hell yeah

sadly in true Game Freak fashion its base form's stats are the exact average of Latios and Latias's stats (80/85/85/120/120/110) making it slightly worse than both of them
However it gets "As One" for Levitate and Sharpness, the former because it's above anyone questioning it and the latter because They-Slash-Them.

While I do think many Kalos Pokemon should get Megas, I also wouldn't mind to see other gens get new Megas too, like each gen get at least one new Mega. While Kalos mons lacking Mega was an issue, the most prominent issue with Mega was not many mundane Pokemon got Mega while probably too few popular/good Pokemon got it. And that's not covering the other issues Mega Evolution had like, since only one Pokemon can Mega Evolve, and all Mega got a +100 BST no matter their stats, it means Pokemon which were already good that got a Mega were the only ones used (or the ones which got OP Abilities). I like Mega Evolution but I agree it's a mechanic which needs some improvements and hopefully they'll at least try addressing the issues.

Considering 100% is already using 5 cores I don't think we'll see a 200%... BUT I wouldn't write off new forms. I joked about a 75% form, but honestly that's probably the only place they can go. If I were designing it, I would actually make two 75% forms and have them be Zygarde either mimicking or more directly countering Xerneas and Yveltal; and justify it by saying in-lore the 75% forms have 3 cores operating it.

Also I don't see Zygarde getting a Mega but can for Xerneas and Zygarde Yveltal, maybe justifying the reason for two new Zygarde forms.
I could see them going with this as an inverse of ORAS with another "Trio Master CONTROLS trio members" dynamic that also involved new forms to remarket old mons. Where Groudon and Kyogre had "innate" forms (in that they didn't overlap a "one only" mechanic) that Rayquaza matched via a Mega, Zygarde pulls in more power to assume a natural form that deals with Full-Power/Mega Xerneas and Yveltal (just make its ability turn the Auras into Resists to deal with the Fairy part, Terapagos gives precedent for hard-coding a SE/NVE modifier).

Also the Toriyama mention (Rest In Peace you glorious dude) reminds me of my friends and I long joking about Zygarde being Perfect Cell, so maybe take the Complete form further and turn into a "Super Perfect" form on fainting, even if it's an Eternamax style "only to boss battle" form.

I think Xerneas and Yveltal will get SOMETHING, but it might not necessarily be new forms. Ho-oh and Lugia got unique themes in HGSS, and while not mascot legends the Sinnoh starters in PLA borrowed the signature moves from other Hisui originals as well as making them the trio you face with Giratina in Path of Solitude. My point is that there's other avenues to emphasize and celebrate important Pokemon upon revisit besides new forms

I said it before and I'll say it again: we are 100% not getting a new Zygarde form, but we may get Xerneas-Complete and Yveltal-Complete.

A new Zygarde form literally just would not make sense. There is 4, and the best one is called Complete. While Legends Arceus is of course about Arceus (who got no new form, I should add), the creation trio all got Origin to follow with Giratina, which was themed with Arceus in mind.

There's always the option of fusion.

If there's new Zygardes it'd probably be if it's the "companion" Pokemon we use to get around. 10% works for running around but we'd probably want a 25% (or whatever) form for flying around.

Otherwise yeah it probably gets a pass unless things get freaky at the climax

Yeah, we've reached the "talking in circles about hypotheticals" stage now. Known knowns about this game (its name, release year and general setting) are exhausted as conversation topics. Known unknowns (what new Megas, if any?) are fruitless to speculate about since we can't verify which speculations have any merit - we're throwing spaghetti at the wall without being able to see what sticks. Unknown knowns (stuff in the trailer that technically has a meaning, but makes no sense without context) will by definition not make any sense before we know more. And finally, Unknown unknowns can be practically anything. So let's wait for Game Freak to put a little more paint on the canvas before we discuss it again, or what?

A Nintendo Direct has been announced for later today (approximately four hours from now, at the time of writing), and it is at least slightly reasonable that we might get some more news on LZA. Pokémon tends to stick to its own avenues of information, so we don't expect much, but the thread is opened just in case.

If we don't hear any news, or unless the discussion manages to bring up some really interesting and new points on the topic we haven't considered before, the thread will be closed again later.

Hey there; quick question just out of curiosity- what if we see something Pokémon related here that’s not LZA? I do recall there’s been a few times recently where spin-offs have shown up in Nintendo Directs- New Pokémon Snap and Detective Pikachu Returns both come to mind- but since these kinds of games generally don’t get the same kind of traction here on Smogon as the main series, where would users be able to talk about any such announcements? I’m not getting my hopes up for anything major, but as this is a dedicated LZA thread, I wanted to ask just in case anyone else has/had the same question. Thanks!

We'll make a new thread in that case, and try to be so quick about it that nobody needs to post about it in this thread.

Also in case a trailer drops, just to get my guesses locked in: I don't think the entire game will take place in Lumiose City. Rather the opposite. The Plazas will probably be essential to transport you into various wilderness biomes where you and lots of wild Pokémon can roam free. Five plazas, five wilderness biomes, plus Lumiose City as the central hub ... that's exactly the same scope as Legends Arceus.

I wouldn't have any expectations for this Direct. It's likely going to be just a bunch of shovelware and 0 first party.
It'll be a miracle if we get even a teaser regarding Pokemon stuff.
Coming back to see this post after the Direct aired is so hilarious even without Pokémon stuff being present.

Banger Direct. Mario & Luigi is back, new 2D Zelda, MvC2 freed, another potentially good Mario Party, Ace Attorney Investigations with the previously unlocalized sequel being brought over, Donkey Kong Country Returns finally gets a version not on the Wii and 3DS, new NSO stuff implies Conker's Bad Fur Day is possible in the future (along with the revealed games just being good), Dragon Quest 3 remake shows up with surprise appearances from 1 and 2, and of course Metroid Prime 4. And most of it is coming this holiday.

My wallet is fucked lmao.

I am unlocking this in preparation for any announcements that might happen overnight.

Ishihara said on Friday during the Worlds Opening Ceremony there would be news on "Games" during the Closing Ceremony. Whether its LZA or not we have no idea - could just be mobile game updates.

If there is no news I will lock this up in the morning when I sift through all the news myself!

I wouldn’t get my hopes up for anything LZA related. Fans have already pointed out the absence of a Pokémon Presents watch this age like sour milk and I would expect this to be a smaller-end replacement to that, similar to how Partner Showcases have been replacements for larger Nintendo Directs a couple times.

Edit: I’m almost certain this might have something to do with Pokémon Masters, especially after what happened with that game and the last August Pokémon Presents. Not only did Nemona & Scream Tail, and Prof. Oak & Nidorino, come out in the game today but we also have the 5th anniversary update coming up, projected for the end of August like usual.

Usually if we get news during Worlds it's for games we already have gameplay for, and it's something competitive related, like the SWSH video about Room Service and whatnot; SV's video about stuff like the Amulet thing. Not only do we not know if Legends ZA will even have PVP (much leaning it won't, since PLA didn't, but we do not know) but also we don't have any footage about the game.

IMO this is the best case scenario. The longer it is until they release a trailer, the likelier it is a late 2025. The last time we got a polished game was Gen 7, and that was after 2015 had no game, and more dev teams were freed up to help with Sun and Moon.

What's even more frustrating is we could have had another year of dev for two of PLA, BDSP or SV by just not releasing two games in the sams 3 month span, but whatever. This is an opportunity for the "yearly game" cycle to have a breather year to help with quality. If the first game of the batch takes an extra year, everything else has extra time (unless they pull another BDSP).

While Z-A is by no means confirmed to be here, there is 0 reason to expect Masters to be present at this. Worlds announcements tend to focus on, you know, the stuff at worlds. Last year, for example, they showed off Paradox Pokemon in the TCG, Meowscarada/Blaziken/Mimikyu coming to Unite and of course the trailer that showed off new "competitive" moves and pokemon for the DLC.

Masters, even ignoring that it already announced its celebration stuff separately, is just...not even remotely in this wheel-house. It's in its own mobile house with Sleep and Cafe

Things I think would be more likely, though itself not guaranteed:
-New characters for Unite. I believe the test server already tells us what those will be, but shhh. It's a surprise. Act surprised.
-For the TCG, since Pocket was demoed at the show floor they could announce a proper release date or at least when beta might start.
-Alternatively, if they want to keep it to the "proper" TCG we know "Owner's Pokemon" are coming back, which feels like something they could spin as its own mechanic this go around. That puts it in a similar vibe to announcing Tag Teams, ex's, paradoxes, etc.. They could also tease the return of Mega Evolution but we're still several sets from those being relevant, regardless of when Z-A comes out.
-Go wasn't at last years and generally doesn't get "big" announcements. Last year's bigger announcement (Paldean Pokemon) already got rolled into the Presents proper. But we know Dynamax is like really imminent and would be a significant new feature, especially if they tied it to the roll out of Gen 8 Pokemon. Seems a good a time as any to announce it here
-It's honestly kind of hard to gauge how they'll talk about Z-A, especially since it wont be relevant for competitive at all. 2018 I think didn't have anything notable about Let's Go, but I guess there also wasn't really anything to talk about. BDSP & L:A didn't have a Worlds to even begin to be snubbed at. Personally I feel like the first actual footage of the game would probably want a proper presentation...I think if we hear anything about Z-A, it might be more akin to a date of when more information will drop.

Im with ant here, the best-case scenario for Z-A is no news at all. If there is something with any luck it'll be relatively minor like showing the box art. Wildcard prediction if they go that route is them flashing a few pieces of pre-existing Pokemon stock art and going "They are getting Megas btw".

That said, from what I've seen they're already sprinkling in the side media news throughout the proceedings leading up to the closing ceremony? They already dropped the Masters 5th anniversary trailer, and earlier today they showed more Paradise Dragona cards. There's still more they can show like TCG Pocket and Go, but right now I'd put the odds of Z-A news at 10-20%: Not very high but not insignificant.

Also if there is gonna be substantial Z-A news BRING ME EMMA BABY 1% CHANCE 99% FAITH WE ARE GONNA WIN EMMACHADS

I wish Pokemon Unite focused on being a good game rather than just adding new characters (~I've played it for like 400 hours total). Regardless, on top of new characters we can maybe expect them to mention a change to EX characters since they said they'd get rid of the EX-labeling and balancing mid-August.

Referring to multiple posts about Pokémon Masters here: that one’s on me, I genuinely forgot before writing that edit that Masters already had a trailer yesterday anyways. Sorry about that :worrywhirl:

I wouldn't be surprised with a short teaser tbh.

Like something showcasing Megas or something. Not a lot of actual gameplay footage. Tbh, anything that tells me how this game is going to play is good enough in my book.

To be fair, it's not like BDSP was unpolished. It had things that needed to be added in updates, but on release date, that game was in a good state.

It just had very stupid design decisions.

One could argue PLA needed more time in the oven because those textures are borderline unacceptable, but if I think about a game that absolutely NEEDED extra dev time, I think about SV. That game is almost RBY-tier messy. No hate though, I appreciate the ambition.

At any rate, yeah, I think we'll get another short teaser for LZA.

Unite also got a more unexpected showcase yesterday about showing the 500 point gamemode coming to global with a revamped map, which is the main game mode of the Chinese (beta) version of the game that plays completely differently.

I feel like there's been too little else to talk about without acknowledging the elephant in the room, not even a spinoff release this year. Personally I want to see if Marill is in the game because there is a NPC in Lumiose who has one, and just based on PLA I think there will be a lot of focus on the NPCs in the world.

Go has already confirmed its big shake-ups to PvP moves and move acquisition for the next season (and it is a doozy), so if it shows up here, it will be with a major feature outright like Dynamax as people have been speculating, something public and flashy for the audience rather than the competitors, so to speak.

If that’s the case I could see potential ZA news in the vein of “you all watched the big players compete, now here’s the product while we have your eyes”, especially since Legends Arceus, despite lacking a PvP format, brought in more than a few relevant pieces to SV, so it’s still prime speculation material.

Pretty much.

With all the distressing issues that VGC has as an eSport, and especially as a spectator event, they clearly want to have more eyes on it. This is why Hawaiian Shirt Ishiwara came in at the very beginning of the event and said, "Hey, we have announcements at the end of this event."

This makes a strong feedback loop not only in the short-term because they're getting more eyeballs on this event, but also setting the stage for Worlds to be an event that Pokémon fans keep their eyes on because there might be valuable information. This makes it more desirable to watch this slop in the future, hopefully at a time where there's more than one set in three hours of yapping and dancing.

This isn't as flashy as a Pokémon Presents, but it's certainly valid and an industry standard.
