he actually gets a lot of vagina, he graduated last year. It's not something I'd want to be revealing to random strangers if I had no friends though.

I'm a senior at this point though, and I know everyone in my class along with a lot of the juniors and a few sophomores. I don't know any of the Freshmen but they're all little (BAN ME PLEASE)s so I don't really care what they think of me. By the end of the year I'll probably get to know a few of them as they're all my friend's brother's friends so he knows them all but I doubt that I'll be hanging out with any of them.

I guess I must be one of the lucky ones. I played all through high school, even openly in class, but no one really minded. Last year in my dorm-house I became known as the DS-kid or Pokemon kid because of how frequently I played, but I was never made fun of. There were even a few people that thought it was neat that I played competitively, like I was paid for it (or was actually any good :P)

I feel comfortable with people knowing I play Pokemon, they really can't do much about it anyway. Just grow a tough shell and they can't really touch you. What are they going to do? Stop you from making friends? Hurl insults all day long? Never let you join in any Raindeer games? People probably make fun of you for it because you're a freshmen. (People still hate me from when I was a freshmen.) Remember, if they're tired of picking on you, then they go away.
I think you have two options though:
1) By nonchalantly saying "So?" when they make fun of you for it, eventually they run out of insults. Then they go away.
2) Hiding out. Considering you're a freshmen, they might just want to beat you up, and you might be better off avoiding that. Getting into fights about Pokemon is not good for you if you value your health.
Your call on which to try, but I didn't really have to deal with this (most of the seniors at the time fondly remembered Pokemon, and owned ADV games.) but good luck. You'll do fine in high school.

Well I've studied Kenpo for 6 years and I'm at a Private school so fights aren't a big problem. The insults themselves don;t really bother me it's just the fact that I'm an honor student and I cant study with them constantly screwing me over so I'm in a state of Paranoia here just trying to keep my mind straight.

I find giving nice verbal abuse to people is great. I know so much info about everyone they wouldn't dare say anything.

Situations different for you though, people in my school love pokemon, if not love they dont really care if their friends play it. :/

Well thankfully I'm antisocial to the masses, so not many people knew. My friends did, and a few played.

Not that I would care if everyone knew, though. I told my Spanish class once that I played, and I explained that only the show is kiddy, not the games. I guess that would be the best option; to show what it is really all about.

Unfortunately, most highschoolers are ignorant douches.

lol, I relate to those very well.

In my school, I'd probably get made fun of if anyone other than my close friends knew I played. It got out once 2 years ago when I had just gone to high school, and man you're right. They refuse to think pokemon is not kiddy despite what you say, sadly.

But, now no one really bugs me about it, and a few people who actually remember just acknowledged it. Just let it go by, I doubt they can do much to you. I go by the saying "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me", lol.

Lol it's so weird that some people have this problem. I'm open about my "poke-diction", but i've never had anyone actually give me a hard time for it. i mean, i'll talk competitive pokemon with my friend while i'm out having a cigarette outside school with the rest of the lunchtime smoker club, and i dunno i just don't catch any shit. :P it's probably because i'm just all-around a nice and charismatic guy, though. i'm sure i could get away with (overtly talking about) murder.

People knew that I played Pokemon in high school, and I even told them I imported the games because they were fun. It didn't cause me problems, except for those wondering why I wanted to play a game in Japanese.

I wore my JAA shirt at school and didn't really get much of anything about it. The kind of people who act like idiots aren't the kind of people that I care about what they think.

I've never really had a problem with Pokemon in my high school (my school was filled with gamers).
I can go one better. My school is filled with Game Programmers.

And yet, even I sometimes get s**t for playing pokemon. It's all in good fun though, and when I do get insulted, I can usually respond with a remark about [insert name here]'s D&D addiction.

Thinking back to when I was in college (High School for the Americans out there), it wasn't really a problem, because I didn't broadcast the fact that I played pokemon. No one else was interested in it, so why should they know that I was?

I'm in an inter city, public school so not many people like games much less Pokemon. I never bring it up in school. Once I did I take my Smogon shirt and they asked what it meant and I told them the skull was from Koffing then they where like cool and then we went on with our business. So yeah, no one knows that I take Pokemon serious and I'm going to keep it that way.

A lot of the people in my school still have a crush on Pokemon, and most liked it at one time, so no one really makes a big deal of it if someone is found out to still like it!

Plus, liking Pokemon is sort of like a "retro" fad nowadays.

Same with what max said, only substitute school for job..I even got a few people who used to loe Pokemon years ago to go get D/P with me when it first came out but they both have since stopped playing.

Well there are some in my school who enjoy Pokemon and other things so it's cool, but there are guys in our class who even say Power Rangers is for lame/for kids WTH?! it's not like I like PR or anything.

So true. I don't tell people I play, though if they ask, I'll tell them.
If you aren't socially retarded and have respecting friends, then I don't see a problem. There are always people that will dislike you, and if you don't play pokemon, they'll find something else to brand you with.

Don't let it get to you. If you can be content doing what you want to do and who you are, then you will be a lot happier in the long run...

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, I'm also a bit of a DND nerd (even though I don;t get to play much) I sort of rip off some of my custom monsters off pokemon, namely Mewtwo (and his manga moves if anyone here on Smogon has actually read it). Yea I shouldn't let it get to me... except for the fact that I'm the freshman who's in charge of selling tickets to our local tourney...

I don't have a need to talk about pokemon, but I'm not ashamed to bring it up either. I talk about pokemon around people I know who I think can take it or shrug it off (ie. people who are hardcore gamers, etc.) Most people give the impression of, "oh, ok that's cool" and don't really care, while others know some of the metagame, but I haven't found a competitive player yet in my school.

To be honest i never really had that problem, most of the time every one in my computer class play c/s pokemon emulators. Plus a lot of people i know started playing pokemon again. And then every one else just doesnt give a shit. Me and a few of my friends played it even during lunch.
