Pokemon Platinum - The definitive thread: Mach 3 (Competitive Discussion)

Please tell me that the guy mistranslated Gunk Shot as Mud Slap. How's a Weezing going to slap mud? It's a pair of heads and nothing else! And if it doesn't learn Gunk Shot, well, that just doesn't make sense.

The Japanesse for both doesnt look similar, but if you have concerns, you can PM him

I wonder...will Signal Beam or Dive do anything for Cloyster? They're the only two moves he gets that could possibly do anything better to his moveset. Might I propose (for Ubers, actually):

Cloyster @ Leftovers
Brave
Skill Link
252 HP/64 ATK/128 SpATK/66 SpDEF
-Icicle Spear
-Toxic Spikes
-Signal Beam
-Explosion

I'm not the best at making movesets, although I propose a Cloyster with Icicle Spear/Skill Link (ultimate Garchomp counter) and Signal Beam for the many, many Psychics in the ubers. Any thoughts?

Deck Knight, I think this set looks better (I use Nidoking avidly)
Adamant Nidoking @ Life Orb
6/252 Att/ 252 Spe
~Earthquake
~Suckerpunch
~Thunderpunch
~Megahorn

Hmm, is there any chance new egg moves have been brought with Platinum? If so, would anyone with a Platinum game be so kind as to check if Flygon can learn Dragon Dance? Perhaps we will be lucky and, like Crystal, we will get some oh-so-needed Egg Moves.

shhh, I mentioned this before but got yelled at by Anti =3

BTW, I tried breeding a nastly plot/calm mind spiritomb with the Gengar line and sadly, Gengar still doesn't get any of those in platinum :(

I'm gonna try tail glow smearge and ampharos next.

Wow, I'm sure I speak for the whole of Smogon when I say that I am completely devestated! :)

*sniggers*

New egg moves seem unlikely at this point...if they did exist we would know about them by now.

You would really need to hack into the game data to find out. So far what we have been doing, for the tutor moves, is by trial and error.

Well, a lot of the earlier data was acquired because the data was extracted from the Battle Frontier Pokes. And from all those hundreds of Pokemon, there was nothing to suggest any new egg moves. Whilst that doesn't neccesarily prove anything, combined with the lack of any evidence to the contrary it's enough to convince me that there are no new egg moves.

So just wondering what people think about Gengar and Hypnosis because of the accuracy drop. Do you think that it won't be seen on Gar as much or will still be widely used? Maybe something else will replace it as the standard 4th move? WoW? Trick? HP Ice? Just curious how people felt about that.

Was Hypnosis used on Advance Gengars? Since it's back to its previous accuracy, I imagine it'd see its old amount of use, or that it'd at least have some effect on it.

Wormadam doesn't go by any of these

I would have to say non-competitive attributes, like Pokedex Number and Name, clarify what a species is

On the other hand, considering that we are emulating local battling rather than strict Battle Tower battling (or Celebi and Jirachi would cease to partake of this metagame), we need not hold to the battle tower's definition of species.
After all, we allowed one form of Deoxys while banning the others, so that could serve be a precedent for the differentiation of different forms so that each counts as a different 'species' for online battling.
Things like Pokedex Number and Name have more to do with the flavor of a pokemon, and so should have little to no effect on its status in a fully competitive metagame.

Trick Scarf could be abused, or even...

Gengar@Black Sludge
Timid/Modest
4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Levitate

Trick
Shadow Ball
Thunderbolt
Focus Blast/Hidden Power Ice

Trick Black Sludge onto something like Blissey when it switches in, then get Leftovers in favour of pretty much countering Blissey. Therefore HP Ice would be an idea to help control the move popular DD+Outrage Mence.

As it's possible to trade said gengar back into Pearl to get 70% acc I don't see why you would bother using Platinum to battle on, people would just use it to get the moves then send the Pokes back to D/P for 70% accuracy. Chances are shoddy will reflect this (aka Hypnosis acc will stay 70).

Hallelujah on the Shoddy accuracy. I quit Wifi battling awhile back, so at least Shoddy will keep the better accuracy.

I wanna know why they would increase then decrease in the same generation. Did they think 70% was too much?

If Shoddy were to emulate D/P Hypnosis, it would have to ban Skymin and Oratina from being used, since they cannot be used in a D/P vs. D/P battle. Since a lot of people are going to want to use those two, it'll be 60%.

Well, D/P doesn't have the Battle Recorder nor the sprites/back animations. Also, I'm still not sure how would Platinum V D/P react with Hypnosis.

I'm willing to test that later tonight with someone. You supply the Platinum Game, I'll supply Diamond and record the results. If someone is willing to do a lengthy (at least 100 trials for each game) test, PM me or AIM me.

I imagine it would work similar to how Present worked between Crystal and Gold/Silver: the "fixed" version overrules the "broken" version. In this case, Hypnosis would have the new accuracy.

That'd be great! I would test it with you but I don't have a "real" Platinum, hope you find a guy/gal willing to do it with you.

@WER: Maybe..but we still need to make sure.

By the way, does Double Team function differently in Platinum? In a Double Team Starapter v. Roost Scizor war against my rival, I missed a total of 33 bullet punches before finally landing one.

33 misses from a 100% accurate move following just 2 double teams (it set up one during the first turn when I missed Crobat's hypnosis, and another one as I switched to Scizor) seems a bit, odd.
