Pokemon Pairing Combinations

Ok, I want to discuss some good OU / BL pokemon that you can put together that resist the other pokemon's weaknesses. These pokemon should somehow aid the other such as easy wish passing, or having a free switch to a sweeper, etc.

So far, all I can think of is:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

-Gyarados (electric, rock)/ electivire (ground)

This one has been known for a long time, so Gyarados' electric weak can boost electivire's speed, and Electivire's ground weak is absorbed by gyarados' flying type. This combo is nice because you can get a nice switch in for your sweeper.

If you pair Gyarados with a ground type, then the ground pokemon takes the electric and rock attacks aimed at Gyarados. Gyarados takes the water attacks well.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

-Jirachi, Metagross (Fire, Ground) / Salamence or Dragonite (Ice, Dragon, rock).

Jirachi/metagross' fire and ground weaknesses can be taken nicely by Salamence and Dragonite while the dragon's ice, rock, and dragon weak are taken by the steel type. You can get your sweeper in the game or pass a wish.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

-Celebi (Fire, ice, dark, ghost, flying, poison, bug) / Heatran (ground, water, fighting)

Celebi can take Heatran's water and fighting weaknesses easily. It's usually bulky enough to take ground attacks too. Celebi's fire weakness boosts heatran's fire moves with flash fire. Heatran's steel typing can take the ice, dark, flying, poison, bug and ghost attacks aimed at celebi. Just watch out for pursuit.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's all I can think of for now. Please post some good combinations.

When posting, please put an explanation to why you'd pair the pokemon whether its trapping a pokemon, forcing a switch, having a solid defensive base, or simply getting your sweeper in the action.

Some corrections...

Gyarados is weak to Rock.
Salamence / Dragonite is weak to Rock also.
Celebi is weak to Flying.

I've been using the following as a wall/tank combo:

Gyarados-Registeel

Using the bulky Gyarados spread, you can resist every type but electric, which is neutral on Registeel anyway.

Its worked for me, a great pair of walls for sure.

Claydol + Walrein is pretty decent in UU...provided you have a grass resist on the team (which you should, since 7 types resist it)

Gyarados + Magnezone = resist for every attacking type?

Gyara+Steelix are neutral to ice, but Steelix does have beastly def...+Intimidate is nice

GrowTran anyone?

Really, baiting an attack out of something and switching to an appropriate counter is the basis of any pairings. I mean, throw out just about any Water type and pair it with E-Vire or something to absorb the (probably) inevitable Electric attack, or maybe into Dugtrio for the trap and possible kill.

So does Magnezone + Dragon/Flying. Unfortunately, resisting types alone tends to not do the trick, because Pokemon generally don't use one type of move, but up to four of them.

Steel + almost anything tends to work, simply because Steels resist pretty much everything to begin with.

If you're going to post stuff you should emphasize what's so good about it. I don't really see much discussion going on at all. a_a

how about skarmpert? Skarm resists grass 4x(swamperts only weakness) while pert is immune to elec and fire is nve. Also thanx to swamperts resistance to SR and skarms neutrality switching isnt limited as much.(note swampert's lack of a recovery move can hurt somewhat)

Skarmbliss also works well *runs b4 the flame*

Empoleon and Gliscor makes a decent defensive combo. Empoleon's Ground and Electric weaks are completely negated by Gliscor as well as a Figthing resist. Empoleon resists Water and 4x resists Ice.

Jirachi and Moltres cover each other.

Tyranitar @ Choice Band
Nature: Adamant
Ability: Sand Stream
Ev's: 252Atk, 252Hp, 4Sp.Def
~ Crunch
~ Stone Edge
~ Earthquake
~ Pursuit

Salamence @ Choice Specs
Nature: Modest
Ability: Intimidate
EV's: 252Sp.Atk, 220Spe, 36Hp
~ Draco Meteor
~ Fire Blast
~ Hidden Power Ground
~ Dragon Pulse

Type-wise, the synergy between the two Pokes is pretty awesome. Five of Tyranitar's weaknesses, Water/Grass/Fight/Ground/Bug, are all resisted by Salamence, whilst the sixth (Steel) is neutral. Meanwhile, Salamence's key weakness, Ice, is taken relatively well by Tyranitar thanks to the Sp.Def Sandstorm boost, and the relatively few phyiscal Ice users. Tyranitar is Rock and Dragon neutral too.

However, the synergy between them goes a lot further than that. With good prediction, each can totally fuck up most of the counters of the other, whilst still maintaining a solid offensive presence.

Salamence can come in relatively safely on predicted Earthquakes from Hippowdon, Rhyperior, Swampert and Gliscor, and proceed to OHKO all four with Draco Meteor. Ice Shard makes Donphan more difficult, however. Specs Fire Blast will also OHKO Bronzong. As for the other broad category of Tyranitar counters, Fighters, Mence can come in on most of them too. Intimidate and a Fighting resistance allows him to come in on predicted Focus Punches, Close Combats and the like from potential Tyranitar counters such as Machamp, Hariyama, Breloom and Lucario, and is capable of OHKOing all four of them with their standard EV sets. Again, Ice Punch/Stone Edge is common on all of them, so prediction is key. However, none of them outspeed you (Except maybe Jolly/Timid Lucario, but that's uncommon due to priority)

The vast majority of SpecsMence's counters get beaten by Tyranitar too. Blissey and Cresselia hate a CB Pursuit. Empoleon is uncommon, and is problematic due to resisting both STABs and a STAB Surf to scare Tyranitar off, but CB Earthquake is an OHKO unless it runs obscenely massive amounts of Defensive EV's. However, Specs Hp Ground from Mence is a likely 2HKO on Empoleon unless is runs 252/252 Calm, so it's not unkillable. However, Milotic can be a problem.

Notable Problem Pokes for this combination:

Bear in mind that this is solely defensive threats. You've got the rest of your team to cover offensive threats.

~ Milotic. Recover, Ice Beam, Marvel Scale, massive Sp.Def and STAB Surf hurt this combo. Make sure to keep something in reserve that can smack it around.

~ Donphan. Whilst obviously a lack of recovery hurts him, the fact that he can come in on T-Tar with ease, and can beat Mence with Ice Shard if they end up one on one means that this combo can have problems with him.

~ Empoleon. Especially ReSTalkers, because they don't die so quickly.

~ Probably more. Haven't thought about it much.

Zapdos+Lucario
I have been using these two to great success on shoddy.
Zapdos's 2x ice and 2x rock weaknesses and Lucario has a 2x and 4x resist respectively. Also, Zapdos can use BP Speed and Subs to Lucario whenever a counter comes it.

I am fond of:

Zapdos
Timid 252 Spd, 252 Hp, 4 SAtk or Calm 252 HP, 252 Sdef (if you want to take flamethrowers and the like)
@Leichi Berry
Agility
Sub
Thunder Bolt
BP

Lucario
Adamant 252 Spd, 252 Atk, 4 Spd
@Lum Berry
CC
Crunch
Extreme Speed
Swords Dance

I had some success on a team using dd ttar and specs gar. they cover each other's weaknesses very well and they both hit hard. dd ttar's counters, bulky grounds, don't like to be hit by a specs 359 sp. attack hp ice or shadow ball. ttar doesn't enjoy paralysis aimed at gengar, but he can hurt tons of stuff on their weaker physical side that gar can't hit.

Scizor - Heatran.
Scizor switches in on stuff like TTar, gets an Agility in while the Ape comes out to play given the fact that Scizor attracts Fire like Poop does Flies. BP to Heatran and have fun.

ok, no offense to anyone but this is the millionth thread of this sort. someone just sticky one of them and we can just work from there.

Quagsire and Moltres work very well together.

Moltres lures water attacks which heal Quasire, and boasts an immunity to Thunderbolt, and a resistance to Rock.

Moltres is 4x resistant to Grass, while also immune to EQ.
-------------------

Zapdos + Empoleon

Zapdos is immune to EQ, resistant to fighting, but neutral to Electric (unless you factor in Roost).

Empoleon resists Rock, and Ice.

-----------------------------------------------------
Moltres + Empoleon

Immunitiy to Eq, resists Fighting, but weak to Electric.

Empoleon resists Rock, and Water.

Also, Empoleon is a nice Special Tank, while Moltres can take Physical hits (especially with W-o-w).

-----------------------------------------------------
Heatran + Bronzong

Bronzong lures Fire, which Heatran absorbs, while Bronzong absorbs Earthquake.

Brongzong's good Defenses allow it to survive Water/Fighting attacks.

-----------------------------------------------
Mantine/Gyarados/Salamence + Heatran

Mantine covers Heatran perfectly, being immune to 2 of its weaknesses, and resistant to fighting.

Gyarados/Salamence have Intimidate to make up for its lack of Water Absorb, while still being resistant to Water.

Salamence also has Wish.
-------------------------------------------------

Jumpluff + Heatran

Jumpluff has resistance to Fighting, and Water, and Immunity to Ground.

Jumpluff can switch in, and use Sleep Powder, Encore, or Leech Seed to cause switches, making it an effective counter when used properly.

Heatran covers Ice, Flying, and Fire very effectively, as well as Poison.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Vaporeon + Gliscor

Vaporeon has Wish and Water Absorb, with an Ice resistance, while Gliscor has Electric and EQ immunity.

They make a great combo because both have a healing move, and can wall on opposite spectrums.

Additionally, both can pass boosts to eachother (Vaporeon has Wish and Acid Amor, while Gliscor can pass Rock Polish)
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Heatran + Giratina

Heatran is resistant to Dragon/Ghost/Dark/Ice, while Giratina resists Water, and is immune to Fighting, and doesn't mind taking Eq with its high Defense.

Both have access to W-o-w, which is great if you want to chose 1 or the other.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Empoleon + Celebi

Empoleon takes Dark, Ghost, Ice, Flying, Poison, and Bug for Celebi, while Celebi takes EQ, Fighting, and Thunderbolt for Empoleon.

Plus Celebi can pass it Calm Minds which can make Empoleon really good!

--------------------------------------------
Lanturn + Bronzong/Skamary

Lanturn works to take Fire/Thunder attacks, while Bronzong/Skarmary take Eq/Grass attacks.

Lanturn can also Thunderwave, which helps to cause switches, making it a nice fit for Skarmary to have on its team.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Steelix/Swampert + Flying type

Both resist Rock, are not weak to Ice, and are immune to Electric.

Quagsire can also be used (Quagsire for Water Immunity- Pairing with Aerodactyl, Moltres, Gliscor). Plus Quagsire gets Encore. *Only 1 Weakness*

Gastrodon can also be used because it has Recover + Stockpile. *Only 1 Weakness*

Swampert is generally preferred above the previous two for having better defenses and offenses. *Only 1 Weakness*

Steelix has a 4x resistance rather than a 2x resistance to Rock and much better Defense + Explosion. *Steelix does have Fire, Water, Fighting, EQ weaknesses; the latter 2 which are resisted by Flying types.*

Steelix can be great coverage for Salamence, Gyarados, and Dragonite, and is the only pokemon to resist Rock, Electric, and Dragon other than Magnezone.

Salamence/Gyarados/Dragonite resist all of Steelix's weaknesses, which is why they work so well together.

*******************************************************

Lanturn/Magnezone + Flying type

Both resist Bolt+Beam, and Magnezone also resists Rock and packs Explosion, not to mention Electrolevitate.

Lanturn, however, packs Surf which kills off Rock move users, (generally Ground/Rock types which are weak to water *Rhyperior*), and STAB Thunderbolt for Bulky Waters packing Ice Beam (Milotic), while having an Immunity to Electric attacks.

Lanturn works especially well with Aerodactyl, Gliscor, Skarmary, etc. because it resists all of their weaknesses *except Rock*.

Magnezone is similar, but doesn't resist Fire which is what Skarmory is weak to.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gengar and Drapion is another good one no one has mentioned.

Gengar is immune to ground and can use it's speed to sweep or status the opponent.

Drapion uses STAB moves to punish Ghost or Psychic and resists dark with it's awesome defenses and speed.

Also...

Toxicroak and Honchkrow

Toxicroak can take on Ice types as well as waters that carry Ice moves, resists rock type attaks.

Honchkrow is immune to Psychic and Ground attacks, hit's psychic with STAB and can status the switch in.
